Lessons I'm Learning
As I am writing this I am currently transitioning from pastoring a church in Valdosta, Georgia to pastoring a church in Boise, Idaho. I have been studying John 14 with my church here in Valdosta and reflecting on Jesus’ words of comfort and encouragement that He shared with His disciples. Even though I am sure that God is leading in this move, it has not been easy. I am tired and have often felt overwhelmed. But I keep turning to the words of Jesus recorded in John 14. I have also been reflecting on the big lessons I have learned in ministry and life so far.
Quick Review of John 14:19-31
Jesus’ life is connected to our hope of eternal life. Because Jesus lives we can secure in the assurance that we also will live.
Having and keeping the commandments and the word of Jesus is deeply connected to loving Jesus and witnessing His revelation.
The Father will send the Helper, the Holy Spirit to teach and remind Jesus’ followers what He taught them.
Jesus gives us His peace and we should not let our hearts be troubled or afraid.
Jesus tells us what is going to happen before it does so that when it does happen we may believe in Him.
Because Jesus loves the Father He obeys the commandments of the Father.
Takeaway
What I take away from John 14:19-31 is that Jesus never abandons His followers. When Jesus left He left us His word and his commandments (I believe these two are essentially the same) and the Father sent the Holy Spirit to teach and remind Jesus’ disciples of the things Jesus said. I believe the same promise holds true to us today.
I am convinced that the Holy Spirit is available to us today to teach us all things and to bring to our remembrance all thing things that Jesus said.
But the Helper, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in My name, He will teach you all things, and bring to your remembrance all things that I said to you. - John 14:26 NKJV
To me, it is clear that the secret to our spiritual success lies in receiving the Holy Spirit. Only then can we better understand Jesus and remember His words and keep his commandments. All the things we must do we can only do with the power of the Holy Spirit.
Studying this brought to mind what seem to be two essential lessons I am learning.
Lesson 1: Pray, especially for the Holy Spirit.
Never stop praying. - 1 Thessalonians 5:17 New Living Translation
One lesson that I began to learn early in life is that prayer is important. This is the one lesson I keep re-learning in life, and I believe it is one of the most important things I do. If I am not careful, become discouraged because of my feelings of weakness and powerlessness. I often wish I had more money, I wish I had more knowledge, I wish I had more power, more strength, or whatever it is I need to be able to solve the problems of those around me. Then I remember that it is not my job to solve everyone’s problem. I can’t even solve my own problems.
I do not mean this as an excuse not to help those we are able to help. I say this to prevent you from burning out trying to accomplish something that’s not for you to accomplish. Jesus is the One who saves. God has all the power, not us. We are not Jr. Holy Spirit. We should pray, we should pray for people, we should pray with people, we should point them to Jesus. Jesus is the answer. We are His hand and feet (1 Corinthians 12 we are the body of Christ) and we should be a blessing in the lives of those around us, but we are also humans and have our limitations. Our limitations should not keep us from doing anything. We can all at least pray, and through prayer, we can do more than we could ever possibly hope to accomplish by our own strength.
Pray especially for the Holy Spirit
If you then, being evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your heavenly Father give the Holy Spirit to those who ask Him!” -Luke 11:13 NKJV
Jesus essentially tells us to ask for the Holy Spirit. Jesus tells us that the Father is willing to give the Holy Spirit to those who ask, so ask! Ask every day! Ask multiple times a day. I take this promise to heart and I pray this prayer often. I pray it because I feel a desperate need for more strength, for more wisdom and understanding, for more power to preach and teach and help and do all that I can to point others to Jesus and to reveal the character of Jesus in my own life.
I strongly believe that all the success I experienced with the Park Avenue Seventh-day Adventist Church in Valdosta, Georgia, is because of our prayer meetings and the prayers we have around the table with all the members of the church board every time we have a board meeting. I believe in prayer and we have a church board that believes in prayer.
I have enjoyed God’s blessings because I have a church and friends and family who continually pray for me and pray for God to fill me with the Holy Spirit. I don’t deserve it, but God does not bless us according to what we deserve, but rather according to His grace and His mercies and His power and His will.
It is not because of any restriction on the part of God that the riches of His grace do not flow earthward to men. If the fulfillment of the promise is not seen as it might be, it is because the promise is not appreciated as it should be. If all were willing, all would be filled with the Spirit. - Acts of the Apostles p50
Pray for wisdom
If any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask of God, who gives to all liberally and without reproach, and it will be given to him. - James 1:5 NKJV
Another promise that I claim regularly is this one. God tells us to pray for wisdom. We are told we will receive liberally, without reproach. Why not ask? I ask all the time.
Lesson 2: Persevere
The Bible has a lot to say about perseverance.
And let us not grow weary while doing good, for in due season we shall reap if we do not lose heart. -Galatians 6:9 NKJV
Show Up!
One of the ways that I understand perseverance is simply showing up. So many seem to believe that change happens in a big flashy event. It has been my experience that the biggest changes happen gradually over time.
Spiritual growth, like many other things in life, does not take place overnight. Sure, the high events are a great blessing. Many times we experience it when we first give our hearts to Jesus or the day we are baptized. Other times it happens at the conclusion of revival meetings or a week or prayer or an evangelistic series. But life is not made up of high moments. Going to a concert of your favorite Christian musician is a great experience but it does not generate lasting change and growth by itself.
Lasting change, continual growth, comes from showing up daily. Show up for prayer. By this I mean when your eyes pop open in the morning, the first thing you should do is pray. Thank God for another day of life. Ask God to fill you with the Holy Spirit. Ask God for wisdom. Talk to God about your day, what are you excited about? What are you worried about? Tell God all about your day.
Show up for Bible study. You should be studying the Bible every day. You may call this your daily devotional. This is when you allow the word of God to challenge you, to fill your thoughts, to shape your decisions. Reading the Bible reminds you that you have bigger goals than worldly wealth and power. You have greater values than just physical pleasure. You remind yourself that you serve a mighty and powerful God, you remind yourself that eternal life is yours in Jesus. From there you go to live a life that reflects the character of the God you serve.
You show up for worship, to be spiritually fed, to be challenged, to serve, to teach, to bless. We come to church for all those reasons. In serving, in teaching, in helping, we grow. Also when we make God and worship a priority, we remind ourselves that this is important. We tell ourselves that we value God and His will for our lives when we stop everything and come together to worship and study. Christianity is meant to be experienced as a community. It is important to belong, to be involved, to contribute, to volunteer. Because that is how we grow.
Show up, be responsible, be reliable, have clear priorities, and make God your top priority. Now live like it. Determine in your heart to show up for God. Do it at church, but also at home, at school, and even in your downtime.
Show up for God regularly and you will grow spiritually.
Don not wait for a big opportunity to do something amazing, rather do your best each day with every small opportunity that presents itself to you.
The key is to yield ourselves daily to God, so that He may make us vessels fit for His use. Every day we should be improving the opportunities for service that lie within our reach. Daily we ought to be witnessing for the Master wherever we may be, whether in some humble sphere of influence in the home or in a public field of usefulness.
Don’t give up
in the hope rejoicing; in the tribulation enduring; in the prayer persevering; - Romans 12:12 Literal Standard Version
I really appreciate the Literal Standard Verison of Romans 12:12. It is a simple reminder of how we ought to live our lives. We rejoice in our hope, we endure tribulations, and we pray continually.
Seek the LORD and His strength; Seek His face continually. - 1 Chronicles 16:11 NASB
Don’t stop seeking God and His strength. We are not able to do it on our own. We are not meant to do it on our own. We are to seek God and His strength. He is the One who gives us the victories.
Finally, my favorite Bible passage that I often turn to and the one that keeps me from giving up.
31 What then shall we say to these things? If God is for us, who can be against us? 32 He who did not spare His own Son, but delivered Him up for us all, how shall He not with Him also freely give us all things? 33 Who shall bring a charge against God’s elect? It is God who justifies. 34 Who is he who condemns? It is Christ who died, and furthermore is also risen, who is even at the right hand of God, who also makes intercession for us. 35 Who shall separate us from the love of Christ? Shall tribulation, or distress, or persecution, or famine, or nakedness, or peril, or sword? 36 As it is written:
“For Your sake we are killed all day long; We are accounted as sheep for the slaughter.”
37 Yet in all these things we are more than conquerors through Him who loved us. 38 For I am persuaded that neither death nor life, nor angels nor principalities nor powers, nor things present nor things to come, 39 nor height nor depth, nor any other created thing, shall be able to separate us from the love of God which is in Christ Jesus our Lord. - Romans 8:31-38 NKJV
This passage keeps me from giving up because it reminds me that nothing can separate me from the love of God. The way I see it, the only way I lose is if I give up. I know for sure that God won’t give up on me. So I just have to live one day at a time, take one step at a time, just keep showing up, because I know I can count on God to show up.

5 Beauty Products You Need To Try Based On Your Zodiac Sign Pt. 1
Okay, okay before you click off because you think horoscopes are not real (which they totally are), promise me you’ve never checked the horoscopes page in a magazine or blog out of sheer curiosity. Yeah, I thought so too.
Personally, I’m kind of what you call a “Horoscope Snob”. I’m not an Astrologer but I do believe in Zodiac Signs. I’m not here to impose my beliefs just check your sign based on your birthday and consider the products I recommend below based on the alignment of the stars!
Tumblr media
If you’re born between March 21- 20 April, you’re an Aries...
(I’m an Aries stellium) If so, you are blessed with energy, optimism and independence. Hands down, Ella Woods (portrayed by Reese Witherspoon) is the queen of all Aries Women. Other Aries women include Sarah Jessica Parker, Maraiah Carey (skinny), and Lady Gaga.
You guys are extremely enterprising and maybe a little vain, but wouldn’t you be too if you got accepted to Harvard Law School?
Tumblr media
These products will keep you energized and reflect your true colors
1. Balls in the Air - Goop
To maintain energy in the long run, subscribe to keep your lively attitude and fitness levels in check! Make sure to use your energy towards things or people who improve your life and bring you joy even if it seems more fascinating to start fights for banter.
2. First Aid Beauty Body Scrub
The most athletic people I know are Aries Women. Their energy is so divine and super fiery. If you don’t exercise regularly I highly encourage you to do so, Aries, because it’s going to keep you from combusting. Instead of starting fights, get that endorphin rush from exercising!
Tumblr media
That being said, I highly recommend you keep your skin looking great in between those workout sessions. This product contains 10% AHA which means it’s great for exfoliating and shedding off dead skin.
3. Yves Saint Laurent Water Stain Lip Stain
The color that symbolises an Aries is red. This newly launched product is easy to use and you can throw it in your purse for a light touch up whenever you want. I think all red undertones suit Aries women, but I recommend mostly the “Vague de Rouge” color 602 - a popping strawberry red one.
4. Hair Oil - Ouai
Aries Women are not afraid to take risks, they are tomboys at heart and don't shy away from doing crazy experiments with their hair. Every Aries woman is different when it comes to this but we can all agree that their hair needs to be tamed by this hair oil! A lot of times you just need to wear your hair untamed and completely wild.
Tumblr media
5. Dr. Barbara Strum: Anti-aging Primer
Your impulsive nature is charming - but it may be what's destroying you. To keep yourself from running thin, use this product as a part of both your skin care and makeup routine. Doubling up as a primer and day cream, investing in this will not only keep your skin looking as young as your spirit but also gets rid of any uneven texture or dullness!
 If you’re born between 21 April - 21 May, you’re a Taurus…
(My Moon Sign and Midheaven) You guys are your own best friends, like seriously, I get you. You’re ambitious, stubborn and you take your pleasure seriously. You’re a boujee bitch, treating yourself is a lifestyle, not a hobby. But you deserve it, you work hard and play hard. Ruled by Venus, you tend to be either attractive or extremely charming, Taurus women also include Gigi Hadid, Megan Fox and Audrey Hepburn.
1. Gimme Brow Kit
If Taurus women have one thing in common, and we all know what it is - eyebrows. Brows are so important to them, I mean they either make you or break you right Taurus? I recommend any Benefit Cosmetic Brow product when it comes to this field. These women knew about this secret before “ fleek” was even a thing - and their secret is finally out!
Tumblr media
2. Dior Backstage Glow Face Palette
I’ve personally purchased this twice. I feel like every Taurus woman would love this product! Dior is such a signature brand that hits every Taurus’ sweet spot when it comes through with their products. The bronze, color and glow you get in one palette is insanely luminous!
3. Slip Silk Pillow Case
Most Taurus people I know can take a nap anywhere however if it was their way they would be sleeping in gold-made cloth, let’s be real. Is Silk a close second, Taurus? Hear me out, Slip Silk Pillow case brings so many benefits for your skin and hair, so no more bedhead and irritated skin for you! I just believe there is no sign that deserves this more than you - no shade but invest in your bed, Taurus! You’re always in it.
4. Sunday Riley Auto Correct Brightening and DE puffing Eye Contour Cream
Kind on the pricey side, but is that really a problem for you? Use this product to depuff your under eyes after all that sodium you consumed last night. Instead of feeling bad, you’ll be waking up as beautiful as ever - NO REGRETS.
Tumblr media
And what you truly need is....
5. Amika Polished Perfect Straightening Brush 2.0
I don’t get why you guys get a bad rep for being lazy - you’re just selectively active! This hair tool would help make your hair look amazing and sleek in just 7 minutes. All you have to do is brush your hair and watch it de-frizz. This was made for you, you’re welcome.
Tumblr media
If you were born between May 22 - June 21 you’re a Gemini…
Honestly you guys scare, but in a good way. Every Gemini I know has the facial expression of someone that’s about to bite you, but again in a good way. Seriously jokes aside, you guys are a blast to be around. You are adaptable, outgoing and extremely intelligent. Although you guys have a male spirit, you also have a flirtatious provocative side – I mean Naomi Campbell and Marilyn Monroe are the queens of Geminis! They love being different and challenging - keep reading!
Tumblr media
1. Flaunt it Butt Sheet
You guys have a hard time sticking to anything unless it’s super interesting or eye grabbing. I gotchu, here’s a sheet mask, not for your face, but for your butt. I know you’re intrigued, go ahead and purchase it.
2. Kiehl’s Cannabis Sativa Seed Oil Herbal Concentrate
So you’re ranting to everyone about how the world is ending soon due to pollution and our lack of care towards mother earth while chugging down water from a plastic bottle. I mean it’s outrageous to you! Here is a gift from Mother Nature, go ahead and use this CBD oil to calm down your worries and pimples.
Tumblr media
3. Winky Lux Confetti Lip Balm
This lip balm is the perfect one for you, Gemini! No seriously, it swipe this clear balm on your lips to get the perfect shade of pink depending on your PH, it’s just for you. It’s your shade.
Tumblr media
4. Dr Jart Shake & Shot Rubber Masks
Okay so maybe you’re over the whole over-socializing lifestyle, maybe for two days you want to convince yourself that you want to be tamed, so here’s a cool milkshake face mask to get you going. (don’t let it explode)
5. Eyeliner Brown Marc Jacobs
Hands down the best eyeliner. If you’re tired of your look, go ahead and do a small brown eyeliner for a small change. And if we’re being honest, whenever you’re really tired of your look dare to create fake freckles all over your face with this product and pretend that they’ve always been there.
Tumblr media
 If you’re born between June 22 - July 22 you’re a Cancer…
Sigh, the mother of the zodiac signs. My sister is a Cancer and the rumors are true – I have two moms. You rock the girl-next-door look but you tend to be more reserved or cold at first. When you guys are not hiding in your shell, you’re emotional, sensitive and caring. And if anyone were to glance at your loved ones the wrong way, let’s just say your mama bear claws come out to play.
Tumblr media
And sometimes you might feel like you’re so alone on this earth because you’re overwhelmed by your emotions, but it’s okay Margot Robbie and Ariana Grande can relate! Finding products for you may be hard due to your already built in routine but here are some suggestions:
1. Kat Von D Tattoo Liner
Okay so secret’s out: you guys cry a lot. Go ahead and deny it profusely as you purchase this eyeliner – it seriously does not want to come off, even if you want it to.
2. Diptyque Baies Candle
Cancers LOVE home décor. You guys stay at home often which is why you want your space to always be the best it can be. This candle may be pricey but it’s definitely an investment, it can change the smell of your room that kinda stinks due to the lack of circulation in there.
Tumblr media
3. Biologique Rechere p50
Now, I know you guys have a hard time switching products especially skincare because you think you found what already works and I totally respect that, but if your routine does not include this then please reconsider. It’s so good that it kinda has its own cult and it’s kinda weird.
4. SUPERGOOP Unseen Sunscreen Broad Spectrum SPF 40
Hold on to your hats Cancers, here is another thing you have to worry about: protecting your skin due to the blue light that’s emitted from our phones and computers. No worries though, use this product that helps protect your skin from these lights! After applying the velvety material go ahead and enjoy your faboulous day of screen watching!
Tumblr media
5.  Lancôme Doll Lashes
I really don’t want to make a joke about crybabies anymore so I’ll stop. But seriously, this is hands down one of the best mascaras ever (it’s not waterproof though sorry) and this is coming from someone with very short straight eyelashes. It’s made for you Cancers and it’s the ultimate mascara to complete the Girl Next Door Look.
 If you’re born between July 23 - August 22 you’re a Leo…
We get it, you’re a Leo!! I’ve never met a Leo who did not miss a chance to say they are a Leo. I understand why though, these creatures are charismatic, honest, generous and honestly boastful! Queens of this sign include Jennifer Lopez, Madonna, Kylie Jenner and Selena Gomez. Now, I know this thread is for suggesting products based on people’s signs, but I know for a fact most Leos scrolled down to this section to read whatever compliments I have to say about them.
Tumblr media
Now before you click off read a few SUGGESTIONS that may improve your already extraordinarily beautiful self.
1. Gisou Hair Oil
The ultimate Leo stereotype is that their hair generally matches their ego – they’re both big. Tame your hair and make sure it’s healthy with this golden honey infused serum.
2. Salted Caramel Kylighter
A highlighter approved by King Kylie. This highlighter won’t let your face go missing in the crowd. It will surely make you glow between your friends. Super attention grabbing, this highlighter is strong but not enough to let anyone think you’re a greasy chicken. (if you know you know)
Tumblr media
3. Radiance Plus Golden Flow Booster Clarins
To protect that precious skin of yours while still maintaining your after-vacation bronze, use some of this product to make sure there is still warmth in your face all year round.
4. Murad AHA/BHA Exfoliating Cleanser
After using so many products on your face to look glowing and bronzed all the time, let’s talk about unclogging those pores! To be used only a few times a week, this exfoliating cleanser works like a charm in revitalizing skin.
Tumblr media
5. Tom Ford Perfume
I just feel like Leos need a perfume that is attention seeking, and we all know Tom Ford’s perfumes can be smelled a mile away. Leos please use this scent in order for the crowd to genuinely prepare itself for whatever performance you have in mind.
 If you’re born between August 23 - September 23 you’re a Virgo…
I attract a lot of Virgos in my life and thank god for that! You guys can get a bad rep due to your detail oriented vision and anal uptight attitude. However, ruled by Mercury you are extremely in-tune with your body and feel bad when things aren’t physically your way, which isn’t good but I think the world would collapse without you. Your vibe is standoff-ish but honestly, I would be too if I had this much of my shit together. Critical but honest, you’re not alone – Queen Bee herself is a Virgo and we adore her! Virgo women tend to be perfectionists and harsh on the way they look but honestly it pays off. I loved following up other Virgos including Blake Lively and Lea Michele. Take a few steps back and look over the suggestions:
1. Spirit Dust
Okay so it’s time for your post workout breakfast and you have no idea what to eat, right? Add this to your smoothie to help you destress and enjoy your endorphins all day. You really need this.
Tumblr media
2. Tarte Concealer
How many times have you asked a Virgo for advice and didn’t take it? Always. And how many times have you went back to a Virgo and apologized for not taking the advice? Again, always. Virgos are just known to be the helpers of the zodiac sign, and I’m not saying that they’re perfect (they are) but sometimes they need to hide their shit up due to this reputation, that’s why they need this concealer!
3. Dyson Hair Dryer
You need something fast but also extremely effective to make sure you look effortlessly flawless. I know you can’t stand anything less than perfect, so here is to blow-drying your hair in less than 10 minutes and looking better than everybody else.
4.  Ilia Multi Stick Cheek and Lip
Because Virgos have a practical vibe to them, they love using multi-functioning products. This product can be used on your lips, cheeks, or eyelids! Did I mention it’s certified as “Clean” at Sephora?
Tumblr media
5. JO Malone London Diffuser
Super practical and amazing to put around the house. Virgos love practicality and this is the perfect product to get, you don’t need to worry about a candle burning your house down or refilling your machine with batteries when you have this! You don’t need to think twice!
Tumblr media
That’s it for the first half of the zodiac signs, enjoy.
xx Nina

When I had a car, there were times I'd put just P100 worth of gas in my tank, while other times P1000. I've asked for rides and given rides. There were times i had to walk.... for miles. I've had just P50 to feed myself and I've also had P500 to go out to eat. I’ve had a house full of food and know how it feels to be on an empty stomach for days. I’ve given people clothes and have received clothes. I’ve been in stores cashing out with no worries and I’ve also had to add it up and put it back on the shelf. I’ve paid my bills in full and I’ve had to pay it late, too. I’ve given money and I too have had to ask for it.
We all have highs and lows in life, some certainly more than others, but we’re all just trying to make it.
No one is better than anyone else, and I pity those who think that they are. No matter how big your house is, how new your car is, or how much money sits in your bank account - we all bleed red and will all die someday. Death has no discrimination neither should your life.
The people who pretend they love you so much will leave you standing in all the storms just so they can shine...
Be kind to others.
We are all here to serve.
Stop the power tripping. Your over sized ego wont get you anywhere.
And know not everyone has the same heart as you...
I challenge you to copy and paste this.
Most people won’t because they’re the person I’m talking about.
But if you are genuine, post a picture of yourself.
I bet very few actually read this far.

The Road to Financial Freedom
Eight years ago, I heard about the book of Robert Kiyosaki titled “Rich Dad, Poor Dad” while my favorite college professor was discussing stuff related to  people's financial lives during our class.
I was all ears when she exclaimed that this was a must-read book if we want to receive financial growth. Of course who would not want to be financially blessed? It got me hooked, so I set aside a portion of my allowance everyday until I had substantial amount to buy it.
That book jump started my journey to financial freedom. I learned torrent of new ideas about the term ‘financial literacy’. Because it dispels the myths surrounding money, I had to remove so many cobwebs I had in mind. It seemed like the more I knew, the more confused I became. But I didn't stop. I kept learning all sorts of information, watched videos and seminars, delved into books, and in doing so, it gave me a whole new perspective about money; I was awakened by the importance of financial literacy and finally decided to take charge of my financial future.
The next thing I knew I regarded myself as an advocate for financial literacy education in my own terms. So, I asked myself, what do I have to offer really? I realized that I am no different from the rest who have nothing much. But then, this quest will be meaningless if I cannot share the lessons I gained into my future students. I wondered how?
Fast forward to August 2017, my former colleague, who’s already working in DepEd Pasig, sent me an invitation to join a seven-day seminar-workshop in Laguna. At first, I was a bit hesitant to go because of the professional errands that would be left in school for a week, and besides, my friend told me it would be a tedious workshop as we would develop modules for the K to 12 curriculum. I didn't know what to expect then. But when I learned that some of my former colleagues were also selected as curriculum writers, my desire to go there grew as the days went by. But aside from seeing them again, there was a deeper purpose for my participation; I found the perfect opportunity to make an impact with. The workshop served as my vehicle to partake on this concrete move to equip youngsters with knowledge and skills through developing financial literacy education competencies across grade levels. Needless to say, I owe much gratitude to Bureau of Curriculum Development; their continued trust in my capability sustains my motivation to share whatever knowledge I have accumulated. To date, the exemplars we have made are still a work-in-progress; it was quite a challenging task but the rewards could be astronomical especially for the Filipino learners.
Now the important question however is: Why is there a need to integrate Financial Literacy to the existing K to 12 curriculum?
Somewhere along the way, there are blocks we encounter on the road - these are internal conflicts that make it difficult for an individual to achieve financial growth:
Block No. 1: Scarcity mindset
In reality, there are many people who are trapped into a “scarcity mentality”.
Bo Sanchez, lay preacher and entrepreneur, says, “a money problem is a mind problem, and it's possible that scarcity mindset comes from wrong beliefs: The poor think they deserve to be poor; that money was the tool of the devil, and rich people are crooks, so why would you want to become rich if you think that rich people are bad?”
Having this negative concept about money   prevent people from growing financially.
I have also noticed that a lot of people think that to be financially literate, they should be an accountant or to have a college degree in finance and other related courses. That is not true. There is a lot to learn, and it all starts about developing abundance mindset in the right quadrant and influence. Unless we change our mindset, nothing will happen. We have seen where a lack of financial programming can lead.
Take for example the investment scam that involved the followers of Kapa Ministry International in Davao who were allegedly defrauded of up to P50 billion. True to what Warren Buffet, America’s richest investor says, “Risk comes from not knowing what you’re doing.” Their vulnerability is caused by having a lack of information and illiteracy. And for that matter, a lawmaker proposed financial literacy in high school curriculum recently because Filipinos are investing in anything that they don’t fully understand.
Block No. 2:  My parents, my financial mentors
“Study hard and get good grades so you can land a safe secure job and become rich.” Have you heard this before?
Most of us learn about money from our traditional Filipino parents. I also held to this idea while I was growing up because my parents believed strongly in education. At least in our culture, this conventional wisdom is deeply rooted if I may say, though it may sound ideal, but is it adequate? The perception is if you excelled in studies, abundance would follow. But, if it's that simple, how come everyone is not rich or successful despite earning a good salary or obtaining a profession? Why would someone become a victim of dubious scams despite of being educated? Why do people spend their lives buying liabilities which they think are assets?
Learning financial literacy should not be left to chance.
Robert Kiyosaki says:
Because students leave school without financial skills, millions of educated people pursue their profession successfully, but later find themselves struggling financially. They work harder but don’t get ahead. It is not how to make money, but how to manage money.”
Aside from our parents being our first financial mentors, the above statement explains why many people, myself included, know little to nothing about how money works and minding our ‘own’ business. We just focus on earning money but are poor in managing finances.
Our country is filled with brilliant, talented, and educated individuals but I am always in shock at how they struggle everyday to make ends meet. I used to think that a good education, a stable job, and years of hard work were the formula you need to be successful. However, in its truest sense, financial success is no longer solely defined by academic nor professional success, as it once was.
Block No. 3: Schools produce employers, not entrepreneurs
It’s clear that there’s one thing we can all agree on - financial education is non-existent in school. Why is this so?
I have a tremendous respect for education and learning but the schools seem to focus on the word ‘literacy’ and not ‘financial literacy’. Illiteracy, both in words and numbers, is the foundation of financial stress according to my mentor. Aside from this, schools train good employees, instead of employers. It has prepared us to learn a profession because it's easier to get a job and work for money. There should be a balance.
The three blocks presented above are the most critical part of our journey to financial independence. Sadly, when it comes to handling finances, the skills that most people know is just to earn money, spend it, borrow and repeat. So how do we solve many of life's common problems then?
When we leave school, we may just throw our books away and what remains is our ability to think critically and how to handle money wisely. That's why I firmly believe that we need to invest not just on academic and professional skills, but also on financial education most importantly. Because every life event involves financial decision, acquiring greater financial intelligence is the key to survive. Thus, if we want to harvest a financially literate individual, we need to plant a ‘value’ in our educational system so that the seeds will branch forth and serve its purpose in due time. It is indeed what ‘we know’ that will be our greatest asset and ultimately, the road to financial freedom.

18 Easy Ways to Save Money in Uni
Yes, it is possible to save money even on a student budget.
In fact, it can even be fun too! I personally am going through these ‘easy ways to save money’ and still having a blast. Read on to find out what those are…
1. Attend university for free
Yes, it’s possible. In fact I wrote an entire post about it: Yes, you can go to university for free.
Your options include: grants, bursaries and scholarships, the NHS, Armed Forces, sponsorships, apprenticeships, crowdfunding and traveling abroad.
Not paying for university surprisingly does save a lot of money.
Check out the post fam.
2. House hack
Rent is takes a big chunk of your income every month. Many students just accept their fate and believe it’s part of the deal – gotta pay for rent. But what if you got to keep that £400 that disappears every month?
House hacking is possible: live with your parents, live with a roommate, get a flat and Airbnb the hell out of it, do some property investing or just go live in a tent like this guy.
It requires hustle and research, but it’s doable.
3. Become a minimalist
As the word itself says, learn to live with less. The less money you spend on stuff, the more money you get to save. It’s a simple idea really, and practicing it is strangely refreshing. To quote The Minimalists:Imagine living with less so you could have more time, more passion, more experiences, more growth.
Not only will you save a ton of money, but you won’t be falling trap of the consumer society; always buying and buying and consuming more to fill the empty void inside you. Ask yourself: does buying x really add value to my life? If it doesn’t, why are you buying it, really? And if that answer scares you, it’s time for a change.
4. Cook your own food
You would think this is obvious but many people including students simply don’t cook their own food! Eating out several times a week is EXPENSIVE. Takeaway is EXPENSIVE. There’s no point. Plus cooking your own food makes you better at cooking and even makes the food more delicious (yes hello this is my ratatouille and it is delicious).
Keep the restaurants and takeaways for special occasions. The more you eat out the less you appreciate it that event of having someone else prepare and lay it out in front of you. Going to a restaurant is a huge event for me nowadays – and now I enjoy it ten times more.
5. Do a ton of discounting
There are a lot of discounts out there for students. A LOT. You just gotta find them. Here is a list of cool stuff you can get student discount on. Get all the railcards and student cards, you never know when they can come in handy.
Look around when you’re on the streets or out shopping. There might be a student sale or some sweet discount out there. And don’t be ashamed to ask the barman whether they do student discounts – we’re all trying to survive here.
6. Hack your loan: start investing
Maybe a little more advanced but a great way to save and hack your money. Following the 15% rule, use the loan money to invest. The minute you receive your loan money, send off a percentage to get invested. Not only will you be saving money, but the interest means you’ll be earning more money on the side! I’m telling you – this is loan hacking. Here’s a guide to getting started with investing.
7. Set a budget every time you go out
Yes, your friends might make fun of you and call you a loser but no worries – you’ll be the one graduating with money in your pockets.
But seriously, set a budget. Take only cash, if that works for you. Use an app, do your thing. Learn to control yo’self. Here’s a snazzy guide to budgeting.
8. Compare all your bills: gym, phone, software etc
Take all your ‘mandatory expenses’ and try to decrease them. Your phone bill, the gym, that software, maybe even gas and electricity. Try and find someone else who does it for cheaper. Spend an afternoon on it and then forget about it – you could save hundreds in the long run.
9. Work towards achieving that 15% rule
The golden 15% rule: actively saving 15% of your income (from loan, parents, etc) every month. Here’s an entire article on how to get started.
This 15% rule is what will get you ‘out the rat race’ and will literally change your life.
Check out the post fam.
10. Do some savings challenges: no spend day, cash challenge, etc
There are tons of random savings challenges out there: no spend day, cash challenge, 33 items challenge. Try some and see how it goes. Here are 6 Different Money Saving Challenges you can try out.
Once you try a few of them, you can pick one and keep going. Make up your own challenge: how much money I can save doing saving challenges. Maybe a little nerdy, but useful in the long run.
challenge: how tall can the coin tower get?
11. Use savings apps
Just like the savings challenges, these apps will encourage you to save ‘by accident’. They use tactics such as rounding up a purchase: you spend £2.50 on a coffee and the app rounds it up to £3.00 and saves you £0.50. Or it just randomly takes out some money at odd times of the day/week.
The best savings apps are: Chip (read a review here), Monzo and Folio. You can also try out some investing with MoneyBox.
12. Do NOT buy the next cool gadget
Still not a minimalist? That’s fine, but there’s still no point in consuming for the sake of consuming. If your phone is working perfectly fine and the next version comes out – how about not buying it? Remember, will it really add value to your life? Probably not, and if you think about it will probably remove value since your pockets will be a little lighter.
13. Buy stuff second hand
The UK is one of the few places which is really good at this: second hand stuff. There are charities littered all over the streets and you can find a few gems here and there. You find stuff online too with our good friends Gumtree and Craigslist. Think about it, do I really need this thing to be brand new? If not, go do some second-hand shopping. You’d be surprised with what you can find…
14. Make sure your employer doesn’t make you pay tax
If you earn under £11,500 a year, you don’t need to pay tax. If you do, you pay 20%. When working at a part time job, it’s unlikely you’ll be earning more than your allowance, however your employer is still likely to put you under the PAYE scheme. Normally, the HMRC will send you a tax refund called P800. But if you want to claim it now, you can do so using a P50 form. Some nice quick and easy money.
15. Flat parties instead of going out
Going out in the UK is expensive, especially if you live in the area of London (I don’t know how you people survive). How about doing a flat party/drinks instead? With my group of friends we regularly do poker nights, board game drinking nights and even some home-cooking and chilling.
There are tons of ways to have fun without going out. Yes, I sound like a boring old trout, but it’s totally true. And if you’re friends are only interested in having fun when their ££ is flying away, look for some different friends who’ll chill at home with you. Trust me, they’re the cool ones.
16. No book buying
Google Scholar and Google Books can be your saviour for both research and text books. All the stuff the uni makes you pay for – how about getting it for free? And if Google Scholar and Books don’t have what you’re looking for, ask someone else at uni if you can buy their book second hand. Or… jump onto Gumtree or Craigslist. Doing a bit of hustling and finding cheaper textbooks can go a long way.
17. Find free stuff and use it
Students are known to be good at getting free stuff. Save the Student has an awesome list of free stuffyou can take advantage of as a student.
Other places to get free stuff are: Fresher’s and societies fairs, student gigs, only using free trial (Spotify here I come), using the Gumtree ‘for free’ section, attending launch days (a supermarket, cinema, shop opening up), and cashback apps.
18. Learn to travel hack
Travel hacking is the ultimate key to traveling for cheap and making it enjoyable at the same time. It doesn’t mean trying to cut every single penny and starving yourself all day, it’s simply being clever with your money: cooking at the hostel instead of eating out, not buying useless souvenirs, doing your research before taking public transport, etc.
After 2 years of traveling on a tight budget, I believe I mastered it using apps such as Couchsurfing, Ryanair and GoEuro. For more info on how to travel hack, I wrote a snazzy guide on mastering the art of budget travel.
So – 18 ways to save money as a college student. Some are easier than others, but they’re all doable. And the result could be hundreds or even thousands of pounds saved up! What could you do with an extra £1,000 a year? You could invest it, build an emergency fund, save up for a nice trip, or even get started on your path to Financial Independence. The possibilities are infinite, and you get to choose what happens with them.

Huawei Announces New Smartglasses Powered By HarmonyOS
When Huawei introduced HarmonyOS in August 2019, the operating system was a replacement for the Google Mobile Services version of Android that the manufacturer no longer had access to. Making matters worse, exactly a year to the day that it was put on the entity list, Huawei was given more bad news in the form of a change to U.S. export rules. Huawei lost access to its cutting-edge chips, even the ones it designed itself, thanks to a change in U.S. export rules that banned foundries from shipping to Huawei any cutting-edge chips that were manufactured using American equipment. While Huawei may feel that the device will challenge the Galaxy Z Flip 3, the P50 Pocket will be allowed to use the 4G version of the Snapdragon 888 only. Still, Huawei continues to roll along as the company also introduced its latest pair of smartglasses and the first from Huawei to drop the Gentle Monster co-branding from the product's name. Huawei's Cela is the voice assistant used on the smartglasses and it is best if the user is already part of the HarmonyOS ecosystem. Huawei has placed sensors inside the glasses to help determine the position of the user's head compared to his spine.
