I enjoy that he is very flawed and volatile. #This episode of the audio drama has a lot of great breakdown scenes featuring JC - and they all deserve a feature. #But underlying this comic is a small meta comment of 'ah man I have too many comics of JC just wailing sadly' #My goal is to draw 6-8 comics per episode - I sometimes have to truncate and cut good scenes out. #Especially when a large majority is just different flavours of trauma and toxic relationships to your self-worth. #I would also like to make a note here that just because you lose the ability to do something that is very tied to your core identity- #-does not mean your life is over. It will feel like the end of the world. It will send you into a spiral of grief. It will hurt so badly. #Sometimes we do not realize how tied up our identities can be in certain things until we are cut loose. #You don't lose yourself. I promise the pain will fade in time. I promise you will find other things to tether you. I promise you will be ok #Life moves forwards. Time moves forwards. You move forwards. #Ego death just means an opportunity for ego rebirth. You are never committed to being the same person forever. #To wrap this around to JC: Yeah I love the twist with the core transfer but man I would have loved to see JC accept the loss. #Obviously it happens for a reason (story) but I can have my AUs. I want a story where the angels didn't fall, they jumped. they clipped their own wings, knowing their Master wouldn't have a use or a need for them once they were damaged and less-than-holy. they could not defeat the Tyrant who exerted absolute control over their lives, so they abandoned heaven their homeland in exchange for independence, accepting exile as its own form of freedom. and hell is just the place where all unwanted things are sent--be they angels or souls who just will not obey.

#been looking through old story ideas and remembering that as a teenager #i processed religious trauma by turning it into blasphemous creative writing #there's also the story where the protagonist was a vampire and a friend of jesus's mom #and so was personally responsible for the resurrection of christ #and the one where satan was the mother figure of all the angels in heaven #and the 'Rebellion' was actually satan leaving her abusive spouse to protect her kids #anyways i have many feelings about being raised christian and all of those feelings are Spite

The thing about the "fridged" trope is that obviously you can't have a female love interest dying as a defining moment for a male character because that's not feminist, but you also can't have a male love interest dying as a defining moment for a female character because then she's just going to have an arc revolving around her relationship with a man and that's also not feminist, and you also can't kill off a love interest from a gay relationship or a relationship involving a nonbinary person because that's burying your queers, which is at least as bad as misogyny if not even worse, and now suddenly you can't kill off romantic partners at all in stories because no matter the demographics, it's going to be problematic somehow, which is... a pretty ridiculous limitation to impose on storytelling.

And, like, it would be satisfying to have a solution other than "it depends on context if not straight-up vibes, and it's usually very reasonable for audience members to have a range of opinions on the execution of one specific instance," but. Yeah, you do kind of have to just vibe check it in a deeply subjective manner sometimes.

#thinking about a few things and characters here... but especially about amelia infinity train #when i watched book 1 the first time i was like “...hey wait her motivation all revolves around this One Man? idk about this” #but then watching book 3 and noticing the whole unwanted child allegory #plus a very good video essay about the historical feminist context #i've come around on it completely now. sometimes men do die and it fucks women up #and amelia's story is handled with care that gives her agency; plus traits outside her husband-centric trauma. #it works in my personal subjective and constantly evolving opinion is what i'm saying

Going to be really honest, if you're disabled, you truly don't owe people - or the world - access to your diagnoses, symptoms, accessibility needs (and why you need them), mental health history, trauma, or anything like that.

The urge to force people to lay themselves out so they can be picked apart, consumed, and feasted upon by people who demand that their comfort outweigh that of a disabled person's is an ableist pipe dream. It is the urge to control that which you feel you have no control over, and it's your right to refuse to play that game, that role.

I like Strange New Worlds but boy is their Spock behavior strange.

"taking out" the Vulcan in Spock should make his body feel off but ffs he's still Spock. I don't think they intended it this way but the way they wrote this whole scenario is like having an AfroLatina character "lose" their Latina side and suddenly not be able to make a tortilla or speak their native spanish. I mean. What?

Their whole narrative on him being human and Vulcan and showing "human" as like the fun/passionate side he's denying himself is starting to feel very anti-Vulcan, which in its own way feels super white centrist. We can go all in on the bacon scene but I'm not Jewish so more knowledgable Jewish people about the cultural *disaster* that choice was can cover the mess that is but... Yikes.

They've even done mixed race struggles better with other characters. B'Elanna in Voyager has a great arc reconciling her Klingon and human sides throughout multiple episodes and none of them imply weird shit like this. They all encourage her to accept herself where's she's at, no matter how much Klingon or human "percentage" that means. It just means both.

And in all fairness, B'Elanna's portrayal is in no way perfect but its better than *this*.

Someone on Twitter said this would've been a much more impactful episode if Spock spent all of it fearing he'd lose all connection to his Vulcan side, only to realize that (like his human adopted sister!!) He is still a child of Vulcan regardless of his geneology/biological makeup. But nah. This. *Bacon*.

After such a strong story about hope, augments, refugees, and prejudice a few episodes ago we get this? Shenanigans.

#shadow and bone #grishaverse #sab #aleksander morozova #the darkling #pro darkling #sab meta #‘he acts like he isn’t the villain’ like yeah I guess if you want to examine it without any deeper analysis #when the statement itself is actually fascinating to put into a narrative context and analyze the means by which certain steadfast roles #are enacted throughout the books #and the larger implications of character want/desire and leading goal vs world state and perceived morality #largely due to prejudice and war time sentiments #as well as the individual harm caused and the way it’s significance becomes questionable when placed in stark contrast #to the broader political and socioeconomic climate #which doesn’t even take into consideration individual character roles and the doylist analysis of their relative functions as ideas #instead of entire personalities with depth #when you give an idealistic character a goal larger than life with a tactical relevance over a moral one #within a story that also centers around a broader goal of ‘saving the world’ as well as personal trauma #and attempt to liken both to the same moral equivalence and significance #then try to pit them against each other #especially when your narratively condemned villain desires more than anything to protect the masses and be loved for it #showing a fascinating level of genre unawareness. yet displaying a relative awareness to the role he has been unwillingly cast as #because he is both at odds with the genre but not with the general moral tone of the story and it's discordant messages #that rely on the pov of a character that fundamentally cannot understand him #because of his place in the story #and cannot understand the world state #because of her place in the story #you are going to get statements like this #sure yes. he ‘says it like he isn’t the villain’ #but come on. we can do better

no matter whether ppl are trying to make zk's canon relationship out to be sibling coded or associative friends or whatever else ppl make up i feel it all comes from this place of people that don't ship it being unable to handle zuko and katara's canonically deep and intimate friendship at the end of show without (whether subconsciously or not) perceiving it as some kind of threat to whatever katara or zuko ship they DO ship (usually either k/a or z/s or m/z)

they don't know how to acknowledge/write zk (and i don't think them being a m/f ship is divorced from this) having their canonically close friendship alongside whatever they ship because that closeness, no matter how platonic, can't supersede the romance of their own ship. so they just lazily write it off as "siblings" or convince themselves they weren't ever that close in the first place or that katara still secretly hates zuko or something in order to get out of the bind of allowing them to be close friends even if you ship them with other people 🤷‍♀️

its like if youre gonna use sa as a repeat Thing that happens in your story, thats more or less an inescabable thing for the characters (particularily women) in it then one would hope you as the author would have like something to say about the subject. like maybe a point to make about it or the lasting trauma of it or the process of recovering from it. if the characters it keeps happening to just sort of freak out and then move on OR their struggles with it are off screen while the actual assault was shown in full detail then idk. is it worth putting in there? death and hell on you as a writer

-Sugar slowly realizes that her trainer abandoned her and starts hating humans, eventually dying and becoming a Hisuian Zoroark.

-Emmet assumes that she died in Hisui (which she did, technically) and has a reasonable grieving period, until she reappears as a ghost type. At which point Emmet is absolutely horrified to realize that Sugar's been in horrible pain for the last 100 something years, thinking that he left her to freeze to death in Hisui.
