Wanted: Help To Develop Sonic Movie Characters - Lets Reach The Big Ones

Ok, so there are going to be quite a few updates here, and I need you to pay attention now because this is incredibly important.

I am looking for fan-artists and writers to help with this project. Especially fan artists because I am going to be developing a few characters I'd happily pay money for, for arts.

I want Jim Carrey and Lee Majdoub to see this as well, so please like, share and reblog as widely as you can. Thank you x

For those of you who don't know, I recently started writing in the Sonic The Hedgehog fandom for the first time.

I published a fanfic called Please Don't Leave Me, on AO3 and Tumblr, which you can find here.

It focuses on the debilitating C-PTSD that Dr Robotnik clearly suffers from, and the panic attacks he begins re-experiencing due to Agent Stone's friendship creeping in, finally forcing past traumas forward.

There are a lot of things that I noticed about Jim Carrey's Robotnik, and the friendship he has with Lee Majdoub's Agent Stone.

I thought at first that I was just projecting, as a survivor of domestic violence, and a witness of domestic violence towards others. But this guy clearly has more than just 'a chip on his shoulder' (as Carrey said in an interview), and it really made me go back and re-analyse his character again, to find out why this stuck with me so much.

I couldn't possibly imagine Jim Carrey coming out of retirement to play some random part on the big screen for some random branded film, just because some director or Carrey fan randomly selected him to be up there.

He is an incredible guy, a deep thinker, and sees things that others simply don't. There had to be an incredibly important message in that film series, to convince him to come out of retirement. Right in the middle of cancel culture and the way Hollywood and society is going, especially in America, and given the dark history of Sonic The Hedgehog... I think I've got it.

Sonic is rebooting, and Jim Carrey was selected to lead it.

The fact that Carrey is not too keen on modern trends and technology anyway, and the way it is destroying society, makes him perfect to play the role of Robotnik.

A Word On Bullying and Forced Terrorism

First of all, many years ago I saw this Ted Talk by Aaron Stark - I Was Almost A School Shooter.

Aaron talks about how he was bullied mercilessly as a child, raised by drug addicts and rejected by his mother on aggressive terms. He had no clean clothes or food, no stable home, a poor education, was overweight, self harmed and had many other issues going on.

In this talk, Aaron courageously braved the stage in order to create awareness of his past situation, and to help those suffering today.

He braved the stage to thank his best friend for sticking by him through thick and thin, even though he stole from him, lied to him and did everything in his power to push him away.

He braved the stage to thank his wife and children, and for showing others that even in the darkest of times there is hope. There is a future.

I found Aaron Stark's talk incredible, and his courage to speak out about such a controversial subject, so confidently and heartbrokenly at the same time. (I cried, and felt immense pride for him.)

Aaron Stark's childhood situation is apparently quite a common thing in America, and so is clearly an uncontrollable issue that needs more work put in, and kindness.

I immediately thought of the relationship between Agent Stone and Robotnik, and remembered how angry and scared I felt when I had been abused constantly on a daily basis. To the point where I even questioned whether I had been kidnapped as a child, because I simply could not process or think how or why I was in this dark situation when others were not.

I am now over 30, and I still have frequent panic attacks, starve myself, push others away and think of suicide. I have abandonment issues, multiple phobias, and have quite often psychologically self harmed without realising.

I by no means had the worst of narcissistic abuse in the world, and yet the damage it caused was absolutely catastrophic. So with this analysis of Dr Robotnik's character, I wanted to create a mini series, and have your help with it so that others can speak out too.

Ideally, I want Jim Carrey and Lee Majdoub to see this. Not for personal attention, but for consideration of character development.

I am scared, in a way because some of the things I have been through have been horrific, and I can't say too much without identifying myself online. I don't want to be identified online.

But I wanted to explore that past for Dr Robotnik, or have elements of it used perhaps in the upcoming movies, as it seems likely that this character development/story arc has already been placed since day one and is in full swing.

When Aaron Stark discussed his best friend's loyalty, in the Ted interview, he said something that really stuck with me, summed up Agent Stone and Robotnik's relationship perfectly, and made me want to quote it.

"But thankfully I wasn't alone in that darkness.

My best friend who had saved me, when I was sleeping in the shed, he saw this place that I was in.

Even though I had stolen from him, and lied to him, and taken his belongings and ruined it all, he didn't care, he still brought me in and showed me acts of kindness. Just simple acts.

It wasn't the kind of overbearing kindness where they say 'Is there anything I can do for you,' or 'is there something I can do to make you better?' or 'how can I help you?' It was literally just sitting down next to me, 'hey, would you like a meal? Let's watch a movie.'

He treated it like it was a Tuesday, he treated me like I was a person. When someone treats you like a person, when you don't even feel like a human, it'll change your entire world, and it did to me."

I haven't properly written fan fiction in over ten years, and I'm sure that there are others who can write this story much better than me.

But I am going to put into it what I can do, and I would love for others to explore this as and how they see fit, and publish what they can, and give character analysis and feedback.

The one thing Jim Carrey said was, he loves the fact that Sonic is about family, and love. I can't imagine him playing Eggman without some kind of character redemption.

I think it'd be cute as Stone helps Robotnik fit in with his own little family, if he starts realising (just like Sonic) that there are many things that he has never done... and his new family helps him with that too.

Also an important message is that, Sonic grew up alone but had help and support right from the very beginning, with people who loved and care for him and tried to safeguard him, shaping him into the innocent and pure person he is, despite everything.

Whereas Robotnik didn't, so the comparison is incredibly important there but doesn't stop them from growing as characters and working together, and doing the right thing in the end. Yes they can both change the world for the better, but only if they work together.

I also think it'd be cute if the two families are direct opposites and parallels of each other, like a study piece. Also displaying the faults and successes of the fostering system.

Example; Tom and Maddie are Sonic's foster parents. Sonic is like the difficult ADHD child, and they don't judge him or abandon him, they try and work with that. Tom literally quits his promotion to take care of Sonic, placing him at top priority and endangering himself in the process to ensure the correct safeguarding of Sonic.

Dr Robotnik does not understand this form of love, and asks why he would throw his life away for this creature, who simply didn't belong. I believe this is a direct projection of his own feelings, and the way he was treated as a child. He wasn't a person, he was a freak, a creature, trash and nobody cared enough to even check if he was alive or safeguard him.

Maddie's sister tries to keep Maddie away from Tom, obviously hurt herself once before and fearing that Tom will hurt the one she loves (Maddie.) However she comes to forgive Tom and love Sonic, realising that sometimes you just have to let people love you, and heartbreak is an emotion you just have to risk while hunting for happiness.

In comparison, Agent Stone tries to be the best friend to Dr Robotnik that he probably never had as a child. Therefore comparing how he slipped through the foster systems cracks (no support, unkind families interested in the money side of fostering only etc.)

(Similar to how Tails never had a friend when he was bullied and finds one in Sonic. I believe Sonic is his hero because he never stops going, no matter what. Just like how Dr Robotnik never stops going, no matter what, yet is a very misunderstood character due to his reluctance to open up to people. His defense mechanism is to project what he's convinced people always wanted to see in him - evil.

I believe that if another is involved (a female, for example - important), she would become the surrogate sister/mother/best friend that Robotnik badly missed growing up with, and still misses desperately even now.

This could be Agent Stone's sister, allowing Stone and Robotnik to have a gay/brotherly relationship in the movies, with the sister being the third wheeler - generally doing everything to annoy Robotnik, but constantly being forgiven because she is as stubbornly irritating as he is, and there's a lot of squabbles and exposure therapy there.

Therefore when Dr Robotnik becomes part of their family, she sort of adopts him as a surrogate mother, and helps him work through his issues with Stone (calling him a pain in the ass though) kind of like how Dr Leonard Hoffstader and Penny did with Sheldon in the Big Bang Theory.

Where Robotnik is precise, perfect and very OCD, she is scatty, unreliable, young, humorous, fairly uneducated and needs to grow as a character and learn responsibility. But she can kick ass and will do anything to defend the ones she loves the most.

Can I also just say that Jenna Ortega would be perfect for this role, if they do not find someone even better. There has to be a certain level of sarcasm and dark humour that only Dr Robotnik could appreciate.

In fact Stone's sister could even be adopted and have suffered herself through the fostering system, making friends and struggling, but she always had her wingman Stone to look after her wounds and cuddle her as a brother when she was sad and alone. Again, the comparisons.

This could be kept a secret from Robotnik for a while (probably not purposefully), so he suddenly finds her very intriguing. If the directors wanted to take this route, perhaps there is some growing tension there at some point when the doctor grows to accept her and love her as Stone's sister, and questions whether he's attracted to her romantically, or as a person, a little sister and he just wants to protect her and annoy her back in return.

This would open the possibility for a few plot developments:

Stone and Robotnik have a gay relationship. Robotnik is distracted by #sister and Stone notices (or doesn't) and worries. Like a Will/Elizabeth/Jack thing from Pirates Of The Caribbean.

Sister later has a baby with a man who abandons her (again the comparison of abandonment.) Stone and Dr Robotnik take charge and Dr Robotnik tries to become the father he never had, because his child will come first.

Stone accepts Robotnik and sister as a couple. The two males continue with a brotherly love, and a threesome family relationship. Stone always wanted to help people as a child, and become a therapist or an agent, so that's what he's become. He has a heart of gold, and the couple worship him for making the world a better place to live in. The importance of his character - protection, safeguarding, love, help, forgiveness.

Part 2

Summary: Steve “The King” Harrington tries his own medicine as he meets Y/n L/n.

Pairing: Steve Harrington x Flirty Fem! Reader.

A/n: so, enjoy this little idea that I had whilst listening to Feels by Calvin Harris. If you want the next parts please tell me, I’m just testing the waters with this one!

Wednesday the 5th of August 1987.

It was a hot Wednesday afternoon when Y/n entered Family Video, skin glistening with small beads of sweat as she walked all the way from her house to the movie store.

She wandered off to the small refrigerator full of beverages and snacks of all kinds, taking a big bottle of water, mouth, and throat dry as she puts it down on the counter, leaving it there and going off to wander through the different short aisles that made up the store.

She heard some noise at the back of the store, so she supposed that the workers would be restocking the back. She took her sweet time while she scanned rows and rows full of films, indecisive about which one she should get. Walking around to the second aisle she saw one of the workers stacking movies on the lower shelves.

Luscious brunette hair and broad shoulders made heat course through her body even if the shop had the AC set to at least 70 °F. He somehow noticed her presence behind him, quietly looking at how his arms and back moved as he stacked the different cases neatly on the shelf.

-Hey! Welcome to Family Video, sorry I didn’t notice you coming in, you were quite silent, huh? -he said dashing her with the prettiest smile she had seen for a while.

-If I knew you were here, I wouldn’t have been as quiet. -her tone was slightly suggestive as she was only testing the waters, and even if she was being completely forward, she did not want to come off too strong.

As he was stunned for a moment at her reply, she took the time to take in his features, delicate and handsome ones all topped off with what seemed to be a great personality, seeming as if the world catered to him, Steve as his name tag read, for her.

-So, do you need help with anything? -he tried his hardest not to stutter the words that were coming out of his mouth, as he was still shocked at the straightforward attitude that the girl in front of him displayed.

-Yes, some help would be fantastic! there is just so much to choose from, and I have literally no idea what to get. -her palms flattened over her skirt as she tried and put on her most angelic and innocent look.

His eyes were drawn to the movement of her hands going over her thighs trying his best to look up as fast as possible, seeing a special glint in the girl’s eyes.

-Soo… - he said indicating that he wanted to know and say her name.

-Y/n, that’s me. -she stood politely in front of him, waiting for further recommendations and conversation.

-I’m Steve, nice to meet you. -as he pronounced his name grin on his face, her eyes widened in recognition of the name, connecting the dots. At first, she did not realize that the man she was talking to and daring to try and flirt with was no other than Steve Harrington, the sensation between Hawkins’ girls due to his perfect Casanova reputation. -as I was saying, what do you feel like tonight? Crying, laughing, being entertained, scaring the shit out of yourself just for pure leisure? – his tone was just made to make someone smile, and he did that to her.

Y/n’s mind was already clouded with pure infatuation even if they had just begun to talk three minutes ago. The sweetness that his voice was coated with, as well as her soft gaze on her just wanting to be there to help her.

-Maybe I want to be entertained and laugh a little, you know just have a good time.

-Follow me then, I might have just the perfect recommendation. -he walked to the aisle she looked around before, kneeling down and taking a case and showing it to her. -Came out years ago but “The Life of Brian” is one of the funniest movies I have watched.

He came back up, towering again over her, closer to her with his hand moved forward handing her the movie. Y/n’s breath hitched as she noticed the closeness, being able to feel the warmth that Steve’s body radiated. Her hand took the case brushing her fingers with his on purpose, wanting him to feel what she was already feeling.

-If you’re always this efficient I might just come every day. -she smirked at him, eyebrows going upwards at her own comment.

Steve did not even know how to answer, and that was not a normal occurrence when the ladies ™ came down to Family Video in hopes to find a movie to watch. He usually had every answer and reply in the book, and right now it just felt as if Y/n tore all of its pages. So he just went straight to the cashier, body tense and mind racing at the fact that he was just so embarrassed about not being able to have the perfect comeback to impress the girl.

-Would that be all? -he said once he was already behind the counter, still red in the face voice breaking at the sight of the smile that still played on her lips even if he was not his best Steve right now.

-The water bottle and the movie, please and thank you.

-Both on the house. -he blurted out, wanting to finally make a good impression on her, one that would make her come back, not just to Family Video to return the movie that she was about to leave with, but to talk to him again as well.

-Seriously? -her head sideways as she stared at him in disbelief, also mixed with a bit of a funny look.

-Yes, we sometimes do it so that people will keep coming in, sometimes it works and sometimes it doesn’t, but we have to try y’know?

- It’s always good to try, as I for sure will return. -she smiled at him taking the articles now in a bag, from him, doing the same as before brushing their fingers together on purpose. -Hopefully you’ll be here whenever I come back? – she kept her touch lingering on him whilst she asked him, wanting him to just want more of her as she was about to leave.

-Yeah, totally. I have like the longest shifts on here, so the chance is I’ll be here next time you come over here. -he definitely felt how her fingers touched his delicately and subtly, and fuck did he want her touch. Her personality making him want time to just run fast to the time she comes by to return the movie.

-Great, see you, Steve. -she said smiling widely as she pronounced his name, waving goodbye bag in hand.

-See you! Have a good day Y/n! – he said a bit hushed as he did not know if you heard the last part as you had already closed the door behind you.

But you turned your face to him, smirking one last time, before continuing your way home, swaying your hips a bit more than usual as she knew that he was looking at her, which he certainly was, turning himself to the side to not to keep looking, but his brain made him look to her again, having one last look as she disappeared from his view, muttering a low “fuck” to himself.

The Haunting of Miss Caroline Marsden (snippet)

The audience’s applause could be heard two storeys down, everyone knew the name Caroline Marsden. She stepped from behind the tall black curtains putting on her best smile, she had practised everyday since she was ten for this exact moment. Her sleek black heels clacked on the hardwood floor, she felt as if she would slip with every step she took. It seemed like their cheering would never stop, this stage was so big, it would take at least twenty seconds to walk to the desk. Caroline kept her performed smile on, waving back to the hundreds of staring faces who claimed to know everything about her; who all adored her. Finally, Caroline was on the other side of the stage, shaking hands with an equally, but not quite as, famous TV host. She sat down on the bouncy red couch, feeling the bumpy rhinestones on her dress under her.

‘Welcome Caroline, it’s so lovely to have you here! Can we all give her another big round of applause?’ Oh god not again. Their hands must be red at this point. Did she even care though? The applause is what she lived for, she needed it. Caroline continued smiling, her face still like stone on the brink of collapse. The clapping slowly faded and Caroline locked eyes with the host once again.

‘So, Please Let Go, huh? Coming to theatres on March 10th; What an amazing piece of work this is!’

‘Oh yes, thank you John.’

‘Why don’t you tell us a little bit more about this film?’

As soon as that question is asked it feels as though everything fades, all sounds are muffled and her vision subsides, Caroline is only able to see her memories and her art.

‘Well, Please Let Go is a drama piece about a girl, Rachael, who is in a difficult first relationship and doesn’t know how to get out of it because she’s afraid of what her partner will say or do. It’s a very important piece of film that I think a lot of young people can relate to and find comfort in.’ she talked so highly of her work it made her want to vomit. Caroline never wanted to be one of those directors who were stuck up and talked freely about how amazing they were. She knew she and her art were perfect but no one was allowed to use that against her, so she had to be perceived as humble. But the applause gets to her, and she can’t help but talk like she’s the only person in the world.

‘That’s amazing. Now what’s the backstory to this film? How did you come to create it?’

Caroline smiled wider than she thought possible and let out a breath of satisfaction. This was her favourite question. She sat up and fixed her posture, wanting to look her absolute best.

‘Well it’s actually based on the book my partner wrote with the same name. I remember reading it the first time and being so moved by it, I just couldn’t stop thinking about it.’

‘Did you two write this together?’

‘Oh my partner Rose definitely helped me a lot, I mean it was based on their book, of course I’d look to her for guidance.’

There were soft ‘aaw’s in the crowd as Caroline spoke of Rose, someone these fans should be quite familiar with by now. The amount Caroline talks about them online and in interviews was astounding, she was shocked no one told her to be quiet by now.

‘That’s lovely, and where is Rose tonight?’

‘She’s in Seattle on her book tour, promoting her new limited edition version of Please Let Go. I hope they’re watching me in their hotel room tonight.’ Caroline spoke with a less forced and more fond smile, thinking about her loved partner watching her from afar. Caroline looked right down the barrel of one of the huge film cameras on set, ‘I love you Rosey, I hope you’re having a good time over there.’ The audience erupted in cheers once again, Caroline’s ears didn’t respond to it, blocking it out as she dreamt of her partner being here with her talking about their new movie.

She sighed, opening the fridge to find another drink, but she had already wasted them all. She hung her head in shame before turning to the clock on the microwave. ‘7:09AM’ it read, that familiar pit sat in her stomach realising she’s gone another night without sleep. How long has it been now? 75 hours? It was hard to keep track, Caroline had more important things to think about, like her premiere in two weeks, her fitting tomorrow, or well today. And the funeral on Friday. Before she could even stop herself she let out a quiet chuckle.

‘What kind of heartless bastard holds a funeral on a Friday? Like come on Jill, we all have better things to be doing, I’d rather spend my Friday dressed in a bikini on the beach with a drink in one hand and a woman in the other! Not standing around people I hate, mourning a person who shouldn’t even be having this so called fucking celebration!' Caroline shouted to no one, throwing her half empty bottle at the wall opposite her, gasping as it shattered against the paint. She stared at the wet stain on the wall, trying to slow her breathing back to normal but failing completely. She left the glass pile on the floor, too distressed to even think about cleaning it. She slowly walked back to her chair and slumped down, giving a long dramatic sigh. Caroline hadn’t felt like this since college. Excessive depression and nothing to help it, not a single thing could pull her out of her ‘funk’ as her mom would call it. Well there was one thing, but she was gone now.

i’m an organised, extroverted introvert, fairly shy, creative, nerdy girl. i’m not one to judge you for anything, whether that be disability, sexuality, interests etc. i’m autistic so it’s always been hard for me to make friends, but once i click with you, i open up and become a super chaotic, funny, fan-girl. i’m also quite creative. i’ve been editing and filming videos since i was about 10. and i also play acoustic guitar and sing, which i’ve been doing since i was 6/7 years old. i also like to read, usually fantasy or romance, but i sometimes steer towards an autobiography too. sometimes i game as well, but i stick to the basics such as the sims and animal crossing.

my favourite bands are ac/dc, queen, fleetwood mac and blondie. and i love playing fleetwood mac songs on my guitar and singing them. i also love watching movies, especially marvel movies, which i sit and make up theories about all the time.

my likes are respectful, kind, non-judgemental people with a good sense of humour. also love if you’re nerdy to some extent, just having some sort of special interest and feeling comfortable talking and ranting about it. my love language is physical touch with words of affirmation coming in second, so the more affection and reassurance, the better.

my dislikes are judgemental, controlling, toxic people. i don’t like it when you don’t give me space and are overly clingy. also if you look bored when i talk about my interests, it hurts me as special interests mean a lot to me as an autistic person. if you aren’t accepting and understanding of me as an autistic, bisexual woman, i won’t like you that much, as a friend or romantic partner.

newsies dream cast, part 1

if newsies is in a constant cycle of new productions, it’s about time we get a perfect cast! this is who I’d want as the characters in a remake in the round in 2022

Jordan Fisher as Mush Meyers

livesies was racist and cast a white guy as mush, who was an actual real mixed racial historical figure who was more than likely forced to live on the streets because it was illegal for him to even exist. therefore he gets first on this list just to make up for that even though it could never be enough to make up for that great disservice. perhaps he gets a new solo too because frankly he has always deserved one. I think Jordan would suit the role well with his astounding voice and positive attitude similar to that of a puppy, just as Mush always has.

Max Casella as Joseph Pulitzer AND Mr Wiesel

Max also deserves so much better than what disney gave him. He continued to do disney movies and their broadway shows for twenty years and is an accredited stage actor who helped earn them some 13 Ed’s Tony’s for the stage play of the lion king which is still Disney theatricals biggest gross to this day. He actively asked to be in newsies on broadway and they wouldn’t give him a job! He loves the film so much that he was the only actor from it to show up to the broadway red carpet as well. He deserves every role. And!! Most importantly Pulitzer will finally be portrayed by a real Jewish man!

I also just think it would be very funny to see him as the man he was heckling with as Racetrack, very funny 10/10

David Moscow as Mayer Jacobs

This is the clearest choice on the list and needs no explanation. David is still an activist in workers rights (among other things like sustainable food) to this day! (I did consider putting bernie. sanders on this list for shits and giggles but would never consider him for an actual production.)

Giuseppe Bausillo as Racetrack Higgins

This is the only member of the stage cast I would consider hiring back. He fits the role very well and Bob and Noni’s “Italian beanpole” description. He did excellent before and frankly deserves more credit for it.

Ann-Margret as Medda Larkin

She is still out here thriving today!

Brendan Fraser as Bryan Denton

You can 100% accredit this and the next one to @maggs-is-a-muppet but they’re right and I’m saying it louder for the people in the back.

Josh Sundquist as Crutchy

Please look up his stand up comedy if you’ve not seen it. Very funny man and, importantly, we do not fake disabilities in this house!

On that note, do you of any young visually impaired actors who would be applicable for Kid Blink? I would gladly support them but after quite a bit of searching I’ve only found Johnny Depp, who happens to be blind in his left eye (though I think any visual difficulty would be applicable) but he is much too old for the part. I thought the thirty somethings on broadway were too old but he’s twice their age and i do think that would detract from the plot, sorry Johnny.

Ele Keats as Esther Jacobs

Matt Bennett as David Jacobs

I’m not saying every Jacobs needs to be a major proponent of bernie but maybe I am. Anyways his album Terminal Cases is iconic.

Auli’i is so talented she got most adults lifelong goal of voicing a disney princess at merely 15. She knows how to make a strong female character also nice and kind.

Christian Bale as Teddy Roosevelt

From his initial hatred of newsies and musical kind to doing three more the next year despite swearing off them, to earning awards for the largest online following from the sheer number of newsies fan sites alone, to becoming possibly the most well known Welsh actor of all time, to singing Santa Fe every time he sees Bill Pullman in the wild, CB has gone on quite the journey of accepting his love for newsies, and it’s time that journey comes full circle. Yes we’re going to spend half the budget paying him for less than two minutes of screen time. Yes, this is very much only in the absence of Robin Williams.

In Character: J.T. Walsh

When most people think of J.T. Walsh, they recall the numerous menacing sons of bitches he played. The murders, the thieves, the liars and the assholes – no one could play mean quite like Walsh. But upon digging deeper, it’s clear that Walsh was capable of so much more than depicting scumbags. He had compassion, charm, wit and panache. He was an actor’s actor, a working man, an invaluable day player who we lost far too soon to a heart attack in 1998.

Perhaps Walsh’s good friend and collaborator, Billy Bob Thornton said it best: “A real actor doesn’t try to make yourself look good all the time. Because the job of an actor is to portray the character that’s written, and portray it with all your might. J.T. did that everytime he did anything. If J.T. was in a movie that just plain sucked, he never did. He was always perfect.”Five Essential Roles

Good Morning, Vietnam (1987)

Sgt. Major Dickerson

“You stay out of my way, there’ll be no problem. But toy with me, and I’ll make you wish you’d died as a child.”

That says everything you need to know about Sgt. Major Dickerson, the cankerous commander of Robin Williams’ ceaselessly sarcastic Adrian Cronauer. Dickerson is a straight shooter – a military commander ensuring that his duties in the Vietnam War are handled as professionally as possible. But Cronauer isn’t a professional. He makes room for choice and laughter, things that don’t exist in Dickerson’s world. Needless to say, the two never get along, which lends itself to some of the most scathing fire and brimstone Walsh ever delivered. Good Morning, Vietnam is designed for us to root for its protagonist, but I promise that you’ll love to hate Sgt. Major Dickerson.

A Few Good Men (1992)

Lt. Col. Matthew Markinson

Taking a minor step away from the brutish men Walsh often played, Lt. Col. Markinson is one of the few men suggested in the title of Rob Reiner’s excellent film. As the only apparent Marine on Guantanamo Bay with intelligence and a healthy conscience, Markinson feels compelled to speak out against his commanding officer’s recent misdeeds. But in order to do this, he must hide in plain sight. He must dress as a civilian, hiding in the back of cars, chain smoking cigarettes in crappy hotels. Markinson is a welcome breath of hope late in A Few Good Men. If only he’d held out a little longer.

Breakdown (1997)

Warren “Red” Barr

When we meet Red Barr, he has kindly pulled his 18-wheeler over to offer Jeff (Kurt Russell) and his wife, Amy (Kathleen Quinlan) a hand with their broken down Jeep. No one can get the car to work, so Red offers to drive them to the closest telephone. Jeff and Amy quickly resolve that Jeff will stay with the car while Amy goes with Red, shortly to return with help.

The second time we meet Red, Jeff and a police officer are frantically questioning him as to where Amy is. She never came back, and Red was the last person to see her. Red denies ever having met Jeff and Amy, and, much to Jeff’s horror, the officer allows Red to go on his way.

No need to divulged more but just know, as mentioned, Walsh is no novice to playing men of loose morals, and damn if Red Barr isn’t the meatiest among them. Close to being the best performance of Walsh’s career.

Pleasantville (1998)

Big Bob

Pleasantville is a simple town. Simple rules, simple people; everyone gets along because they know no other way. OrneryPleasantville Mayor, Big Bob, is one chief facilitator of such calm order, so when a few new kids come strolling into town and mixing things up, Big Bob ain’t at all pleased.

Pleasantville is a none-too-subtle allegory for American Civil Rights. On its most basic level, the film is about a bunch of white people letting color into their lives. It’s a charming movie full of heroes, but with every film of its kind, there needs to be at least one strong oppressor for balance. And who better to be in charge of moral oppression than a J.T. Walsh character? His final, heated moment as Big Bob is the highlight of the film. From black and white to Technicolor, all in one passionate rant.

The Negotiator (1998)

Inspector Niebaum

When I initially drafted the list of Walsh’s best performances, I didn’t consider his turn in The Negotiator as an option. Thankfully, I went back and rewatched this perfectly decent action thriller, and found myself utterly taken away by Walsh’s deceit.

In the film, Lt. Danny Roman (Samuel L. Jackson) is accused of killing his partner, so he holds a few people hostage, including Walsh’s Neibaum, to clear his name. Now, because this is a Samuel L. Jackson-playing-the-good-guy movie, we know Roman is innocent. Roman’s chief suspect in the crime is Internal Affairs Inspector Niebaum (or someone working for Niebaum) so, as a by-product of our innocence for Roman, we assume Niebaum is guilty. And the beauty of Walsh’s work here is that he doesn’t try to convince Roman (or the audience) otherwise. In short, we never know how to feel about Niebaum. He could be to blame, he could be a patsy, or he could just be having a very bad day. It was always hard to tell with Walsh.

The Best of the Best

Sling Blade (1996)

Creepy Inmate (Charles Bushman)

In Sling Blade’s opening scene, we watch as an ice cold inmate in a mental institution slowly drags his chair across the room, placing it next to Billy Bob Thornton. From there, J.T. Walsh sits down and delivers a monologue of sheer dread. He recalls a time when he picked up a woman off the street for sex, only to soon discover she was a he. Walsh delivers this haunting exchange in one single shot, and usually with a smile on his face.

Then the film does something very interesting. It cuts to two young female reporters, arriving at the institution to interview an inmate known as Karl. When the film cuts back to Walsh and Thornton, Walsh is now describing how and why he abducted and killed a woman some years ago. Cut back to the girls preparing for the interview. Back to Walsh, and so on.

This is classic movie juxtaposition: anyone who knows anything about movies knows that the two girls are there to interview either Thornton or Walsh’s character. They are there to speak to Karl, yet, if you haven’t seen the film, you actually have no idea which of the men Karl is. The warden of the institution slowly makes his way into the room where Walsh and Thornton are speaking. The warden instructs Karl that he has a visitor, and we wait in baited breath to see which man stands up. Thornton stands, and we let out a sigh of relief.

Just imagine if Karl was the other guy.

I met all of them before they were famous, when they were just called Spice. They came to my house. I knew the person who was doing the first draft of their movie. That person was later replaced, and somebody else wrote the movie, but they were hanging out because the movie was part of the original deal that they got with their record deal, so it was being developed before they even released a single.

I think I just made tea. Geri was the most vocal, but they were all just sweet. I later saw the ‘Wannabe’ CD single in Our Price and went, ‘Hang on — that’s those five girls!’ I’ve told Sporty, Baby and Ginger this story, but none of them remember, so it obviously didn’t mean as much to them as it did to me!

The Haunting of Miss Caroline Marsden (snippet)

‘So, Please Let Go, huh? Coming to theatres on March 10th; What an amazing piece of work this is!’

‘Oh yes, thank you John.’

‘Why don’t you tell us a little bit more about this film?’

As soon as that question is asked it feels as though everything fades, all sounds are muffled and her vision subsides, Caroline is only able to see her memories and her art.

‘That’s amazing. Now what’s the backstory to this film? How did you come to create it?’

Caroline smiled wider than she thought possible and let out a breath of satisfaction. This was her favourite question. She sat up and fixed her posture, wanting to look her absolute best.

‘Well it’s actually based on the book my partner wrote with the same name. I remember reading it the first time and being so moved by it, I just couldn’t stop thinking about it.’

‘Did you two write this together?’

‘Oh my partner Rose definitely helped me a lot, I mean it was based on their book, of course I’d look to her for guidance.’

‘That’s lovely, and where is Rose tonight?’

The loud applause was cut short by the TV switching off, leaving Caroline in a dark, cold, empty room. Tissues, wrappers, bottles, anything else that would’ve been cleaned off the floor in an instant stayed there in a depressing tableau, almost waiting to be put away, watching in judgement at Caroline’s newly found state. Caroline stared at the black screen, just able to see her now rejected reflection. Before she could think too hard on that, she pulled herself up from her chair and dragged her feet to the kitchen. She sighed, opening the fridge to find another drink, but she had already wasted them all. She hung her head in shame before turning to the clock on the microwave. ‘7:09AM’ it read, that familiar pit sat in her stomach realising she’s gone another night without sleep. How long has it been now? 75 hours? It was hard to keep track, Caroline had more important things to think about, like her premiere in two weeks, her fitting tomorrow, or well today. And the funeral on Friday. Before she could even stop herself she let out a quiet chuckle.

‘What kind of heartless bastard holds a funeral on a Friday? Like come on Jill, we all have better things to be doing, I’d rather spend my Friday dressed in a bikini on the beach with a drink in one hand and a woman in the other! Not standing around people I hate, mourning a person who shouldn’t even be having this so called fucking celebration!’ Caroline shouted to no one, throwing her half empty bottle at the wall opposite her, gasping as it shattered against the paint. She stared at the wet stain on the wall, trying to slow her breathing back to normal but failing completely. She left the glass pile on the floor, too distressed to even think about cleaning it. The Fate of the Furious (2017)

The Fast and Furious series has had its ups and downs but since the fifth entry, it’s been a steady climb. It all lead to the seventh entry and its goodbye to Paul Walker, who died tragically before shooting ended. This would’ve been the perfect time to end the series on a high note but woah-hoah! Did you see those box-office results? No way they were going to stop there. This brings us to The Fate of the Furious, which has many fan-pleasing moments but makes you wonder if the series has run out of ideas.

Cyber superterrorist Cipher (Charlize Theron) strongarms Dom Toretto (Vin Diesel) into working for her and betraying his “family”. Hobbs (Dwayne Johnson), Letty (Michelle Rodriguez), Roman (Tyrese Gibson), Ramsey (Nathalie Emmanuel) and Tej (Chris “Ludacris” Bridges) must team up with their old nemesis, Deckard Shaw (Jason Statham), to take them down.

Based on what we’ve seen before, you have certain expectations of Fast and Furious 8. Thankfully, all the checkboxes get ticked. We get a nice street race with Dom that’s so wild, it’ll have you jumping out of your seat in excitement. You get speeches about family, pretty much everyone who played a part in any of the previous films is back for at least a little bit, and they’re used quite well. Particularly fun is Kurt Russell as “Mr. Nobody”, the man who helps the crew by providing them the cars and tools they need to blow away their opponent and the audience's minds too. Nothing’s quite as crazy as the car racing through those three skyscrapers in #7 but wait till you see what kinda tricks Cipher has up her sleeve. It’s pretty sweet.

We've been told two more Fast & Furious movies will come after this one. If so, I hope the writers can turn the key on something more inspired. Much of what we see here, we've seen Dom and the family encounter before. Hobbs started out as an enemy but he teamed up with the heroes in #6. The family being betrayed by one of their own? Also in #6. I know it’ll sound weird to expect some brains from this series but when you find out why Dom is betraying everyone, it's so contrived you're pulled out of the movie. He couldn’t leave a note explaining to them what was happening? Really? To an extent you can buy Hobbs shrugging off rubber bullets - it’s nothing compared to that cement-shattering stomp Dom delivered in the previous movie - but when your characters do impossible things over and over AND they don’t act logically, it feels like the filmmakers are taking the audience for granted. By the time this movie’s over, everyone acts as if they’re best buds with Deckard Shaw. Did they just forget he was trying to kill them one movie ago, and that he assassinated their friend Hahn? This movie is paying attention to its continuity because it brings back characters and references previous actions… but hopes we’ll just shrug off other big plot points.

The climax is where it really gets nuts, all for the better. You’ve seen cars against a tank. Then, they took on a suped-up anti-aircraft drone in the middle of Los Angeles. What could possibly top that? How about a nuclear submarine? Woah. It’s as preposterous and awesome as it sounds. THen, we get even more. At the same time, Deckard and Owen Shaw (Luke Evans, playing another villain who gets chummy with the heroes) are assigned their own mission, one that delivers both thrills and comedy.

The Fate of the Furious delivers what you want to see. Dwayne Johnson gets a juicy stack of zingers, Vin Diesel talks about family, you get the hot ladies and the hotter cars. There’s action, comedy, drama and thrills. There are a couple of inventive action scenes and the chemistry between the actors is so good you’ll swallow just about anything they serve you. Too bad the plot lacks imagination.It makes he whole thing feels more like a cash-grab than a necessary continuation. Hopefully, this is a momentary dip. If what follows is great, then I’ll have no problem with it. Otherwise, we'll all be telling future fans to just stop at Fast & Furious 7. (On Blu-ray, April 26, 2019)

Casita, Isabela, and omg I have taken too many screenshots (aka I take this film again and go 'LOOK! LOOK AT THIS!!!!! :D')

So I am back on my nth rewatch of Encanto, and I am STILL picking up new details about the casita (which I always love). This time I'm looking at the towers of the casita.

I say towers; I'm talking about Bruno's tower, but also Isabela's and Pepa's rooms. Why am I counting theirs as well? Because they form three of the four corners of the house, and are also notably the only three rooms to be outwardly identifiable to their owners.

As you can see, three noticable rooms: Bruno's tower, Isabela's tower, and Pepa's room (notable by its weather vane).

Let's take a closer look at those back two.

SO, couple of things here, but let's start with Bruno's tower- it's covered in an abundance of ivy (I suspect either naturally, or not a concious choice of Isabela's). (the ivy is also a good indicator of the abandonment of Bruno's room, and the time that's passed etc etc etc). But under that ivy...

...there is a sundial, aka, a clock, which fits in with his whole see the future/hourglasses/time vibe. And speaking of hourglasses...

Look what's around the top of his tower! Lotsa little hourglass tiles/relief for the Madrigal with the future vision. I like it!

But he's not the only one who has symbols of their gift on their tower! Nope!

What's that we've got here? Raindrop patterns on Pepa's room? Yes please!

BUT!!! DID YOU NOTICE THE THUNDERCLOUDS AND LIGHTINING BOLTS AT THE TOP OF THE PATTERN TOO? BECAUSE I SURE AS HELL DID NOT WHEN I FIRST PICKED THIS UP AND THAT IS AWESOME.

(Also shoutout to whoever did the detailing on the wood close up here bc that is neat esp with peeling paint and all the patterning and texture and yay brain go happy brrrr)

Anyhoo,

This brings us onto Isabela's tower, and why I wanted to make this post in the first place:

Isabela's tower reflects her, and her arc.

At the start of the film, we see it pink as anything, covered (practically smothered) in flowers as Isabela is with her obligation to be perfect. I've seen a lot of people talk about how Isabela echos Abuela's dress colouring by being more purple/pink than the blue of her own side of the family, but most people don't notice that's exactly what's showing in her room. Take a closer look at the top of her tower and...

...it's blue. Under all those flowers, the mask she wears, it's always been the blue of her family. (also shoutout to the flower roundels on the wall there, and also the flower metal thing on the top as non-gift generated decorations of isabela's gift, completing the tower trio)

This blue part of her is barely visible until What else can I do? where it becomes more on display, and that part of her tower is also seen again at the end of the movie as the casita is rebuilt. A blank slate. But it's always been blue, right at the top, always there, just hidden, and that tugs at my heart no end.

(on a lighter note, I have to say there was no good screenshot for that last pic btw. I may have collapsed into a puddle of tears from laughing at the smear frames and omg Isabela WHY are you UPSIDE DOWN???!!)

If they do any further series/film etc, it'd be interesting to see what they do with further colour themes on her tower etc. And as always, I can't wait to see what other little details they have or will tuck away everywhere.

Also as a completely different note, I can't quite decide if that top bit of Isabela's tower stretches back further after the casita is rebuilt or not because no I am not looking for possible indications that Mirabel finally got a room of her own too and I know that Jared has said their are still spoilers/hints/secrets us fans haven't picked up on yet. It looks like it might, but there isn't enough detail to know 100 for certain.

You went out and found Chifuyu and Takemichi waiting for you.

"I HAVE FOUND THE SOLUTION" you yelled, and just when you looked up, you found Mitsuya that was staring at you and smiling softly.

"oh so you quickly found the solution" he replied before giving you a kiss on you nose.

"I'm proud of you darling, I hope you enjoyed this little game, now come with me and I'll take you to the final prize"

He took you by the hand, and led you to the roof of an abandoned building. From there you could see a beautiful sunset and there was a large tarp filled with snacks and drinks.

After you sat down, he pulled out a gift.

"here, this is for you, I did it so it won't be perfect. I really hope you like them"

They were beautiful white gloves, exactly your size.

"oh, they're so beautiful. Thank you so much Takashi" u said smiling at him.

"Everything for you" he told you before approaching you. So you stayed close to watch the beautiful sunset

CHIFUYU MATSUNO

It was such a busy day that you didn't even have a second to dedicate to yourself, even though it was your birthday.

Also, your boyfriend hadn't written or called you, maybe he just forgot about it you tought. As soon as you got home, you were very tired, but a delicious smell of pizza invaded your nostrils. You followed the perfume and in the kitchen you found Chifuyu that was cooking

He had a funny pink apron, and he was intending to get the pizza out of the oven.

"Y/N- uhm I didn't hear you" he yelled as soon as you saw. You started laughing, it was so funny seeing him with a face full of flour and ruffled hair

"It's a surprise. You g-go to rest, I'm almost done".

So you went for a quick shower and then changed. When you went out they were off, not all the lights no noise. Although you were a little scared, you headed for the room and as soon as you entered, the big light came on and a large table set up before you.

Shortly thereafter Chifuyu appeared and made his way towards you. He took you by the hand saying:

"here at your table, I hope you like it" and as a gentelman, he married the chair for you to sit on.

" It took me a while, but I'm pretty sure all your favorite foods are there," he said, stammering slightly and now his face was very red.

"It's all so good !! How long did it take you?"

"let's forget the time- the important thing is that you like it"

And you two continued to eat, it was all very good and all your favorite dishes were on that table<3

As soon as you finished, he ran to get a small box. "Well, since today is your birthday I got this for you. Close your eyes please."

You did what he said and felt warm hands moving your hair. To put you a necklace.

As soon as you opened your eyes you saw yourself in a mirror, it was such a beautiful necklace

"chifuyu, it's so pretty, thank you so much"

"Y/N, I'M SO HAPPY YOU LIKE" and he hugged you without thinking.

It seemed that all the exhaustion had been replaced by pure happiness.

" uh and it's not over yet, " he added. Soon after you were out, he let you get on his bike without telling you where you were going.

Until he stopped in front of the cinema, you entered and the hall was completely empty. It was literally just the two of you watching the movie

Overanalysis Hours: Analyzing The Perfect Killer Couple

Partners who slay together stay together, but what exactly makes a murderous union so twisted–and so compelling?

This analysis compares and parallels two perfect killer couples: Charlotte & Lizzie from The Perfection and Eve & Villanelle from Killing Eve.

At first glance it doesn’t appear that these two pieces of media have anything in common. Consider the simple synopsis for The Perfection and Killing Eve respectively:

As you’ll see, there is far more in common between these blood-splattered ladies than you might suppose. Most importantly both killer couples are united by the act of murder as an act of emancipation and an expression of love.

It’s impossible to reference parallels to Killing Eve from The Perfection without giving away its masterful narrative laced with several jaw-dropping twists. For people who haven’t seen it yet, I highly recommend that you watch it (without any foreknowledge) as soon as possible; just be warned that there are full spoilers ahead. Please also note that these spoilers deal with traumatic material that can be triggering.

While The Perfection and Killing Eve are best left experienced rather than simply retold, I will be focusing on key thematic areas and their respective plot points.

What Is Perfection?

As we head into spooky season, I hope this is an intriguing perspective on exactly what makes a perfect killer couple. By the time you finish reading, you’ll have five strong reasons to consider when evaluating Charlotte & Lizzie and Eve & Villanelle.

What Is Horror?

Over the past few months, my girlfriend has treated me to a mesmerizing array of classic and contemporary horror movies.

All of them are special in their own way. Experiencing each one has left an impression on me that ranges from disturbing to repulsive to downright revelatory. I was definitely scared. And the more movies we watched, the more I noticed repeated elements: a profound sense of helplessness, impossible situations (often induced by the supernatural or the occult), extreme violence (inflicted on victims or resorted to by victims) and its accompanying vast quantities of blood.

I’ve come to appreciate horror as a medium for telling stories about the gritty realities of life. What makes horror visceral is precisely that sometimes it explores situations any one of us could struggle with (or are struggling with, at some point). That rush of primal fear is a reminder that none of us is untouchable. In turn, we are able to better empathize in situations we may not personally be struggling with or initially might not be able to imagine ourselves in.

The following concise “official” definition for horror involves several related elements:

A horror film is one that seeks to elicit fear or disgust in its audience for entertainment purposes. Horror films additionally aim to evoke viewers' nightmares, revulsions and terror of the unknown or the macabre.

Beyond these genre descriptors and tropes, the fundamental concept that unites all horror narratives is survival.

Personally, the narratives that left the strongest impression on me were those that included a romantic element, specifically queer romance. Because of the strong bond or explicit love between characters, they would go to any lengths to survive–including murder.

Queer horror movies are diamonds in the rough. Far too many of us queer folks still experience homophobia as daily horrors-from society, from workplaces, even from our loved ones. Whether a horror movie has queer leads or queer relationships as the centerpiece, it’s vindicating and quite satisfying to see this content explored when all those painful struggles result in a subversive ending.

Since women and queer folks are traditionally victimized in horror movies, it makes our emancipation all the more thrilling and satisfying.

To that effect, both The Perfection and Killing Eve are actually love stories draped in the guise of horror.

This is precisely what results in their tremendous success. Both Killing Eve and The Perfection are survival narratives. Both explore the use of extreme violence, precisely murder, as a crucial survival mechanism and emancipatory tool. And both prominently feature queer romance.

The Rivalry

Charlotte and Lizzie are presented as rivals in much the same way Eve and Villanelle are shown to be on opposite sides of their conflict.

We’re introduced to an unsettled young woman named Charlotte. She’s been caring for her ailing mother who has finally died, which galvanizes Charlotte to re-introduce herself into the life of her musical rival Lizzie.

Thanks to a series of excellent “show, don’t tell” flashbacks, we learn that Charlotte and Lizzie have known each other since they were children attending Bachoff, a rigorous and prestigious music academy in Boston. When Charlotte’s mother fell ill, Charlotte dropped out which paved the way for Lizzie to become the prized pupil cellist and current international star.

Charlotte has her sights firmly fixed on Lizzie. So after a ten year gap, she reconnects with Anton, the head of Bachoff, and travels to Shanghai to join him, his wife Paloma, and teachers Geoffrey and Theis. They’re in the process of selecting a promising new student, Zhang Li.

In the meantime, Charlotte insinuates herself closer to Lizzie, starting with playing a captivating cello duet together. It’s as much a competition between them as it is a breathtaking insight into their bond.

Eve and Villanelle start off as professional rivals too. They operate within the same world of international intelligence agencies and criminal syndicates. Eve is recruited by spymaster Carolyn Martens for an off-the-record operation to track down a mysterious international assassin working for The Twelve.

The division between these two women is clear: Eve is an intelligence officer with MI6 and Villanelle is the assassin in question. Because of the brutal efficiency and flagrancy of her kills, and the fact that she remains at large, Villanelle is simply the best of the best. In fact, we learn in Season 2 that her lethal reputation earns her the title of The Demon With No Face.

In turn, Villanelle’s skill forces Eve to shake off her boredom and assemble a team to track down this dangerous threat. We’re shown that Eve is the best at what she does too: she’s an expert at profiling female serial killers, at gathering information and then making key connections that drive the operation forward, and at taking calculated risks in her pursuit of VIllanelle.

These two killer couples drive each other to be at the top of their game. There’s a crackling energy to their competitiveness. By being positioned as rivals from the outset, the magnetic pull these women feel towards each other necessarily means they know more about each other than anyone else.

It is precisely this rivalry that is the first reason why Charlotte & Lizzie and Eve & Villanelle are the perfect killer couple.

And under these competitive circumstances, these women are perfectly primed for their shared obsession.

The Obsession

The second reason why Charlotte & Lizzie and Eve & Villanelle are the perfect killer couple is because their shared obsession eventually unites them.

Early on in Season 1 of Killing Eve, we learn that Eve has already been obsessed with the mysterious assassin for quite some time. To the point that she’s compiled an entire file on the assassin, who she believes is a woman, as a sort of passion project.

Carolyn is so impressed by Eve’s skill and dedication that she immediately recruits her.

Similarly, when Villanelle learns that Eve is leading an entire sleeper cell department within MI6 to hunt her down, she becomes obsessed with Eve. To the point where she compromises her assassination assignments to stalk her and goes out of her way to kill Eve’s best friend Bill. This murder irrevocably intertwines them.

Mutual obsession is established within the first ten minutes of The Perfection. Most of it is brilliantly conveyed to the audience through visual storytelling. Thanks to the compelling acting, we’re prompted to sense the pulsing sinister undercurrents of Charlotte’s thought process, to infer the dark depths of her obsession, and to wonder how ten years worth of feeling replaced, jealous, and lonely has twisted Charlotte’s perception.

During the evening gala Charlotte and Lizzie are able to steal a few precious moments away from the bustling crowd. At this point, their electrifying chemistry and obsession is affirmed.

Obsession is all consuming by definition. Yet rather than leaving room for nothing else in their particular relationships, obsession is all at once transmuted into love while also empowering Charlotte & Lizzie and Eve & Villanelle to confront whoever has wronged them–including each other.

The Damage

It’s understandable for Eve to be obsessed with Villanelle, especially after she ruthlessly kills Bill. Along these same lines, it’s understandable for Charlotte to be obsessed with Lizzie, given their shared history and that she’s apparently living the life Charlotte could have had.

With the elements of rivalry and obsession in place, the third reason why Charlotte & Lizzie and Eve & Villanelle are the perfect killer couple is because of the damage they do to each other, as well as to their antagonists.

Killing Eve and The Perfection make no secret that their protagonists are damaged characters. It’s part of what makes them so relatable, even endearing. It’s also what allows them to cause damage…as well as have it be completely justified. The build up to this violence they inflict is preluded by glimpses into their disturbed mental state.

Both killer couples are intimately familiar with the painful fact that one of the worst types of damage is betrayal of trust.

What makes it that much worse is precisely the carefully established context of safety and reliance beforehand.

After their impromptu seductive cello duet, Charlotte and Lizzie go clubbing then return to Lizzie’s hotel room to have sex. It’s important to note that the tone of this entire sequence is intimate, tender, sensual, fevered, joyful, and a free fall into pure euphoria.

The next morning, Charlotte gives Lizzie some ibuprofen to take care of her hangover. They excitedly prepare for a sightseeing tour of rural China. Lizzie eats at a food stall before they board the bus and adorably dozes against Charlotte, who is dreamily listening to music.

Everything seems like a cute date until Lizzie progressively gets ill on the bus.

Lizzie’s condition worsens to the point that she spirals into sheer panic and throws up slimy bugs. She takes more ibuprofen from Charlotte while a bewildered Charlotte tries to get help from the passengers and bus driver. The horror of this situation is emphasized by the fact that Charlotte and Lizzie don’t speak Chinese; Lizzie is visibly getting worse with every passing moment; and everyone wants them kicked off the bus.

The unsympathetic bus driver leaves Lizzie and Charlotte stranded in the Chinese countryside. At this point I was queasily convinced The Perfection was a survival horror movie. Especially when a totally paranoid Lizzie sees bugs crawling inside her arm and eventually bursting out of her skin before Charlotte offers her a meat cleaver, and Lizzie hacks off her infected right hand.

In the first of several shocking plot twists in The Perfection, it is revealed that Charlotte actually drugged Lizzie with medication prescribed to Charlotte's late mother (which causes hallucinations), stole the meat cleaver from the food stall, and manipulated Lizzie into chopping off her own hand.

Apparently, Charlotte’s twisted obsession has resulted in her rival successfully removing her musical skill and rendering her talent (and value to Bachoff academy) completely worthless. The damage to Lizzie is devastating.

The damage Eve inflicts on Villanelle in the Season 1 finale of Killing Eve is equally devastating.

A trembling sense of peace and trust is gradually built up between Eve and Villanelle as they have a heart to heart, then lay on the bed side by side. Everything is shattered the moment Eve stabs Villanelle.

This damage is paralleled in the Season 2 finale when Villanelle lashes out at Eve for rejecting her love and offer to elope to Alaska.

The scars Charlotte & Lizzie and Eve & Villanelle leave on each other are simultaneously psychological and physical. Such acts of violence inevitably form a trauma bond between these couples.

More than that though, it’s an unshakable (albeit twisted) fact that without this violence, none of these characters would be forced to confront the reality of their situation and get to a better place in their relationships.

Of course, certain things happened to Charlotte & Lizzie and Eve & Villanelle to make them choose violence as an instrument of emancipation.

For Lizzie in particular, her reaction to Charlotte’s betrayal is nothing short of wrathful.

Three weeks after Lizzie chopped her hand off, Anton and Paloma are giving Zhang Lee a tour of Bachoff and the "Chapel," an acoustically perfect room where the academy's best students perform.

Lizzie unexpectedly returns that night. She explains to Anton and Paloma that a passerby found her in the Chinese countryside with a makeshift tourniquet that kept her alive. She blames jealous Charlotte for the incident and is further infuriated when, the next day, Anton coldly informs her that she must leave the academy.

Lizzie travels to Charlotte’s home. She breaks in and overpowers Charlotte with a taser before returning to Bachoff with Charlotte bound in the trunk of her car. When she tries to escape, Anton subdues and brings her to the Chapel, where she is to perform for him, Paloma, Lizzie, the other teachers Theis and Geoffrey, and a blissfully ignorant Zhang Li.

Anton commands Charlotte to play a complicated piece without any mistakes. If she’s able to do that, she will be free to leave. If she makes just one single mistake, Zhang Li will "pay the price”.

No pressure!

Charlotte is visibly distraught. She pleads and fights against her restraints, but to no avail. She succumbs to playing the cello.

And she makes mistake after mistake.

After the performance Anton, Paloma, and Zhang Li leave the Chapel. This gives Lizzie the space to exact her atrocious revenge: Theis and Geoffrey bind Charlotte’s arms, preparing to gang rape her. In turn, Lizzie herself threatens to rape Charlotte with her hand stump as revenge.

This second shocking twist in The Perfection left me reeling. I couldn’t bear to look at the screen but I also couldn’t tear my gaze away. My hands were sweaty and shaking, I felt waves of shock rippling through me. I also felt revulsion, pity, and adrenaline.

But I soon found that things were not exactly as they appeared to be.

The devastating damage Charlotte & Lizzie and Eve & Villanelle inflict on each other is eclipsed by their profound motive.

The Motive

Why do these two killer couples cause so much damage?

Simply put, Killing Eve and The Perfection share the same underlying narrative about emancipation. The end goal is firmly fixed on freedom. Charlotte & Lizzie and Eve & Villanelle obviously need to survive in order to be truly free. But how can they ever get there if they’re not pushed beyond their comfort zones?

Eve is trapped in a dull marriage and her current role at work bores her. Villanelle murdering Bill is the catalyst for Eve to propel her life forward. She embraces her propensity for violence and darkest impulses because she knows Villanelle will accept her unconditionally.

Similarly, Villanelle is working for The Twelve. It seems to be a job that fulfills her, on top of The Twelve providing her with a lavish lifestyle. But everything comes at a price; Villanelle is entirely expandable to The Twelve and Hélène just as much as Eve is to Carolyn at MI6.

As Villanelle gets to know Eve, she opens herself up to an entire emotional spectrum (including love), learns how to trust, to put someone else before herself, and finds that killing is no longer the biggest thrill in her life. Without Eve’s influence, Villanelle never would have walked away from The Twelve.

Bachoff academy functions much like The Twelve: Anton recruits vulnerable (and underage) women and exploits their tremendous skill, talent, and excitement. When they are no longer of any use, he discards them.

Charlotte sees that Lizzie won’t give up music so she makes sure she can never play again. It is only because Charlotte went to this vicious extreme that Lizzie admits she’s able to finally break free of Anfon’s brainwashing. This breakthrough is especially important in The Perfection due to the nature of Anton’s abuse.

Anton’s earlier threat of Zhang Lee paying “the price” if Charlotte makes a mistake during her performance refers to the sexual abuse he inflected on Charlotte when she was at Bachoff.

Only Anton’s “special students” have an eighth-note tattoo, which is a symbol symbol for those indoctrinated into an elite group of students whom Anton and everyone else at Bachoff sexually abuse as part of a sex cult.

Charlotte was raped and tortured for years by Anton for failing to achieve musical "Perfection.” So as soon as Charlotte saw Lizzie’s tattoo in the New York Times magazine article, she knew the horrific abuse Lizzie had experienced and wanted to save her from going through more.

It is clear that Eve & Villanelle and Charlotte & Lizzie will go to all lengths to fight for, protect, and be with their respective partners. When faced with the horrors of their situation, they rely on each other.

Ultimately Killing Eve and The Perfection both deal with betrayal of trust and abuse from authority figures. Hence, the fourth reason why Charlotte & Lizzie and Eve & Villanelle are the perfect killer couple is because their motive is to save each other.

The betrayal and abuse these characters endure taps into our primal and universal fears: of just not being good enough; of being expendable and easily replaceable; of being reduced to One Thing You Do Well and the consequent loss of identity when you’re simply unable to do it anymore. Of putting your trust in the wrong people, only to continually be exploited, manipulated, and let down.

Eve and Villanelle are working in environments where the very fact that they are women unfortunately makes them targets for abuse; the same is true for Charlotte and Lizzie. It speaks volumes that they choose to stand up for each other at all costs.

Moreover, the severity of the damage done to them is emphasized by the fact that only a duet of (justifiable) murder can cleanse the horrific trauma.

The Love

The final reason Charlotte & Lizzie and Eve and Villanelle are a perfect killer couple is because of their love.

Ultimately, murder emancipates them and is committed as an act of love. In her review of The Perfection, Tori Preston perfectly encapsulates the essence of the movie, which also applies just as readily to Killing Eve:

This is an erotic thriller. It’s a love story, too. It’s a story about shared trauma, abuse, catharsis, and paths to breaking free. It’s a story about zealotry. About saving yourself, and saving others. It’s a story about gaslighting. And yes, it is a story about revenge — but it is not a story about revenge for revenge’s sake. And that is the movie’s saving grace: even as it runs you through a gamut of tropes you think you know, it shifts the perspective and uses them to tell a story that you don’t see coming.

Only Charlotte & Lizzie and Eve & Villanelle know exactly what they’re going through. There is a level of understanding there, a harrowing kind of intimacy, that makes it possible for them to be a couple. Which is precisely why these women are motivated to kill for each other.

Returning to the moment in The Perfection when Lizzie was apparently about to exact her revenge on Charlotte, the third and most jaw-dropping plot twist finally reveals the truth:

Charlotte & Lizzie conspired against Anton and everyone at Bachoff. The night Lizzie broke into Charlotte’s home and admitted she was right, they came up with a plan for revenge.

Thanks to careful setup, Theis and Geoffrey keel over because their drinks are poisoned. Lizzie frees Charlotte, and together they go upstairs.

Anton’s evening is disrupted when a drugged and stabbed Paloma stumbles into his study and dies in agony from her wounds. Anton finds himself confronted by Charlotte and Lizzie.

They attack him, but he manages to wrest the knife from Charlotte, sadly mutilating her arm before Lizzie knocks him unconscious.

The dark heart of the matter is Charlotte & Lizzie and Eve & Villanelle love each other so much that they would kill for each other’s safety.

What Is Perfection?

Perfection is not the absence of errors.

Perfection is the harmony of interrelated elements that form an undeniable and inseparable whole.

Some time later, we see that Charlotte and Lizzie have hacked away at Anton: his mouth and eyes are sewn shut and his limbs are amputated. He is kept alive by an IV drip and forced to listen as Charlotte and Lizzie perform for him in the Chapel.

They literally play as one, each compensating for the other's missing hand.

Eve and Villanelle come together for a sweet, tender and serene moment during a waltz. Although the situation is dangerous, the rest of the world falls away as they sway in harmony as one.

Killing Eve and The Perfection both explore what happens when abused women choose violence as a means to emancipate themselves. The killer couples of Charlotte & Lizzie and Eve & Villanelle are perfect precisely because they kill to save each other. That’s a powerful, striking declaration of love.

So whenever my girlfriend and I watch horror movies, I keep in mind that the ones which become our favourites are usually those where the ultimate reward for survival is love.

After all, to be deeply scared is to face the reality of what you stand to lose.

To be horrified is to face the creeping sense of dread you’re running out of options to preserve all that you stand to lose.

To be brave is knowing you’re not alone if facing your horrors.

To love and be loved within the context of horror means to consistently make choices that ensure the relationship survives. It means choosing, affirming, and expressing, over and over:

I love you.

No matter what happens. No matter what happened in your past. No matter what horrors we presently face.

I love you.

We’re going to survive this, together. And just keep on loving each other.

I promise.
