Mdzs mermaid au part 13
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Aand that's a wrap! Again, a huuuge thank you for everyone who's interacted with this au-thingy-turned-comic, from likes to all the kind comments and tags, you are what made me want to add on and on to this thing❣️ And for old times' sake (as if I didn't start this like a month ago but it feels much longer) there's some rambles (and a surprise!) under the cut!
part 1 | prev part
Tumblr media
I gotta say I will miss drawing them and we'll see if any of the human realm drama ever gets solved. You gotta make up your own ending for that, unless I get back into it, no promises tho. ;) Mostly I feel bad for this au's Xichen,🙈poor guy. Though of course Wangji wouldn't just fuck off forever without telling him where he is, and maybe seeing his own little brother in this form will force him to reconsider his biases. For now wangxian are living their best life with A-Yuan and the rest of the Wens somewhere deep in the ocean.

Nie Huaisang, Lan Xichen, Jin Guangyao, and Nie Mingjue all reincarnate together into PIDW, and become disciples around the same time as Luo Binghe.
The drama of this is of course enhanced by the facts that NMJ & JGY died "early," but NHS & LXC lived to the end of their natural lives as cultivators, and so some of their perspectives and opinions on events have naturally changed with age. (tfw the passage of time renders you unfamiliar to your once-loved ones)
Eventually they talk about their feelings and reconcile and such, and this ends up derailing the plot of PIDW severely as the rest of the PIDW characters confusedly observe quite possibly the weirdest disciples Cang Qiong's ever seen
NMJ on Bai Zhan, with no clue what's going on because he died first and NHS & LXC haven't told him anything
NHS on An Ding, thoroughly enjoying what's pretty much a vacation to him at this point and possibly running an interpeak illicit goods market (definitely not to distract himself from any of the emotions having NMJ & JGY alive and nearby would be causing him, Everything Is Fine) I haven't decided if he'd get involved with the whole og!SQH and MBJ situation tho
LXC on Qiong Ding, because I feel like he'd see himself in Yue Qingyuan and lowkey hate him for it and I think that could be interesting
JGY on Qing Jing, because he's the objectively the funniest/most interesting character to throw into the mess that is SJ and LBH. The way I imagine it, he's doing the most direct derailing of the plot, because he mostly accidentally gets right in the middle of the thing that is going on between those two
I feel like as I wrote this it became more serious than I originally intended so just know that I'm mentally picturing this like a fic that's interspersed with outsider POV of the 4 of them being completely deranged about eachother
(Also I'd feel bad taking away LXC's brother so LWJ and WWX + friends are busy doing hot girl shit being rogue cultivators. I think WWX should be a half demon so he gets to keep the cultivation and steal some of LBH's protagonist energy. If this was a fic then the rest of the Untamed gang would be perfect to use for side characters during off-peak missions)
*grabs popcorn and sits down to hear more*
Nie Huaisang is having too much fun waiting the two idiots called his shizun and shizun's poorly kept secret of a boyfriend go flailing around on these terribly unromantic dates BUT THE TWO WERE TRYING SO HARD that it was cute. He wonders if he should do something to help the poor idiots out... Should he?
Maybe he should...
(Watch Shang Qinghua and Mobei Jun suddenly have a number of sex pollen accidents over the next few months....)
Lan Xichen would be an old man and a good voice of reason for Yue Qingyuan. Although he's head disciple and a very good one at that (if only because his Big Brother instincts can't be held back and he MUST interfere to help prevent history repeating once more), Lan Xichen has made it very clear that he would never accept becoming sect leader.
Also don't forget Liu Mingyan in the background writing about a 4 person sex orgy. At least, that's her personal theory for why there's so much UNRESOLVED TENSION between these four sus male disciples. And also, because it's fun.
It's even funner when you consider that Nie Mingjue is out of the loop of Cang Qiong stuff even on Bai Zhan because he tags along on so many of Liu Qingge's missions that he's probably spending like 8 months of the year outside of the sect.
(Nie Huaisang gets "assigned" to missions that happen to take place near Nie Mingjue's hunts.)
Meng Yao is Meng Yao and he still craves the approval of Male Authority Figures That Could be his dad. Also Meng Yao still likes to climb up the social hierarchy and power. AKA Luo Binghe growing mushrooms in the corner at seeing ANOTHER QING JING disciple THE SAME AGE AS HIM being given SO MUCH ATTENTION AND APPROVAL by shizun.
Luo Binghe develops a complex over Meng Yao of course.
(Shen Jiu approves of Meng Yao because he understands these characters very well and know how to manipulate (cough kill or injury them physically or mentally) them easily. Plus Meng Yao is actually competent.)
[More in #Nie Huaisang Lan Xichen Meng Yao and Nie Mingjue reincarnate into PIDW and are Cang Qiong disciples at the same time as Luo Binghe is AU

Yu Bin and Ji Li were considered for each other's roles at one point, so there's an AU somewhere where Yu Bin is having fake crying fits and fainting and everyone is terrified of the pocket sized ghost general and poor Ji Li has to try to drag WZC's 6 foot frame out of lotus pier
CRYING oh my god oh no
i have to say tho, yu bin would be hilarious when it comes to the nhs melodramatics, however i'm also thinking about the moment where nhs collapses his entire body weight onto lan xichen in the middle of jinlintai while wailing and i fear that if it was yu bin he would just crush liu haikuan to the floor in that scenario

Favorite moments from MDZS manhua chapter 252:
(covers novel chaps 108-109, adapted in audio drama S3Ep16, donghua ep 34 & The Untamed ep 50)
XiYao officially over 😢
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Always makes my heart ache a little how sad and angry Jin Guangyao is during these scenes. I will always believe his feelings towards Big Bro Xichen was genuine so he was truly hurting here.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The fact that he pushed Big Bro out of the way to save him only reiterates to me how true his affections for Big Bro is. It's not as clear in the manhua here but on the book he actually pushed him away cuz DaGe was about to attack Big Bro Xichen. I also liked how in CQL and the donghua they showed the reason JGY saved Big Bro at the last minute was because he was resigned to die together with him. 😢
Tumblr media
Bye Jiggy, have fun with DaGe in the afterlife! (what're the chances they're like angry ppping all the time there? 😁)
Tumblr media
Wei Ying beckoning to Lan Zhan like that was just adorable!
Tumblr media
Must they be so goddamn CUTE...
Tumblr media
... especially in front of this poor heartbroken man??? WangXian gives no fucks. 😂
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Welp, the gig is up for Nie Huaisang. Finally everyone's starting to figure shit out. His Oscar is still deserved tho.

hi kiri I intend to make you type so many words. for our ask game I’m starting with xicheng because I have my share of opinions
ask me about a ship and I'll give my opinions + classify them as does / doesn't make sense, does / doesn't compel me oh boy. my askbox has never been this full you guys…! really fun all of you tho. some I’ve got thoughts on some I haven’t really considered etc. and very impressively: no dupes!
also. words have been written. to the point that I’m putting this under a readmore lmao. up top apology for the incoherence i do just ramble
sooo xicheng. until recently I did not know the ao3 stats for this ship were. that big? don't feel like dangling the classification like bait so I'll start by saying: doesn’t make sense, doesn't compel me. now I will take way too many words to explain exactly why I feel that way!
as a person I am first and foremost a jiang cheng x happiness shipper. kind of. I never want it to be easy for him. because I’m kind of a bastard. so I've actually read a bit of fic with jc in a few different ships, some of which have been xicheng. and there's like, a few of those fics that have portrayed as aspect of jiang cheng like... so sensitively and in a way that made me Feel Things. so I'll always love them for that. my issue is that I just feel like... in the case of these, lan xichen could often be anyone for me. i read mdzs like... pre-untamed, and lan xichen's like... idk. I liked his role in the story but he didn't super compel me? so some of my issues with xicheng stem from the fact that I've simply never thought about lan xichen that much, and I'm not really invested in exploring his character. I think they could have some compelling things because they have a variety of things on their ends that don't get fully resolved, by pure virtue of 1) existing in mdzs 2) being side characters. also if jiang cheng's visiting gusu lan it puts him in proximity of wei wuxian which does promise for interesting interactions. what sours me on xicheng is... like I've said, I think some fics can make it work enough for me. but I feel like a large motivator of the fic is just... "oh look, wei wuxian's got a brother, and so does lan wangji! let's ship them!" even though they're totally different people? and as a consequence these two tend to get sanded down into often reductive portrayals. lot of pair the spares energy.
also kind of on the subject... I think I just don't really like.... ships with jiang cheng? in general? well my tolerance actually varies but I think especially when they take place post-canon (which the xicheng I've read often does) it doesn't sit right with me. I think it’s because jiang cheng’s not in… dire straits post-canon, but he’s not really happy. like he got told about the golden core thing but he’s unable to say the thing back about why he ran off like that in the first place. and I don’t like post-canon ships where it’s like. oh… jiang cheng, you poor thing. you shall be fixed by love. so I think I’m softer on ships that deal with things that happen before everything goes to shit for this reason. like I’ve not watched a lot of the show, but him and wen qing could be fun especially since that makes the golden core thing way more fucked up. with sangcheng they were like. friends in canon and stuff and then it seems they’ve gotten more distant. with zhancheng I mean like. there’s that tension and those years where wei wuxian wasn’t around and they were carrying their separate griefs. but with xicheng I feel like they don’t have anything super interesting in canon, which makes their outsized popularity a bit startling to me.
this is like. deeply personal and is kind of petty but. as someone who has wandered into the jiang cheng tags a couple times. man. people really hate that guy. and also hate people who like him. at least the couple times I looked there was just a lot of stuff arguing about like. oh jiang cheng sucks actually he’s the worst and all his fans are delusional for liking him and they’re ignoring his Crimes. he’s a uniquely selfish character who is unable to express or feel love. I’m not saying this is everyone, it’s just… the vibe I got from quite a few posts. this was also years ago. maybe things are calmer. I’m definitely biased because jiang cheng has always been my favorite character, so of course I love him. but this isn’t a defense post of him. either you like him or you don’t. just don’t bother me. anyways, the thing about “love” has always stuck with me, because I think that jiang cheng so obviously expresses love. like… the entire way he feels about wei wuxian! that’s his brother! idk. if you can’t see that you’ve lost me. now do I think jiang cheng communicates any of his feelings well ever No.
but about the love thing. when I read romantic fics involving jiang cheng post-canon, intentionally or not, a lot of what I read had this angle of almost like… look how capable of love jiang cheng is. and I’m like. well jiang cheng already loves people. it may not have gone perfectly or been so beautiful but that doesn’t make it non-existent. if he loves selfishly or awkwardly or without communicating it, it doesn’t mean that the love doesn’t exist. I think I’m stumbling into incoherence here… but my favorite headcanon for jiang cheng is probably one where he’s aromantic and asexual, because to me it affirms this feeling of like. romantic love is not some kind of absolution. and the “love” that he feels isn’t any lesser than whatever romance is going around. many different ways to be aroace ofc but this is how I see it for him. a lot of this is probably also influenced by the fact that I’m writing a fic with aroace jiang cheng at this present moment haha. as you might imagine, having this headcanon means that I tend to be neutral on most jiang cheng ships! I think to really grab me you’d have to make it interesting on the other end, so the character’s not just a sounding board for jiang cheng’s issues and vice versa, which sort of sums up my problems with xicheng. even the xicheng fics I read and liked were like… great, I’m glad you’re treating these two like real characters and not wangxian to the left. however a lot of this fic is just like. wow jiang cheng / lan xichen you’ve had it hard. Here’s a character who will comfort you and support you. and that’s nice in a way, but not compelling as a ship, yknow? so that’s the sum up of my thoughts. I’m on the scale of neutral-dislike, but if there’s a particularly good portrayal of jiang cheng I’d probably read it.

guardian ep4
i just started new meds and am overcome with the need to be horizontal at all times so we're gonna watch some more guardiannnn @oneiro-nautical please lmk if the tagging gets annoying tho lol
and right away shen wei, who has clearly never done anything wrong in his life, is getting arrested. look at him. that man's never even rolled through a stop sign
'your confidence and composure reminds me of someone i know' do lao chu and shen wei have a past? i'm interested now
so is this face remover like. flaying these women? is it magic? how gory is this about to get? (edit: okay it's fine)
lmao see i thought shen wei was just really gentle and solemn, like a lan xichen type of person, but here he is bothering chief zhao smirking up a storm. maybe he's truly just a little shit. love him
look at them walking like they're attached at the hip!
Tumblr media
look how much space this man is choosing to ignore in favor of letting his arm brush against zhao yunlan's sometimes. shen wei baby i see you
i like how the running gag so far has been situation occurs, shen wei is somehow involved, situation escalates to levels that would injure or kill a human being, shen wei is neither injured nor killed, and zhao yunlan arrives just in time to say are you okay? and shen wei just says im fine :) and you can hear chief zhao go HUH. in his head. progressively louder each time
idk if there is an equivalent of a bedside manner for interviewing suspects but zhao yunlan's is........ not great lol
poor guo changcheng. ma'am do you realize you're flirting with a whole baby
OHHHH so he's stealing the faces and she's putting them on! i see
zhu hong is gorgeous!!!
'don't you know you could get TETANUS' ohhh zhao yunlan your tough act isn't fooling nobody!! you care about him!!!!
awww ik xiao guo is a nepo baby but i'm glad he's starting to find his place on the team (edit: team quit bullying him dear god)
see this is so interesting. before watching this i thought zhao yunlan was a kind of wwx character, really lighthearted, fiercely chaotic good, and he's both those things but he's got an edge on him too. he's not afraid to be mean for the sake of efficiency. whereas i thought shen wei was very lwj, very solemn and hard to read, but he's so damn gentle and he's got such speaking eyes he really reminds me of lan xichen. so far at least
awww chu shuzhi shielded damn cat from the blast. he's just a big ol teddy bear isn't he
i love dramatic conversations held in normal tones of voice between two people facing away from each other standing at least eight feet apart in the great outdoors
ancient!yunlan NAMED HIM??? and (if i've been spoiled correctly) shen wei kept that name for ten thousand years waiting to see him again? just in case that name sparked even the ghost of a memory of their connection? STOP
AUGH
at least this episode didn't bring me perilously close to tears. though i did feel bad for that kid with the dead girlfriend and the revenge molotov. he was annoying but he had a good heart i think. it's sleepy time for me now

MDZS AU | Rumor says...
Even in a world full of cultivation, coincidence was likely still the most powerful type of magic. Now, add coincidence with a world full of people that add love and gossip - that’s how you get the following result, apparently.
JC was gone from his sect rather often. At times for JL, at others just for a change of scenery. The sect was his, but it shouldn’t run too dependent on him. He’d also go out at night to keep an eye on the woods and so forth around his sect.
Sometimes gone for the night, other times gone for a few days.. One time, as he returns, he overhears the mutters of salespeople - those that aren’t part of his sect, but come by to sell goods often enough.
“I heard he’s having a secret affair with Lan Xichen...”
He proceeds to ask one of his disciples, the poor soul, what the ruckus was about & the rundown of the tale is that they seemingly always disappear and reappear at around the same times.
The peculiar thing is tho.. that none of those times they allegedly did who-knows-what did they do that, let alone meet.
JC then makes it his mission to find out what LXC, the prim & proper Jade, is up to.
Note: this could be any chars, I just involved names for the sake of a clearer picture. it could also go any way from there, is it a cute secret? a sad one? do they just do the same stuff & bond as buddies or.. do they actually start that secret affair?

Headcannon idea: Lan Wangji and Wei Wuxian fight for Lan Sizhui's place as sect leader of the Lan sect as many reject and disagree because of his "Wen" background.
Ooo. Nice idea! Sorry it took me a while to really sort on how I thought this would play out, I hope you enjoy!
~~
HC for Lan Sizhui becoming Sect Leader
When Lan Xichen enters seclusion after the events of Jin Guangyao’s betrayal, there’s talk among the Lans. (That’s when you know it’s serious, as gossip is Forbidden in the Cloud Recesses.)
Lan Zhan and Wei Ying gold out hope that he’ll be able to overcome this new obstacle in his life, but as time wears on, it seems less and less likely.
After several years, Lan Xichen officially announces that, after much thought and meditation, he’s stepping down as Sect Leader and without any children of his own, he asks Wangji to take his place. His little brother has always been able to see what he couldn’t, weather it be Wei Ying’s good heart or Meng Yao’s deceitful one. He feels it best that a man with such perceptions and strong morals lead their sect back from his “disgrace”.
While that’s all well and good, the elders are... well, old minded. Many of them were present to watch as the Wens burned their home to the ground and killed the last Sect Leader. And as a result, they’d rather spit blood and Qi deviate than see one of that bloodline take up a leadership position.
In the end though, they cannot stop it. Wei Wuxian is the husband of their new leader, bound by both Gusu laws and the heavens, and Lan Sizhui has been counted among their numbers for more years of his life than not. It doesn’t help that several other sects voice their good opinion on the young man.
They absolutely cannot refute it then even Jiang Wanyin, the fearsome Sandu ShengShou, who’s whole sect was razed down to the last soul, adamantly declares that Sizhui is a good choice, and that he’d be disappointed if the Lans would discriminate against one of their own simple because of a time the boy in question can hardly remember. (If he makes this declaration while thinking of how much better Lotus Pier was when Wei Wuxian was by his side, well, they don’t need to know that.)
His fathers leave the final desicion to him, and the boy gracefully accepts with a promise to do his best.
It’s still several years before the esteemed Hanguang-Jun steps down and his son assumes the responsibility of handling the Sect, but when he does, the young Sect Leader leads with grace and poise.
Jin Ling is beyond ecstatic to finally have another Sect Leader his age to complain to about the stuffiness and posturing of Sect meetings.

man i bet su minshan had a whole multi-page long monologue planned in which he drug lan xichen to hell and back over the fact that he was still trying to make things work with nie mingjue, and encouraging jin guangyao to try too, after the stairs incident. like i bet he sat up at night just gnashing his teeth and muttering to himself about how he would never let anyone treat his sworn brother like that and live unmarked to tell about it! he cursed jin zixun for much less despite the permanent consequences to his own self but noooOOOOOOooooo the perfect flawless fIrSt JaDe Of LaN thinks it’s perfectly fine for people to treat Lianfang-zun like that and the worst part is that Lianfang-zun doesn’t even MIND?!?! Seriously what the fuck.
And he never got to deliver it

Hello Plan, hope you are having a lovely day 😊
I will be kind today and won't send you any screenshots etc. because there is no need to taint anyone's eyes with this idiocity.
We have reached the point where canon wangxian interactions are being swapped with jaing cheng/literally anyone that breathes in fanart (probably in fanfics too, but I rarely read them so I wouldn't know). I just saw a fanart of the archery competition scene but instead of wangxian it's jiang cheng (derogatory) taking off poor lan xichen's headband.
And the caption under the drawing went something like "Am I the only one that thinks this scene would have suited them better 😍"
Yes. You are the only one. (Probably not, but I don't want to know that.)
I guess with the recent influx of zhancheng 🤢 shippers I have to be thankful they at least didn't involve lan wangji. Rip to zewu-jun tho, he didn't deserve this shit.
Thank you hope you're having a lovely day as well!
See.. This is why even the art isn't safe anymore...
Poor LXC, hasn't he been through enough </3? The only acceptable ships for jc are ChengXun and BenCheng 😗

seeing as people actually paid attention to my book 2 mdzs rant, let’s do one more~~
book 3 of mdzs review😋
lotus pier arc???? i hate madam yu but her character art is also like kinda hot 🥵 but girl literally abuses her ward verbally and THEN WHIPS HIM?? WITH A SPIRITUAL WEAPON?? LIKE WTF my poor baby wwx 😭
the whole wen indoctrination part like omg jin zixuan is actually kind of cool??? and then lan zhan being emo bc CLOUD RECESSES BURNT DOWN 😭 OMG i felt so bad, and the way he just closed himself off despite the pain in his leg until wwx comes along and annoys it out of him <3 also side note loved the part where wei ying quotes wen mao and totally destroys wen chao like 🧎‍♀️🧎‍♀️🧎‍♀️
fighting the xuanwu of slaughter and having a little tension between my boys 🤌🤌 AND LWJ LET HIM SLEEP ON HIS LAP?!?!😫😫😫 i can’t fr they’re too cute 🥰 and also like the way they both credited killing it to each other like too pure ugh
this might be just me but i feel like mxtx has a lot of opportunities to angst more with like wwx getting whipped or like branded and all those injuries?? maybe its just me being a monster obsessed with angst 😥 but i would’ve liked more emphasis on how much they actually suffered from these injuries bc ik they’re cultivators with strong cores but like. ??? pain is a thing
once more i dislike madam yu BUT when she faces off against wang lingjiao in this scene??? queen????
Tumblr media
i feel super bad for jiang cheng but like. bro. please don’t strangle ur brother. and then wwx risked so much to rescue him :((
WWX GOT YEETED INTO THE BURIAL MOUNDS OMFG??!?!?!! HOW DID HE SURVIVE OM SO CURIOUS??? his dark emo era as the yiling patriarch is actually so legendary tho. also like i was highkey touched by how jiang cheng just immediately supported him even if he was a bit 🤏 crazy yk 🤪
lan xichen’s intense flute solo. that’s it. you can’t convince me that he doesn’t ship wangxian.
WWX’S DOMESTIC FANTASIES WAH 😩
the siege hunt 😍😍😍 first wwx throwing the flowers, then absolutely annihilating everyone at archery blindfolded, and then. THE KISS?!?!? HAHSHAJFKEKDHAJSH being the kind person that i am, i’ve included the image below so feast your eyes once more on this gorgeous art
Tumblr media
JIANG YANLI POP OFF OMG LITERALLY AMAZING I LOVE HER SO MUCH YOU GO GIRL
that cliffhanger ending omg 😦
i was up all night bingeing this and it was so so worth it, probably my favourite book of the series so far!!! this was super long so thank you for reading if you did 🥺

Restless Rewatch: The Untamed Episode 03
(Masterpost)(Previous Episode)
Warning: Spoilers for all 50 episodes!
Tumblr media
Wei Wuxian demonstrates the purple nurple technique of the Jiang Clan
Should’ve Used Trivago
The Jiang Clan’s reservation got cancelled while they were on the road, so they are going to wander around this small inn for hours being fussed about it, rather than trying another inn. Yes they say the other inns are all full but…so is this one, now.
Tumblr media
The Jin Clan sends an advance party to fancy up the inn for them.
Tumblr media
Fuckboi Wei Wuxian
Wei Wuxian decides to use his considerable powers of prettiness to get them a room.  He drops some poetry on Mianmian and brazenly flirts with her before shifting to properly introducing himself and asking for a room.
Tumblr media
This actually works.
Tumblr media
...until her boss shows up.
(Much much more after the cut!)
Worst Person // Best Jin
Jin ZIxuan is an ass and a snob.
I guess we have to give him credit for having a beautiful sidekick and never hitting on her, given that his dad is a rapist and one of his half-brothers is (reputedly) a sex pest and the other half brother is (definitely) an incest perp. But I feel like it doesn’t take much to be the best Jin of his or his father’s generation.
Tumblr media
The Jin folks are snobs and talk about how great their fancy and expensive stuff is. It’s an interesting contrast with true connoisseur Nie Huaisang, who loves everything that is fine and beautiful and can quote stacks of poetry off the top of his head, but is not even a little bit of a snob.
Tumblr media
This Tea Smells Like Farts
Ok, let’s talk about generation names in the Jin clan. Ru is the name for Jin Ling’s generation, hence his courtesy name Rulan. The name for the current generation is apparently Zi (子), because both Zixuan and his jerk cousin Zixun have that as their name.  Sect Leader Jin Guangshan would seem to be using the generation name Guang, but then names his son Jin Guangyao so…the whole system breaks down.
Anyway, my point here is that even considering generation names, if I had a baby and named it Zixuan, and my sister-in-law promptly had a baby and named it Zixun, I would slap her.
Tumblr media
Find you a lover who does not make you feel like this
Jin Zixuan is mildly intrigued by his betrothed, and expresses it by being rude to her in front of Wei Wuxian, starting a chain of events that will culminate with Wen Ning’s fist going all the way through Jin Zixuan’s chest.
Tumblr media
Side Note: Look at these young Jiang Brothers and their casual shoulder hugs. Sigh.
Wei Wuxian’s Combat PlayBook
When Wei Wuxian wants to throw down, he starts with smack talk, moves along to boundary crossing, then to direct threats, and then brings out a weapon if he hasn’t won already.
Here he starts shit with Jin Zixuan by complaining at him for taking up too much space and having too many sycophants.  Then he goes for the unwelcome shoulder touch.
Tumblr media
Having been sufficiently provocative to get someone to draw a sword and threaten him with physical violence, he shifts to formal verbal sparring.
Tumblr media
This gets the other guy to back down, because even at this age no-one actually wants to tangle with Wei Wuxian, and Wei Wuxian gets to claim the moral advantage, although he still doesn’t get to keep his hotel room.
Actually Not A Fan of My Sister’s Betrothal
Jin Zixuan and Jiang Yanli have the first of many, many moments of heterosexual ineptitude together. Wei Wuxian quickly rescues them.
Tumblr media
Hi, I’m Young Master Cockblock.
Neither of the boys understands what Yanli sees in Zixuan and neither do I, at this juncture. He does improve later after multiple beatings from Wei Wuxian.
Tumblr media
This Is The Day Your Life Will Surely Change
Yanli’s encounter in the Inn is the first step toward the inexorable end of the three of them as a unit, although it’s still a long ways off. They are all growing up and she and Wei Wuxian are both going to fall in love at summer camp, like in a 1980s teen movie but without the virginity betting (presumably).
Meanwhile poor Jiang Cheng is going to be swept along just trying to keep up with events, which becomes the story of his life for the next two decades.
Welcome to Transylvania
We meet Wen Ruohan. He is boring and he sucks. Also I’m summarizing the Transylvania parts out of order because they break up the rhythm of the story. And are boring and suck.
We meet Xue Yang. He seems nice.
Tumblr media
Wen Ruohan’s living room is like a shitty nightclub where everyone is too drunk to dance except Xue Yang.
Tumblr media
Dee Jay: Undead undead undead, Bela Lugosi’s dead
[OP can’t get a video to embed in this post with looping enabled, so the alternate version of this joke has its own post right here. That will teach OP to get fancy.]
Anyhoo
We meet Wen Qing. She is the bestest most wonderful girl in the world but this isn’t actually when we find that out.
Tumblr media
Right now we just find out that she is absurdly pretty, that she loves her brother deeply, and that she is helping Wen Ruohan with his “take over the world by murdering cultivators” project. OKAY, PROBLEMATIC, BUT SHE IS THE BESTEST GIRL OKAY?
Gatekeeping
The Jiang Clan don’t get another inn but they do manage to change into immaculate white robes while they’re out on the street, so - nice work, Jiang Clan. Be free!
Tumblr media
They get stuck outside the gate because they don’t know that the secret to getting into Cloud Recesses is to set the gate guard on fire.
Walking Thirst Trap Hanguang-Jun
Lan Wangji shows up and everyone except Yanli, who is already in love with Sir Golden Pants, makes thirst faces at him. Including Jiang Cheng tho he will never admit it. One girl in the background is actually biting her knuckle.
Tumblr media
Note: Lan Wangji knows exactly how fine he is. Look at his fucking hairstyle.
Tumblr media
He is sixteen years old. The only person in the entire cultivation world with fancier hair is Nie Mingjue, and that’s because he indulges his dìdi’s braiding hobby.
Tumblr media
Wei Wuxian loudly stage whispers that LWJ is their key to getting in and LWJ is is like, not fucking likely, person I didn’t glance at yet.
Tumblr media
But then Wei Wuxian says a smart cultivator thing about the puppet dude, and Lan Wangji turns around and has the first of many long mutual staring sessions with this boy he totally isn’t going to like at all.
Tumblr media
Jiang Cheng has a bad feeling about the future: a 2-frame gif
Unrelated gardening note: the red-crack puppet is more commonly grown in Gusu and Dafan, while the black-line puppet is native to Yiling
Tumblr media
I Must Arrange a Date with this Uninteresting Boy
The rest of the evening is a series of tests that Lan Wangji puts Wei Wuxian through. Wei Wuxian doesn’t know this and Lan Wangji probably doesn’t exactly know it either.
First he sends WWX back to town to get the invitation. Yes, go get it. Not your entourage; YOU, talky person who thinks he can manipulate me and is smart and looks...intriguing. Go find it and come back.
When Wei Wuxian complains, Lan Wangji silences him, which is literally the most boss move he could have used on smooth talking Wei Wuxian.
Tumblr media
You tried, Fuckboi.
Would you like to try some more because I think I would like you to try some more
Tumblr media
Jiang Cheng is the Better Baby Brother
Sorry, he just is. Wei Wuxian is all about being taken care of and adoring Yanli without actually doing much for her. Jiang Cheng is the one who thinks about her feelings and giving her what she needs, even to the point of arranging that wedding rehearsal dinner so she can be with her favorite brother again -- the favorite who isn’t him, much as she also loves him.
Tumblr media
Date Test 1: Can You Get In.
Once Wei Wuxian is definitely gone, Lan Wangji shows up again and collects the entire retinue, guaranteeing that Wei Wuxian will be stranded outside the gate when he gets back.  LWJ doesn’t wait by the gate; he goes and waits up on the roof instead of going to bed or whatever else he’s supposed to be doing. Because he already knows the route Wei Wuxian will be taking.
Tumblr media
Wei Wuxian passes the “get in through the wards” test with no problem besides a minor headache and bent fingers.
Tumblr media
Is that Xiao Zhan’s hand or did they use a double-jointed hand model?
Date Test 2: Fight Me (Lan Wangji’s Combat Playbook)
As soon as Wei Wuxian shows up on the roof, Lan Wangji picks a fight with him.
Tumblr media
LWJ fights all the time; he’s perfectly comfortable when he’s fighting and it’s a good venue for him to express himself. His style is graceful and aggressive.
Tumblr media
Attack attack attack strike a pose, vogue, you know it.
He starts by going all in on swordplay, but that doesn’t gain him the advantage; Wei Wuxian fends him off without ever drawing his sword. Which is probably the hottest thing that has ever happened to Lan Wangji in his young life.
Tumblr media
Do you like me better when I’m horizontal?
Next Lan Wangji deploys the pettiness by breaking WWX’s wine. Then when Wei Wuxian starts insulting him he upgrades to next level pettiness by dropping another silence spell, this time with the added bonus of preventing WWX from drinking.
Wei Wuxian’s Combat Playbook, Redux
Meanwhile Wei Wuxian is running his own fight routine, starting with a charm attack, which doesn’t work at all.
Tumblr media
Are you admiring the moon?
He keeps trying to de-escalate for the first phase of their fight, until they reach a pause and he reflects that Lan Wangji has real skills. As soon as he makes that determination he goes on the offensive - with words.
Tumblr media
He very formally says he’s too busy to continue fighting, and turns away, which is a pretty solid roast when you say it to someone who’s been trying really hard to kick your ass. Then he continues defending easily until Lan Wangji uses the wine against him.
At this point the gloves come off, with Lan Wangji lecturing Wei Wuxian, Wei Wuxian making ad hominem attacks, Lan Wangji forcibly shutting him up...
Tumblr media
...and then throwing him on the floor in front of Lan Qiren and Lan Xichen.
Sincere Grief for the Death of our Colleague
Tumblr media
Lan Qiren and Lan Xichen feel really bad for their disciple who has been horribly turned into an undead creature. Ha ha j/k
Date Test 3: Face the Authorities
Lan Wangji gets to pick Wei Wuxian’s punishment.  This probably won’t awaken anything in him.
Tumblr media
Surprise surprise, Wei Wuxian actually passes the Authority test with flying colors. Lan Qiren doesn’t like him, but listens respectfully to his thoughts about the undead cultivator. And Lan Xichen clearly does like him.
When Wei Wuxian learns that Lan Wangji was nice to his sister, his entire demeanor changes, to such an enormous degree that Lan Wangji starts to run away.
Tumblr media
He’s not going to let this boy (who has passed all the tests oh no he passed all the tests) make out with him in front of his family like he is obviously planning.
But once again, Wei Wuxian’s cultivation knowledge captures Lan Wangji’s attention and breaks through his reserve.
Tumblr media
This Hardy Boys moment is the beginning of their cultivation partnership.
Tumblr media
Lan Wangji is brave but is extremely constrained: by the authorities in his life and by his own rigid reserve. Wei Wuxian is brave and is also free. His companionship gives Lan Wangji an opportunity to engage with a much broader range of the things that interest him than he’s ever had before.
After Wei Wuxian has been sent to bed, Lan Wangji stands outside and -- just as WWX had suggested at the beginning of their date/fight -- admires the moon, with an expression that’s anything but upset.
Tumblr media
Sure, sex is cool (probably), but have you ever analyzed a walking corpse with a beautiful boy in the moonlight?
If you’ve got your true honey Life can be pretty funny If you've got money, money to burn Rooty toot toot for the moon It's the biggest star I've ever seen
The Fine-as-Hell Brothers
Alone together, Lans Xichen and Wangji talk over the various things on their minds.
Tumblr media
Xichen: What the fuck is up with you? ...Rooftop fights and dropping spells on boys?
Wangji: You and uncle were ignoring me so I was making my own fun
Xichen: Yeah, we are dealing with this zombie situation; shit’s going to hit the fan
Wangji: what are you going to do about it?
Xichen: fuck-all
Wangji: Well, you can rely on me
Xichen: I totally do. So how about you get to know this Wei kid, he seems like a fun ride.
Wangji: *death glare*
Xichen: You know, since Dad died you’ve become even more uptight. I wonder if I’ve been too strict with you?
Wangji: Um, you think? 3000 fucking rules, dude. Fortunately I’m not going to go off the rails and fall in love with my polar opposite and cause havoc in the cultivation world or anything like that.
Xichen: good, me neither
