Now Announcing Spideytorch Week 2023!

Spideytorch Week is a weekly event centered around the relationship between Peter Parker (Spider-Man) and Johnny Storm (The Human Torch) from the Marvel comics!

The event will take place October 9th thru October 15th!

This years' themes are:

Day 1 - Across the Multiverse: Go wild with imagination of all the possible Peter Parkers and Johnny Storms in the Marvel multiverse from Peter B. Parker and a Jonathan L.S. Storm to 1930s Spider-Noir and Long Island man Jonathan Storm. The possibilities are as endless as the multiverse.

Day 2 - Space/Exploration: The Fantastic Four and Spider-Man have been to space on many occasions. Outer Space is vast and wide with a limitless amount of things to explore, including Peter and Johnny's feelings for one another.

Day 3 - Caught in the Act: What happens if Peter and Johnny get caught in the act? Did the paparazzi capture a kiss between Johnny and Spider-Man after a rough fight, or does Johnny film another tape that gets stolen again, starring one Peter Parker this time? (See Amazing Spider-Man Digital #17, 2009)

Day 4 - Villain AU: Anything and all things villain related go here. Peter or Johnny can be villians or they can be working together to stop a villain. Maybe Peter never did rid himself of the Venom symbiote. It's all up to your villainous imagination.

Day 5 - Domestic AU: From moving in or living together to babysitting or raising kids and everything in between, anything with that domestic vibe goes on this day.

Day 6 - New York, New York: The more things change the more they stay the same. Nothing has been more constant to Spideytorch than New York City. This day is anything related to Peter and Johnny and the Big Apple like hot dog dates on many a rooftops in the city to keeping villains of the streets of Manhattan.

Day 7 - Free Day!: Participant's choice! Anything goes on this day! You can also use as a makeup day if you missed the deadline for any other day.

The above are just recommendations for the theme each day so feel free to put your own spin on any of the themes.

Lena Luthor gets an either time or dimensionally-displaced Kryptonian on her balcony who inexplicably seems to think a Luthor can help him, and then she has to deal with that. Kara does not love this development (but definitely loves Lena) and Conner just wants to get home to his family.

I Want It That Way, by WynterSky. TimKon. I cannot even explain to you how good this fucking fic is. Just--TimKon, but make it 90's. Why are you still here? Go read it. Go read it NOW.

Catherine/Bruce Medieval AU, by iselsis and PotatoLady. Catherine/Bruce, past Catherine/Willis. What it says on the tin, and also omegaverse. I am WAY too into this fic, hah, "Bruce saves Catherine and takes in her and Jason both" is so, so small a genre but so, so GOOD a genre. [ tw: past rape ]

A Hummingbird Suspended, by poisonivory. Thad/Match. Thad gets out of the Speed Force and wants to fuck shit up, but unfortunately Match is very attractive and has even more unfortunately grown some morals.

Gut Feeling, by Ao3time. Lois finds a superclone in a lab and welp he's hers now. No takebacksies.

With Violet Light, by Evilpixie. Jason Todd wants to blow up the Batmobile and ends up a Star Sapphire. There's, uh, an adjustment period.

This isn't how things are supposed to go. But we've always been unorthodox., by RenkonNairu. Superbat, TimKon. Kryptonian omegas are not the same as human ones, and human alphas are not the same as Kryptonian ones. And therefore Bruce Wayne and Tim Drake are having a fucking time of it with Clark Kent and Conner Luthor, and Lex is just doing his damnedest to ruin as much shit as he possibly can. [ tw: rape ]

I am cursed to be in a spideytorch mood but I don't feel like writing any of my stories so here's some headcanons

Johnny fell first but Peter fell harder

Despite never telling anyone else about the Web (and possibly being forbidden from telling people, it's heavily implied at least) Peter has told Johnny about it and the Web Warriors

Johnny tells him all about space and the alien races he's met

Both could listen to the other talk about each other's interests for hours (and have)

They have an agreement that if one climbs into the other's window for any reason, there's no questions asked

Johnny is the only one to know the full extent of Peter's fears and trauma

Similarly, Peter is the only one to know the full extent of how the Negative Zone affected (and still affects) Johnny

Johnny reminds Peter that not all humans are horrible, Peter reminds Johnny that he's not alone

Johnny has actually helped Peter hide a body by burning it and any evidence linking Peter to the crime scene

Peter has broken in to a lot of shady places for the Fantastic Four simply because Johnny asked him to

Scissors and heart for the fic ask meme for the one where J Jonah Jameson Goes Off about mutant rights

drop the title of a fic i wrote + a symbol in my ask and i’ll tell you…

✄: something i deleted before the final draft

I am SO dedicated to mulching and reusing absolutely everything I possibly can from my first drafts I wasn't sure I had anything for this, but I did cut like 25 words and I will now write 500 about why. I cut an extension of the joke where Betty's asked why she's happy their boss is screaming with rage because Jonah would have to kick the assholes out offscreen for it to work, and they'd skip straight to article planning without a confrontation. Like:

“…Why is that a good thing, Miss Brant.” Betty smiled up at him so her eyes squinched. “He isn’t mad at us!” "WHERE ARE MY CRACK TEAM OF PROFESSIONALS?" Betty beamed. "See?"

That's much weaker scene arrangement obviously so I wasn't able to work the whole of the planned gag in.

Also culled in favor of the bit where Jonah remixes his memetic line and demands PICTURES! PICTURES OF X-MEN! was a variant that goes like "PARKER / Yessir / GET ME YOUR BEST MUTANT PHOTOS / Yessir- What, sir?" which is kind of Vimesian in a way I enjoy, but the core point of "it's weird to hear Jonah demanding a different thing in this specific way" isn't really clear unless you do the full iconic line, which is too long to have a yes sir-what sir joke around it. Like it has to be something short enough you can zone out through it and then replay it in your head an instant later, and the PICTURES line has a big pause in the middle. ...You can put the first yes sir in the pause, but then the whole thing still has to go early enough that it's plausible to have not guessed what Jonah is going to ask for.... So instead it got a lampshade where the Bugle staff get to lean on the fourth wall slightly harder.

There's also a bit, assassinated for being too implausible, where someone asks Peter "Isn't that Cyclops' name?" when he's texting contact name Scotty Boy and he goes "NO." I hate him.

Also not making it out of the starter notes was I'm pretty sure the first words I jotted down when I got the ask - I thought the snip at the end where MJ makes fun of Peter might be like, a more ongoing montage of post-publishing reactions? So on autopilot I hypothesized a fragment of spideytorch banter wherein Peter shows Johnny the article, Johnny goes "What is this?" and Peter says "It's a newspaper. They're very useful once you learn how to read." And then Johnny throws the paper at his face. This was written because it's closer to my wheelhouse than the actual premise and deleted because it contributes absolutely nothing. There is no reason for more people that many degrees of separation away from the core concept of the prompt to be there.

Generally if I have come up with a tangent with any redeeming value that isn't actively contradicted by something more important I will add it in, but this fic came with a point it actually mattered to lose track of, which directly contributed to it being, in my opinion, noticeably higher quality than my average output - less meandering and simultaneously longer. A lot of the writing process on the Jonah fic was me going "can I stop now?", mentally substituting in some real world minority in place of mutants, and then if the result made me want to go lean over the washing machine and slam the door repeatedly on my own head, that meant it wasn't done. Who Knew Being Forced (at prompt point) To Stand For Something Improves Your Work.

I think I nailed keeping the pacing up by cutting between interconnected scenes, if that counts. I really like how the flow of the first bit reads, and it was really satisfying to put together. It was also just a lot of fun to juggle a modern-flavored conflict and my preferred vintage comic aesthetic and cast, and to sneak in a bunch of continuity nods and cameos and tidbits of concepts. I just had a blast writing and publishing the whole thing, honestly. It was a great ask, and I'm really glad people like it.

hey i’ve been rereading all of your spideytorch fic for the millionth time bc i love basically everything you write (i wish i could write dialogue half as funny & clever honestly!!!!!) and i noticed you have peter describe johnny as a star / his star a lot which got me thinking about a stardust au!!!!! just wondering if you’ve ever considered it and how / if you think it would work????

Thank you!!! I'm so happy my fic makes you happy, anon. (My trick to dialogue is really just listening to how people talk a lot, if possible! You can pick up a lot by focusing on the particular rhythm of speech and from there on it helps you write punchier dialogue.)

I actually haven't read or watched Stardust! I know I should, so maybe I'll do that soon. I really just like star imagery with Johnny because I think it's romantic. 🌟✨🌃 But it's funny, I actually do think someone started a Spideytorch Stardust AU at some point. I did a quick search through the ao3 tag but I couldn't find it, unfortunately! Maybe someone else knows what I'm thinking about.

Girlies are so insane cuz they come with their stuff like: "Omg, Scogan!! Spideytorch!! Darkice!" as if any have what Cablepool and Daken/Johnny had back in the late 2000's and early 2010's.

Like, being fair... those two came from writers actually wanting them to be gay but alas.

No for real. Because like Cablepool and Daken/Johnny were INTERESTING. There was DEVELOPMENT there. Like was Cablepool frequently kind of homphobic? YES. But it was ENRICHING.

Like WHO ELSE was putting an old man and a gross man nobody likes together and saying they were both married and divorced? Nobody. Nobody else was bringing that kind of energy because all anybody else cared about were young hot pretty people. Not people with wrinkles and scars. Not people who are objectively kind of terrible people.

And like Daken/Johnny was SUCH an interesting couple because they didn't exist to just be hot guys who are gay together which is like 90% of gay couples in comics lets be honest. Marjorie Liu was exploring THEMES and IDEAS with that. She was diving into Daken's self-hatred and self-destructive tendencies. Like every relationship she wrote Daken in was about exploring his development as a person, or his REGRESSION as a person as a result of him trying to figure out what his place in the world should be. Daken/Johnny was him getting a glimpse- through Johnny's eyes and the way that Johnny chose to see the best in him- at who he could've been if he was raised with love. It's him seeing the possibility of the happy, loved person he could end up being and then REJECTING that because it would mean letting go of the only purpose he has ever had in life.

And we are never gonna get that shit again because, thanks to certain writers who shall not be named, Daken is now firmly just a dickish good guy because yay Wolverine fam type content! Makes me SICK.

God like it absolutely is! Hold on every go watch how to loose a guy in ten days or this going to make no sense. It’s so fun absolutely worth the watch btw

Peter as Andy, journalist that hates his job and is trying to be taken seriously but is relegated to writing fluff pieces. Johnny as Ben, the man’s man that can’t make a relationship last past the one night stand. For the sake of keeping the original plot and for daily bugle vibes Peter’s best friend characters are Betty and Eddie. Betty is crying about Ned leaving her cue the plot of the movie. Peter is accused of having everyone falling deeply in love with him instantly despite the glaring red flags and he’s gotta write the piece “how to loose a guy in ten days.” Because I still want super heroes involved here, Johnny is still on the fantastic four but he’s trying to get his acting career off the ground, he’s trying to get a part in a romcom but he’s the playboy of heroes what does he know of romance. The director and screenwriter take him out to a bar and challenge him to get with the cute nerd with glasses, real boy next door type, but get him to stay until the red carpet movie premiere so that they can prove Johnny is leading man material. Cue the plot of the movie!

I love that line in the movie where Ben is standing on the fire escape and says to himself “oh you’re falling in love with me already” and Andy looks up at him and says something like “I’m going to make you wish you were dead.” I cannot express enough that this movie is the opposite of taming of the shrew. Like that’s the vibe I want for the beginning of the fic! Johnny trying desperately to pull out all the stops for this cute but unassuming nerd that he’s fully aware he’s using and Peter actively committing psychological warfare. Andy in the movie does a lot of like clingy crazy girlfriend things but I don’t think that translates for dudes or for Peter so I think it’d be a lot of emotional unavailability, swinging out on dates (it’s only strictly necessary half the time), being weirdly mean and petty, etc. There’s this scene in the movie where Andy ruins Ben’s boys night but let’s be real Johnny doesn’t have enough friends for that what I think would be even funnier is if was like Peter trying to be himself and Spider-Man to ruin their weekly movie nights and like switching wildly between costumes. The dynamic flips after the couples therapy incident (if you’ve seen the movie you know what I’m talking about the way Ben flies down the fire escape just to beg her on his knees!) Peter gets to meet the rest of the fantastic family, they take a vacation to Glennville, and that’s the moment they fall in love for real. Johnny official invites Peter to the premier and it’s adorable and perfect and they’re having such a good time at the premier until Spider-Man bullshit. Peter tries to make an excuse, telling Johnny that the human torch should go take care of that. Johnny jury kisses him sweet and slow, telling him that Spider-Man can take care of it, he doesn’t want superhero stuff ruining their perfect night. Peter obviously has to leave for Spider-Man stuff and when Johnny notices Peter is gone he goes to help, maybe burning the supervillain a little more than necessary. Peter gets back to the premier as fast as possible but Johnny gets there first and blows up at him. The whole thing comes crumbling down around them, the challenge and the article, and they have the dramatic break up. Johnny reads Peter’s article later and realizes he still loves him, but it’s not enough because Peter is flaky and he can’t trust him but damn it Johnny still kinda loves the dork too. He calls Spider-Man to the Statue of Liberty to ask advice but it’s Peter there waiting for him. Big romcom confession moment! Peter tells Johnny he’s Spider-Man and that’s why he’s so flaky and he wants to fold all parts of his life into Johnny’s life. They kiss and all is forgiven roll credits

7. Is there a character or ship you'd love to write for, but haven't yet?

There are many. One that I think about often is Spideytorch, because I love a good college buddies/roomates with benefits trope. And also Johnny's gay jock energy is such a good foil to Peter's crabby bi anxiety. After Spideycat, I want to write both Peter and Wade in more non-"soulmate" relationships, exploring a friends-with-benefits situation with would be fun.

I could go on and on about all the other ships in my head, but I'll restrain myself.

16. Is there a type of fic you would never write?

a/b/o or soulmates. Also I have told myself I would never write a characterXreader fic because they annoy me. But who knows what my horny brain will do at some point.

24. What are some of your favorite tropes?

I feel like I've written a lot of my favorites already - kidnapping, priest/demon, social media, antagonists to lovers, demonic/alien possession. I'd love to write/read more office romance (hellooooo Lokius), some power difference like mentor/student or team leader/lackey (is that an official trope? I'm thinking like the Handler fic or Cablepool-style.) I also love time-loop stories, but I don't have the spoons to do that much planning for a fic atm.

32. What's a fic you'd love to write, but probably never will?

What a depressing question! Haha. I hope all the weird little stories in my head make it out one day.

But I just took a spin through my prompt notes, and one that sticks out to me is Peter as a young detective who realizes he has a stalker (possibly Harry) and Wade is a PI with unconventional methods who helps him solve the case. It's pretty dark because the stalker kills off Peter's friends and family, leaving riddles as clues that Peter can't solve in time. I still really like the idea but I don't know if I'll ever be able to write that much horrible shit into one story, lol.

34. Are there any common themes you like to explore in your writing?

Trauma and healing. Morality vs. the law. Curiosity and awe at nature/the unknowable. Having someone else know or see you when you don't know yourself that well. And uuuuuh kink discovery 😆

Absolutely cackling at the idea of the Avengers and Fantastic 4 seated around the living room and Johnny's gloating about the Spidey fans he met; "They were the same kids from our fight a while back, remember? He called me out in the street," he directed at Sue, who nodded into her book.

Johnny smiled. "I'm so glad I got to apologize and let them know about the reconstruction - of the tea shop that I blew up? God, I couldn't stand it if doe eyes like those hated me forever."

He nudged Spider-Man next to him, who sputtered a little. "Doe eyes?"

"Yeah, big brown eyes," he grinned. "And cute, too. Who knew he'd have a crush on me?"

Spider-Man tensed beside him and laughed, "On you? Super-Billboard-Model? Who would?"

Johnny brushed back his hair and feigned distress. "Sue totally killed my image - she gave him sunscreen to give to me. The audacity," he stuck out his tongue when Sue sent him a finger, then turned back to his friend. "But anyway, do you know a Peter Parker?"

Across the room, Tony choked on his tea.

"You okay?" Sue sat up a little, but didn't leave her spot under Reed's arm.

"Yeah," Tony coughed into his arm, eyes red and laughing. He looked at Johnny, "You met my intern?"
