Unless specified, mentions of Albert will be referring to Albert I, King of the Belgians.

This is the very last part of this series, and I would like to post it today, on the anniversary of the death of our beloved Albert.

Visiting the royal crypt is the very reason why I decided to make my trip to Belgium at the start of 2023, and it was opening on 8th January (check other dates here). This place only opens once a month, and I was so lucky that I had the opportunity to pay a visit to the final resting place of one of my favourite historical figures.

Laeken is a very peaceful neighbourhood, which is well-connected to the city centre with the railway and tram. Getting off at the station closest to the cathedral, you can just walk straight to Atomium (the World Expo area) across Parc de Laeken.

It’s already late afternoon by the time I was there, but at least I have around an hour and half to go around the cathedral, as well as the crypt.

Near the entrance of the crypt there is the family tree for the Belgian Royal Family, displayed; those who were interred in the royal crypt are marked. As you see, besides all the past monarchs who have passed away, some of the Belgian princes and princesses are buried there as well, notably Albert’s parents and Charlotte (Carlotta), wife of Archduke Maximilian (Emperor Maximiliano) and Empress of Mexico and the sister in-law to Empress Sisi, the godmother and namesake to Elisabeth, Albert’s wife.

I went in from the other door (partially shown in the picture above) because I want to save Albert’s tomb the last and I just had a nice time chilling around. In the centre was the tomb of Leopold I, the first King of the Belgians and ancestor to all the monarchs of Belgium. The doors behind goes to Laeken cemetery.

Aaaaaaaand look at ✨them✨ (Albert you’re handsome as ever😭😭😭😭)

The crypt is simple and bright, yet solemn. There were not much people by the time I was there, so I have time to just look at Albert’s grave and collect my thoughts. After that, I walked back up to the ground level and sit at one of the chairs at the nave and enjoy some peace, before I started my way back to the hotel and pack for the morning flight back to the UK on the next day.

“Ah!” you hissed as the cloth touches your wounded cheek, Vil rolls his eyes “Quit whining…it’s your fault you got yourself beaten up…” he says with a lingering annoyance in his voice but still tries to be gentle as he cleans the nasty looking cut on your face

“God…this is gonna leave a ugly scar” he mumbles in frustration, (you’re going to have a SCAR on you’re pretty face) the thought pains, angers and disappoints him, he made that apparent by shooting a glare at you as he puts down the cloth to go get stuff to dress your wound

You only replied with an amused chuckle, you’re used to this by now since you two have shared numerous occasions like this before, “This isn’t funny potato.” He snaps while applying a gauze pad on your cheek, eye brows threaded together. “Remind me again, Why do you constantly want to get hurt??” he asked sarcastically while securing the gauze pad.

Smiling, you put your hand on top of his and kissed his palm softly, “ ‘cuz I know you’ll be taking care of me afterwards” you joked, earning a “are you serious” look from Vil. You laughed and kissed his hand again, hoping it’d ease the tension a bit

He turns around, cleaning up the mess but also hiding the fact that his cheeks tinted pink from your actions, sighing “Well I’ll have you know, when you stubbornly keep ignore my warnings about your rough housing habits, I will no longer aid to you after you get beaten into a pulp.” That was a lie, he did it in attempt to get you to stop getting into trouble so much. Call it tough love.

“Really? You’d really leave me to die?” You asked in an exaggerated dramatic way, “Oh please” he scoffs at your question, as he puts away the first aid kit in his bathroom. “My queen no longer cares for me ack!” You said clutching your chest and shutting your eyes as if you were hurt, while trying not to laugh at Vil’s reaction

“You’re bad at acting potato…” he cringed, shaking his head as he approached you again. “Teach me then” you chirped looking up at him, “So what? So you can get into more trouble?“ he replied pinching your cheek

“So I can spend more time admiring you” you cooed flashing him a soft loving smile, earning a soft laugh from him as he cupped your face gently in his hands “Sweet talker” he said grinning at you, you inched closer and pecked his lips “You love it though” you giggled

He groaned in amusement, pulling you closer to him, not minding if his clothes get ruffled in the process. His softly planted a kiss on the crown of your head, “I love you” you whispered to him, “if you really love me you’d stop getting me worried about your stupid pretty face getting punched…” you laugh at his remark

“Promise me you’ll still take care of me if I do though” you negotiated, he rolls his eyes and rested his chin on top of your head “fine.” He agreed, though he wasn’t going to stop taking care of you either way, he doesn’t to admit it yet but he’s down bad for you..

I watched Meg Ryan’s new movie What Happens Later and I just have mad respect that the absolute queen of rom-coms directed a movie where in the first five minutes one of the characters unplugs a digital sign with a generic ad flashing the words “rom-com” on it and the omniscient airport announcer sounds like 90s trailer voice man. So meta, loved it. I watched it like it was week 15 of a college course on rom-coms where we just watched every classic Meg Ryan performance and then the professor says, now let’s see what america’s sweetheart herself has to say about it all. And we think we’re going to watch a traditional rom-com, a comeback, a triumphant return to a familiar place if you will, but we’re actually watching an existential two-hander stage play about perception and aging and what it means to really be honest with someone else and with yourself. And the songs are familiar 90s songs but they sound wrong because they’re just oddly homogeneous sounding covers of the originals. And the whole thing takes place in this unnamed regional airport during a storm, a liminal space where the foreground and backgrounds are filled with blurry faces and legs walking by in the background until eventually there’s a scene later on where they’re just silhouettes. After the first 10 minutes of the movie the characters only talk to each other and the electronic voices of support kiosks and the omnipotent airport announcer and take phone calls that we can’t hear the other end of and we don’t see the phone screen telling us who is calling. They sit in restaurants with no waitstaff and bars with no bartenders. There’s no sense of direction either you don’t get any sense of the layout of the space they’re occupying and the aerial shot of the airport at various points during the movie looks sharp but the characters are almost always walking in circles. I don’t know man I was riveted, I was stroking my chin in deep thought, I just kept saying “interesting, interesting.”

edit: also I left the dvd menu screen on for like two hours after I finished watching the movie, it just kept playing this absolutely hypnotic 18 seconds of the score over a clip of them dancing in a hallway as seen from the outside looking in through falling snow and there’s a continuity error where David Duchovny’s white shirt alternates between being tucked in and untucked and I didn’t even care. During that actual scene they’re dancing to “Pure” by The Lightning Seeds which is the only not-a-cover song in the movie i think? And at one point Meg Ryan looks up and yells “louder” and the music gets a little louder and I’m sitting on the couch in my living room but I’m trying to figure out where I am actually because I thought I was gonna watch a trope-heavy romcom but I’m sat here typing out this stream-of-consciousness movie analysis on tumblr dotcom.
