Dean is terrified to lose Cas and he wants to lean on Mary about it, SPN 12x20

When Cas joins forces with Kelly to bring Jack to life at full power, Dean is scared out of his mind, perhaps rightfully so.

It's never been clear how much was cosmic brainwashing and how much was Cas. He could've been his worst shadow self: living as vicarious god through Jack's power...or at his best: more charitably, wanting a good future for his loved ones (evidenced in the script vision).

Anyway, it's no wonder Dean is terrified, given Cas's history of being jerked around by cosmic forces.

Dean: I didn’t recognize the guy staring back at me.

upside to netflix having the recaps again? s1 snippet and i can coo over baby sam and dean. downside, they start bringing in references to witches, crossroad demons, ketch and his fact finding mission, baby lucifer with joseph!cas and mary!kelly and i'm already exhausted and want to do something besides watch the episode.

i'm digging the witch lady accessories. so this is mom of those random hunters we met briefly in asa fox? i know the recap was a couple minutes ago but i don't retain names very well

realizing i am expecting sam to be (at least acting) cool, calm, and collected about everything so seeing him kind of looking worried (briefly) about what's going on with cas got me a little more concerned too.

DEAN How? Seriously I mean up until now if Cas messed up, if he did something wrong, but he thought it was for the right reasons, I got it. Right? But last night, when I looked at him, I did not recognize the guy staring back at me.

the lighting is doing good things for him so far. saw it's another richard speight jr directed episode. dean's capacity for baggage stowing when it comes to cas is pretty expansive

SAM Their mom's on a hunting trip and hasn't been home in a week.

the dialogue that didn't make it into the episode, okay then. that interaction definitely did not make it clear that they knew mary was dead even though it seems logical of course hunters would know since sam and dean are hunter-famous

a) personal space who needs it b) why is dean doing this. must be a jackles choice. his humor seems to go broad with dean. anyway he held a wine glass like a person who has been around wine glasses before in 11x12 🤪 (and he does indeed later in this episode too. shouldn't have let him get away with that :P)

TASHA Yeah. Family's always complicated. Parents always seem smart and strong and perfect. It's only when you grow up that you realize that they're just people.

dean getting life advice from the twig monster wearing a tasha suit? and leaving his phone in the room while he goes off a-huntin' - where's the pocket patdown, dean-o? phone keys wallet phone keys wallet. and now you missed mom calling back of course. at least she left a nice message

well this scene having one of the kids finding the body of dead mom is awful. and it just keeps going.

SAM Dean, you couldn't let Max make some deal for his soul. DEAN Sam, we do terrible things all the time to save each other. I mean, that's what you do for family. Who am I to stop him? SAM Well, he's strong. He'll be all right. DEAN Yeah, I'm not so sure.

lol okay, show. see, what sam and dean do for each other is just regular sibling things! max giving up his soul for the witchy power and stick doll sister because it's better than her being totally dead. now she's just his doll he can control but otherwise she's mostly herself? sounds reasonable. also, is it better to have had the happy family and lose them or never at all?

ALLso, i guess that's the only episodes alicia and max are in? wtf. just for the parallels of it all? fucked up, man o.0 but where do you go with sold your soul for some unknown period of time to live out your days with your twig sister that isn't even more miserable. i guess that's their happy ending 🥴

Honestly, I can't blame Max Banes. I would have done the same for my sister. He is just a young man, probably no older than 21, who just lost both his mom and sister, barely months after losing his dad.

He chose an eternity in Hell to have a few more years with Alicia. Well, with the closest thing to Alicia he could get back. And I am crying so much for them.

And the saddest thing is... It could have been avoided had Max taken his sister more seriously, or had he told her what was going on before storming off the room.

Anyway, I love the Banes twins.

1x01: 4-year-old Dean runs from their burning house before turning back to look up at the light from the window of Sam’s nursery. He tells baby Sam, “It’s okay, Sammy.” Then John comes running from the house to pick them up and carry them away, saying, “I gotcha.”

5x22: Sam looks at Dean bloody and on the ground. Sam is struggling to keep control, and he tells him, “It’s okay, Dean. It’s gonna be okay. I’ve got him.”

1x01: In John’s cluttered motel room, Sam gets Dean’s attention and says, “Hey, Dean? What I said earlier, about mom and dad, I’m sorry.” Dean holds up a hand to stop him and says, “No chick-flick moments.” Sam says, “Alright. Sam says, “Yeah, you love chick-flicks.” He laughs. Dean nods and says, “Yeah, you’re right, I do. Come here.” and he grabs Sam’s shoulders to pull him in for a hug.

1x01: Dean stands in Sam and Jessica’s living room, looking down before he looks up to stare at Sam and tell him, “Dad’s on a hunting trip. And he hasn’t been home in a few days.”

12x20: In the bunker, Sam rolls his shoulders and sighs a little before reciting to Dean, “Their mom’s on a hunting trip, and hasn’t been home in a week.”

1x01: Outside Sam’s building, Dean tells him matter-of-factly, “I can’t do this alone.” Sam shakes his head a little, squinting, as he says, “Yes, you can.” Dean looks down and away before he says, “Yeah. Well, I don’t want to.” Sam blinks, then looks around before hanging his head, resigned.

15x20: In the barn, Sam is crying as he tells Dean, “I can’t do this without you.” Dean looks up at him and quietly responds, “Yes, you can.” Sam looks away and shakes his head, choked up, before looking back to answer, “Well, I don’t want to.” Dean, watery-eyed, smiles a little.

15x01: Both standing at the trunk of the impala, Dean says, “Well, you know what that means.”  They both look into the trunk before Sam says, “We got work to do.” Sam lifts his arm to close the trunk, and the scene changes to show him closing the trunk in the same way at the end of the Pilot.

This 12x22 episode with the Bane twins is seriously heavy to revisit...

WOMAN: When your mother found me, and when I realized what she was, I offered to teach her. (Flashes of the woman coming into the cellar and talking to Tasha as she lays on the table.) I offered her my power. Flash of the woman talking into Tasha's ear. Of the woman carrying a heart. Of Tasha spitting in the woman's face as she rejected the woman's offer. Of the woman wiping her face and turning and leaving. WOMAN: But even dying, she was rude. So... I made her into one of my creatures. (Flash of the woman cutting out Tasha's heart while she screamed. Of the woman holding her heart.) That doll has all of your mother's memories. Image of her placing Tasha's heart into one of her dolls, and reciting a spell. The ring on her finger glows and the doll transforms into Tasha. WOMAN: It's her. Mostly. (She releases Dean and Max from the vision.) Just like the others. Rick, Andy – They do what I want, when I want. I'm old. I like things a certain way. (She seems quite pleased with the way she has arranged things for herself. She smiles at Max and Dean.) MAX: No. No! (He casts a spell at the woman, but it does nothing more that blow her hair back. Max is puzzled that the woman is still just standing there.) WOMAN: Nice try. If you kill me, well, then all of them just fall apart. (She starts to edge closer to Max as she speaks.) So here's the offer. You take my power. You take my burden, and my doll – your mother – will stay with you and your sister forever. Just one big happy family. (Max seems to be considering her offer.) DEAN: Max, no. Listen to me. Your mother is gone, okay? (The woman is not happy that Dean is talking.) It's awful and it sucks... but that's – Aah! (The woman snaps her fingers and Dean is in sudden pain. Max looks quickly at Dean and then back at the woman. She takes her ring off her finger.) WOMAN: So... do we have a deal? She seems quite pleased with the way she has arranged things for herself. She smiles at Max and Dean. MAX: No. No! (He casts a spell at the woman, but it does nothing more that blow her hair back.)

ALICIA: Mom! (The Tasha creature pulls out a knife and stabs Alicia through the stomach with it. She collapses with the knife still in her. Sam is horrified.)

The elderly woman is standing with the ring in her outstretched hand, staring at Max. WOMAN: Take it... and the deal is done. Max seems unable to make a decision. Dean tries to grab his gun. WOMAN: Take it. Max reaches out to take the ring. The woman looks gleeful at how things are going. Suddenly a shot rings out and the woman bleeding and stunned. Dean has managed to reach his gun and shot her with a witch killing bullet. WOMAN: Nice try. If you kill me, well, then all of them just fall apart. Take it.

(Max seems stunned that Dean shot the woman.) MAX: Why did you... (Max turns to Dean quickly as he manages to stand, before looking back at the woman on the floor.) DEAN: Max, listen to me. Hey, hey. I had to, okay? That deal wasn't with her. It was with a demon. You even touch that magic and you lose your soul. (Sam yells from the other room.) SAM: Dean! (Dean pats Max on the shoulder.) DEAN: Come on. (Dean leaves the room and heads back to Sam. Max stands there confused as Dean leaves.)

(Alicia is writhing in pain. Sam doesn't know what do to for her, but is trying to calm her down.) SAM: Don't fight. Don't – Shh, shh. Just take it easy okay? Take a breath. Shh. (Alicia takes a quick breath and then is still.) SAM: Alicia? (Dean walks into the room. Sam looks up at him and stands up.) SAM: She, uh.. (Max enters the room and sees his sister. He pauses before going to where she lays on the floor.) MAX: Alicia? What? Please. No, no, no. Hey. Hey. Hey! Please, no. No, no, no!

(Scene opens outside the boarding house. Max is standing by himself, as Sam and Dean approach him.) SAM: Hey, Max, um, this is, uh... Look, you – you're probably in shock right now, but it's gonna pass. DEAN: And then it's gonna hurt. MAX: I could've saved them... my mom. If I had just... taken Alicia seriously.

There's something to be said here about the resurrection of Mary, the reborn-hunters-as-dolls, and the whole Jack-taking-Chuck's-powers thing. I'm just not yet sure what words to use.

Other things:

A Twigs & Twine Doll is a creature fastened together with twigs and brought to life by placing a human heart in its chest cavity and reciting a spell.

I think of these meanings:

The phrase, "as the twig is bent, so is the tree inclined" = proverb = one's actions as an adult are dictated by behaviors learned in childhood.

The meaning of to twine around (someone or something); To encircle, wrap, or coil around someone or something. Like an ouroboros, perhaps?
