Chelsea and Taika sound like two grown adults who realized they weren't right for each other anymore and divorced. Happens every day. No idea why it's such a big deal when Taika does it.
Whatever happened during their marriage, Taika does seem to have realized he was unfair to her and has promoted some of her more recent work the rare times he's on SM. He's really behind the translation project she and his sister are working on, for example.
I don't think Taika was wanting a "dutiful wife" to follow him around while he was filming and I do think she was being a little unfair to him about that. Asking for his family to join him when he'd be away filming for months on end so he could spend time with them is not a bad thing, especially with young children he otherwise wouldn't get to see much. Especially since Taika has said he wants to be a better father than he ever had.
I also think her putting this out into the world right now was not wise. It's already leading to other clickbait news sites ripping into him for cheating on her, since she "supposedly confirms" it here. They've been separated since 2018 and both have moved on, so why this is making such a big splash on these supposed "news" sites in 2024 I have no idea. I do not think Chelsea said any of this with malicious intent at all though. It just seems like a regular interview that's getting way more attention for things it shouldn't. Instead of her life and career, everyone's instead just using this little bit as more fodder to go after Taika, which is very unfair to both of them.
yeah i don't think chelsea did anything wrong, she's perfectly entitled to tell her side of the story, but i agree that it's a shame that people who weren't involved can't be more normal about it
they broke up because they were between a rock and a hard place. there was no situation where taika could take the job AND chelsea could focus on her career AND the whole family could live together. it's completely reasonable that chelsea didn't want to give up on her work or move her kids away from aotearoa, and it's completely reasonable that taika wanted to not be separated from his family while he was working, and it's completely reasonable for him to have accepted the job anyway because it was a life changing amount of money. there isn't a bad guy
the thing i find really weird is people who will go on and on about him being a bad father and how they feel sorry for his kids. because they don't know him. they've never met him or his kids, they have no idea how often he sees them or what kind of stuff they do together or how they interact with him. and they're acting as if they're coming from a place of genuine compassion etc when imo it's actually really offensive to be speculating wildly about how he's a shit dad and his kids must be so unhappy etc. because then you're not just speculating about a famous guy in the public eye, you're also speculating about two kids who are not celebrities and have a right to privacy.
why are you sitting on reddit thinking about how some 8 year old you have nothing to do with on the other side of the world feels about their parents' divorce? wrong'n behaviour to be honest

It's been discussed by people more eloquent than I, but what they did to Eric in the finale of TLM remake was a sin, a crime, a disservice, and if I ever get over the discomfort, it won't be for a long time.
I simply don't understand their reason to take Ursula's death away from him. On top of that, why would they give it to Ariel? Ariel already saved him once before. The fight against Ursula was supposed to give Eric a turn at being the hero. It was Eric's moment to prove to Triton that he really does love Ariel and is willing to fight for her and protect her and---most importantly---that humans aren't inherently evil in the way Triton believes. Ariel doesn't need to prove herself in this way. She's already shown that she's courageous and brave and unafraid to do difficult things to keep Eric safe. Also in the remake... she knows that Ursula is family, and yet this nuance doesn't seem to mean anything to her? She doesn't hesitate to act in a way that she knows will at least hurt her aunt if not kill her outright, and I understand that the drive to protect Eric is strong but it felt really out of character for Ariel to be the one actively impaling her aunt.
I'm not saying Eric should have done it because ships are his thing (they're not. They're Ariel's thing too, even if Eric is more familiar with the way they actually work n stuff). I just think that when you take into account the status of every character at that point in continuity, it makes sense for Eric to rise to the occasion. It's his chance to save Ariel the way she saved him. It's his chance to prove himself to Ariel's father and gain his trust. He would also be the angriest with Ursula and have the least reason to hesitate when it comes to taking her creepy tentacle shebs down. She tricked him, stole his freewill, used a siren song against him, took the love of his life away and tried to kill her. Given the opportunity to stop her terrorism, he should have been given the same role he had in the original film. Instead he just sits on a rock uselessly after throwing one harpoon, and Ariel leaves his side to do all the heavy lifting.
It makes no sense to me. Is this about presenting Ariel as a strong independent woman who doesn't need a prince to rescue her? Because that's such a flat reason. Like I said, we've already seen Ariel prove herself in the rest of the movie, and the new film did a great job developing her character. She doesn't need this moment of triumph at all. Besides that, there is absolutely nothing wrong with not being a fighter. There's nothing wrong with needing help. Ariel's character would not be cheapened in the slightest by needing Eric to be her hero in that moment, especially because we've already established that she was his hero first. She doesn't need to do it all! I'm tired of this narritive that puts all the pressure of only one half of the ship to deliver in this way, either male or female. A good partnership is one that shares the hard things and gives both people room to use their unique abilities for the benefit of each other. This is something the original movie nailed with Ariel and Eric. They were complementary. Neither one was braver or more heroic than the other, but they presented these qualities differently in a way that didn't detract or rob one or the other of purpose. By taking Ursula's death away from Eric and giving it to Ariel in the remake, Eric's purpose in the story in reduced to Ariel's object of interest (I don't mean in the sense that she has no intense feelings for him or that he isn't her partner). The story is no longer about how they overcome conflict between land and sea together, but rather changes to be how Ariel goes on her own journey and along the way acquires someone to love that affirms and indulges her greatest desires. It was unsettling to see this done to Eric's character. It cheapens the sacrifice he made by going after Ariel when Ursula took her, and it makes him seem foolish for trying to stand against this mighty sea power. He's not arm candy. He's not just a lovable dork she keeps around for the intrigue of his mind and adventurous spirit. Eric is supposed to be a triumphant character that prevails over evil---not because he's powerful---but because he's willing to sacrifice for what he loves. Watching him do a number as a wet rat on a rock while Ariel saves the day does nothing to inspire this sentiment of his character for me. In fact, I was taken aback. It just doesn't make sense that they changed this part of the story when there was nothing wrong with it to begin with and it actually fit in line with both the original and new storyline so neatly. I don't understand it and I really don't like it. It wasn't worth what little it added to Ariel's character to take so much away from Eric. Prince Eric fr doomed by the narritive

You know, I have been thinking latley and.....
Arthur and Rin would be lile the perfect dream team if it wouldn't be for Arthur's racist and borderline genocidal tendencies with demons.
Just hear me out :
Both Arthur and Rin are known for not being the smartest of the bunch. They tend to get very excited abt stuff they enjoy and are very stuborn too. They basically share the same core personality !
Arthur with his claymore has a fighting style more focused on slow, but powerfull attacks. During a fight he moves in rather large heaps at a time. Rin's fighting style is very agile. While his flames allow him to exercise strikes of enormous strenght too, he usually uses smaller/"weaker" heaps with his sword in relative quick succsession.
If we combine those we have Rin able to confuse and distracting a demon bit his more agile fighting style while Arthur can prepare and deal out stronger slashes.
Not to mention what they could do combined. Imagine a blue flame powered Angel Slash.
Returning to their personalities and going away from their fighting abilities, Arthur would the the rock Rin needs in his life. I mean, it's pretty obvious Rin felt kinda lonley after Shiro's passing and struggeled a fair bit with self worth.
He couldn't really rely on Yukio for mental support and he didn't wanna put stuff on his friends. Arthur could be an ear to listen for Rin. Meanwhile Rin would be the thing loosening Arthur up a bit.
He'd show the older that orders aren't everything and props would teach him some social cues by pure proximity.
Not to forget that I am CONVIDENCED that a good chunk of Arthur's problems in the mental department could be solved if they just gave him an apprentice or student to take care of an teach.
Saint Complex and comming off as too princey ? Having a kid around that would look up to Arthur could easily satisfie atleast some of that complex.
Too sadistic/too little empathy for others ? Well kids need a lot of emotion. If Arthur got attached to it he'd deffo naturally get better in that whole empathy department due to pure neccesity.
Too easily manipulatable ? Having someone to teach and look after would deffinitly decrease the amout on time he spends with the Uzais.
Rin who already has a similar personality with Arthur would deffinitly see the blonde getting genuinly attached if we ignore the Spawn of Satan side of things.
Sadly, Arthur was manipulated into being a borderline demonic genocidal maniac by the Uzais 😭
Sorry it took so long to answer this, I've been busy
But I agree with basically all this. I've actually thought a lot about how similar Rin and Arthur are and how they seem kind of like reflections of each other, like Arthur is just how Rin would probably be if he actually was raised as a weapon and not like a son. I also feel like a lot of Arthur's hate towards demons is definitely hammered in by his family, since he doesn't even have an issue with Caliburn (seeing as he actually will hold conversation with her and actually cares enough to wrap her up when its cold, which is cute lol) and he's best friends with Lightning who is obviously a demon fanatic who enjoys seeing and researching demons
The way he seems to almost seem more like a child when Jeremiah comes into the story (how he gets sensitive around his brother and whined about how he wanted to fight in the battle against Satan because Jeremiah said he could) really shows how deep the manipulation goes honestly. I almost wonder if he's scared to go against whatever Jeremiah says sometimes
But if Arthur was able to have that character development I could really see him having an older brother sort of bond with Rin. They're so similar and I feel like they could relate and work together both battle wise and friendship wise pretty well, if that ever were to happen
It'd be cool seeing em fight together too, hopefully if Arthur DOES live and gets his redemption we could see something like that in the manga. It'd be so cool
Plus, I know Yukio wasn't mentioned here, but he has said he likes Yukio despite being a son of Satan as well, so he definitely isn't 100% clouded by his hatred for demons so it could be a possibility still that he can just. Learn to stop being such a dick to Rin if he gets hit with some common sense
But yeah, I enjoy reading your asks and I think most (if not all) of Arthur's issues stem from being manipulated by Jeremiah and the Uzai family. Hopefully he learns to be his own person sometime. I already like a lot of his character so I'd love to see an arc about him :]

Hi! I really like how informative San’s future Spouse reading is. I was wondering if you could do the same kind of reading for Joshua from Seventeen’s future spouse reading? I’ve alway wanted if he would marry a regular foreigner, another Kpop idol, or foreigner celebrity or a regular Korean person. And i wonder what the marriage will be like and how he will be like as a husband? Thank you in advance if you do this request - 🧜🏽‍♀️
Joshua Hong tarot reading - who is his future spouse?
Tumblr media
-> member of K-POP group Seventeen. through tarot, he told me the characteristics of his future spouse, this is how I interpreted those messages.
-> do I have his energy permission to do and share this reading? page of swords
Tumblr media
personality
a hopeless romantic, sweet and kind, loves to daydream and play with animals. i think they have gone through difficult mental health period and now they use their experiences to help those who need and have big confidence boost. they love animals, may specially like cats or really big dogs. this person may feel like a soulmate for joshua! they may be both dreaming of having someone like the other, even if they haven't met yet, love at first sight, I think. they're probably cute and sweet in public and only sexy if they're in privacy. may be into vintage vibe or lifestyle (mostly 50-70s) and mostly listens to rock music, I think? may look more intimidating than they actually are, maybe dark eye makeup, chains and teased hair (that is trendy in korea currently, doesn't surprise me). they're probably skinny but physically active, like someone that exercises to maintain their weight and body type.
Tumblr media
career and fame
i think he doesn't wanna marry a celebrity and, with the king of swords, he probably wants to be the main provider in the relationship.
his person probably helps those with emotional needs, helps people learn and accept reality; they're likely to be a lawyer or a judge and, less likely but still possible, a psychiatrist.
Tumblr media
foreigner?
the chariot, justice, 4 of pentacles reversed, queen of swords reversed
they might be legally and ethnically a Korean, born to korean parents, but moved elsewhere for their career or school. probably somewhere with hot sun, mostly tanned and/or black people, I'm getting a sense of South America or deserted places in Africa, mostly the first tho because I think they currently have opposite timezones, because I am getting messages of sun and moon in the cards.
if they already know each other, they likely don't talk as much - this might be someone he knows from school and they lost contact because of life, but will end up crossing paths again because they're just perfect for each other. alternatively, they were in a relationship and broke up because of distance, but miss each other, idk.
Tumblr media
joshua as a husband
he glows as a husband! that's a big dream of his probably and he definitely wants children, at least 2. he is a jealous partner, because he thinks his environment has too many good looking and nice dudes, so he wants to protect his person from possible different opportunities. he looks like a gentleman, treating this person like they're his entire world, he would flirt and treat them even after a long time, he would never fall out of love and just never let things fall in routine. he'd be playful and make them feel like they're 2 children living inside a mattress fortress they built. he'd do anything for them, make their dreams come true no matter how difficult they may look. like I said, he probably wants to be the main provider and gift giving seems to be an important love language of his, he'd give them all this expensive stuff just because he thinks they'd look nice and they deserve the best, I guess it's about quality over quantity for him, but he definitely wants quantity too. at the point they get married, he'd rather stay home with his family than going out to party and he'd love to do just that, laugh his future spouse and his future children seems like one of his biggest dreams.
>n< very cute

I was wondering if you like the emphasis on the relationship between macaque n wukong. In which it seem its more prevalent in lmk? We dont know what happened but considering how much its push towards us the audience then say the actual messy relationship wukong has w dbk.
Like in the novel we see so much of wukong interesting relationship with dbk n his family yet its seem greatly downplay in lmk?? Lmk sure do a lot of liberty w jttw but it does seem the brotherhood of dbk n swk is not as important. Especially when dbk n the other sages was basically swk first found family swk had besides his monkey fam n puti.
Like even dbk has his version of a giant monster form (just a giant white bull w sharp teeth) i cant recall but very few characters has that ability in the novel..it just well kinda off putting to see it b well put on a back burner when it can b put as like sort of foil for mk n red boy. Sorry if this became a little bit of ramble
No worries about rambling anon it's always fun to hear people's opinions about monkeys both mythological, real, and lego :). And sadfasdfsa I have joked before about how it seems Macaque wasn't content with stealing Sun Wukong's entire identity so he snatched the Demon Bull King's backstory too. But in all honestly (HATER OPINIONS AHOY SO AVERT THINE EYES IF YOU DON'T WANT TO READ SUCH THINGS) I'm getting increasingly annoyed at the way Flying Bark & the fandom keeps shoving the relationship between Sun Wukong & the Six Eared Macaque to the forefront to the exclusion of like literally everything else in the lego show, especially with the way it keeps getting framed as yet another example of why SWK is a horrible person (monkey king is pretty relentlessly characterized as the guy who ruins Everything) even with this weird insistence that the two monkeys HAVE to completely reconcile and they HAVE to become each other's most important person ever even though SWK in all honestly doesn't seem to care that much about LEMH unless he's going out of his way to hurt SWK's actual loved ones & LEMH seems to have been so violently obsessed with SWK that he has literally no identity outside of his burning hatred to get one over on the monkey king. I've said this elsewhere, but one of the things that I really liked about the relationship between SWK and the Demon Bull King in the og classic is that even while they were obviously very important to each other and even though the shattering of their once rock-strong friendship is presented as a tragedy they BOTH have a lot of stuff defining them as unique individuals outside of each other. As you noted anon, Monkie Kid may have started with the Demon Bull Family as the central villains but it's been pulling away from that more and more & putting more and more emphasis on the Six Eared Macaque and strangely enough that does mirror some elements of JTTW in a weird way because og classic DBK and Princess Iron Fan wouldn't have even started anything with the pilgrim group if they hadn't had put out that fire with PIF's magical palm leaf fan; they're two yao who seem to have been pretty content to rule over their corners of the earth & not get super involved with everyone else's drama. Hell, DBK even calls time-out on one of his fights with SWK because he wants to go attend a party hosted by his dragon friends! That really doesn't speak to a yao who's all that concerned with killing SWK no matter what because of feelings of betrayal. Red Boy is of course a completely different story because he deliberately went after the Tang monk, & then everything that went down with him gave his parents even more of a reason to go after SWK when he asks for the palm leaf fan. But either way DBK was SWK's closest sworn brother and he does indeed get captured by heaven because he allows his newly-formed burning hatred against the monkey king to completely overtake him, but all signs point to him having a very rich and involved life outside of his relationship to the monkey king, and even in Monkie Kid he now seems much more interested in spending time with his family and improving his relationship with his son than in conquering anything or getting revenge on SWK. Personally I think that could make DBK a pretty interesting foil to LEMH in a kind of "dude who ruined his life because he can't/won't move forward vs. dude who almost ruined his life for the same reason but he's trying to live more in the present and is much happier for it" kind of way. And YEA hard agree anon I would love an arc starring SWK, Qi Xiaotian, Red Boy, and DBK that ends with something like "maybe we'll never forgive each other my once-dearest friend. But at least our kids can be happy in each other's company the way we once were."
Also yea it would really and truly be a massive L for everyone is Flying Bark doesn't take advantage of the fact that both SWK & DBK canonically have gigantic war forms that seem to be just as powerful as each other. Like come ON give us the gargantuan white bull with swords for teeth & the 3-headed six-armed monkey colossus!!!

Oxbow Interview: Falsely Simple
Tumblr media
BY JORDAN MAINZER
I get the sense that after all these years, the artistic collaboration among members of Oxbow is all but intuitive. The San Francisco experimental rock band, started as an offshoot from Palo Alto hardcore band Whipping Boy, has been making genre-averse noise music since 1989. Starting with the abrasive and bleak Fuckfest and culminating with the comparatively subdued and soulful Love's Holiday (Ipecac) released earlier this year, the Eugene Robinson-fronted band have developed an artistic voice over eight records that's cohesive in spirit and approach even if not always in sound. Whether they're working with no wave poets like Lydia Lunch, legendary vocalists like Marianne Faithfull, or full-on orchestras, Oxbow toys with space and raw emotion, focusing on the oft-uncomfortable relationship between silence and screams. All the while, Robinson sings about life, love, addiction, death, suicide, and violence, inspired by moments in his life but left ambiguous enough for listener interpretation.
Yet, it's that second in the list--love--that upon a surface listen, you might not hear on many Oxbow records. Sure, you can't really understand what Robinson is saying at all on early albums, let alone singing about. The band's longtime label Hydra Head did not, in their early pre-Internet days, send lyrics books along with the records themselves. But according to Robinson, love's always been a key component of Oxbow. What's new on Love's Holiday is the sonic and thematic clarity with which Robinson and the band dive in. "It's falsely simple sounding stuff," bassist Dan Adams told me over the phone earlier this year, "especially for people expecting Oxbow to be dirty and grimy and noisy." At the time of our conversation, before the album was released, Adams was unsure how fans and critics would receive it. It's gotten rave reviews from both per usual, and it seems like it could even be a gateway record for people not used to Oxbow or abrasive music in general.
The band put together and recorded the basic tracks for Love's Holiday just before the pandemic; they wouldn't see each other for a year and a half before returning to the record. During the pandemic, guitarist Niko Wenner suffered an injury, joblessness, and the death of multiple family members, including his father. He also had his second child. While Love's Holiday is by no means about these events or even directly inspired by them, you can hear the confused interplay between grief and joy throughout, as manifested by the instrumentation. Robinson's quintessentially pained bellows, Wenner's slurred blues guitars, and Greg Davis' pummeling drums rub elbows with elements with traditionally lighter timbres, like orchestral instrumentation and choral vocals. Kristin Hayter (fka Lingua Ignota) lends her voice to "Lovely Murk", embedding itself among Davis' deliberations, Adams' wiry bass, and shimmering synthesizers. A 15-person choir features on piano ballad "All Gone" and "Gunwale", the perfect juxtaposition to Robinson's baritone and Wenner's distortion, respectively. Don't get me wrong: Love's Holiday is an Oxbow album through and through, with a song like "The Second Talk" and its choppy rhythms and back-and-forth vocalizations reminiscent of back catalog highlights. But it feels like by being forthright, Robinson and company have become the truest versions of themselves.
Oxbow are in the middle of a West Coast tour celebrating Love's Holiday, playing San Francisco's Great American Music Hall tonight and finishing Sunday at Mohawk in Austin. When I spoke to Adams earlier this year, the band was rehearsing, figuring out how they'd adopt the songs to the stage. Their approach wasn't much different this time around: "Practice them a bunch, get on stage, and play them," Adams quipped. In reality, the challenge is stripping down the songs, "taking advantage of the space and sparsity," according to Adams. "It really is a fairly stripped down record in terms of what's going on," Adams said. In essence, they're doing to the studio recordings what Love's Holiday built on from previous Oxbow records: emphasizing the subtleties and the depth of Robinson's voice.
Below, read my conversation with Adams, edited for length and clarity.
Tumblr media
Since I Left You: How do you think Love's Holiday is unique as compared to your previous albums, and how do think it's a continuation of them?
Dan Adams: We were freer to give in to the sparsity and simplicity more than we have ever in the past. Yesterday, I listened to a couple of more recent records, and these are cleaner, simpler songs. One thing I really enjoy about that is they put the voice so far up front in terms of the quality of voice and the timbre and emotional content. It's much more exposed than the records have been in the past. I think that's a great thing.
It's very consistent with what we've done in terms of being a fairly transparent expression of emotional material. It's intense. It's complex, I guess, but...in ways that are much more subtle. It's a sensible trajectory from The Narcotic Story and Thin Black Duke. I don't think any of us in the band feel like our trajectories are a one-way pass. [laughs] I think we've always enjoyed doing what feels right at the time we made the music and following our whims and where we are in life, and so on. It's the music we were making at the time, as Niko was writing songs and we were hashing them out in the practice room. It's impossible to predict what the next round of material will be like, although in this particular session, we recorded a whole bunch more music at the same time, so we probably have another record using the material from the same process, which will also be pretty fun. Some of those songs are kind of similar, and some are very different even though they come from the same genesis.
SILY: Does the voice being more upfront on Love's Holiday place a greater emphasis on the lyrics?
DA: That's an interesting question. I think the lyrical content has always been extremely important and a driving factor. I also know Eugene has said quite a bit that he's intentionally written much less, much sparser lyrics for this record. In a way, you could say that's emphasizing what is there. On the other hand, I think it comes down to how the lyrics are delivered, and how well you can hear them. How clearly they're delivered by Eugene [and] how much space the band leaves for those lyrics. I think it's really up to the listener how much work they want to do to find out what the lyrics are about. In some of the older records, it was hard to figure out. In some cases, there were records that came out years before our lyrics books were published where people couldn't figure out what the lyrics were. In this case, they're both available and easier to hear.
SILY: In the lead up to the release of Love's Holiday, Eugene has talked about how the band has always written "love songs," so these themes shouldn't come as a surprise to anybody. But in the context of what you just said, that the lyrics in the past were less physically accessible, it might seem like a newfound theme to a lot of folks.
DA: Yes. I think that's right. Eugene's described it as trying to lay it out there and make it obvious after so many years of people not getting it. My interpretation is that because the music has at times been pretty strong, noisy, loud, big, and dissonant, things we've enjoyed and continue to enjoy folding into it, it's almost like typecasting. People hear that and assume that's the element being conveyed in the lyrics. There's complexity and subtlety. These are not simple topics, and Eugene [was frustrated] that people weren't doing the work to understand and find it. So this is a time to make it a little bit more obvious and tell people in advance what we're doing. That's what Thin Black Duke was about as well: short-circuiting people's assumptions about what our record was going to be like and explaining to people what we're doing rather than having people use the old simplistic interpretations of what we're about.
SILY: During the making of Love's Holiday, Niko had a child but also suffered the loss of multiple family members. Can you recall a time when something familial that has happened in a band member's life has contextualized a record as much as his life changes did for this one?
DA: I think so. We've been at this a long time. Everybody's had major things happening in their lives that have directly affected records. First marriages for several people before the seconds, kids at various stages showing up, parents dying, and so on. What's probably more important is how as everybody's gone through this and gotten older, we've interpreted [life events] as they come. Similar [events] might mean different things to you at different phases of your life. It's a continuum.
Certainly, if you hear Eugene talk about the first record, that was very much about very intense things going on in his life. That was part of the whole reason for the existence of the band. It shows where our heads are at the time: If we're in a different place, we're going to make different music.
Tumblr media
SILY: You've talked about how working with Joe Chiccarelli for the third record in a row has provided a consistency to allow you to be freer. Do you have specific examples of where the continuity allows for that freedom?
DA: We've felt the freedom to trust Joe more to make decisions and follow his lead. On the first record with him, there was a lot more tension. We weren't as comfortable relinquishing control of certain things. We've always had a pretty heavy hand on everything we make. It's been a great thing to allow what we make to be shaped more by his reaction to it, to allow him to be contributing ideas and getting the hell out of the control room and letting him do his thing. [laughs] He's learned a lot more about what we're about. For some reason, he's been very interested in what we do and very respectful of it. He's internalized it more and been able to take it and run with it. That doesn't mean he's written half the songs and done a whole bunch of stuff like a lot of producers do. If you listen to our rehearsal recordings as we've figured stuff out, it's fairly similar. But some of his little ideas about what sounds [good] here and what sounds [good] there, where to change the mix or drop a beat or cut a section out, he's got great sensibilities. We were very happy to follow his lead in a lot of cases.
SILY: At what point during the process did you decide to hone in on what I hear as one of the main sonic trends in the record, the choral singing?
DA: Our drummer Greg suggested we use voices instead of the orchestration we had been using on some of the earlier records. It was after a show we played at Supersonic Festival in Birmingham in 2017, where the promoters had talked with Niko and had the idea. They've always liked Oxbow doing special things for that festival. Niko had been thinking about choir stuff, and they asked us to put one together and perform with a choir. It was very difficult but very fun: a really great experience and interesting show. I think it made it clear that would be something very fun to explore. It wasn't a huge leap to decide to put choir back in the songs. It had been brewing for the past 4-5 years.
SILY: How did you come to work with Kristin Hayter on "Lovely Murk"?
DA: That's a good question. I don't know who got in touch with her or don't remember. Either Niko or Eugene, I think. [Maybe] Joe suggested it.
SILY: Were you aware of her before working with her?
DA: I was not. I find myself disappointingly out of touch with a lot of great music happening right now. I need new avenues to find this stuff. I don't search for music a lot on the Internet. When I explore, I usually listen to a couple really good local radio stations, but it's up to what they play and what I hear.
SILY: The band includes many instruments on "Dead Ahead" that contain interpersonal context or tributes to people that have since passed: instruments from loved ones who have passed, guitars Niko uses to play for his kids, even a toy piano you gave to Niko's kids. Were these inclusions a conscious starting point for that song, or was it something you decided on after the fact?
DA: I don't think there was any conscious thought. I'm guessing [Niko] was just playing around with it and happened to be using it at the time and went back to it. It's very consistent with how we've approached sounds we make: immediate inspiration, not too deeply thought out, grab something that's there because it seems like the right thing. If I had to guess--I'm interpreting how Niko works, since we haven't talked exclusively about this stuff ever--he envisions a lot of sounds in his head, sound qualities, timbre. He might be consciously aware there's a certain instrument he has in mind he wants to use, or it might be a subconscious thing to pick up the same instrument. He has a couple guitars he's had for years he still uses when playing in his house and working on new ideas. Nothing new there, I think.
Tumblr media
SILY: Can you talk about the visual identity of the record?
DA: It's been a great process. The last record was the first for which we made any videos, because it seemed like they were getting more important for how people consume and find music. In that case, we contacted a few people and basically said, "We'll buy you a plane ticket to come over, we don't have much other money to support it, but pitch us an idea, and if we like it, we'll make a video." That worked with the videos with Chris Purdie. This time around, Eugene or Niko--I can't remember--felt it would be important to make videos for everything. We needed to figure out how to do it without bankrupting ourselves more than we usually do. We sent enquiries out to a bunch of people and asked them to propose what they might do for songs, and if we thought there was a chance it would turn out well, we said, "You're on." We paid people what we could, which wasn't a lot, but we let the directors drive [the entirety of] the content. They're very different. As all of them come out, it will be apparent how different they are. It was a great experience to see people give us finished products that were really surprising. It's been a really wonderful added creative process to participate in, to get that kind of feedback from others to see their visions.
SILY: What about the cover art? Did you give Aaron Turner the same leeway?
DA: Yes. He's worked with us enough where he understands our process and is willing to keep us in the process. In this case, he developed quite a few proposals, and there was too much back and forth as we tried to settle on what we wanted to use. He was extremely patient. Sometimes, our process is convoluted, inefficient, and painful. But he hung in there and developed a bunch of ideas till there was something we all thought was cool. All of his ideas are great. He's a very broad thinker as a visual artist and comes up with great artwork. In this case, the variety in ways made it harder to choose, so it took us a long time to settle on one piece of art.
SILY: What's next for the band?
DA: Trying to stay alive and keep doing what we do. We're always working in the now even if the now is a span of five years. We're focusing on what's on our plates. There's no grand elaborate scheme for where it's all going to go. Time changes all of our lives enough between records that it's probably good that way. Following, rather than leading, I guess, is a good way to put that. Circumstances drive what we do rather than setting a path.

mk after getting dumped back into the "listen to the amazing devil way to much each day" phase, i gotta finally share my interpretations(analysis maybe?) of The Horror and the Wild Album. i'm gonna line the song youtube in the title of each song so that you can listen to it if you haven't heard it!
It's a little wordvomit-ty so be warned, this is gonna be a long one.
everything's below the cut!
Overall, the whole album seems to be about relationships of some sort and feelings for others (not necessarily the romantic kind!). I've seen other people say it's about love n stuff like that too so.
The Rockrose and the Thistle
Starting off with the plants in the title!
Cistus, or as we know it here, Rock Rose, is known to have certain medicinal properties! It can help with healing small external cuts and also help uplift your mood. Also, Rock Rose is said to symbolize strength, most likely because of its hardiness.
In terms of its properties, Thistle is also pretty good for your health, including being good for the immune system and bone health. As for its meaning, Thistle also seems to represent strength and courage.
Something probably unrelated but interesting I noticed while looking for information on both plants is that they both can be found in Mediterranean countries
Right off the bat, there's no "music". To me, it sounds more like winds howling at the top of a cliff or something, which fits with the first few lyrics "When you call to me asleep // up the ragged cliffs I scramble".
"A single thread hangs limply down // and I breathe not now, not now // and I find you all unwoven // trying desperately to sew // and I know the kindest thing is to leave you alone"
This song sounds like the narrator has just found someone they love grieving. Whether they are grieving a loved one, or perhaps the loss of a piece of themself, they are grieving and it isn't pretty per se. They're falling apart and the narrator doesn't know how to give comfort to this person, or the person isn't receptive to it. Despite all that, the narrator will stick by this person's side "and you'll wail, you'll scream, but I'll never stop // 'Cause it's all that I have left"
Then, "I wake and hear you calling // and up those cliffs I climb // and I find you with a thimble weeping // May I, I ask, may I?" The narrator is now being let into the person's walls, the next lines have the person give the narrator the thimble " 'Cause you've no clue how to sew" to sew them back together.
The Rock Rose and Thistle both symbolize strength, endurance, loyalty, and such, this song, to me, is about that exactly. Grief and loss are terrible to try to get through, but it's easier if you have someone you trust to help pull you back together.
The Horror and the Wild
I am normal about this song(lie). I have always listened to this song and thought of it as becoming more than what was expected of you. Being better than the adults in your life as a child thought you to be. It's the coming back to old family members who belittled you for something or another and showing them how you were successful not because of them, but because of your own strengths. It's being better than the things people say behind your back. ANyway, to the actual song.
"They thought us blind (we were just blinking) // All the stones and kings of old will hear us screaming at the cold"
"Think of all the horrors that I // Promised you I'd bring // I promise you, they'll sing of every // Time you passed your fingers through my hair and called me child // witness me, old man, I am the Wild"
These parts feel a lot like the realization that those people didn't believe in you, and the anger towards them that they thought so little of you. "How bold I was, could be - will be -- still am, by god, still am" You were strong before, you are strong now. Everyone is strong and the fact that you can't stand up against people sometimes doesn't make you weak.
"Welcome to the storm, I am thunder // Welcome to my table, bring your hunger"
This is someone standing up for their younger self. This is someone saying that they are more than just their parent's child. This is the dinner scene from Arcane where Jinx shows that she isn't Powder anymore.
Wild Blue Yonder
The lyrics for this one are hard because they intertwine so often.
"Without you(you) I'm stronger(you told me I was younger) I'm no longer (that I was) // Filled with wonder // How wrong you were"
I love how this song sounds more like a conversation at times. We start off with what sounds like reminiscing on old selves/relationships/conversations. Almost like laughing at how absurd things seemed years later.
"Let's wander, till the fuckers demand an encore // Flirting (wasn't flirting) // At the back of a bookshop // Come and rip off my socks like you're blasting the locks off of a bank vault. // Halt! // This time we're done for"
It's hurried love, love that both partners know won't last but are having fun indulging in. Like a little summer fling or something. The song is upbeat and fun sounding but there is an air of melancholy. The Greek word for love, Ludus, fits perfectly. It's a playful love.
There are parts of the song that sound genuinely affectionate or have that "falling in love" feel, almost turning the overall feel into a falling in love with your summer fling and just wanting to have a good time now so you won't regret it later.
The overlapping and talking over each other adds to the sense of unfamiliarity, but there's enough flow to show that they aren't complete strangers
Welly Boots
Welly Boots! Basically, they're just rain boots from what I gathered (correct me if I'm wrong). The beginning of the song talks about an oncoming storm and someone who has lost their welly boots.
"What's it like, the children ask? // It's just like falling snow, I am above you, // And I love you, don't you know // That I'll be with you all along, as long as you are kind // To those who are not strong and cannot find their scarlet welly boots"
I've always attributed this song to losing someone. Not necessarily loss as in death, but it could be a friendship that fell apart, the strained relationship between a once happy family. Any kind of loss.
"If only you could hear my voice // But you are screaming far too loud to hear me swear // Just because I left doesn't mean that I'm not still there"
All of our relationships affect us in some way. The impact of a relationship doesn't go away just because that relationship is gone. Pieces of those people and those relationships stick with us.
"And when you scream I’m not alright // And throw my picture at the wall // ‘You were supposed to be my light // And keep me safe against them all // How could you leave me here' you’ll scream // And louder, I’ll scream back to you from that unknown // And say // I know you’re strong enough to do this on your own"
This is the part that makes me attribute this song to loss. When someone you are close to leaves you, things may feel hopeless. The screaming back from the unknown that you are strong helps some people keep moving. To get back up and move forward. Moving forward doesn't mean forgetting.
There's a time skip in the song and the person still misses the person they lost. They feel hopeless again but
"Just when you're about to give up every hope you have you turn around // Perches by the stairs, someone's gone and left behind // A brand new pair of scarlet welly boots"
Welly boots are lost in the beginning of the song, introducing the loss. But welly boots are lost or left behind at the end only to be found by someone else. I can't really decide if "you can help others that are experiencing loss to help heal" is actually what I get from that, but it's what I'm going with for now. It calls back to the beginning also with "as long as you are kind //To those who are not strong and cannot find their scarlet welly boots".
I also love the beat drop after "Just because I left doesn't mean that I'm not still--" [Guitar and Drums kick in] "--there" Its completely unexpected when first listening to the song because it's so mellow and from the Rockrose and the Thistle we know the Amazing Devil isn't afraid to do a whole song that's mellow and practically a monologue.
Farewell Wanderlust
This song is filled with stuff about self-love, or the lack thereof. Self-loathing, bad anxiety, imposter syndrome.
"You don’t know it yet, but I’m the cupid of things // That you just didn’t get, that you struggled to say"
"Every time that you fumble, I’m the laugh from the back // When you think about him, my wings start to flap // When you make a mistake, my feet lift from the floor // And when you lie there awake every night love, I soar"
Every time there's a mistake, they start to feel good about themself, they feel like they might fit in, there's a voice in the back of their mind that says they aren't good enough. This is a struggle with self-worth and trying to convince yourself you're good enough.
"Farewell Wanderlust, you’ve been oh oh so kind // You brought me to this party but you left me here behind"
The wanderlust blocks out the anxiety, the self-loathing, and such, allowing you to do something without overthinking it, but when the high from wanderlust wears out, everything else creeps back in. Panic, anxiety. People ask the person if they're alright in the song, and at the first opportunity, they leave even if it might seem rude.
"I promise you I’m not broken // I promise you there’s more"
Welcome to the turning point of the song. The stomping down the anxiety, battling back against the hatred. This is saying I am more than this.
"Goodbye to all my darkness, there’s nothing here but light // Adieu to all the faceless things that sleep with me at night // This here isn’t makeup, it’s a porcelain tomb //This here is not singing, I’m just screaming in tune"
I love the last few lines of that quote so much. I love the "I'm not singing, I'm screaming in tune" because it feels like it's saying this is my story, I am screaming out my feelings even if they don't fully make sense.
Fair
The way this song feels like a letter to a loved one pouring your feelings out because you can't articulate them. Because you struggle to be sure of yourself, but you're so sure of them.
"And he adores her, he watches her get dressed as though she’s hurtling through time // Oh darling please be mine"
Have you ever fallen in love with your best friend? Yeah. This song feels like that. The growing up together and not noticing when exactly it happens, but eventually realize that you could just, exist in their presence forever.
"Oh how oh how unreasonable // How unreasonably in love I am with everything you do"
Send this song to the best friend you're in love with challenge!
There are so many small lyrics that just scream best friends. The jokes, the being comfortable with each other.
"I’ll spend my days so close to you cos if I’m stood here // Then I’m stood here // And I’ll stand here // I’ll stand here with you"
Back to just being able to exist in their presence. Yeah. This is Philla, the Greek word for love that involves friendship. Friends to Lovers type beat. This is staring at someone and smiling and deciding that this is the person you're going to love.
That Unwanted Animal
The stark contrast between this song and Fair is mind-blowing. Everything clues me into thinking that this is an unhealthy relationship, toxic love, and just generally obsessive love. The imagery is violent most of the time and the animal is fear-inducing.
"You try so loud to love me // But I cannot seem to hear."
It sounds like a relationship that no longer is love. As the song goes on, things get more and more negative, then "the creature creeps inside"
"The scratching grows so loud // Because that unwanted animal // Wants nothing more than to get out"
I would say that the creature, the animal, is the unspoken feelings of both the people in the relationship. It's clawing its way between them, things are unpleasant.
"Be good to me I beg of him ... // ... And he replies 'no no, not I'"
In short, the relationship isn't great. As the song progresses from the beginning, things get more and more negative, violent, and toxic.
Marbles
"I’ve held your hand since nineteen seventy nine, // You were in a band - still am - yeah but back then you had hair and your smile was so sublime // And I chipped my teeth on every joke you cracked"
This is an aging love. Growing old together but still loving each other and having fun. There's so much banter in this song, but so much affection. People changing together and poking fun at each other but still finding each other attractive. That's what makes this song beautiful. It's like hearing about someone's parents or grandparents who still very much love each other.
"The flat we rented was a palace for my queen // If by palace you mean that asbestos and beans from a tin, and the gin that we brewed in the bathtub // You sang ‘do you think I’m sexy’ And oh god I really did."
"And I'd sink to the floor, what’s the point anymore, // And you, you’d reply with a glint in your eye // (And you, you’d reply with a drink in your hand) // Saying ‘I don’t know, but I’m here, I’m all yours, dear heart don’t cry’"
We get playful, we get caring and loving. This song has it all. It's like reminiscing while sitting on your roof to watch the sunset. I love the familiarity of it.
Battle Cries
For our last song, I'm starting with a line from the middle of the song.
"This isn’t a break up dear heart, it’s a season finale."
It's a breakup song. Not in the typical sense of a "breakup song" where they're salty and stuff, but rather they've figured out that they're better just as friends.
There's so much these two people have gone through together, they're happy with each other, but not in the romantic sense. There's a lot of reassurance and uplifting in this song.
Along with the platonic love, I also see it as two people who have been through a lot, finding comfort in each other
"But that creaking you hear in my bones is not pain, it’s applause"

Knight, anything you’d like to say about the champions? Or just Diantha and Geeta if you don’t want to do all 🎤🎤🎤
Ough the Dia and Geeta brainrot is so real but I really should write more stuff abt the champions too, but still tho, Dia/Geeta would probs have more stuff here hope that's cool uvu" hahaha
Anyways ouo
•Geeta def caught a Carbink for Diantha for her 18th bday as a gift
-Dia cried like no shit and thanked Geeta for it, saying "this is the best gift I ever got, thank you, ma lune ;A;"
"mi sol, you're,, you're kinda holding them a bit too tight—"
"I'll take care of them I promise ;A;"
-she wanted to name it Diancie, after her own lil Carbink who she lost, but she knows it's for the best she doesn't
-since then Diantha is always seen around w Carbink following besides her, making a promise to herself that she's really gonna take care of it, she's not gonna fail this Carbink too
•That Carbink honest to god hates Leon just as much as Diantha does and it's really no surprise
-the champions visit Kalos this time, Leon meets Diantha's Carbink, said Carbink used Rock Slide (a weak one don't worry) on him and he's all "what the hell?!"
"oh, sorry, they don't do well with strangers"
"I've been here ten separate times how am I still a stranger?!"
"maybe he just doesn't like you"
•anyways speaking of Leon and Dia, do you see my vision when I say that they're the most ♠️ coded pairing in my hcs (the Homestuck girlies will understand this hahah)
-like, the song I Can See You TV by Taylor Swift? That's Dia and Leon's song right there
•since Cynthia and Lance both like Dia in my hcs, I wanna imagine them like fighting for her attention maybe hahah
-like yknow trying to one up each other
-Geeta actually helps Cynthia, telling her the stuff Diantha likes so Cynthia would have the upper hand
-Steven helps Lance out bc he honestly pities him at this point—
-Iris and Hau helps Cynthia bc ofc they would, they've had enough of her gay ramblings everytime they play Orrecraft together
-Wallace just wants to see how long will it take for Diantha to actually notice bc as smart as she is, she's really really really fucking dense when it comes to someone liking her romantically
•yknow w that, I do wanna add that Diantha really has troubles on figuring out romantic love more than anything
-bc for one, she grew up watching the marriage of her parents fall apart
-two, she's an actress, she sees all the drama regarding celebrity romance all the time, sees what happens behind the cameras and how those relationships seems and are fake
-so hey, the only stable relationship she ever had in her life is the familial one w her brother and the platonic one w Geeta
-tbh she's really scared to actually have a legit romantic relationship w anyone, she thinks it's gonna end up like her parents' relationship and it'll get messy, and she'd rather die than to become like any of them, driven by bitterness and anger over the other bc of a miscommunication
-she does want to try to have a romantic relationship w someone tho, she really does, but it's that fear that's holding her back from doing so, and since bc she's so used to platonic love, and since Geeta is also that affectionate towards her, she thinks Lance and Cynthia's advances towards her are just them being nice the same way Geeta is
•the Diantha brainrot is so real isn't it, anyways yeah Diantha loves musicals but she doesn't sing that much
-Wallace has a really good singing voice but he almost never sings too
-Hau would often prompt them to sing whatever they want when he brings along his Primarina, saying that even if they're off key, it's fun to sing w friends around
-so the more Hau brings his Primarina, the more Wallace and Diantha would sing w them too
-Geeta just loves hearing Dia's voice, and even brought along a Skeledirge one time and the two pkmn had a lil concert of their own
•yknow since they do have lil champions meetups and such, imagine if they all have that one region they don't like visiting hahah
-Lance doesn't like visiting Paldea for obvious reasons, he also doesn't like to visit Alola that much bc of the weather. He doesn't understand how Geeta and Cynthia could wear all that black under the Alolan sun
-Steven doesn't like visiting Kanto and Unova that much, he does like going to Sinnoh tho
-Wallace doesn't like Sinnoh at all, altho Hearthome is a good venue for contests, he just doesn't like how that region is so,, mountainous
-Cynthia hates Kanto but likes Johto, she will never admit that to Lance since she actually likes visiting Blackthorn
-Iris doesn't like the vibes in Kalos, she just puts up w it for Diantha. Majority of the people she meets there are low-key elitists, and even Diantha admits they are and she also doesn't like them
-Diantha hates going to Galar and if anything she'd try to make up excuses to not join champion meetups when it's set in that region
-Hau doesn't really hate any of the regions, he just hates it when they stay at a cold place like Icirrus, Snowpoint, Snowbelle, etc
-Leon hates Kalos but for different reasons, he has to admit tho the food there is amazing, desserts especially
-Geeta doesn't like going to Hoenn, and also hates going to Kanto/Johto for obvious reasons too hahah

Lucas, Dustin and I take our seats once we get to class.
"Oh, that can't be good." I sigh, gesturing to Mike's empty seat.
"Yeah, he's never this late," Dustin added.
"I'm telling you, his stupid plan failed," Lucas stated.
"I thought you liked his plan?"
"Yeah, but obviously it's stupid, or he'd be here."
"If his mom found out a girl spent the night—" Dustin began.
"He's in deep shit right about now."
Dustin shifted in his seat, and leaned forward, whispering loud enough for us to hear. "Hey, what if she slept naked?"
"Ugh!" My face screws into a sour, disgusted look aimed at my brother, unintentionally speaking at the same time as Lucas. "Why would she do that, Dustin?"
"Oh, my God, she didn't."
"Oh, if Mrs. Wheeler tells our parents..."
The thought of Mom finding out was enough to elicit an anxious groan from me, and I let my forehead fall against desk where I buried my face.
"No way. Mike would never rat us out."
I hesitantly looked up, making eye contact with Lucas. He gave me a reassuring smile, knowing I worry easily.
"I don't know." Dustin said warily.
"All that matters is, after school, the freak will be back in the loony bin, and we can focus on what really matters, finding Will." I frown at his specific choice of words for El, thinking back on how scared she seemed last night. I desperately want to say something, but decided against it, not wanting to get in a fight. Fighting won't get us any closer to finding Will.

Mike Wheeler rides his bike down the small slope of grass towards his front yard. When El refused to let Mike's mom know she was there, Mike had no choice but to resort to plan b. He had led his mom to believe that he had ridden to school when in reality he had stopped around the corner until both his parents were gone.
When he got to the driveway, he dismounted his bike and led it into the garage, however something caught his eye. He stared in awe as the once withered and frankly the most miserable looking plant he had ever seen in his life, was now a beautiful lush green and stood as tall his knees. 'How had Y/n done it?'
It took a solid moment for Mike to gather his thoughts and focus on the task at hand. He parked his bike and made his way inside.
⊹ ⊹ ⊹
"You want anything to drink?" Mike decided to take advantage of the empty house so that he could show El around. "We have OJ, skim milk... What else? Um, we have..."
Mike trailed off when he saw that El was more fascinated with the things in his living room, mostly his TV set.
"Oh, this is my living room. It's mostly just for watching TV."
El lightly traced her fingers around the frame of the TV as she examined it.
"Nice, right? It's a 22-inch.
That's, like, ten times bigger than Dustin's."
El turned her head and said quietly.
"Y/n."
"Well, yeah of course. Y/n too."
"Y/n. Brother?" She asked, making sure she remembered correctly.
"Yeah!" Mike smiled, then lightly shrugged. "Well, technically adopted. But yeah, they're still brothers."
El's brows furrowed in confusion.
"Ad-adopted?"
"Yeah, um, it means that he came from different parents. Mrs. Henderson adopted him because his parents were unable to take care of him. It's funny actually, Y/n is from Hawkins. Or at least that's where they found him. They didn't used to live in Hawkins; I don't know much about it cause Dustin was so young he doesn't remember any of it, but I think him and his mom were visiting family here and they just... found him, I think? I'm pretty sure that's why they moved here, or something."
El seemed to understand as she thought about it. She then turned to look at the all the pictures on top of the fireplace. She slowly walks to the fireplace and steps up onto the brick platform. She gazes at all the family photos. Particularly, the photo beside the one of Mike; of a smiling girl, a little older than herself, with long brown hair and a pink sweater.
She smiles longingly and speaks in a soft voice. "Pretty."
"I guess." Mike's face is contorted in confusion and a little in disgust.
"That's my sister Nancy. And that's baby Holly." He said as she moved to the slightly larger photo of a young baby. She then moved along to a photo with Mike, Nancy, and Holly, along with two other people she didn't recognize.
"And those are my parents. What are your parents like?" As usual, El says nothing and she steps down from the fireplace and walks up to a large green chair.
"Do they live close?" Mike continued. He notices El run her hand along the top of the plush green chair. "That's our La-Z-Boy. It's where my dad sleeps. You can try it if you want." He offers. El looked up at him, intrigued. "Yeah." He assured her, with a warm smile on his face. She cautiously sits down as Mike kneels down beside the chair. "It's fun!"
She looked to Mike, wondering what he is up to.
"Just trust me, okay?" She gives a quick nod, and braces herself, not knowing what to expect. She is taken aback by the sudden collapse of the chair, she is now laying down and the chair is rocking back and forth. She lets out a gasp, and then a nervous chuckle.
"See? Fun, right?"
With one hand on the back of the chair, and the other on the front, he brings the chair back into its default position. "Now you try."
With a small smile on her face, and feeling more confident she leans over the side and pulls the handle, letting her entire body go flying backward into a slow rock. Mike and El both look at each other and laugh gleefully.
⊹ ⊹ ⊹
Some random rock song on the radio that Jonathan barely recognized came to an end as Jonathan Byers drove to his dad's house. His eyes darted to the radio unit in his car for a moment as his heart fell when the familiar sound of "Should I Stay or Should I Go" rang throughout the car.
- 𝗙𝗟𝗔𝗦𝗛𝗕𝗔𝗖𝗞 -
"Darlin', you got to let me know"
Jonathan is sat on the edge of the bed next to his younger brother Will. The two of them are in Will's room, bobbing their heads along to 'Should I Stay or Should I Go' by The Clash.
"Should I stay or should I go?"
"You like it?" Jonathan had to raise his voice so he could be heard over the loud song. Will looks to his older brother and grins.
"Yeah, it's cool!"
"All right, you can keep the mix if you want."
"Really?"
"Yeah, really. All the best stuff's on there. Joy Division, Bowie, Television, The Smith's... It'll totally change your life."
"Yeah, totally," Will says with a smile. However, the smile is quick to leave when the two boys hear their mother yelling on the phone.
"Where the hell are you, Lonnie?"
Will slowly turns his head to the door, listening to his mother yell at his absent father.
"I don't want to hear it. I don't want to hear it." Jonathan mimics his brother's actions and looks to the door. Finally, he gets up and walks towards the door.
"This is ridiculous! I'm so sick of your excuses.
"One day is fine and next is black"
Before Jonathan sits down, he lowers the volume on the stereo.
"He's not coming, is he?"
"Do you even like baseball?" Jonathan asks softly.
"No, but... I don't know." He shrugs sadly. "It's fun to go with him sometimes."
"Come on. Has he ever done anything with you that you actually like? You know, like the arcade or something?"
Will shrugs his shoulders weakly. "I don't know."
"No, all right? He hasn't. He's trying to force you to like normal things. And you shouldn't like things because people tell you you're supposed to. Okay?"
Will only looks down at his feet sadly.
"Especially not him."
Will silently nods his head in understanding.
Jonathan decided to change the subject.
"But you like The Clash? For real?"
Will nods his head eagerly with a smile. "For real. Definitely."
"So... is Y/n a fan of The Clash?" Jonathan asks, genuinely curious.
A faint blush dusts Will's cheeks as he looks down at his hands. "Um, yeah, I think so."
"Maybe you should show this to him. I bet he'll like it."
"Maybe. You think?"
"Yeah, from what I know, he has great taste. He's pretty cool."
A loving smile spreads across Will's face. "Yeah, he is pretty cool."
There's a small pause filled only with the now dulled melody of drums and guitar drifting through the air. They had talked about it before, but only vaguely, never fully addressing it and it dawned on Jonathan that there was probably still loads of fear for Will because of it. He looks down at his brother who he loved more than anything and sent him an encouraging, honest smile.
"Will, you guys are best friends. You two are just too close to ruin the friendship. Why don't you think about asking him to the arcade or something? Just the two of you, maybe come back here for some mac and cheese or something if that'd make you feel safer, and you could " he shrugs. "let him know how you feel?"
Will looked up at his brother, shocked. But his body was flushed with relief, he could feel the air in the room hitting his sweaty and clammey skin giving him chills. Not quite knowing how to handle his brothers reaction, his eyes simply fall to his hands where they fidgeting in his lap.
"But what if that does ruin the friendship? What if he doesn't feel the same way, and decides to stop hanging out with me. Or if someone finds out- I just- I just can't. I'm not ready."
"That's okay. All I'm saying is, he is way too nice to be the kind of person who would do that. And you are way too important to him. And hey, if you ever do feel ready, or you guys do go out in the future..." Jonathan trails off, sensing the awkwardness creep up. He chuckles and looks back to his brother.
"All I'm trying to say is, I'm here for you. Always."
Will smiles gratefully and Jonathan leans forward to the volume back up.
"Should I stay or should I go? So you gotta let me know, should I stay or should I go?"

serim
he swears he's not trying to make this harder on you but your family keeps inviting him over for dinner and he just can't say no to them
i feel like serim is gonna have trouble functioning the first few days without you because you were genuinely such a huge part of his life and now that's gone
physically restrains himself from calling you whenever he gets any news - good or bad - bc you were always the first person he'd tell. it's instinct
i feel like with serim the decision to stay friends after the breakup or not could rly make it or break it for y'all. if getting back together isn't on the table he'd rather just be gone from your life completely. if it is tho....
probably the one to suggest getting back together tbh. he'd just rather work through whatever issue it was with you by his side
allen
too nice for his own good but i say this abt allen all the time bc it's true
but like, if things ended in a particularly nasty way (ie you cheating on him), i dont think he would think twice before setting some boundaries (nicely) and putting his own well-being first
still, is nice to you should you run into each other sometime but doesn't really wanna stay friends friends in case it makes it harder for his feelings for you to go away
throws himself into work whenever he finds himself missing you too much or longing for your old relationship. the type to try to work through this stuff on his own
i feel like getting back together could be a 50/50 chance with allen. you're never gonna know until you bring it up but if it does happen i think he'll make sure you both work to change and make it work this time
jungmo
an enigma. he seems hurt but how hurt is he? does he agree with this? does he want to get back together? is he already engaged to someone else? you're never gonna know unless you straight up ask him
if y'all decide to stay friends he is going to be a little awkward but as sweet as ever
when he truly gets over it he might even encourage you to go out there and try it with someone new! jungmo would be a wonderful ex tbh
i feel like he would just deal with this a lot better and in a healthier way than most. yea he gets sad about it but that's part of it for him, you know? he's not gonna dwell on it too much
if the chance to get back together comes up i don't think he would give it a lot of thought tbh lmfao if he misses you he'll wanna do it. if he doesn't he'll politely decline simple as that
woobin
academy award for best actor in the role of "totally okay with it when, really, he's not"
ruby is actually so good at hiding his feelings in this situation it would take a rly good set of eyes from his closest friends to notice he's actually Going Through It™
he would never be anything but nice to you but i feel like he would lowkey ignore you, at least for the first few weeks, 'cause he just doesn't know how to feel and it's a lot for him to process
gets really introspective when he's alone but not in the sense that he thinks a lot about you and the good moments you both shared - more like overanalyzing every little thing to try to figure out where things went wrong
again, doesn't really know how to feel when faced with the prospect of resuming the relationship. even tho he wouldn't rly be able to determine what went wrong, i feel like ruby would probably decide against it bc he strikes me as a "what is done is done" kind of guy
wonjin
goes into shock before getting sad as hell and claiming he's "hit rock bottom" (cue hyeongjun in the background "thats a glass of MILK wonjin")
says he doesn't care anymore and then keeps tabs on you LMFAO
feel like he would have a good ass cry abt your breakup like 3 times a week at least
if u speak to any other guy and he finds out he'll go into cardiac arrest while monologuing abt having been "replaced"
suggest getting back together tho and suddenly he'll start acting brand new like he's gonna have to think about it but if ur like alright nvm he's like NO NO WAIT I'LL DO IT
minhee
the type to keep your photos and videos together in a secret folder on his phone to look at when he's alone and missing you
but like literally deleted your number a couple of days after the breakup specifically so he wouldn't feel tempted to call you
absolutely makes a point of still being polite to you when you run into each other even if it was a nasty breakup
i feel like flashes of your lips and your most intimate moments would plague his mind when he's like trying to work or something lmfao he'd be angry as hell
will NOT even consider getting back together unless he's 100% sure the issues that led to the breakup have been thoroughly resolved
hyeongjun
SO dramatic god he will annoy everyone at the dorm and every single soul who'll listen with how much he talks about you
keeps loudly sighing around the house and slamming doors and minhee has to be like dude they're not even here stop doing that
probably gets emotional a lot and has to hold back his feelings when he's around you, so he gets noticeably quieter and teary-eyed
if u still hang out with the same mutual friends he regularly comes up to you at parties and dreamily sighs about "we did have some good times didn't we" and ur like ????
honestly probably thinks the breakup is bullshit i feel like he'd try to make up and get back together like 3 minutes into it
taeyoung
will give you the option to stay friends even if you hurt him real bad
will keep hanging out with the same friends you have in common and will be upset if you refuse to 'cause he lowkey kinda expects to still see you around
i feel like for taeyoung staying friends is gonna make things a lot easier - still seeing you, still laughing with you, still having you in his life. being cut off from your life entirely and abruptly would make the whole thing harder for him
tries not to get caught up in nostalgia and missing you and honestly actually succeeds
the idea of getting back together is lowkey always in the back of his mind. like the minute you suggest it he says yes, doesn't even have to think about it
seongmin
petty ex 🗣️
but only bc your breakup hit him harder than he'd like to admit, whoever made the decision
type to block u on all socials tbh
doesn't like to talk about it and doesn't want to hear what you've been up to and how you've been, like it will take a whiiiiile for him to open up even to his closest friends
if the idea of getting back together comes up a huge weight is gonna be lifted off his shoulders but i also feel like seongmin would need to take a few days to think about it and be sure. he doesn't want to go through this again :/

Max Goodwin and Randall Pearson: The Well-Meaning, Incredibly Self-Centered Leading Men We’ve Grown to Love.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Hey fam! Like I said, I’ve been writing a ton of meta lately and this is another one that’s just been sitting in my drafts. It’s basically a This Is Us and a New Amsterdam meta which is something I haven’t done before but something I want do more of. In my Game of Thrones days I used to write a lot of meta about shows and characters that had similarities so this is fun for me. I hope y’all enjoy this. ALSO THIS HAS SPOILERS FOR BOTH SHOWS!!!!!!!
Without a doubt the two most popular shows on NBC is This is Us and New Amsterdam. And what’s not to love? They’re both emotionally driven, heartfelt, shows that focus on incredibly deep and complex topics. Though one show focuses on family dynamics and the other focuses on the healthcare system, these shows are very similar in more ways than one. Case in point, Max Goodwin and Randall Pearson. The more I watch these two shows, the more I realize how these two characters are so alike!!! These two men are kind-hearted, well intentioned, individuals who genuinely want to make some sort of positive difference. They are incredibly ambitious and always have “bright ideas” and “goals” they want to accomplish and somehow they’re able to meet those goals without ever having to sacrifice their wants and needs. By every definition these men are the “main characters” or the ultimate “protagonists.” These are the folks that we are supposed to root for. At the same time, though these men have many traits to be admired, when you truly look at it both of them can be incredibly self centered and selfish especially when it pertains to their romantic partners and love interests. No matter how appealing you make these characters out to be these men clearly fall under the Behind Every Great Man trope.
The Behind Every Great Man trope has been used countless of times throughout Cinema and TV History that I’m sure that I don’t even have to explain it to you but for the sake of this meta this is how it’s defined.
“Behind Every Great Man...stands an even greater woman! Or in about a hundred variations is a Stock Phrase referring to how people rarely achieve greatness without support structures that go generally unappreciated, and said support structure is a traditionally female role via being the wife, mother, or sometimes another relation. This trope is specifically about a man who is credited with something important, but owes much of his success to the woman in his life.”
This trope usually has a negative connotation (and rightfully so) because the man who often benefits from this is an asshole and unworthy of this type of support!
For example:
Oliva and Fitz
Tumblr media
Cristina Yang and Burke
Tumblr media
Cookie and Lucious
Tumblr media
Ghost and Tasha
Tumblr media
There are countless others but these are a few of the couples that come to mind for me. Randall and Max aren’t comparable to any of these men that are listed above but they are still operating under the same trope. It just looks nicer because Max and Randall are inherently good and inspirational. They are the heroes of the story. I would even argue and say that both men fall under the Chronic Hero Syndrome trope which is defined as
“Chronic Hero Syndrome is an "affliction" of cleaner heroes where for them, every wrong within earshot must be righted, and everyone in need must be helped, preferably by Our Hero themself. While certainly admirable, this may have a few negative side-effects on the hero and those around them. Such heroes could wear themselves out in their attempts to help everyone or become distraught and blame themselves for the one time that they're unable to save the day. Spending so much time and effort saving everyone else can also put a strain on the hero's personal or dating life.”
Just because Max and Randall have these incredibly inspiring aspirations, is it fair that their wives and love interests are always expected to rise to the occasion and support them. Is it ok for their partners to continuously sacrifice their wants and needs because they love these men?
Let’s dive into it.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Truth be told, Beth Pearson, Helen Sharpe and Georgia Goodwin had to endure a GREAT DEAL to emotionally support the dreams and aspirations of these men while sacrificing so much of themselves in the process. In media we often see women sacrificing so much of their wants and needs out of love for these male leads and rarely do men do the same thing for their romantic partners and love interests. All three of these women clearly fall under the Act of True Love trope defined as
“The Act of True Love proves beyond doubt that you are ready to put your loved one's interests before your own, that you are truly loyal and devoted to them. Usually this involves a sacrifice on your part, at the very least a considerable effort and/or a great risk. The action must be motivated, not by morals or principle or expectation of future reward, but by sheer personal affection. When your beloved is in dire need of your help, or in great danger, and you do something, at great expense to yourself, for the sake of their safety, their welfare, or their happiness, thus proving beyond any doubt that you put their interest ahead of yours.”
Over the past few seasons we have seen all three of these women truly live up to this trope without any true consequences or accountability from the men they’re making all these sacrifices for. For example, in Beth and Randall’s marriage, how many times did Randall spring an idea on Beth without truly talking to her or considering her wants first? Everyone thinks these two are an ideal couple but she has endured A LOT for Randall.
Randall has spontaneously quit his job, moved his dying biological dad into their home, bought his biological dad’s old apartment building, fostered and adopted a child and also ran for city councilman outside of his district. In all of these decisions, Randall “consulted” Beth about it but at the same time didn’t really consult her. In a way there has always been this expectation of Beth to just go along for the ride with what Randall wants. Is anyone else exhausted from reading that list?! That’s a lot for partner to endure and lovingly support. But Beth has endured and has been Randall’s rock through it all!!! What worries me is that the one time Beth spoke out about her wants and needs of pursuing dance again, he couldn’t match the same energy she was giving him and eventually it led to world war three between them. Though things are looking up in their relationship  and he’s starting to support her more, has Randall nearly given to Beth as much as she’s given to him? Absolutely not!
Similar to Randall, Max also had a wife who was a dancer. in fact, she was a prima ballerina. Unlike Randall and Beth, Max relationship with Georgia was rocky from the start. When we were first introduced to them Max and Georgia were separated and rightfully so. Georgia was never Max’s first priority. The hospital always came first in their relationship. He couldn’t even dedicate a full night to her for their proposal. In order to “save” their marriage they decide to have a baby and they both committed to taking a step back in their careers in order to do so. The problem was Max didn’t keep his side of their commitment and took a job to become the medical director at the biggest public hospital in the U.S. She gave up her career to start a family and he totally and completely betrayed her trust. So throughout season one we see them trying to rebuild their marriage but even in the midst of trying to rebuild a marriage based on trust and mutual respect Max still keeps things from Georgia. For several episodes he didn’t tell her that he had advance stages of throat cancer. He only told her when Georgia asked him to move back home. That’s fucked up! Then throughout their pregnancy he was never fully there for Georgia because he was either to preoccupied with the hospital or himself. At the end of it all, Georgia died tragically at the beginning of season two and really had nothing to show for it in her relationship with Max other than her daughter Luna.
Now let’s bring Helen Sharpe into the fold. While all of this stuff was going on with Max and his wife in season one, Max was developing a deep friendship, borderline emotional affair with Helen. Their relationship started out with Helen being his oncologist. As the new Medical Director of New Amsterdam, he swore Helen to secrecy about his diagnosis so that he could still run the hospital. Through that secrecy they eventually formed a deep bond but as his cancer got worse his secret was let out of the bag. He realistically needed someone to step up and run the hospital when he was going through chemo and though Helen already had commitments she stepped up and became his deputy medical director. Somewhere along the lines Max and Helen started developing feelings for each other. As Helen becomes aware of those feelings, she made a choice and decides to remove herself as Max’s doctor. He BITCHES about it but eventually accepts the boundary she’s clearly trying to set. Mind you, as this is unfolding, like Max, Helen is also in a new relationship with her boyfriend Panthaki. As Max’s cancer seems to be getting worse with his new doctor, she goes back on her boundary and decides to be his doctor again. This pisses her boyfriend off because he could already peep the vibe between them and he breaks up with her. When we get into season two, Max’s wife died and Helen set him up in a clinical trail (with a doctor she previously fired) that’s helping his cancer.  Unbeknownst to Max, this doctor ends up holding his life saving treatment plan over Helen’s head and in order for his treatment to continue she gives this doctor half of her department!
Helen has sacrificed a lot for Max and now in season three she’s finally prioritizing her current wants and needs first! Like Randall, Max is starting to turn a page and is starting to support Helen and truly listen to the wants and needs that she has. All of this is good but my question is did any of these women have to sacrifice so much for the men in their lives to get a clue?
Why is it that this is a trope we see in media time and time and time again? Even if these men are good, why don’t we still keep these male characters accountable when they put their significant others in these situations that are clearly not fair? I’ve watched countless tv shows and I’ve seen a lot of tv couples but I think I have only come across one couple where the male counterpart has selflessly loved his significant other and has always put her needs above his own.
That character my friend is none other than PACEY WITTER
Tumblr media
I might be mistaken but I think Joey and Pacey are the most popular ship in tv history and honestly, rightfully so! This is only example I can think of where the male in the relationship so willingly puts the wants and needs of his partner first. It is a completely selfless and sacrificial love. He never wants to hold her back and he never asks her to compromise her wants or needs for him. That’s why I think so many women love Pacey because in a sea of TV relationships, Pacey Witter is a fucking unicorn.
So to wrap this up does this mean that I hate Randall Pearson or Max Goodwin? No! I adore them. I love both of their characters so much. I just think that when we see the media continuously play out the sacrificial wife/love interest for the sake of their male counterparts, it should be called out. I’m all about sacrificial and selfless love but it should come from both sides.❤️❤️❤️
Anyway I hope y’all enjoy this! As always my DMs are opening here or on Twitter @oyindaodewale

A lil group portrait of the time au adventuring gang!! Them <333
Basically tol fucked up as a kid and is now on the run from the law, but realized that since his life was so crazy he could live off of telling stories of his wacky adventures. When he met Jay he wanted him to come with him, and when he found out jay couldn't come cus he was virtually a demon/god/magic magnet he decided he NEEDED to bring him to capitalize on how it'd make more cool stories. And yeah it worked so since then he's been collecting wackos to aaa go crazy aaaa go stupid (and also bcus safety I numbers or whateva, pop and pip are also criminals and pastel and jay are crimes against god <3) more about each individual under the cut!
Doin them from left to right :)
Pastel: died when she was messing around with some friends and got stuck under a big rock and left to starve. But because of a fluke in the underworld her God decided to resurrect her, a right usually only belonging to saints. Because of this she's now poorly pretending that she totally did something to deserve being revived (she tells a different story every time someone asks, she thinks it's funny) to avoid being persecuted for suspected witchcraft. She met Jay when they were both drunk and they had fun fucking around in the city, and she spilled the beans to him that she was revived for no reason. She regretted it, but jay didn't kill her because even though he's religious he knew what it felt like to be magically cursed and have everyone be pissed at u for it. Also she's really funny with jay so tol begged her to come with them to add more Comedy(tm) to his memoirs
Pop: a time traveller and angel who is trying to hide both of those facts but only really succeeding at hiding the time travel thing. When they were a kid they traveled to this time with his friends Lustre and Cherrybomb, but when they were attacked by the vicious royal guard they weren't able to escape without leaving Lustre behind. Cherrybomb super repressed that memory, and while pop recovered from some minor injuries they vowed to never time travel again. Yeah they only kept that up until they were like 15, but they still couldn't bring themself to go back to when they left Lustre. But now they're 26 (well technically they're like 33 but in their time their supposed to be 26) living with their boyfriend cherrybomb and have years of time travel experience under their belt, and they're ready to go back. Except they can't go back because they created a travel block for themself by accident because of how upsetting the event was, so instead they traveled as close as they could, about 10 years in the future of the time. Now they search for any form of closure, all they need to know is what happened to their friend, and they will do whatever it takes to find this out. But angels aren't super welcome in the past, especially not with uncut wings, so it's not exactly easy for them to navigate this time period. But after a while of their search they met two lovely children (well young adults), a demon and a "cursed" (nowadays they call em spiritually gifted) and felt so bad for how much the world seemed to be against them they decided they could travel with them, just for a bit, to protect them. They tried not to get attached. They failed. They're in it for the long run now aren't they TwT also as they explore this time and learn more about the gods, they start to realize that they might... be the God of longevity???? Or at least an older version of them became them? Time travel is fucked man
Btw Lustre plays a big role in this plot, her hyper futuristic knowledge, 'blessed' white eyes, and strange God gifted clothing would all lead to him rising to a much different role than fugitive rather quickly, but they're not who this post is about ;) also I'm gonna go bottom to top for the 3 in the middle let's go
Lune: just a little guy :) lune is a young rancher/gardener who worships the God of the wood, who kind of goes missing sometimes and is lowkey the least loyal God but shhhh he loves them. Lune and tol were childhood friends (along with their pal cleo) but on one of their little excursions tol took something very important to a very powerful king, and refused to give it back. As retribution the king destroyed their entire town, and cleo put all the blame on tol, tol and lune both knew lune had to take the side against tol in order to not have the town turn on him. So yeah he moved with the town to bring up a brand new farm, long awaiting the day when tol would come home and say that things were OK and they could settle back in town together, hopefully with cleo too. That didn't happen, but tol did come back and peer pressure lune into part time adventuring with him! So yeah generally lune just runs his lil farm and prays, but when tol comes to pick him up he gets a chance to go be free to act batshit crazy, just like when he was a kid 🥰
Pipes: DEmon! One time lune and tol had a little squabble so lune was like 'im gonna get a new best friend and ur gonna regret this' and tol was like 'yeah right, u live with a bunch of criminals right now no one's gonna wanna be ur bestie dumbass' so lune just walked into a cave at night and dragged out this little nonverbal demon because demons who live alone in caves don't have high standards for friends. Even tho it was just a ploy to make tol jealous lune went super hard on it and now pipes is actually friends with the gang lmaoo
Tol: like I said with lunes, stole something important from a king as a kid, monarch got pissed, blew up the town, town got pissed at tol for it, and since then he's been on the run because he's too stubborn to give back the damn thing (they could have just attacked HIM for it, but since la queen decided to fuck with his town, his family, tol thinks he doesn't deserve to have it back.) He had to run from town to town and got into a lot of danger in his attempts at finding places to hide, but he lacks fear and tended to fight stuff off. As a kid he found that he could get enough pity to be welcomed into towns if he told people he had to fight a monster to get there, so he told stories at every town and camp he went to of his hardships. But as he got older, those he stayed with beckoned him to keep talking, and more and more people said they had heard of his adventures. And that's when when it clicked, his shining ticket to true freedom wasn't a place, it was his stories. They gave him food, shelter, fun, memories, a life. So he made it his mission to never settle down, to make his life as crazy as possible and to talk about it as much as possible, and if he ever ran out of energy to adventure, he'd spend the rest of his dying days writing and writing his entire life story. He thought this was a life he'd live alone, but one day he sought refuge in jays little lonely house because he thought it was abonded, luckily though Jay had just been praying for a second chance at life and decided that considering the timing, tol must be that second chance. So yeah jay patched him up, found out on his monthly supply route he was harboring someone very wanted, and took care of tol even harder because he didn't know or care why he was wanted, he just knew that anyone who had a drawing of them as a child on a wanted poster definitely didn't deserve it. So yeah they're besties now.
AAA I wrote out a really long description for jay but tumblr glitched and I lost it :'O ble here's a shorter rewrite cus I'm not writing out that whole thing again >:P
Jay: brought up in a church village,, he was born with the curse, which allows him to tap into magical properties very easily, and be very easily controlled, manipulated, and possessed by them. This allowed him to be very connected with his god (the god of longevity) but also meant he was often treated as a security risk and a monster by the adults of his town since he could let in evil spirits so easily. He spent most of his time praying and he became obsessed with acting on compulsions (repeated prayer, overscrubbing, scratching himself, touching religious things until he felt like he touched them "right") because he believed they were messages from God and would prevent him from becoming evil (look he was a teenager and everyone told him he was a monster his whole life leave him be.) He gets possessed twice, mage as a rep of the town is like "either have ur cursed removed or leave town forever" (uncursing is only hypothetically possible, it's hella dangerous) and he's scared itd sever his connection to his god so he leaves and he's upset bcus his entire life plan was built around his church, so now he's livin alone on a hill and leaving like once a month, he stays up there and sews and prays mostly, he sort of works on himself and becomes vaguely mentally stable, so he prays for a second chance at life since he lost his original path and needs a sign where to go, and then boom tol shows up and the rest is history. Now he has his own little family and things are going great :) other than the still getting possessed like once a week but shhhh
Pip: in between the entrance to hell and the religious central of the continent is a little town that sides with neither. They mostly fuck around and find out, and in this town lives a monster researcher and her less formal wife, pip! Pip is just a silly goofy little guy livin life, and when the crazy bunch shows up she feels like he's finally found her people :3 and for the first time the group gains a member who's begging to join them as opposed to the other way around
Ya and together they all go on wacky lil adventures with demons and monsters and monarchs and what not.
Tldr pastel is a funny lil dead guy, pop is a time traveller and the Adult of the team, lunes a lil farmer man, pipes a hobo demon they picked up off the side of the road, tols a little criminal demon adventurer, jays a religious weirdo who tol dragged out of his hermit hut, and pips an insane little guy

I just binge read all your fundy one shots and had an idea.
Sooooo you know how the little mermaid has a sequel???? Ariel has a daughter named Melody, and during her baptism they're attacked day Ursula sister. Ariel builds a wall around the castle and Melody hates them and sneaks out all the time.
I was just thinking red haired mermaid + handsome prince who likes music + walls and didn't know where to go from there
Oh god I loveddddd the sequel to that movie! It was just so good, and omg you’re totally right! I didn’t realize how kinda similar some of the stuff are when it comes to Fundy’s life. :333
Anyway, I made this short (again, is this even short lol) one-shot about this idea. Some stuff are different cause well, I honestly forgot some stuff about the movie since I watched it when I was like 12 skskks. Anyway, hope you like this!
Sally cradled the precious bundle closer to her chest as Wilbur guided her down the steps that led from the captain’s quarters to the deck of the ship. She scoffed as he quickened his pace, stretching out a hand as though to help her down the last steps. Ever the gentleman, her king of music. She took his hand, refraining from jumping down with the precious cargo in her hold. The sun was bright in the sky as they looked out into the sea, her people flocking near the edge of the boat to catch a glimpse of the small prince of the land and sea. The baby gurgled happily in her arms as she rocked him back and forth, waving a hand towards her sister who had settled nearby. Niki waved back, crooning sadly that she wouldn’t be able to actually see their new addition to the family. Fundy wasn’t quite like the mermaids - like Sally - taking on a more human-form with the addition of fox-like attributes that Sally just knew came from Wilbur. There was no other option.
“They seem excited.” Wilbur chuckled, hands against the rails as he gazed down at the mermaids. There was a twinkle in his eye as he wrapped an arm around Sally, cooing down at their beloved boy. “He’s just so small... so fragile. I’m going to cry, Sal.”
“Like you don’t do so every night each time you put Fundy to sleep.”
Sally leaned into his touch, resting her head against his shoulder as she continued to rock Fundy in her arms, the small baby giggling as he tried to reach for a strand of her long curly hair. She leaned down to boop his little noise, smiling as Fundy reached up a hand to boop hers too. Wilbur kept his family close as they stared out into the waves, the party was in full-swing behind them, but they stayed where they were. She could hear Wilbur’s younger brothers arguing in the background on a matter regarding what she could only assume was Tommy stealing some of Techno’s stuff. From the corner of her eye, she caught a glimpse of her father-in-law, Phil, heading towards him. There was a serene look on the man’s face, his stance relaxed as he approached the couple with an ease and regality that only a king could ever hold. He had retired from the position recently, trusting Wilbur with the kingdom and now here they were, celebrating the first birthday of the kingdom’s heir. Sally held Fundy closer as Phil finally reached them, patting Wilbur on the shoulder and pulling Sally into a one-armed hug. She never knew the comfort of a parent, having only her younger sister, Niki, for company.
“Not going to join in the  festivities, mate? I could watch Fundy for both of you, if you’d like.” Sure enough, Fundy began to reach his little arms towards his grandfather, whining as Sally continued to hold onto him.
“In a minute, dad. Sally and I were just enjoying the view.” Sally let Wilbur take Fundy from her, the newly crowned king rubbing a hand against Fundy’s soft ginger curls before pressing a kiss to the babe’s forehead. Wilbur chuckled as Fundy suddenly gripped a loose brown curl from Wilbur’s hair, the baby holding onto it tightly that Wilbur couldn’t escape. Phil shook his head at the small display, Sally giggling at the sight as Wilbur looked up at them with pleading eyes. Soon enough, Fundy got bored and started to squirm in Wilbur’s arms, reaching towards Phil with grabby hands. The baby’s eyes were fixed to Phil’s wings, clearly wishing to pluck a feather or two if Wilbur and Sally were to allow it. Phil wasted no time in scooping his grandson up, the small baby yipping in the older man’s hold as he settled into his grandfather’s arms. Sally mentally crooned as she looked down at her baby. At least he’ll always have the love of his family. Fundy would grow up with his mother, his father, his grandfather, and his three uncles. “Although, maybe we could spare a few minutes. My little champion seems to want to spend some time with his grandpa, hm?”
“Don’t call me that, mate, you’re making me feel old.” Phil scoffed, holding Fundy in his arms with a gentleness that the king only ever showed towards family. Sally took the opportunity and looped an arm around Wilbur’s, dragging him off towards the center of the deck where most of the partygoers were. Phil gave her a small smile as they left before turning to look out into the distance, cradling a cooing Fundy in his arms. Wilbur looked down at her in surprise, eyes blinking as those deep dark brown eyes - that reminded her so much of the dark ocean depths that she once resided in - looked at her with such love and endearment. How could she have been so lucky as to have him? It had been his heart-song that had made her so deeply in love with him. That and he wasn’t that bad of a looker either.
“If you wanted me all to yourself, you should have just said so, love.”
“Now where would the fun be in that, my king?” She leaned in closer, their faces nearly touching when the band began to play a familiar tune. She gasped, Wilbur’s eyes widening before wrapping his arms around her. The band was playing their song, the song that they had danced to on the night of their wedding. It wasn’t quite the traditional slow song that Wilbur said most weddings had. It was a fast-paced yet short tune, a ditty if you will, that left the dancers breathless and nearly exhausted once it finally concluded. His hands were on her waist, her hands pressed against his shoulders in a sort of faux waltz despite the music that was playing. From the corner of her vision, she could see that the crowd had dispersed, leaving space for Wilbur and Sally to dance if they so wanted to. She smirked, leaning up until her lips were close to Wilbur’s, her breath against his face as she looked up at him with a raised brow. “Well, my king, care for a dance?”
“As if you have to ask, love.” Wilbur grinned. Then they were dancing, their steps hurried and quick as they heard the crowd cheer and clap. Of course, Sally led the dance - as if she’d ever let Wilbur lead. Wilbur adjusted to her steps accordingly, knowing exactly what she was doing and feeling great pleasure at letting his wife take control of a skill that she had tried so hard to master.
As they danced, the creak of the wood pierced through the air as the band started another round of songs. The crowd began to join in, Sally catching a glimpse of Techno, Tommy, and Tubbo amongst the crowd - though Techno was simply standing in the sea of people with an awkward look on his face. Wilbur noticed and left Sally to dance by herself. She watched as Wilbur headed towards Techno, no doubt to help his brother with the sudden influx of people in the small space of the center deck. After a few minutes, she broke off to let herself rest, whizzing through the crowd until she reached Phil who had his wings raised in the air. She ducked beneath his left wing, glancing down towards her son who had managed to fall asleep in Phil’s arms. She pressed a gentle kiss on the sleeping babe’s forehead, glad to know that she can trust Phil to put his grandson to sleep. There was a small feather clutched in Fundy’s arms, a content smile on the baby’s face as he snuggled closer to what he was holding. Phil shook his head, chuckling before pulling Sally into a one-sided hug.
“Wilbur went to help Techno. I hope Fundy wasn’t too much of a nuisance... and that him plucking one of your feathers off didn’t hurt.” Phil laughed, shaking his head as he passed Fundy over to Sally. The baby stirred, but didn’t wake as Sally held him closer, cooing about how adorable he was when he wasn’t awake trying to pull other people’s hair or feathers off. She remembered Phil shrieking the first time it had happened during the first time she had let him carry his grandson. Now, Fundy’s crib consisted of feathers hanging overhead - although those came from the ones that naturally fell off Phil’s wings. “I’m glad you got him to sleep so easy, it usually takes forever━”
She felt the shift in the air before she noticed the dark clouds that had rolled in. Phil tensed up, his wings wrapping around her and Fundy protectively as they all took an instinctive step back. Everyone had gone quiet, the band that had played so loudly ceasing to a lull as the crowd began to disperse. The clouds roiled overhead, yet not a single drop of rain came from above. There was a static crackle in the air that didn’t felt like lightning poised to strike. Sally looked down, her people that were once there having vanished back into the sea with only her sister left on the surface. Niki gazed up at her, worry dancing in her eyes before she too vanished into the depths. Sally felt her breath caught in her throat, clutching Fundy closer as she realized what was causing this chaos.
“Sally! Sally!” She heard Wilbur’s voice call out from across the deck, his curly brown hair appearing within view as he tried to reach for her. She felt the arm around her shoulder tense up, the air screaming to a halt as Phil shouted for Wilbur to get back. There was a low whistle in the air and she heard Wilbur scream as a trident sailed past him, nearly grazing his cheek as it lodged itself into the wood of the main mast. She shrieked, teeth clenched together in anger at the thought of anyone daring to hurt her Wilbur, but Phil kept her where she was. They all stood in utter silence, until a flash of lightning - actual lightning - broke through the sky, a figure appearing at the front of the ship. The familiar painted smile on that damned porcelain mask seared itself into her memory.
Dream tilted his head, “Hello.”
---
Fundy watched curiously as a bit of ocean water seeped past the tall blackstone walls that kept him prisoner within the palace. He laughed as the water tickled his feet, reaching down to feel the cool water against his face as he patted his hands against the water. He looked up, noticing a small grate on the side of the wall that led directly to the ocean. He held back his excited gasp, before deciding to make a break for it.
A pair of arms caught him just as he was squirming his way between two bars, the familiar scent of salt hitting his nose as his mom held him in her arms. He blinked up at her, ears pressed against the top of his head, whining as he was taken away from the grate that presented freedom. He could see his dad by the doorway, a hand clutching at the stone wall as his mom brought him back into the palace. He tried to squirm out of her grip, but she was unrelenting and only let him down once his dad had closed and locked the door behind them. He stomped a foot against the floor, tail bristling in indignation.
“I wan’ go out.” He pointed towards the window, locked (he should know, Fundy had tried it before he realized someone had left the door unopen) but it served a greater purpose of showing him the outside world. The walls had always blocked the ocean view, but his parents knew that he wanted to see it. So why weren’t they letting him? His mom sighed, crouching down so she could look him in the eyes. She cupped her cheek, pain dancing in her sea green eyes as she stuttered to answer him. He huffed, looking away as he crossed his little arms in front of his chest. His dad had moved to stand at his side and he could feel a hand rubbing the top of his head and scratching behind his ears. It would have been nice if they hadn’t kept him from leaving. He wanted to see the vast blue ocean that his storybooks always talked about, to see the shells and the fish that he’d occasionally see pictures of. “Don’ wanna talk, I angy.”
“Sorry, baby. But you know how dangerous the ocean is... We can do something else if you’d like, honey. Anything you want for the entire day, how does that sound?” Despite the anger he held in his tiny little body, he slowly began to forget as his dad began to pet his ears and his mom began to pick him up again. They held him in their arms, doting on him as if trying to make him forget what he wanted in the first place. He purred, happy to be the center of his parent’s attention. Even if he did feel a bit coddled, he wouldn’t pass up the chance to spend an entire day with his parents.
“Go nyoom!” His parents laughed as he raised up his arms, both of them setting him back onto the ground as they both counted from 1 to 10. He giggled, turning to leave the small room they were in. He wouldn’t be caught so easily.
And as Fundy ran away, he spared a single glance back, catching a glimpse of the grate that he had tried to escape from.
‘Someday.’ He thought to himself, and then he was running, his parents chasing after him as they tried to coax him to come back. He giggled, happy to play chase with them even if it meant giving up momentary freedom.
---
Somewhere, a man clad in a white mask sits upon a throne, trident in hand. He had sensed the little one call out to the ocean. Truly, it was a pity that his own kind would ever interact with a human.
Ah, well. He’d just have to take both of them back then.
‘Someday, indeed.’

*brain processing noises*
Listen. I don’t know XD
Okay, explanation. Sally is not royalty, she is just a normal mermaid who happened to have fallen in love with Wilbur - who was the crown prince but in this one-shot he is now the king of L’Manburg. Sally’s only family is Niki here while Wilbur has Phil, Tommy, Techno, and Tubbo.
Essentially, mermaids in this world have the ability to transform into a human form but they usually don’t do so cause they fear humans.
Now, yes, Dream is kinda king Triton and Morgana in this AU (no he is not related to Sally XD). Essentially, Dream is the king of the mermaids and he really does not want his people to associate with humans, so Sally has pretty much angered him for deciding to fall in love with human. However, he won’t hurt them, he just wants them back in the ocean and stuff. Yes, he also considers Fundy as one of his people since one of Fundy’s parents is a mermaid. So ye...
This is confusing and I apologize. I hope you guys like this tho! Also, to the anon, I cross-posted this on ao3. I hope that’s alright with you!

My take on a Genshin Impact Circus AU Part 4 with Noelle as a strongwoman and Amber as a death-defying archery stuntwoman. Their backstories are under the cut!
Noelle:
First off I have a very self-indulgent headcanon that she is ridiculously strong. Like. Can benchpress people. Canonverse or AU.
She used to help out around the circus and she was kind of indifferent to the fact that she was likely going to be a maid. It's a respectable profession. And helping out at her childhood friends' (Kaeya and Diluc) manor as she'd been born into doing seemed like a good job.
How she got into the circus life requires a bit of backstory. Back when they were kids, Kaeya, Diluc, and Noelle would mess around (as kids do) and have little challenges for themselves. Who can run the fastest, who can do the best cartwheel, who can jump the highest, and the like.
Noelle got a little hesitant as she got into her early teens bc she was always told to be ladylike, so she spent one or two of their hangout sessions watching Kaeya and Diluc and talking. One day, however, Kaeya and Diluc are being Teenage Boys and lifting heavy things trying to outlift each other. Noelle has lifted furniture when cleaning up after these two so she figures this one unladylike thing would be okay.
She comes up behind them and just. Picks them both up. On top of the things they were lifting already. Kaeya and Diluc have to take a second and just look at her like "yeah no you are never sitting out of our competitions again"
And so they try other things like cartwheels and tests of courage like who can climb the highest on a tree and things are back to normal.
Skip forward a few years and Crepus dies. There's a huge mystery around it that not even his son's attendants are privy to. The only thing people know is that the sons have been sent away to boarding school. The whole manor is abandoned, all the workers fired.
Noelle for the next few years spends her time working at laundromats, and other odd jobs, but eventually she runs out of luck and suddenly there's too many people and not enough opportunities.
One of her friends from one of her old jobs invites her to go out and see this new circus that happens to be in town. She goes because why not. And wouldn't you know it one of the acts is her childhood friends doing these death-defying stunts that hit her with a wave of nostalgia bc their entire act consists of essentially the song "anything you can do" but with more and more dangerous stunts.
Noelle of course has to say hi, so they catch up and Noelle's lack of work comes up and would you look at that Aether and Lumine happen to have an opening for a maid.
So Noelle settles in, continuing to lift heavy shit to clean under it (Bennett swears up and down he saw her lift a fridge once but he might've been sleep-deprived). She also got into helping Chongyun with the techy stuff so sometimes she'll be at tech rehearsals moving things around and one time a rope holding up a person breaks near Noelle and she. catches it.
Now, one night. One of the acts drops out at the last moment bc injury or last-minute commitment or the like. And it leaves a gap in the show. Everyone else is busy. And panicking bc the circus is still relatively new and they really need to build their rep rn.
They start wondering what kind of last-minute acts they can put together like "what about the gymnasts??" "They all have group routines" "do they have old routines??" "Not polished enough for what we need" and someone somewhere pipes up "man I wish we had a strongman or something" and Diluc and Kaeya immediately whip their heads around to look at each other for like half a second before Kaeya bolts. He finds Noelle doing her usual rounds she's been doing for like a month now and Bennett was right, she is currently under a mini-fridge that she is lifting over her head whilst leaning it against a wall.
Kaeya takes Noelle by the shoulders and just zooms her over to where the commotion is happening and pitches the idea to Aether and Lumine. They're hesitant as hECK bc this is a huge risk they're taking since Noelle isn't even a performer but Diluc pitches that they could literally just scatter really heavy items and have Noelle clean under them and as long as she looks at the audience every once in a while it can be played off as a bit.
Noelle with qUITE the stammer says that she'll try her best but at this time is in need of a moment. She has never performed before. Kaeya and Diluc have to go perform so they leave her with a shoulder squeeze and a thumbs up.
She gets on-stage. She flinches under the lights for a second. She takes a deep breath and focuses on the first thing before her with her best "oh heavens, it's filthy in here", and she gets through the entire act by doing that for every object. So the audience is seeing this seemingly petite young girl lift the equivalent of a hecking car in order to clean under it.
Needless to say, there's roaring applause the second Noelle leaves (which she hears from far away because holy shit I just cleaned for people and they liked it)
This was a bit of a one-time thing and she goes back to her regular maid duties until the circus gets a new strongman by the name "Zhongli".
His style is more about lifting exTREMELY LARGE ROCKS, and breaking them in half whilst giving a history/geology lesson on them.
He quietly observes the maid who he hears fantastical stories of That One Time She Charmed An Audience By Cleaning. He was bewildered at first but saw the merit of it while watching her clean. He immediately decides that this girl has sO MUCH. POTENTIAL that is being wasted by having her work as a maid. He has nothing against maids or their profession, but he invites her to train with him.
Noelle gets hELLA stronger and they come to a conclusion. Noelle performs part-time and is a maid part-time. She doesn't have a particular performance style. She'll sometimes play catch with Zhongli and his big rocks, other times she'll be in the background of performers like Amber in the art lifting some hEAVY SHIT.
She gets along with Chongyun super well bc Chongyun has to make less trips to move his equipment since he's worked with her. She's a blessing for when they have to pack up and move.
Amber:
Amber's story is a little more straightforward. She started out engaged to a suitor. Amber was the kid in kindergarten who was learning about dragons and "idk what everyone else was doing". She's known what she wants for a long time, and what she wants at the moment, is not a relationship.
Throughout her childhood she was a very lonely child. Her family exposed her to lots of academic or ladylike things (do not ask me when this au is set, it's the 1800s and the 1990s at the same time or a suspendes steampunk time) to get her away from the thing she liked most: archery. She'd been exposed to it as a kid and latched on.
This drove a bunch of suitors away, so her family got more desperate and exposed her to more classes and activities to get her away from it. She went "that's easy, I'll just practice at night"
So she does that. She practices at night and underperforms in the coming weeks. It is during this time that her parents (high class ppl) find her a man to marry for some business deal idk.
The man's nice enough. It's just obvious he can only take Amber in small doses, and Amber takes full advantage of this to practice and stay in shape.
How Amber gets into the circus life was essentially running away. She bonds with Eula over this.
So because of all the attempts to make her fit into the ideal lady description, her rebellious streak said "yeah we're going to go as far away from that as possible" and she goes "I'm going to run away with the circus" bc that's what the books she's read say is the most rebellious thing you can do.
She finds THE FIRST circus she sees and begs to be let in. This is the shadiest most sketchy place but Amber sees it as the key to her freedom. She signs a contract.
They treat her like the US treats their students. She barely gets time to practice for performances and she's mostly doing dirty work. When they ask her what she can do she's like "I'm really good at archery" and they go "cool, you're going to be doing that while everything is on fire now. Can you do a handstand"
Essentially they push her and push her and push her to do more and more hazardous things she has to pick up on under the threat of being kicked to the curb.
After a while of this Amber is extremely burned out (pun intended) and as she's packing up after one of her shows, covered in burns but proud bc she hit all her targets without killing anyone, she's approached by a blond foreigner.
Tbh for all she's read, Amber really doesn't consider leaving and this time she can't run away since she's now bound by a contract (not Zhongli's btw in case anyone was wondering).
This foreigner tells her that there's so many ways to improve her situation and that he runs a circus looking for members.
Amber refuses since she's not getting tangled up in another legal mess, but she takes his advice on how to take care of her burns, and improve safety while she's performing.
Skip a few months. She hears word of this mysterious new circus around. Her encounter with who she'll later know as Aether stuck with her, and so she goes. To see whether she could really shoot her arrows without being burned alive.
After a show one night, she tries to get past security and fails repeatedly. She turns to leave and wouldn't you know it there's Aether. And Lumine. Waiting for her once she turns the corner. Amber's biggest concern is her existing contract and when Aether and Lumine say they have a nICE lawyer, Amber sees her next step to freedom.
Aether and Lumine essentially gain custody of Amber (but like for adults) and Amber is. Shocked. She's walked through her new contract of employment clearly and essentially treated like a human being.
And now that she knows things and has more freedom (though still under the watchful eyes of Aether and Lumine to see how she does) her creativity and competitive streak flourish. She decides she actually doesn't hate fire, she just doesn't like when she doesn't know when or where it's coming. And she makes fast friends with the gymnasts, so she ends up incorporating that into her routines. Now she uses her canon goggles to protect her from the burning eyes of prolonged smoke exposure when she uses fire.
When she meets a little pyromanic girl named Klee, she's thrilled that someone this chaotic and sure of herself exists.

She's Got A Date-EoWells X Allen!reader- Part II
Tumblr media
*The GIF is not mine. All rights to the owner*
Part I
Summary: A new meta is in town, and you are starting to want your secret relationship not to be not-so secret anymore. But Wells doesn't have the same idea
Warnings: Smut if you squint very hard.
***
You never really were one to wake up early in the morning. You hated it, actually. You never liked seeing the sun rising up, you hated the way it made you feel; that heart sinking and hopeful feeling. It reminded you of when your mother died. You stayed all night with your brother in the precinct, after a few hours of sleep, you woke up when the sun was rising, and you wished really hard to go home and see your parents again. But you never did. Your Mom died, your Dad went to prison for your Mom's murder, you never came home, and the Detective from the case adopted you. Barry told you back then that the sun was also a star, unfortunately, it wasn't the star for wishing.
You hated mornings, but of course, you have to pay bills and have to get a certain someone from your bed.
Your limbs ache, as you stretch your arms over your head. You went rounds last night, which shows how much you missed each other and how much of an animal you both were.
Still completely groggy, you moved under the sheets, propped your elbows, laying on your stomach to stare at him. You couldn't help but smile upon the sight of him.
Always so stern, well-composed, mysterious, guarded, seems like the kind of guy who's least likely to do something that will get him in huge trouble— except for the Particle Accelerator explosion, that was a huge mess— Now, he's in your apartment, sprawled out on your bed, specifically, naked under the sheets of 24-year old girl's bed. So relaxed and comfortable. The careful and stoic demeanor he radiated temporary vanished.
You ran your fingers through his brown, unruly locks. You remember how hard you gripped on them last night.
God, memories like this are what enters your mind when you talk to Barry and Joe; it makes you flustered and all scared to face them. Eventually it got easier to deal with, but the guilt doesn't fade, or it hasn't yet.
Despite Barry's admiration for the man, he would question it. You're his baby sister, and there are so many issues he could point out. But you know him, he'll get over it quickly.
Joe, on the other hand, the silent treatment is what he's going to put on. He's a tough man to break. Besides, he has yet to deal with Iris and Eddie dating.
You didn't want them to feel as though you betrayed them or left them out on a part of your life, because they're part of it. You really wanted to tell them.
You don't want to be all sappy, you want to take in this nice morning and this man in front of you. He usually wakes up before you. Perhaps you really worn him out last night.
You ran your dainty finger across his cheek, he stirred in his sleep, grumpily. You stifled a giggle. Even in his sleep, he's guarded.
"Good morning," you mumbled, leaning to kiss his pink thin lips.
That woke him up. Gradually gaining his consciousness, his lips moved against yours, passionate and sweet. He reeled you into him, his bare chest meets your naked ones. His hands roamed your body, up and down your sides. He then planted a hand on the small back softly, pressing you closer to him, while his other hand slowly moved dangerously low. He runs his hand on the skin of your thigh, up and down. At the same time, your hands gripped his biceps.
The kiss deepened, squeezed and nails dug on the skin of your thigh in the process. You tried to suppress a moan, but damn he was such a good kisser. You don't know how he managed to stay quiet during intimate times like this. The kiss was turning feverishly and intoxicating. You felt that warm feeling in your stomach, an ache between your legs, sending jolts of excitement through your veins.
Wells knew you better than yourself, and he knows how you get. So before things escalated further, it took him a decent amount of control to reluctantly pull away from your lips.
A beam already crossed his face, as he fluttering his eyes open, "A good morning, indeed,"
You gave him one more peck on the lips, before placing your head on his chest, and his arm around you. You snuggled further to his warm body. It's heavenly, because it's starting to get colder in Central City.
"Can't we just stay in bed today?" You looked up to him, pouting with puppy dog eyes. It has an effect on him, and you like to push your luck.
"We have to go to work. And Caitlin and Cisco will notice."
You sighed. "I know." Your fingers drew circles on his chest. "Don't you think it's time to tell them, Har? It's been 6 months."
"I just need things to wind down, then we'll tell them," he assured you, though it wasn't enough to convince you, because that was what he said the last time. You're young, not dumb.
"When will that be?" You tried not to sound as if you were forcing him, but sneaking around is becoming tiring.
Wells frowned, uncomfortable with the discussion. "I don't know. Let's not talk about this— come on, we need to get ready." He tried to sit up, but you pinned him down. Your legs over his and hugged him tightly.
"Y/N…" He warned. You didn't bugde, kept him pinned down on the bed.
"Let's just stay in for a little while. How about just one more round?" You suggested playfully, biting your lip.
He opened his mouth to object, but you didn't bother to let him start. You ghosted his neck, your lips trailing up, and planted a kiss behind his ear, his sweet spot. You sucked it to leave a mark. His chest heaved, licked his dry lips and hummed in satisfaction.
"Y/N, w-we need to go," he managed to stutter those words.
Ever so stubborn, you didn't listen. Instead, you hushed him, and started nibbling on his ear. You earned a growl from him.
"Just one. I promised," you whispered seductively.
Your fingertips brushed against the skin of his stomach, traveled lower and lower, down lower abdomen, painstakingly slow just to rile him up. His breathing was getting uneven. His face still maintained a leveled expression, but his blue eyes turned dark, boring into yours. You decided to go for it. You took his length, as he grunted. You slowly pumped the base, torturing him. He couldn't help but let out a guttural groan.
You don't wanna look back later today, and all you remember was you talking about going out in public again. So, make-up sex, even though you didn't really fight.
He gave in. One round turned into two, turned into three, until you both were very exhausted and fell asleep.
You didn't wake up until it was late. Harrison wasn't very pleased with this. You know he had every right to; this the third time he got late, because of you.
He scolded you for sidetracking him, hurrying out of your apartment, not before giving you peck on the lips.
The elevator dings, and the doors slide open. You exhaled sharply, mentally cursing yourself for having no self control. You and Wells went at it like bunnies in heat.
You hissed, stepping outside. You were a little sensitive, so sore, limbs are like jello. Your legs wobbled as you walked in the hallway. You feel like each step you take, you're gonna collapse to the floor. It's gonna take you a few days to walk properly again. So much for being subtle and discreet. The team will definitely notice.
You entered the cortex. Caitlin and Cisco were present, of course. Cisco was chilling in his seat, feet up on the desk, while fiddling with a pen. As usual was babbling, about how excited he is to know what kind of meta you have to deal with today to Caitlin who was invested in whatever she was doing on the computer.
He paused, seeing you entered the room.
"I take that your date went well last night," he teased.
Caitlin spun her chair around to face you, cocked her head slightly and an intrigued look crossed her face.
You rolled your eyes. "I didn't have a date, Cisco," you insisted.
You know that, of course, they would wonder. Usually, you would come to the lab around Dr. Wells would arrive, just so you can sneak into his tight schedule.
"I just overslept," you lied, not meeting anyone's eyes.
"Funny. Dr. Wells overslept, too," Caitlin commented with knitted eyebrows.
Your eyebrows lifted, surprised. Despite the fact that this happened before, it still surprises you how fast he can get here.
"He's here?"
"Yeah, why wouldn't he be?" Cisco scoffed jokingly.
Your face paled. Oh crap. You were not as good as him.
You opened your mouth, but luckily, Barry, Joe and Wells entered the cortex to save you. They got a case that needed some insights. Members of a crime family had been murdered. Poisoned by gas, specifically. And Joe thinks that it's a Meta.
Wells wheeled to the desk. "Fascinating. A meta-human that can manipulate poison gas," Wells commented.
"Is it just poisonous gas or he can control all aerated substances?" Cisco questioned, walking to the comms, and stood behind Dr. Wells.
Caitlin followed suit. "And how is he able to formulate the connection. Is it physiological or psychological?" She inquired, taking a seat on the chairs, immediately working on something on the computer.
"This individual can create a mental nexus using gaseous substances," Wells said.
"You mean connective gases on a molecular level?" You asked him, eyes lighting up in excitement.
"Yes,"
"That is ridiculously cool," Cisco stated.
"This is so exciting," you squealed, rocking your feet in excitement like a child at an amusement park.
Barry laughed at your reaction, Joe looked at you incredulously.
You changed your expression and mimicked a frown, "I mean, it's devastating. People died. Sad."
"They get really excited about this stuff," Barry said to Joe.
"The only thing I'm excited about is putting criminals behind bars, except Iron Heights isn't exactly equipped to handle meta-humans," Joe stated.
"I guess it's fortunate the ones you've encountered so far no longer with us,"
It really is.
"Well, unless we're planning on executing every super criminal we stop, you geniuses are going to have to come up with someplace else to hold them,"
Joe was right. The number of people affected by the Particle Accelerator was huge, it's hard to track them all down, and killing them all isn't exactly the best approach for this problem.
"A meta-human prison? Sweet," Cisco murmured.
"Until we figure a way to remove their powers,"
"There is one place here that might hold them," All of your heads turned to Cisco in curiosity.
"You can't be serious," Caitlin scoffed. "We haven't been down there since— it's cordoned off."
"Cisco's right," Wells agreed. "It could be modified to acts as a makeshift prison,"
Caitlin looked at them in disbelief. Your eyebrows furrowed, confused. You tried to read the room, though you didn't get what they were talking about that made Caitlin upset. She's always been uptight, sure, but this was different. As if she was hurt.
"What could?" Barry asked.
"The Particle Accelerator," he replied.
It all suddenly clicked. Caitlin's fiancé died because of the explosion. Cisco told you he died down there. The details were vague, the team wasn't very open to discuss whatever happened that night.
Silence hung around the cortex, as everyone shifted uncomfortably. It was a touchy subject. To you, to Barry, to Joe, especially to them; the ones who lose more than anyone in this room.
"Uhm, I guess we should go down," Cisco spoke.
You all agreed. Cisco scurried out of the room immediately. Wells was about to follow Cisco, but turned over his shoulder, asking Caitlin if she wants to come with you.
Caitlin didn't budge. She stared blankly at the distance, lost in her own world. The doctor called out to her again, only to be ignored.
"Caitlin," he called her. Caitlin whipped her head around, raising an eyebrow in question. "Did you hear me? Are you going down the accelerator with us?"
Barry cleared his throat. "Actually Dr. Wells used Caitlin's help identifying the poison gas." He turned to Caitlin. "If that's okay with you."
Caitlin smiled at your brother. "Let's go."
Taking a step forward, your body reminded you how sore you were. You limped as you tried to exit the cortex. You weren't exactly subtle. The team noticed you struggling with... walking.
"You okay, Y/N?" Joe was obviously concerned. "You're walking a little funny,"
Your eyes flickered to your boyfriend's blue ones. He was watching you carefully, just to see how you are going to dodge this. You wonder are you going to, as well.
If you had a dollar for every single person who corners you, you'll have— well, two dollars.
"Yeah," you chuckled nervously. "Just a little sore. Took some workout classes last night, and the trainer was very hard and intense on me." He coughed at your choices of words, blush creeping up on his cheek.
Your lips curved slightly, only for it to fade when Joe pointed at your neck. "Your trainer gave you some hickeys as well?" He questioned.
Your eyes went wide, cheeks turning
into a dark shade of red, hands quickly flew your neck to cover whichever part of your neck he left a mark on. He's not a damn good detective if it weren't for his observation skills.
"I think I heard Cisco calling us. Gotta go! Bye!" You sprinted-staggered out of the cortex.
Joe looked at Caitlin for answers. Caitlin shrugged and answered, "She had a date,"
You all approached the entrance of the accelerator. You've never been here before, it's not like you have any reason to down here, but the thought of wandering the what's underneath the floor you work for that blew a hole in the city did enter your mind countless of times. You didn't want to ask, though. It was a sensitive subject.
It's huge space, hollow, dim, despite the number of lights it has, and there's a lot of pipes. There's not much to say, really.
"The copper in the tube is arranged to form cavities," Wells pointed out, wheeling inside. "And we can use those cavities as containment, which we have to design to counteract meta-humans abilities, but..." He paused, processing a thought.
"This is perfect," Cisco said with a heave of chest. He seemed reluctant, but it was the best option you got.
All of you take a look around, check for somethings that could be faulty or ruptured by the explosion, so you could fix it, before building the makeshift prison. Cisco took the other side, and you followed Wells.
You pulled your cardigan across your chest, and crossed your arms. It felt strange and bone-chilling, almost. Lurking around the place that someone died in. Ronnie, Caitlin's fiancé could have been anywhere in here, before he died. It must be so hard for Caitlin. It must have hurt so bad. She had to go to work everyday to the place where the love of her life was killed. You always wondered what he was like, prior to the whole mess 10 months ago. No one talked about him, and asking seems to be so insensitive for people you just had met. But it's been months, and you're all way past being just colleagues. You're dating your boss.
"You never talked about him," you began.
His eyes wandered around, too busy inspecting to turn to you. "About who?"
You wondered if he was truly oblivious or he just wants to confirm if you were asking about him.
"Ronnie," You saw the way his posture stiffened when you mentioned his name, but he didn't stop or paused.
You felt bad for asking. He never really says anything. You know he feels bad, but he was never vulnerable with it. 6 months of dating, he just never talked about his pain, and during the times he was actually in the state of it, you weren't in his life.
"He was a structural engineer for the project; he was a good man, a smart man," he said.
"And he died down here?" You inquired.
He nodded. "Yes,"
"How?" He slowed down, before eventually stopping.
You were met with silence. You instantly felt bad. You knew that you crossed a line and let your curiosity get the best of you. The details may be too much for him to explain.
You shook your head in regret. "I'm sorry. That was insensitive," you apologized.
"No, it's fine." He waved his fingers dismissively. "He contained the blast; adjusted it to make sure that it would go upward, not outward. He wasn't able to go out, since a lockdown was initiated. He saved so many lives that night, including mine."
You know he felt bad. For Barry, for Ronnie, for everyone. You took a step forward to him, and hugged his shoulders from behind tightly. You gave him a peck on the cheeks, then rested your chin on his shoulder.
"I'm sorry you lost him," you murmured to his ear.
He sighed, relaxing in your arms, as he put a hand on your arm and rubbed his thumb against the fabric of your cardigan, soothingly.
"Thank you," he mumbled.
"How about dinner again tonight? Just to cheer you up," you suggested.
"I thought we're gonna take a break from your cooking,"
You rolled your eyes, but you were the one who suggested it. You need practice, not spontaneous dinner with lack of experiences with cooking meals.
"I know—"
He straightened. "But…?" He already knew that there is an underlying agenda.
You were hesitant to even say it now, but it doesn't hurt to try. Again.
"There's this amazing restaurant that opened last month. They're not that pricey, but they serve a pretty decent steak. So I was wondering if he could go there too, you know, go on an actual date," you whispered the last part with a wince on your face.
You dreaded his reaction, because deep inside, you know what he's going to say. But you kept your hopes up that he might change his mind on the whole thing.
"Y/N…" He exhaled. "You already know what that means. "We talked about this, right? I don't think it's the best time for us to go public with our relationship."
You sighed, exasperated. You unwrap your arms around him. You heard those excuses enough today. "I know, babe. But why do these people matter? We don't need the public's seal of approval for being in a relationship." You argued.
He turned around to face you. You watched him, as he took your hands and kissed your knuckles sweetly. "We don't," he told you sincerely.
"Then why?"
"It's not the best time. Your brother just woke up and he has a new power to deal with. As long everything worked out, we'll talk about it, okay?" His eyes searching into yours for yes, so you look down at your feet.
You knew, of course. He told you that earlier, still you pushed. You always attempt to do this, using every reason and excuse, but it always leads to you being disappointed. You wonder why it still feels the same despite getting this reaction so many times.
This anger bubbled in your chest. "Yeah, I know. It's what you always say," you murmured through your gritted teeth, sarcasm dripping off of it.
He opened his mouth to reply, but you didn't give him a chance to do so, you walked ahead, past him. Wells, who was very aware of your frustration, followed you. He decided not to react or add fuel to fire. It was not the time nor the place.
While inspecting, walking quickly, so you stay a couple of meters ahead of him, you feel your phone vibrate in your pocket. You fished it out. A notification popped out of the screen. It was a text from Iris.
"Hey. Are you busy tonight?”
***
Yikes. What do you think will happen?
Anyway, I'd really appreciate if you share this and give it some love. Thanks!

hii bbloom, this is for the exchange reading. i hope this resonates <3
your future spouses personality:
i feel like right now, your person feels stuck in their environment and kinda just wants to break free and explore. they might be in a toxic family or situation and they feel troubled. maybe there's a job they think suits them and they'd like to chase after it but their mind is overwhelmed, though i do see that situation actually working out in their favor.
onto the personality. your person is someone who doesn't like to sit still. their very much always on their feet and like to go places. this person has a fiery and youthful energy that oozes confidence and enthusiasm. theyre kinda childlike in a way? and also very competitive. they're the type of person that when they come into your life, they'll rock your world. i feel like they also have a good balance when using their head vs their heart to make decisions. while their energy might be very fun and sometimes chaotic, they actually think very rationally and sometimes don't like to show their emotions. they're the type to intellectualize their emotions and i also feel like they might sometimes have emotional outbursts from holding it in too much. either that or they tend to keep everything inside, holding onto all that anxiety which might keep them up at night. they're someone who appears friendly and fun on the outside but is actually suffering on the inside. though they may be hiding a lot inside, they're very understanding kind to others and are probably the type to lend a ear to those who need to vent. they're considerate and trustworthy and work very hard to achieve their goals. with all the fire energy i see that their very passionate about their work as well as ambitious
dynamic of you and your fs:
so first thing i got here was i feel your person will see you as a prize? idk why but i think they'll feel like they won the lottery when they got with you. they'll find you so so attractive and i think others will see your relationship as successful as well. now, i don't think your person is the most romantic and it seems like they again keep a lot to themselves. they're not quite expressive with their love, however they are very respectful towards you. just because they're not expressive doesn't mean they're not happy though. i see you two both being so happy and content with each other and it'll feel like the sun coming out after a rainy day. i feel that you'll be the happiest you've ever been with this person. maybe you'll go through a spiritual awakening after you meet this person? it's as if you just shine so brightly when you're around this person. they treat you like an absolute queen. this person also helps you to embody your empress energy even more.
Hey there angel!!! 💕💕💕✨✨ thank you so much for this reading!!! I’m so sorry I’m doing this so late!!! Was caught up with some stuff! 😭💕💕💕💕
Your future spouses personality: Your person is quite excitable, jeez I’m just on my toes and my heart is beating so fast. Your fsp is hot blooded and a go getter, they can’t stay still they have to chase 😭😂 they are probably into sports and regularly take care of themselves physically to release all this energy. They go for jogs and are in the gym so they’re quite muscular. Your person smiles a lot, they are super friendly and everyone enjoys staying in their presence, not only are they that but they’re super helpful. I just saw a man carrying something for someone at the gym and his smiling. He is quite sociable. Your fsp likes to wear sleeveless clothes to show off his muscles, he’s quite proud of his arms and just feels comfortable wearing less clothing. Your fsp has fire energy and I just saw them at a pub with friends drinking and smiling away, funny enough it doesn’t feel like he’s a drunk or always drinks but he does enjoy parties and get togethers, mostly with his friends. Your fsp doesn’t like being alone, he always wants to surround himself with people, most likely ponders about his purpose and keeps his feelings to himself, he doesn’t want to burden people but he’s such a generous guy, he should not think like that. He’s so helpful and lively but has this image that he doesn’t want to let go, like he’s a fun care free guy but deep down he wants to know if there’s more to this life in this town/city he’s staying in.
Your relationship dynamic : I just heard helpful. You two are gonna help each other in your respective ways. He’s probably going to teach you how to live a little, be more relaxed and care free, skinny dip in a lake at night or at dawn, howl at the night sky while driving and feeling the wind push against your hand and hair. It’s so relieving and healing to live your life without feeling like someone is going to judge you for your actions. This is a really accepting relationship, you’re probably going to teach him how to meditate, how to look deep within himself and come to a calm, that life isn’t always on the highway and fast lane, how to take care of himself better too. 😂😂 I just saw facial mask and you two eating the cucumber meant for your eyes. Really playful and sweet energy, very healing. 💕💕
I hope you liked your reading!!! 💕💕💕
