I just said this in a reply, but more concise genre thought: This is the only medieval fantasy novel I've ever read where it's an EARLY -- as in Dark Ages, 600-1100 AD -- medieval fantasy (hilarious genre implications) and it's an incredible ride. I keep telling friends it's like reading Pratchett and catching the puns and references and entire retellings and knowing you've missed stuff that's going to suddenly become clear 10 years from now while you yell.

One of the best parts of Fellowship of the Ring is finding out about Aragorn and Bilbo’s friendship. Like I’ve seen people talk about how they collaborated on the song together, but I have yet to see people talk about this:
“[Bilbo] turned to Strider. ‘Where have you been, my friend? Why weren’t you at the feast? The Lady Arwen was there.’”
Bilbo Baggins, The Fellowship of the Ring pg. 261
Like. Bilbo was definitely one of Aragorn/Arwen’s chief shippers and no one can change my mind about that.

men who hate people having their silly little lotr ships are so silly and get so wound up about how someone else has interpreted a piece of fiction
like girl i literally don’t care if you don’t ship them why are you all up in MY business about how i’ve interpreted legolas and gimli’s ending as aligning with early-mid 20th century queer coding??

Inside me there are two wolves.
One says 'it is a common trend for friendships in media to be disregarded in favour of romantic ships and it is a pity because platonic love is in no way 'lesser' than romantic love, and your friends can absolutely occupy a vital role in your life without the feelings being anything else than platonic, even if you're close enough to be regularly confused for a couple. It isn't outside the realm of possibility to put yourself on the line for your friends, trust them more than new romantic partners you don't know that well, and in general be crushed whenever their lives are in danger, even if you don't want to sleep with said friend.'
The other one says 'oh these friends should fuck'

The fact that Celeborn refers to the love of his life as his treasure and refers to Arwen as Aragorn’s treasure … a trend picked up by Elanor who refers to Frodo as Sam’s treasure … it reminds me of how Thorin sought literal treasure but ultimately valued Bilbo above it all … who knows if that’s actually the source of this term for the great romances of the Third Age.

I highly doubt that hardcore Tolkienians don't know this, but if any of you haven't noticed, many of the peoms in The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings have a basic meter of an avarge English/Irish/Scotish folk song.
So, you can actually sing poems like Far Over the Misty Mountains and The Fall of Gil-galad on the tune of songs like Star of the County Down as well as The Wellerman shanty and most cursedly - Drunken Sailor.
Enjoy this information.
