Task: What do you understand about translation skills, briefing, and translation process? Give examples.

Translation skills are those required to be an excellent professional translator. They include the translator’s knowledge, skills, and attitudes. So, what the translator knows, what they do with what they know, and the kind of relations they can do while working with others. Some of the main characteristics are advanced language knowledge, excellent writing and reading skills, cultural knowledge of both languages, and good research skills.

A translator must be able to understand the whole text, even the subtle nuances implied in it. That kind of understanding requires an advanced, near-native level knowledge of both languages you are working with.

In addition, to be a good translator you have to be a very good writer in all languages that you work with. And to be a very good writer, consequently, you have to be a very good reader since both skills are connected. Also, any translator must be prepared to write across a variety of text styles, such as legal, casual, marketing, technical texts, etc.

Another aspect of the translator task is that they need to be culturally competent for each of the target audiences they are working with. They must do more than just translate the words from de source language to the target language, they must deliver the meaning of those words in a way that makes sense to the audience. Here, the translator may need to make adjustments to the text, additions, subtractions, or alterations, for example.

Briefing, on the other hand, is a set of instructions that the customer gives to the translator at the beginning of a translation project, highlighting the specifications and the needs of the client. These instructions should clarify the purpose and the target audience, and also provide more details about the source text.

Usually, the briefing is composed of many specific steps, such as language combinations (the client specifies the source language and other possible target languages), the deadline of the project, the volume of the project (so the translator can estimate the workload), the target audience, the layout and format requirements for the translated text, the context of the target file (so the translator can reach the client's expectations without having to ask too many questions), source files (it helps the translator learn as much as he can about the content of the project), reference materials (any references mentioned in the source text), and a glossary of specific terminologies (it helps for the consistency of the target text, for any previous or future translations).

The translation process is a complex set of tasks that the translator goes through while translating. It involves the analysis of the text, research, and translation, comparison between the original and translation, proofreading, and review by another professional among others if the deadline allows them. The analysis of the text is one of the most important steps since it allows to analyze the source language, the kind of tone that the author uses, the nature of the translation (if it is technical, legal, marketing, etc.), and the research that will be required.

The research is where the translator must have good resources, such as a good dictionary and CAT tools (machine-assisted translation). These tools divide the texts into segments, to enable the translator to translate segment by segment. They also work as a glossary and an editing tool. The translation part is the most demanding one and one that requires a faster pace. It is essential that the editing part comes after the translation one. It’s where the translator can have an overall vision of the text, ensuring that they have made an accurate and faithful translation of the original document.

A beloved poet, teacher and life-long activist for Palestine, he was recently assassinated along with members of his extended family by a targeted Israeli air strike. Man I feel like a lot of leftist activists would do a lot better to just use common fucking language to talk about things rather than dense academic shit that's only understandable to people with PhDs and people who spend 95% of their waking life on Leftist Twitter lmao

Like, you're talking with other academics? Great, use academic language. You're a social media account trying to interact with the general public? Don't say "decarcerate", say "find alternatives to imprisonment". Don't say "collective liberation", say "freedom for all". By GOD don't say "bodymind autonomy", say "the ability to have control over our own minds and bodies".

Yes it takes a little more effort to explain shit in common language but I promise you people will stop looking at you like you have two heads and dismissing everything you say as Woke Bullshit if you like, actually get on their level, goddamn it. Not everyone has the privilege to have a graduate-school level understanding of this type of language or spend so much time reading leftist theory that they can perfectly understand this stuff.

study update Mon 16.10.

personal success: because of my interpreting class i am finally "forced" to care about and stay on top of the news, and i have to say, it's not so bad! i've found some news podcasts in all my working languages, so now i can know what's going on in the world AND have some listening exposure (especially in Polish)!

right now/today i have to:

✅finish a reading assignment for tomorrow's seminar about non-professional interpreting & translation (NPIT) ⬜start research for Thursday's translation assignment ✅summarize the info from Wednesday's class and start prep for this week's

(evening update: wooof ok my eyes are hurty and my head is Empty lol, the rest will have to wait for tomorrow; now it's dinner time!~)

this week i want to:

study the next Korean unit

clean out and tidy my wardrobe

return/exchange some clothes i bought recently

order a new bookshelf so i can actually organize my desk area

and of course any assignments that come up :)

It’s very kind of people I speak other languages with to assume that my slow comprehension and endless requests for repetition are as a result of us not speaking my first language, when in reality, my auditory processing is just complete shit.
