Is it me? Or is it kinda cringy when published books have WORDS IN ALL CAPS? I don't mind it in middle grade and comedy books, but in school it was drilled into us so much that all caps were informal and didn't fit, so when I see fantasy like ACOTAR go ALL CAPS I just kinda... die.
The first time, it was very impactful. I realise I'm biased to this scene because I ADORE Lucien, especially considering the circumstances here, but here it works. It's like, so many lives are at stake, it's such a tense moment, Lucien's risking so much...
Tumblr media
But then it gets to ACOWAR with the most useless, pointless and stupid death scare in the universe (I have a post on that!) and Feyre's screaming in all caps and I'm like... calm down luv.
Tumblr media
Also in a scene not far from that Nesta screams CASSIAN. With no exclamation mark?
Tumblr media
And then it gets to ACOSF with Cassian screaming NESTA and I'm like SARAH PLEASE STOP
Tumblr media
I get that you want to show desperation Sarah but IN A PUBLISHED WORK I JUST FEEL LIKE THIS ISN'T THE WAY TO DO IT

I just saw your post about Nesta stans holding her accountable and I agree 100%. I used to HATE her. But honestly, as the series progressed and the hypocrisy got worse and worse, she became one of the few characters I could bring myself to like b/c at least the text acknowledges that she鈥檚 not perfect! And what she鈥檚 done (being mean? Not hunting?) does NOT compare to Feyre destroying a whole court or Rhysand sexually assaulting Feyre and terrorizing Prythian for 50 years.
I couldn't agree with you more, Anon! Nesta is one of the few characters that actually shows growth. I think more people should realise it's okay to have characters mistreat others, as long as you make it clear that this behaviour is not okay, the character recognises what they've done wrong, they learn from it, and face consequences when appropriate. While SJM seems to understand this with Nesta, she takes it to the extreme and puts Nesta on the other end as the victim, while the IC carry on in their merry little power trip.
Honestly, before ACOSF came out, I wasn't too hyped about it because I'd just reread ACOTAR so Nesta's bad treatment of Feyre was fresh in my mind. I knew that book would make me side with Nesta, but not to this extreme where I ended up hating virtually every character but her.
Exactly! Like okay she was a little cold after a traumatic experience... did everyone forget what Feyre was like during ACOMAF? Not speaking to everyone and snapping and hiding away because she was in emotional turmoil? But Mother forbid Nesta devote all her time to caring for Elain who barely moves a muscle, then fight in the war and become more traumatised, and... bother absolutely no one by drinking and fucking, which Cassian himself said he did? These century year-old fae expecting a twenty-something recently human to work through her trauma within a few months is just baffling.
And THANK YOU for saying that about Rhysand!! The way his behaviour is swept under the rug sickens me so much that my entire blog is basically a Rhysand hate blog.
Sorry for digressing so much 馃槄 have a lovely day, Anon!

i shouldn't have to tell people i'm an abuse survivor to back up my points about rh/ysand being an abuser... someone really thought they shut me up by weaponizing the "i'm an abuse survivor therefore i determine what is and isn't abuse" and i was too scared to say back that i was also a survivor... i used to be angry but now i just worry for that person because they were adamantly defending rh/ysand's actions

Anti-toxic ship rant.
Listen to me children who think toxic ships are okay. They are not. Physical and emotional abuse is not normal. Harassment and hatred is not sexual tension. Manipulation for selfish reasons is not romantic. All of it is wrong!

Me: 50 shades of Grey is awful.
Parents: How?
Me: it misrepresents BDSM culture and romanticizes an abusive relationship. At one point she uses the safe word and he doesn't stop.
Parents: Those things happen.
Me: But it shouldn't. People are being led astray by these books and somebody might end up murdering their partner over it.
Parents: Oh, it's fiction, get over it
Me: And yet, everybody still wants their Romeo

Unpopular Opinion #345
You can still love your thing even if it is problematic as long as you recognize those things. And you shouldn鈥檛 feel guilty about聽loving it. You should understand what makes it problematic and educate yourself regarding those issues. You should also understand why some may choose to boycott or no longer associate with that thing.聽
(Side note: If this thing聽is directly and overtly harmful to a group of people or in general, you should take the time to think about that and maybe reconsider supporting the creator of your thing.)

Thank you SO much for articulating what I'm, frankly, too fucking exhausted to. Thank you.
So I've been meaning to read the end of acosf but I can't bring myself to finish it. I heard that newta GOT ON HER KNEES to ask Rhys for forgiveness and she also gave up her magic for Rhys and Feyres kid. Idk how I feel about that but the begging for forgiveness had me seeing red 馃敧
I hate to be the one to break it to you xsbxlx, but it's true. Sometimes I wish I hadn't read the last part of ACOSF because the ending tortures me so much. It's such a punch in the face. It basically amounts to "Nesta's trauma and mental illness is her fault, she should apologise to the people who emotionally abuse and gaslight her, and then GIVE UP EVERYTHING SHE FOUGHT FOR!!"
ACOSF is the book that made me give up. ACOMAF was once that book because of Rh*sand but I kept going because I loved the world and fae and other characters [Lucien] so much. And it just got worse and worse, and now... I won't be supporting SJM anymore. I'll be reading the books on free epub to see if she changes her disgusting narratives, but she's not getting any more of my money. I'm done.

Yeah, I've heard quite a few hardcore fans say even they didn't like ACOFAS. Which reminds me of people saying even if they didn't like ACOTAR they loved ACOMAF, and how highly loved ACOMAF is, which never fails to worry me. I know a lot of people can just appreciate it for the good parts, but the bad parts are so glaring to me I'm like... are y'all okay??
Can we talk about the Amren's Potty Training鈩笍 scene in ACOFAS?
Like where the fuck did that come from? Ignoring that Amren being "neither male nor female in her previous form" was a HUGE missed opportunity for a non-binary character... SJM resorted to toilet humour? And Cassian literally said "pee"? What happened to the old-timey fancy language? I didn't sign up to hear about Amren's toilet training.
Anyway I'd like to go back to pretending ACOFAS doesn't exist because I've never seen more of a TRAIN WRECK in under 220 pages.

I couldn't agree with you more, SJM's approach to LGBTQ+ in her books as a whole is dodgy. Like Amren could've been a great way to teach about the differences between sex and gender, maybe throw some neopronouns in there, but no.
This book really just felt like a waste of my time. At least ACOSF made me angry but this book was nothing apart from one or two throwaway sentences. It genuinely felt like a fever dream. The potty humour in itself was stupid but to lump it in with Amren talking about her physical sex [and really should've also talked about her gender!] is so insulting.

Tell me about it! Somehow I used to like Fifty Shades, and one of the only things I still like about it is the representation of female sexuality and orgasms and all that jazz. A lot of people still doesn't know that women have sexual feelings. So I respect that rep in both ACOTAR and 50, but everything else... no鉂
SJM writes like a misogynistic cishet man.
Her romanticization of male on female abuse, the constant sexualisation of teenage Feyre, glossing over Nesta being groomed at age 14, the hypersexualisation and objectification of basically every woman, women's existence being watered down to pleasing a man, (especially Amren after her resurrection and Nesta at the end of ACOSF), her inability to say vagina but say cunt, the CONSTANT boob bouncing, the mating bond in general, the infantilisation of Elain, and I'll be editing this post when I remember more.
Like... she reminds me of E L James.

Why I hate Rhys: the complete manifesto
TW // Sexual Assault
There鈥檚 been a lot of speculation about Rhysand assaulting Feyre and I鈥檝e had WAY too many people in my comments trying to justify it, so for those who deny it, here鈥檚 your proof聽鉁
Extract from ACOTAR, page 808 (for my e-book anyways)
I bared my teeth.聽鈥溾淕o. To. Hell.鈥 Swift as lightning, he lashed out, grabbing the shard of bone in my arm and twisting. A scream shattered out of me, ravaging my aching throat. The world flashed black and white and red. I thrashed and writhed, but he kept his grip, twisting the bone a final time before releasing my arm. Panting, half sobbing as the pain reverberated through my body, I found him smirking at me again.鈥
hmmmm. Is this the man y鈥檃ll are falling for? Anyway, once we get past the fact that he basically tortured Feyre into accepting his deal, we get onto the SUPER problematic part - when he drugged Feyre and touched her. While not conscious.
So, Rhys paints Feyre up in some revealing stuff despite her saying she didn鈥檛 want to:聽鈥溾hey placed on me a gauzy white dress. If you could call it a dress. It was little more than two long shafts of gossamer, just wide enough to cover my breasts, pinned at each shoulder with gold brooches鈥 It barely covered me, and from the cold air on my skin, I knew that most of my backside was left exposed.鈥 then manipulates her to drink some faerie wine or something. 鈥溾淣o鈥, I said, and some faeries who were watching us from a safe distance chuckled.聽鈥淒rink,鈥 he said, and my traitorous fingers latched onto the goblet.鈥
Then she throws up a lot, and Lucien comes to her cell and points out how the paint Rhysand made her put on is smudged, which means that he was holding her or and touching her while she couldn鈥檛 object.聽
鈥淚 studied the few smudges on my waist, marks that looked like hands had held me.聽鈥淲ho did that to me?鈥 I asked quietly, my eyes tracing the arc of the spoiled paint.聽鈥淲ho do you think?鈥 [Lucien says] My heart clenched and I looked at the floor.聽鈥淒id-did Tamlin see it?鈥 Lucien nodded.聽鈥淩hys was only doing it to get a rise out of him.鈥澛
pause.
Do you see what the problem is here? Rhys touched her or some shit while she couldn鈥檛 object. Now, I wouldn鈥檛 have any problem with this story if the narration had some sort of deeper meaning on how sexual assault isn鈥檛 always violent and penetrative, but showing the deeper sides of how people manipulate you etc. But that鈥檚 not what happened. Sarah J Maas had the audacity to write Rhys as a love interest. After he drugged her, broke her arm to make her accept his deal, made her get a permanent tattoo and overall being just a generally annoying person. And though he聽鈥渁pologised鈥 in ACOMAF, the excuse was weak, if there even is an excuse for the aforementioned. I鈥檓 all for seeing characters overcome their toxic traits and see a well-written redemption arc, but there was no development to be seen in the series. Feyre just accepted Rhysand鈥檚 (bad) apology, and went on to fucking him. And no, I鈥檓 not denying that Rhys had a hard childhood, and I鈥檓 not saying being abused by Amarantha for 50 years is okay, but that doesn鈥檛 dismiss his actions.聽
Also on the topic of Amarantha, Rhys is portrayed as a sexual abuse survivor. So why is he so eager to have sex with Feyre all the time? Why does he show no signs of trauma? This is a) unrealistic and b) teaches a new generation of younger people that abuse has no consequences which is completely false.
So, to wrap it up, I hate him because a disgusting, annoying archetype of a classic聽鈥渂ad boy鈥 character with no real personality or development.
Anyways, I hope that if you stan Rhys, you鈥檝e now seen the error of your ways, and to all the other antis, I鈥檓 so sorry you had to read the paragraphs of what SJM likes to call聽鈥渨riting鈥.

Rhysand: "I invented feminism! I'm the best husband ever! It's all about her choice!"
Also Rhysand: *Kisses Feyre and licks her face without consent, has people strip her against her will and make her wear skimpy clothes for him, forces her to drink wine that she said she didn't want, then when she drinks it makes her perform sexual dances, constantly emotionally degrades her, twists her broken bone so "the world flashed red and white" for her and she screamed so she would agree to the bargain, makes this stupid fucking bargain, goes into her mind and threatens to kill her while reading her thoughts out, (that was all when she was 19), tells her a sob story and thinks it redeems him, abuses her sisters, says Mor "should be used to" the IC working with her abusers, keeps information about Feyre's health and autonomy from her, tells her family and friends but makes them keep it secret, and threatens to kill the one who tells her.*
And a lot more that I've missed.
rhysand: 鈥渋鈥檓 a feminist!!!!鈥溌
also rhysand: forces all of hewn city to live under a mountain in an intensely misogynistic & violent society, thereby trapping all the women he supposedly cares so much about in a confined space with their oppressors, who aren鈥檛 called聽鈥渙ppressors鈥 for no fucking reason, goddammit.

Always good to have confirmation of things people already knew. In this case, that s/jm worships r/hys and somehow doesn't realize that arrogant is a personality trait and not just an insult. He absolutely is arrogant as shown in the text. You can like r/hys, that doesn't make him not arrogant.
It explains so much about nesta's perspective and how weirdly she viewed him.

nesta isn鈥檛 evil,
nesta is victim of abuse. she is traumatized, and strong, and cold, and head-strong, and broken, and lonely, and angry, and hurt. honestly, nesta is probably one of the most complex female characters I have ever seen. she鈥檚 just a girl, who has massive trauma and a girl who is terrified to take a bath.
she has so much trauma that she doesn鈥檛 know how to deal with.
nesta is many things but evil she is not. as a character, nesta is one of the most realistic and frankly one of the most relatable.
I鈥檓 so sick of this fandom hating female characters for the same traits they praise male characters for. some people will talk about how much they hate nesta then reminisce about when rhys dressed feyre in body paint, scanty clothes and then paraded her around in the same sentence.

You know, for all the hate 鈥淭amlin apologists鈥 get, I鈥檝e never actually seen anyone go 鈥淭amlin is an innocent baby who hasn鈥檛 done anything wrong uwu鈥. We all know he鈥檚 abusive. We simply get that what happened is not as black and white as Feyre's narrative makes it. No Feyre, an illiterate 19 year old with no political experience should not haveequal power to a high lord! No Feyre, he can鈥檛 read your mind. If you feel overwhelmed you gotta tell him. No Feyre, he can鈥檛 ignore his court 1/2
2/2 just to focus on you. Rhysand doesn鈥檛 have to rebuild anything. Tamlin does. We literally just look at the text critically and realize, 鈥渉ey every action of Tamlin should not be vilified!鈥 even as we acknowledge that he was ultimately abusive to and toxic for Feyre (and Lucien). You know who I HAVE seen go 鈥渦wu innocent baby boy has done nothing wrong?鈥 RHYSAND STANS. He just sexually assaulted Feyre protect her. He mindraped her at the manor to protect her. He drugged her to protected. UwU
I agree with you anon. I'll be the first to say that while I love Tamlin with every bit of my heart, he fucked up on many occasions. The man had bad tendencies and obviously needed a smack to bring him back to reality. That being said, it's funny how in ACOWAR Feyre says she's forgiven him yet in the novella we're back to talking shit about him. Like ??? just forget about him then?
Feyre didn't help Tamlin with his ptsd, she demand equal power when her mental state was just as horrid as Tamlin's, she destroyed a court simply because of her stupid grudge with Tamlin. She locked Nesta up like Tamlin did to her and unlike him who was misguidedly trying to protect her, she just did it because she felt Nesta wasn't behaving like she wanted.
Rhys was probably worse than Tamlin since book 1, but since SJM just loves toying with everyone's brains for the lolz we get this mess.

What鈥檚 with people鈥檚 obsession with wanting r/hysand鈥檚 pov from UTM?? You want to see his first hand account of how he abused his 鈥渕ate鈥? How much it 鈥渉urt鈥 him to abuse her?? I swear the handling of abuse in this fandom is so weird and hypocritical. Would you want a pov of T/amlin鈥檚 abuse while we鈥檙e at it?? You see how that doesn鈥檛 make any sense? How disgusting it is to treat R/hysand鈥檚 abuse as heroically tragic? Like eww
