Arya and Sansa’s relationship is only normal if your older sister’s boyfriend tried to murder you and got your friend killed and she decided it was all your fault because she thinks you exist to ruin her life lmao
Like it’s so dumb that the Stark girls’ tense relationship is reduced to Sansa calling Arya ugly and not a single mention of the Trident incident and all the moments afterwards. That’s where the actual complication comes in! And it’s in Sansa’s very first chapter no less!
Sansa disregarding Joffrey’s violence towards Arya because she’s predisposed to think of her little sister as a lesser person who deserved his wrath is an important part of the plot, babes. Her being able to ignore Arya’s pain is quite literally why she still thinks of Joffrey as her sweet prince right up until her dad’s head got chopped
Why are we asked to not comprehend both girls’ chapters just because it makes your fave look bad 😭

Maege Mormont stood. "The King of Winter!" she declared, and laid her spiked mace beside the swords. (Catelyn, AGOT) Stannis read from the letter. "Bear Island knows no king but the King in the North, whose name is STARK. A girl of ten, you say, and she presumes to scold her lawful king." (Jon, ADWD) "You are the real Arya, my lady. Arya of House Stark, Lord Eddard's daughter, heir to Winterfell." (Theon, ADWD) Her proper name was Alysane of House Mormont, but she wore the other name as easily as she wore her mail. Short, chunky, muscular, the heir to Bear Island had big thighs, big breasts, and big hands ridged with callus. (Asha, ADWD) But the wolves insisted; Roose Bolton could not be suffered to hold Winterfell, and the Ned's girl must be rescued from the clutches of his bastard. So said Morgan Liddle, Brandon Norrey, Big Bucket Wull, the Flints, even the She-Bear. (Asha, ADWD) “The black brothers will accompany you as far as Castle Black,” the king went on. “The ironmen are to remain here, supposedly to fight for us. Another gift from Tycho Nestoris. Just as well, they would only slow you down. Ironmen were made for ships, not horses. Lady Arya should have a female companion as well. Take Alysane Mormont.” (Theon, TWOW)
the mormonts have been absolute house stark diehards since day 1. they want to see the starks restored to their power in the north where arya stark is currently the acknowledged heir by many. aly has been made "lady arya's" companion and therefore she is likely destined to make a detour to braavos where the real arya stark resides. its a great opportunity for arya.
it wouldnt be the first time her path has crossed with characters from other northern houses either. her clash storyline is full of them (many northerners were kept prisoner in harrenhal alongside arya, weasel soup, ect) and storm has its moments (the karstark men at the stoney sept). arya also have significant interactions with the northern based institution that is the night's watch from yoren to sam to dareon. theres no shortage of precedent on this account.
aly would be a perfect role model for arya too. she is a northern woman, the heir to her house, a warrior, a mother, and a self proclaimed skinchanger. as arya's coming of age storyline reaches its peak, the point where she must decide who she wants to be, the timing for this meeting couldnt be any better.

lyanna gets written off as a more “feminine” version of arya when lyanna is genuinely MORE associated with “masculine” pursuits than arya lol lyanna seems to have had some skill with a sword and she was trained in jousting too. arya has neither. lyanna dressed in armor and rode in a tourney as a knight for all the realm to see to make a point. arya was forced to pretend to be a boy for survival.
everything we know suggests lyanna was quite an aggressive and defiant character. in some examples, explicitly more so than even arya (ie: bran’s weirwood vision where she beat benjen’s ass). not a damn thing implies she was secretly ladylike and everyones just ignoring it

#this is such a perfect example of people missing the point of characterization in lieu of trying to predict what's the theme of the series #and getting it wrong #It's also hasn't escaped me that none of the non-Arya stans who've latched onto the series seem to have an idea of what should happen next #if Arya's storyline is about realizing that vengeance and revenge is bad then what's her new realization? what's her new drive? #will she be a pacifist? will she reject violence? will she just die because they can't possibly consider the next part of her story? #It's not like they'd ever accept her receiving Robb's crown and being named QITN because that's what they want for Sansa lol #So much of Arya's relationship with her mother is the fear of being rejected by her as the unfavorite #she doesn't realize her mother is searching for her #she doesn't realize her mother wanted Robb to consider her claim to Winterfell even if it was just a last ditch effort to not name Jon #she doesn't realize her mother has had her own experience with causing death even before she became Lady Stoneheart #Which is also important because how does this newfound connection and probable acceptance of her mother impact Arya going forward? #Equally it's necessary for LS be reunited with the child she now knows is alive that she always had the hardest relationship with #When it comes down to it LS is still Catelyn just a slightly warped undead version of her who's last moment was seeing her son murdered #and sorry I feel like I've gone on a weird path predicting Arya and LS's reunion bc I'm so tired of fandom repeating the same theories #the Arya Stan side of tumblr came up with a decade ago like it wasn't originated here lol #revenge bad!!! is just the blandest most unimaginative theme possible sorry lol #focus on the relationships GRRM has crafted!! including Cat's with Jon there's no way GRRM's not going to address that #when they're both so strongly connected to Arya (tags by @saeratargaryen)
arya meeting lady stoneheart is about closure. it’s about coming full circle. its about the cycle of life and death and rebirth. it’s about family. it’s about purpose. its about mercy and justice and grief and, yes, vengeance. but i don’t think its in a “ohh arya needs to learn revenge is bad” sort of way and i seriously doubt thats the effect this meeting will have, at least from the character’s perspective.
arya already knows revenge doesn’t make her feel any better. she’s under no illusions about that. she associates the ability to kill with survival and with good reason because, for better or worse, that what it means.
Arya edged farther into the room. Joffrey’s dead. She could almost see him, with his blond curls and his mean smile and his fat soft lips. Joffrey’s dead! She knew it ought to make her happy, but somehow she still felt empty inside. Joffrey was dead, but if Robb was dead too, what did it matter? (Arya, ASOS)
arya is aware that joffrey dying didn’t bring robb back nor did it make her happy. she still feels empty. in her own way this is fairly similar to the comments made by catelyn and ellaria - grown women and mothers with a lot more life experience then her.

That brought a bitter twist to Ned's mouth. "Brandon. Yes. Brandon would know what to do. He always did. It was all meant for Brandon. You, Winterfell, everything. He was born to be a King's Hand and a father to queens. I never asked for this cup to pass to me." (Catelyn, AGOT) Sansa had the grace to blush. She blushed prettily. She did everything prettily, Arya thought with dull resentment. [...] It wasn't fair. Sansa had everything. Sansa was two years older; maybe by the time Arya had been born, there had been nothing left. (Arya, AGOT)
arya and ned with their younger sibling insecurity. even over a decade after brandon's death ned still feels bitterness about it. not unlike arya's own resentment. they both have one older sibling of the same gender who better embodies the expectation of a man and girl, respectively, in westeros. brandon was taller, more handsome and a better swordsmen than ned. in ned's own words he "always" knew what to do. sansa is beautiful and ladylike. she excels at the creative arts and courtesy that arya struggles to perform.
they were both set up for greatness. brandon as heir to winterfell. sansa as the prince's betrothed and future queen.
until brandon was killed and ned inherited it all. he was forced to step up despite being the second son who never asked for it to pass to him. arya is the second daughter and i think she will have to do the same and assume a similar role just like her father in the end. she might not feel entirely prepared for it either because she spent so long negatively comparing herself to another, but she will have to all the same.

In the godswood she found her broomstick sword where she had left it, and carried it to the heart tree. There she knelt. Red leaves rustled. Red eyes peered inside her. The eyes of the gods. "Tell me what to do, you gods," she prayed. For a long moment there was no sound but the wind and the water and the creak of leaf and limb. And then, far far off, beyond the godswood and the haunted towers and the immense stone walls of Harrenhal, from somewhere out in the world, came the long lonely howl of a wolf. Gooseprickles rose on Arya's skin, and for an instant she felt dizzy. Then, so faintly, it seemed as if she heard her father's voice. "When the snows fall and the white winds blow, the lone wolf dies, but the pack survives," he said. "But there is no pack," she whispered to the weirwood. Bran and Rickon were dead, the Lannisters had Sansa, Jon had gone to the Wall. "I'm not even me now, I'm Nan." "You are Arya of Winterfell, daughter of the north. You told me you could be strong. You have the wolf blood in you." "The wolf blood." Arya remembered now. "I'll be as strong as Robb. I said I would." She took a deep breath, then lifted the broomstick in both hands and brought it down across her knee. It broke with a loud crack, and she threw the pieces aside. I am a direwolf, and done with wooden teeth. - Arya X, ACoK
Arya is so rarely associated with faith and prayer in this fandom, yet when she prays to the Old Gods for guidance, they respond and restrengthen her sense of self. Arya of Winterfell! Daughter of the North! She is a direwolf and done with wooden teeth! ✨🤍🩶🐺✨

mercy chapter: arya is sent to the playhouse by the faceless men on a mission to stage a crime and frame harys sywft's retinue for the rape and murder of an innocent braavosi girl. this is sabotage bc the lannister refuse to pay their debts and the iron bank will have its due. now braavos has just cause to sever its ties with the lannisters for this (alleged) crime which further undermines their already weakening rule in kings landing. the iron bank's rejection will doom the current king of westeros and leave the iron throne ripe for the taking by another faction. which is exactly what they want bc the king they are currently backing has assumed its debts (see: theons twow chapter) the killing of raff the sweetling was a calculated assassination by the faceless men on the iron bank's behalf and it will effect the political scene on two continents.
the asoiaf fandom: arya went rogue and killed a man for revenge oopsie 🤡

no offense but how would Arya, a girl who constantly yearns for home/ the North, someone who's deeply community driven, and not only desires but consistently acts to protect and provide for others, becoming the Lady of Winterfell "go against her convictions and purpose in life"? 🥴🥴🥴

"He has lost the north," insisted Hosteen Frey. "He has lost Winterfell! His brothers are dead . . ." For a moment Arya forgot to breathe. Dead? Bran and Rickon, dead? What does he mean? What does he mean about Winterfell, Joffrey could never take Winterfell, never, Robb would never let him. Then she remembered that Robb was not at Winterfell. He was away in the west, and Bran was crippled, and Rickon only four. It took all her strength to remain still and silent, the way Syrio Forel had taught her, to stand there like a stick of furniture. She felt tears gathering in her eyes, and willed them away. It's not true, it can't be true, it's just some Lannister lie. - Arya X, ACoK

#unlike other characters arya never ever gets the ''she's 11 and impressionable'' defense #and like lol #dareon flaunted his desertion in front of her #he betrayed his commander and abandoned his brother #any lord in westeros would've sentenced him to death #ned jon stannis ect #and would've been seen as justified in doing so #arya does the same thing and she's evil #yeah we can argue the morality of the NW #but that's not what this is about #its about arya assuming a role that is reserved for male characters #thats the upset (tags via @gendrie)
His lord father smiled. "Old Nan has been telling you stories again. In truth, the man was an oathbreaker, a deserter from the Night's Watch. No man is more dangerous. The deserter knows his life is forfeit if he is taken, so he will not flinch from any crime, no matter how vile." (Bran, AGOT) I should kill them myself. Whenever her father had condemned a man to death, he did the deed himself with Ice, his greatsword. "If you would take a man's life, you owe it to him to look him in the face and hear his last words," she'd heard him tell Robb and Jon once. (Arya, ACOK) The girl was not sorry, though. Dareon had been a deserter from the Night's Watch; he had deserved to die. (Arya, ADWD)
weird how nobody ever acknowledges that arya is following the example st. ned set for his children when she condemns a man to death lol which isnt me saying shes not desensitized to violence or on a dark path (ect ect ect). she still has things to learn about the power she wields, but these are explicitly the lessons of eddard stark who is widely regarded as a paragon of honor. ned killed A LOT of people in his position. its part of the job description. bc the power of life and death is the foundation for both rulership and arya's arc
and maybe (just maybe!) arya assuming the responsibilities of the lord of winterfell, again and again, suggests something about her endgame
