i can’t emphasize enough how much this means to me personally. i live in texas, one of the most conservative states in the country. even in my hometown, which is a mid-size city, there were no workplace protections for LGBT+ workers except for in city associated positions. that meant that if i was out and applying for a job i could be denied it simply because i was gay. that meant that if i had a job i could be fired simply because i was gay. and in some other places, things like that happening may seem unlikely but it was still very VERY common here. my biggest fear and issue with coming out was that even if i found a community and family that would except me, i could still be LEGALLY discriminated for being LGBT+. even if everything went well, i could still be limited in my career only because i was queer. now i don’t have to live with that fear. yes, people will find loopholes and other ways to discriminate against LGBT+ workers, but at least i have something standing in between me and overt workplace homophobia. and especially after friday’s loss with Trumps bullshit transphobic repeal, this is at least some type of win for non-cisgender people as well.
