🥮  RENT A BOYFRIEND BLOG TOUR 🥮
I’m very honored to have been a part of the hearourvoices tour for this amazing book! I absolutely loved this book and I hope you’ll pick up a copy if possible!
Synopsis:
Rent a Boyfriend reads like a cheesy k-drama in the best way possible with its fake-dating premise, cavity-inducing romance, and enough family drama to make the Kardashians look boring. Chloe Wang, tired of her parents constantly pressuring her about marrying the richest bachelor in their small Palo Alto community, turns to Rent for Your ‘Rents, a company that’ll provide you with a perfect plus one for a price. Her algorithm-assigned boyfriend is Drew Chan, an aspiring artist fallen on hard times who became a Rent keep a roof over his head. But somewhere in between the persona they present to Chloe’s parents and their vulnerable, late-night texts, something real begins to blossom between them. But can their new and fragile relationship survive the strict expectations of their families and communities?
Review:
Rent a Boyfriend was one of my most anticipated releases of the year and it definitely didn’t disappoint. As a Chinese-American girl from a background very similar to Chloe’s, I was able to relate immensely to her struggles with her parents. I expect many other first-generation Asian youths would also see themselves reflected in Chloe’s struggles to break free from the influence of her parents while also desperately trying to cling to them. While RaB is no doubt a happy story, there is a bittersweet taste throughout as we see Chloe realize that there’s only so much she can change about her parents.
Other than it’s amazing representation of the struggles of children of the Asian diaspora, RaB also depicts East-Asian culture so well, from the mouth-watering food to the gossipy church ah yi’s that humble-brag about their children. It seems like such a small thing, but having a book depict my culture so well honestly makes me emotional. The cover itself is amazing and I’d love to see more people of color on future books. Representation matters, and RaB does an amazing job.
I will definitely be picking up more of Chao’s books in the future, and I highly recommend RaB to literally anybody looking for a cute romance.

Rent a Boyfriend by Gloria Chao (x)
Drew made me dream. For him, for myself, for us. I’d been so focused on what I didn’t want for so long that I’d forgotten how to fly among the stars and the moon—where the sun belonged.

AHHHHHH I can’t believe I got this ARC and a chance to be on the blog tour! Anyways, without further ado:
Summary:
Thea Hope longs to be an alchemist out of the shadow of her famous mother. The two of them are close to creating the legendary Philosopher’s Stone—whose properties include immortality and can turn any metal into gold—but just when the promise of the Stone’s riches is in their grasp, Thea’s mother destroys the Stone in a sudden fit of violent madness.
While combing through her mother’s notes, Thea learns that there’s a curse on the Stone that causes anyone who tries to make it to lose their sanity. With the threat of the French Revolution looming, Thea is sent to Oxford for her safety, to live with the father who doesn’t know she exists. But in Oxford, there are alchemists after the Stone who don’t believe Thea’s warning about the curse—instead, they’ll stop at nothing to steal Thea’s knowledge of how to create the Stone. But Thea can only run for so long, and soon she will have to choose: create the Stone and sacrifice her sanity, or let the people she loves die.
Review:
★★★★/5 (3.5 stars)
Thank you to Netgalley and the publishers for providing me with an arc!
The premise of AGF was fascinating- alchemy in a French Revolution setting. The writing was beautiful and vibrant, and I felt truly immersed in the setting. The flow made the book very difficult to put down, especially near the middle.
Thea was a very fascinating main character and I loved following her story in her point of view. While we only see her mother Meg for a few scenes, their relationship was very nuanced.
One major issue I had with this book was Thea’s motivations towards the second half of the book- her blind trust in Will was a little frustrating at times and definitely turned me off from the story.
Overall, a decent debut and a quick read once you get down to the task. The designers for this book also deserve a raise, the cover is so gorgeous 😍

**SPOILER-FREE**
4.5 stars of tears and suffering Thanks to Netgalley for the digital arc! Where do I even start with this. The Burning God, while certainly not flawless, brings The Poppy War saga to an extremely satisfying end. Nikara is once again plunged into war as Rin leads the South into Rebellion against the Dragon Warlord and Nezha. Rin soon discovers leadership isn't all she bargained for as she struggles to command people tired of conflict. Personally, the best thing about this book was Rin's character arc. Hands-down. Having followed her from when she was a rage-filled outcast at Sinegard, she's already a completely different character at the beginning of TBG. But somehow, her character gets yet another beating and we see her go from an inexperienced general to someone making decisions for the good of a nation. (No spoilers! You'll know when you get there hehe) I'm truly not ready to let go of her, but her character arc comes to a superbly written end that's completely reasonable within the universe Kuang has built. We also get to see much more of Kitay, Nezha, and Venka who've also become unrecognizable from their Sinegard youth. Kitay serves as Rin's balance, the one person on her side who's not afraid to challenge her (sometimes idiotic) decisions. He retains the same sense of compassion and curiosity he had in the first book and is probably the one person who's fully sane by this point. Venka joins Kitay and Rin's campaign and I'm so glad we get to see more of her trampling the expectations that were originally placed on her. Nezha is...Nezha. A little misguided, and eternally convinced he knows better. Another wonderful part of TBG is that we get to see much more of Nikara as Rin's campaign brings them around the country. There's deeper introspection on the dynamics of each province the makes Rin's attempts to unite the fractured country seem immensely difficult. We make a return to Rooster province, Rin's origin, and it's a heart-wrenching reminder of what she used to be. The effects of years of war on civilians is also heavily featured and we get face-to-face with the direct effects of Rin's choices. Overall, a beautiful and haunting end to a fantastic series. I can see why Kuang has said she's had the ending envisioned since the beginning and I truly think there is no better way to end Rin's story. The Poppy War saga will remain one of my favorites and I can't wait to see what Kuang does next.
