My Top 100 Ships (#70: Jack/Ianto)

When Did I Start Shipping Them? Whenever the narrative started building them up as a pairing: I don't remember if they were shippable from the first episode (it's been ten years since I watched the show), but I was on board with the canon narrative. Why Do I Ship Them? I already cared a lot about Jack going into the Torchwood show, but Ianto stole my heart from the first episode. I would give Ianto the whole world if I could, and I want him to have whatever helps him feel happy. If that's Jack, then I want to read about them falling in love in a thousand universes.

Favourite Fanfiction Tropes/Staples? The show kind of gives us the edges of the explicit scenes, so I love a fic for these two that commits to exploring their dynamic in bed. Also, some good angst with a happy ending. We're in the fanfiction for catharsis and comfort with these two!

My Top 100 Ships (#71: Eragon/Murtagh)

When Did I Start Shipping Them? Grade seven, baby! I was an early little fandom gremlin with my Eragon ships: I was also out here campaigning for Murtagh/Saphira for some reason??? I was an Eragon multishipper but these two are the ones that stayed with me. I shipped them before the sibling reveal and then was too stubborn to step back. Why Do I Ship Them? The world they live in is so dangerous and I care about both of them so much: I just want them to hold onto each other. I want them to be the centre of each other's universes, because things seem to go better for them when they're together, and whenever they try and do things for other people, it seems to fall apart.

Favourite Fanfiction Tropes/Staples? It's been a long, LONG time since I read fanfiction for these boys, and I don't think there's very much for them, but I'm a sucker for hurt/comfort with either of them as the whumpee. Also fics where the dragons work as matchmakers :)

When Did I Start Shipping Them? When I first read the books, in grade 10. I was never part of the asoiaf fandom, so I actually looked up this pairing for the first time for this project and was genuinely surprised that it was a popular one! I was weird in my friend group for shipping them, so I assumed it would be a niche ship. Why Do I Ship Them? I think I was just desperate for something to hold onto in Sansa's early sections, and I latched onto The Hound: I was interested in their dynamic and it felt like something I genuinely wanted the book to explore. The way that he showed her small kindnesses was just something I was entirely taken with: I would have to put down the book and just stare out the school bus window, overcome with emotion. I cared so much about Sansa and I wanted her to have something that was good. I suppose if I wasn't the person I am, I would have seen it as a parental relationship, but the asoiaf books are like 60% horny vibes to me, so I never even considered that. Well, here we are.

Favourite Fanfiction Tropes/Staples? I've never read fanfiction for them, but I'd like some heavily artsy writing with this pairing: the kind of fanfiction that feels half like a poem and half like a surrealist painting.

When Did I Start Shipping Them? When I watched my first Undertale playthrough (jacksepticeye, 2016) I really shipped them from their first face-to-face interaction in the pacifist run! Why Do I Ship Them? They're both sad and they help each other be happy. Isn't that the best kind of love? Also, I like parental!Sans, and this pairing often offers that dynamic.

Favourite Fanfiction Tropes/Staples? Getting together fics! A lot of Soriel fics are established relationship, but I love reading about them getting closer together and getting to know each other.

Fanfiction Rating: C+ They've got a few good fics but Disney pairings are always a bit hit-or-miss on AO3.

When Did I Start Shipping Them? The second Judy said "it's called a hustle, sweetheart." Why Do I Ship Them? I genuinely love both of these characters a ridiculous amount. Judy's naive optimism plus Nick's cynical guardedness? It's cliche but it's unbeatable, and I want them both to be happy so badly.

Favourite Fanfiction Tropes/Staples? I'm so embarrassingly predictable, but it's fanfics where Nick genuinely goes feral at the climax but he protects Judy instead of eating her like the villain planned. (Or fics where Judy is like 'hey you should pretend to be feral because I have a new kink now' and Nick is like 'I BEG YOUR PARDON')

Fanfiction Rating: B+ I have not touched Inuyasha fanfiction since my ff.net days, and the actual canon slowburn is SO GOOD I barely needed fics for this pairing. But also there's still a bunch of good fics out there. We're spoiled.

When Did I Start Shipping Them? Oh, the first time Kagome told him to 'sit.' It was an awakening as a preteen. Why Do I Ship Them? The show just sells the ship so well! You've got the grumpy demon learning how to be softer and more vulnerable, you've got the tiny schoolgirl learning to kick ass and take names, and they're growing together and falling in love and it's beautiful!!

Favourite Fanfiction Tropes/Staples? Feral demon mode Inuyasha ficssssssssssssss (I am predictable >:3)

My Top 100 Ships (#76: Mirabel/Bruno)

Fanfiction Rating: C+ Almost 700 fics and the vibe is very consistent! Also... oops, my unfinished fic is in the top ten on AO3??? Gosh, I should finish that. Anyways I love the fics for this pairing, there are some that are a little too fluffy for the problematic elements (for me), but overall they do a good job of walking the line.

When Did I Start Shipping Them? Oh, immediately when they met for the first time. The character designs were so nice and their (re)meeting is so dramatic! And then when they held hands for the vision I was sold. Why Do I Ship Them? Family outcasts who help each other find a way to feel better about themselves? Something about the way that they're sneaking around the back walls together just taps right into the part of my brain that appreciates forbidden romances.

Favourite Fanfiction Tropes/Staples? I like getting-together fics from Mirabel's perspective. Getting her 'oh shit' moment is so good, and then being with her through the process of slowly getting Bruno on-board is the vibe for me. Overwhelmed!Bruno is my lifeblood.

My Top 100 Ships (#77: Brittany/Santana)

Fanfiction Rating: C- Glee fanfiction is..... an experience. This is definitely a pre-AO3 pairing, but it's still rocking over 3k fics on the archive. Most of those are background to m/m or faberry fics though!

When Did I Start Shipping Them? When I came out in 2011, I was immediately compared to Britney and Santana by my friends: they were the gay girl representation of the time. I watched Glee the next year and basically shipped them from the start because I knew about them from that experience! Why Do I Ship Them? I care about them because they're classic, and they were tied into my early gay experience. I ship them because they make each other happy. Glee's cycle of introducing 'mean girls' and then redeeming them might get repetitive by the end, but Santana was such a solid villain character and I'm glad she didn't completely lose her claws when she was happy.

Favourite Fanfiction Tropes/Staples? I like complete AUs for this ship: meeting after high school or other set-ups. I am also a fan of poly!trio fics with Quinn in the mix, of course.
