Hello! I am redoing my Belle dress and I was just wondering what fabric you used. It's absolutely lovely and I wanted to know where you got it.
Hi!
Thank you so much! The main fabric for the dress is a wholesale cheap gold taffeta. I usually go to this huge fabric warehouse since I’m on such a tight budget for my costumes! The fabric for the puffy skirt layer and detail on the sleeves is just a cheap gold sparkle tulle from the same place. I wish I had more information, but there are really no signs at this store and my fabric knowledge is pretty limited!
Have fun remaking your dress :)

So I was wondering how many yards of fabric did you use for each large circle skirt on your belle cosplay?
It’s been a while but I think each circle was about 4 yards! I cut them out in halves then sewed them together to make the full circle.

Belle’s Ballgown Construction Notes
For anyone interested, here are some photos and notes from the process of making my Belle gown! This was a very time-consuming project but so worth it in the end, and I learned a lot throughout the construction.
I love Belle’s gown personally because there are SO many variations on it. There is the movie version, several versions that have been used throughout the years at the Disney parks and parades, the Broadway versions, and tons of individual designs that cosplayers have come up with. Mine is heavily inspired by the current two-piece character costume at the Disney Parks, but with a color palette more inspired by the movie and much more budget-friendly materials (seriously, check out the new park version. It’s luxurious af).

I’m starting here with what is actually under the gown. The 6-hoop skirt is from Amazon because making one from scratch scared me tbh. The petticoat on top is SO important, without it you can see the hoops through the material of the skirt. It also provides just a bit of extra volume to the skirt. I made this out of cheap netting and just followed a basic petticoat tutorial online. I had trouble sewing this material with my machine so it was all hand-stitched, and because of this it’s only one layer – my laziness got the best of me. (And yes, that is a duct tape and PVC dress form; I’ve since upgraded to a real adjustable one but it did the trick until I could afford it!)
Tumblr media
The skirt portion is composed of 3 layers altogether; pictured is the bottom layer of gold taffeta and sparkle tulle on top. All the skirts were just very long circle skirts, and this worked perfectly over the hoop skirt!

The top layer of the skirt is another gold taffeta circle skirt, but gathered at the seams. The skirt of this gown alone was over 20 yards of fabric!

Once a waistband and hook-and-eye closure were added to the skirt, I started on the top. It is a (very) simple corset adapted from this pattern, then I stitched the taffeta and tulle sleeves along the top of the corset’s front and back. It does have a side zipper so I don’t have to completely untie the laces each time.

The finished gown! The swags along the skirt are half-ovals of taffeta covered in a layer of tulle and hand-stitched onto the skirt. The roses were rolled and hot-glued, then stitched on top. It’s definitely not perfect, and there are things I would do differently if I ever remade it, but I love it anyway.
Hopefully that was helpful to anyone who may be looking to make a gown of their own! I read just about every tutorial on the internet while making mine, and really tried to make it my own in the design and techniques used. It was truly a labor of love!
If you have any questions about the dress or how I made it, feel free to ask! It’s definitely a big project to take on but so worth it when you finally get to wear it!
