this isn’t anything meta or whatever, it’s 100% due to translations, but it’s Fun for me that in the German subtitle track, the Tree is obviously Baum (because it means ‘tree’) - L Frank Baum wrote the Land of Oz books

to get out of Wonderland, the Ever After, back to the Land of Oz, Remnant, you have to go through Baum

Then, my friend said, “What if Oscar is trying to be like Ozpin, because he wants to feel needed, and Ozpin can give what is needed.”

You know what I just realized Oscar was implying when Jaune asked if they would make it?

Oscar: Around that campfire, did it matter?

Jaune: No, no. I guess it didn’t.

Oscar mainly said that to make Jaune feel better but there’s also an underlying implication, he’s also saying that about himself, implying that he’s possibly come to accept that even if he doesn’t make it, that having been around everyone, his friends, making memories with them, (his own campfires, if you will) it doesn’t matter to him, because at the end of the day; he was apart of their lives and they were apart of his and nothing else matters.

It’s a beautiful sentiment that I’m sure Oz also sadly came to the same conclusion himself.

Them Bois!!! So glad to see them talking and sharing their experiences!

I think they're really setting up an Oscar and Ozpin focused arc in the future (pardon my pun), where the merge will probably be stopped after coming very close to finalize. There's a sense of melancholic finality about Oscar but still both him and Ozpin are fighting to delay the process and their past and new friends (like Neptune and Sun in the past episode) keep differentiating between them, in a way helping them regain what sense of self they have left.

And it's really interesting to see Oscar as a part of JNPR but in a very special way. He feels like part of the team more than ever now, not entirely because of himself but not entirely because of Ozpin either. Wonder if the rest of RWBY beyond is gonna show us more interactions.

Also interesting how Oscar is adopting Ozpin's mannerism and speech. Does that mean that Ozpin, before the merge, didn't speak that way? It's an Oz thing, not an Ozpin thing? Mmmhhh.

Something about Oscar relegating himself to be used. Can’t spend time with Ren, too busy trying to find RWBY+J. Too busy attending meetings. Too busy fighting the merge devouring him.

RWBY+J is back. Jaune needs help? Of course he’ll help! He’ll give advice he’s never followed. He’ll smile reassuringly, say the right words. Oops! He made a mistake. He clears his throat, hides his hands. Smile, again.

He can feel the end drawing closer. But as long as he’s helping his friends, keeping their bonfires going… does it matter?
