Magnolia - Papyrus X Reader Oneshot

🌲💘 Pining with a happy ending and fluff oneshot.

I'll be honest I did not expect this to be almost 2000 words when I started writing it. I was just going off a vibe and then I took off running with it. I wrote this in about an hour on nothing but Laufey and brain zoomies before breakfast.

I also think this is my first ever Papyrus X Reader that I've ever published. So to my friends who are Papyrus enjoyers, enjoy the pining. I'll be honest - I think my Sans favoritism still showed though. I will own up to it.

Summary: Why wouldn't you adore someone like Papyrus? He had a soul of gold. Sadly you were just slightly too late with telling him how you felt. Mettaton swept him off his feet from right under your nose... and now you're left with unspoken feelings. It's a good thing Sans knows his brother well though.

He was like a bright ball of light that just bounced everywhere - like the sun who shined on everyone who laid eyes on him. He was so enthusiastic and extroverted and genuine. He intimidated you at first. He was loud, boisterous, and intimidating because he was just so eager to get to know you. Even as a new hire, he was so open and helpful. He showed you the ropes, repeated things with no issue, showed you first hand, corrected you with a gentle nudge and a smile.

You'd never had an easier time being trained for work… and having a handsome skull to stare at was definitely a plus. It didn't take long for your crush to start. You followed him everywhere he allowed you to. He took you with him to meet his friends and his brother. He took you with him to hang out and get lunch and he became your friend so easily you didn't even realize he was one until he introduced you to his brother as his friend from work during a picnic party.

Everyone could see from the way you stared up at Papyrus and looked his way every time he showed his skull that you were infatuated. They would watch you come out of your shell or light up whenever he came around. The more observant friends of his nudged you in his direction - knowing well that you were sweet and the two of you would look good together.

But sometimes others are simply just quicker and bolder than you were.

Mettaton swept him off his feet right from under your nose, and of course, Papyrus being a major fan of the robot, agreed with so much enthusiasm it nearly shattered your soul the first time he told you. Which was over the phone the night after Mettaton confessed to him.

A lot of sweets and unhealthy snacks were consumed that night. It was pretty miserable at first, you would admit. You'd purposefully skip Mettaton's songs on the radio. Hide the DvDs you and Papyrus used to watch from him. You even tucked away the merch that Papyrus and you had bought when you went to meet him for the first time at one of his plays.

You never had the heart to throw them away. All of those songs, DvDs, and merchandise were memories you made with Papyrus while he was supporting his favorite celebrity. You just didn't think the two of them were such close friends already… That didn't mean you needed daily reminders of the one who pulled away the skeleton who held your affections though. You didn't know Mettaton well, but if he was making Papyrus happy… he couldn't be that bad, could he? Maybe it was better for Papyrus to be with someone as exuberant and flashy as him - someone who could keep up with his excitable nature and give him a fancy lifestyle or something.

You took the time to sulk tonight. You deserved it. They were out on their 3 month anniversary date, and you were in the downtown area on a Tuesday night. It was barren, but the plazas were still lit up. Yellow fairy lights strung across each lamp post throughout the street that reflected off the trickling water of the fountain you sat at, running the tips of your fingers through the cold water with a forlorn expression and humming sad songs.

Did you look miserable? Yes. Did you feel miserable? Also yes.

"Magnolia.~ 🎵 She could have anyone in the world.~ 🎶"

The calming musical medleys coming from the shops nearby only added to your pining and hopeless sighs.

"Floats around town in a golden gown. 🎶 Born in a castle on a cloud. 🎵"

You really did think he was just… like a dream. He had a soul of gold, was kind and wasn't judgmental of anyone he met. Part of you wished and dreamed and perhaps waited… for it to be you instead of Mettaton. So you could be the one taking Papyrus on dates.

"Magnolia, prettiest girl that I know.~ 🎵 Stars in her eyes, handpicked from the skies, beautiful soul. ~ 🎶"

You could do it. You could make Papyrus happy… He might not be able to have those fancy dinners in skyrise hotels and front row seats to an opera or anything… but you could take him on ice cream dates. You could go with him to the beach and spray water at each other. Laughing, grinning like an idiot, and making memories filled with joy and love. You could hold his hand - kiss the back of his glove as a goodbye, and dance with him in the glow of the sunset.

"How can I compete with her? Perfection is the only word ~ 🎶 I think of when I think of Magnolia! ~ 🎵"

Ugh! With every lyric of this sad song flowing from the gelato place next to you, you wanted to scream. It was as if the universe was making fun of you for your hopeless romantics and useless thoughts. What was the point of imagining it if it wasn't ever going to happen? What was the point in planning all those fun little outings and romantic gestures if someone else was occupying his time..?

"She doesn't know that the world is turning just for her~… 🎶"

Oh if only Papyrus knew that he had so many people who wanted to be with him, maybe he'd have given you a chance if he knew that he was at the center of your attention at several hours in the day.

"I wish I could be Magnolia. 🎵"

"shoot your shot."

You jolted up at the new voice coming from behind you, your eyes wide and hand coming out of the water. You drew it up to your chest as you sat stiff like a dear in headlights while you stared at the short, stubby skeleton. He never said much else other than puns whenever you came around. He was amicable, much alike Papyrus, but he was never as open as his brother was with you. He always seemed to have this reserved nature, despite as many people knowing him as much as they knew Papyrus.

"Magnolia, she can move oceans and rivers with ease. 🎶"

"I- w-what??" You stuttered out, sweating under his observant gaze.

"it's not too late, you know." He did do this, apparently. All the cryptic messages with no context. You'd heard from Undyne that he did it to mess with people sometimes… Was he messing with you?

"A word from her lips, her sirens kiss will send you straight into abyss. 🎵"

"I…" Your cheeks heated up, whether with anxiety or embarrassment, you weren't sure, but Sans' eyelights trailed to your cheeks briefly before his unwavering gaze shifted right back to your avoidant eyes. "Hah… ahaha, a-are you talking about Papyrus?"

He didn't even answer you - just gave you an expectant look with a raised bone brow and a slight quirk to his semi-permanent grin.

You squirmed under his knowing glances. Stars, older siblings were insane to deal with as a love interest. Were you a love interest?? "He's… ahem- he's on his date. I couldn't- I mean - he's dating Mettaton - t-they've been together for three months now." You laughed nervously as your throat clamped up on itself, and you were unable to stutter out anything else.

"Magnolia, I wish she'd give her secrets away. 🎶"

"mm…" He hummed in response. Stars, why was he so hard to read??? "and?"

"Huh?" You gawked at him for a moment.

"and? you can still tell paps how you feel."

"W-what!? No, no, no, I couldn't. Ever. Especially not now." You shook your head furiously.

"but you do like him though?"

Your face went red, blood rushing up as you stiffened. You almost wanted to run away, but despite how easily Sans was able to coax all this information out of you (that he likely already knew), he wasn't exactly interrogating you.

"Enchants everyone and I think it'd be fun to be like her someday, 🎵"

You couldn't deny it… So you just nodded silently, almost ashamed to admit it. "But I… don't want to ruin what he has already…" You whispered out, wringing your wrists guiltily.

"trust me, kid, i don't think you'd be ruining anything." He replied with ease - and perhaps a little salt.

Your eyes nearly bugged right out of your skull. You'd never seen Sans so much as look at someone with contempt before - and here he was saying that you'd do Papyrus good by ruining his budding relationship?? "Do you… not like Mettaton..?" You were almost afraid to ask.

"But I cannot compete with her… 🎶"

His eyelights drifted to the side, and you could see his grin tighten ever so slightly. "eh…" He replied, shrugging. "i just think that he's… a little much." When he looked back at you though, his lax expression returned. "i think you're a better match for him." He winked. "but you didn't hear it from me."

"Perfection is the only word I think of when I think of Magnolia!~🎵"

You couldn't help it, his approval of you caused a giggle to escape from your lips, your heart feeling much less heavy knowing that Sans supported you. Still… "Are you sure I should… tell him?"

He nodded, taking a seat beside you on the edge of the fountain. "yeah. i think he needs someone a little… less flashy than mettaton. i wanna see him settle down eventually."

"But… I don't even think he likes me-"

"heh." Sans' grin grew slightly wider, a knowing look in his crinkling eye sockets. "don't worry about that. just trust me."

Sans may have been known for his pranks, but they were never malicious… so… he wouldn't play a prank on you to make you look like an idiot in front of the person you liked, right?

"She doesn't know that the world is turning just for her. 🎶"

"go on a beach date and dance in the rain with him. he'd like it."

"H-how did you know!?" You stiffened again, embarrassed and a little too loud as your hand slapped over your mouth by reflex as your face heated up again and he delved into laughter.

"heheheh! you looked like the type to be into all that romantic stuff. besides, paps loves that stuff. he's the type of guy to show up at your door with a hundred dozen roses on your anniversary. so i hope you have vases."

"I wish I could be Magnolia. 🎵"

There was a long bout of silence between the two of you as the music in the background faded out slowly. You were thinking long and hard about what the short skeleton brother had suggested, pursed lips and knitted eyebrows eventually relaxing.

"You really think..?"

"i know."

"Magnolia~…🎶"

Your phone began to ring and you fumbled to pull it out of your pocket.

It was Papyrus… 

Your breath hitched, and for a moment you glanced at Sans staring at the fairy lights with an almost smug grin.

You smiled at him thankfully when you saw that his eyelights drifted to the corner of his eye sockets to see if you would pickup the phone call.

You did.

"Hey Paps, what's up?"

Alright, so he does like to sew- nothing big or elaborate, but more mending things together. He actually ripped the fluff off his hood in a fit of self-loathing, but decided to sew it back on where his sleeves were torn off.

He also likes to wander to see the sights. He'll do it wherever, but prefers quieter scenes and nature if he can.

(As for his kisses, he pulls you in with gravity, so it feels magnetic- like you can't resist. Like you're falling into his embrace. He likes to kiss a little trail from the closest part of your cheek to him down to your lips. There's a faint feeling of soft sand on your face afterwards)

Well, he's honestly a bit of a friendly bully- lots of tripping you up or tagging you with the glittering stardust he's surrounded by. (Yes, you will glitter from it for *ages*.)

It progresses more the more he likes you- he'll trip you less, but you'll always have some of his dust trail with you. He'll also pull you slowly towards him with his inescapable gravity to get a kiss.

The most worrying part is when he hunts you for sport. He'll pull you close and raspily whisper to you to 'run', then let you go. You'll always get a headstart since he's fast and has an advantage, but he'll always find you (his reward is kisses.)

Well, he's on the shorter side at 4'10 and likes curry ketchup

He's also amused by gravity much like a cat so, if needing stimulation, he'll knock things off of counters and the like (or trip people, so be careful!)

He usually has a blank face, but you'll know he likes you if he uses his fantastic grasp of gravity magic to make you orbit him like his mini-nebula (or, if you *really* have to be on the ground, he'll put in the effort to orbit you instead.)
