The WIP

First sketch

My first try - below - went horrrrrribly wrong but I loved how Val looked so I just couldn't throw her away. (again grey, white, and black working in my favour...)

Second attempt -below- I tried with these splodges to get some semblance of reality with them but well, they're the wrong colour and they're splodges. I also have NO CLUE why I added the white lines - at all

Hey ho..

So what I had to do was Paint around Val in black acrylic. I lost a lot of the colour from the original but I needed to do that in order to push on. (I also researched the Colombian Natterjack toads too. They're pretty sweet to be honest

What I had to do next is paint white OVER the splodges and build the little amphibians up, if that makes sense. So every layer is highlighted where it needs to me. I frigging love chalk pens! They work so so well and add so much dimension to everything.

Almost there -below- the toadies just need their eyes.

I gave them there eyes and I'm 50/50 about whether or not I'll add resin to them to make them look wet but I'm pretty sure I'm happy with them now.

Harvey is bottom right toad because he has the biggest eyes. Pooooor aunty Val.

Title - Aunty Val is Appalled

I like the idea that Aunty Val is a Witch. It's been a long run thing from "The League of Gentlemen", so I ran with that..

Normally I take a still image and paint it onto a 10x10cm canvas and that's it but because of all of the issues I've had with it - the image really had to change.

So the story I've made up for this picture is that Aunty Val has *accidentally* turned her family, the Denton's into toads (Colombian Natterjack s aka the devils toad to be exact) and is thoroughly appalled at herself. She's in her own personal hell.

In fact I've decided that rather than scrap this on I'm going to keep it cartoony but get rid of the background entirely. Surround her with toads instead on a black void.

Soz guys I'm disappointed with myself - going to try and find an easier Aunty Val pic I think... She's not going well... :(

It's more the background that isnt going right... Going to start again.

I use white chalk pen to bring dimension but I think with this it's making it too cartoony.

I normally add colour onto black/grey and white and her shape is generally correct... It's just that dang wallpaper.

Going to find a less dark pic.

I think this is my favourite movie. Of all time.

I've seen it maybe 70 times at this point and each time - it just becomes something else. You see new things and I think that it simply is THE most beautifully made film I've ever seen. I've watched it forwards, backwards, with no sound, every which way.. it works.

And that is despite the horror and violence and cannibalism which ngl I do enjoy...

||Ben Wheatley confirmed in the commentary that they're eating people & Sainsbury's mushrooms -the commentary is worth a listen too because they do sound like they're having fun!||

The film is and remains sooooo undeniably hopeful, even at the end. That's what I see anyway.

It's about friendship and certainly not in a cheesy way.

I recommend everyone to watch it (except for epileptics because you'll probably die.) xksx

Title - Flux of Time

Painted 29th and 30th March 2024

Acrylic, chalk pen, perm marker, and pencil

I'm really pleased with this considering it was just a few hours

(all of these blocks are 3.9inches x3.9inches (or 10cmx10cm) and I struggle when it's a lot of detail in such a small space but I still like the dimension despite the lack of colour.

I'm going to do what I normally do and give it a black border and write "I am my own man" around the border in chalk pen instead of writing it on this because I hate my handwriting and don't want to ruin it!

Will post WIP next.
