I love you, but you love him, and he loves me
A/N: Sometimes I forget that the things that I say have a tendency to age like milk... apologies for the lack of updates and fics. I've been drowning in schoolwork since the semester started and I haven't had much of a chance to work on an extended fic like Our Time. The current plan is to have this post up for February, put up a Johanna fic in April/May, and then finish up Our Time over the summer (hopefully). Anyways, here's some Clove fluff that's a week late for Valentine's Day! :D
oh, thanks for 100 followers! I am so happy that people enjoy my content without a regular schedule. thank you so so much again!
TW: underage drinking/smoking, brief mention of weed, small fighting scene, reader is put into uncomfortable romantic situation
Pairing: Clove x GN! Reader (Rivals to Lovers in 2x speed)
Summary: You love Clove. She likes Cato. Cato likes you. Your life is a comedic love triangle until your best friend's drunken disaster causes you to connect with Clove and discover something new about her.
Tumblr media
“On your left.”
Catelyn gives you a quick warning before flipping you on the back and slamming you against the mat. You squirm against her grip for a moment before spotting a weakness in her legs.
An opening.
You grab her leg and pull her to the ground before taking her hands and pinning them to the ground.
“Don’t count me out yet.” You sneer as she scoffs.
“Fucker.” She mumbles as a buzzer goes off in the distance.
You immediately jump off of her and offer a hand up, which Catelyn begrudgingly takes.
“Trying to impress your girl?” She raises an eyebrow before you shove her aside.
Clove’s staring at the two of you, well, just you since Catelyn’s stepped off the mat to grab a drink of water. Her eyes immediately drift off to look elsewhere as you let out a sigh.
You wish she’d look at you longer, as much as she looked at Cato.
It’s funny, in an ironic way.
You love her.
She loves him.
And he’s paused his sparring to walk over to you.
Probably to ask you on a date or to go drinking or to go do something with romantic undertones that you don’t want to do.
So he loves you.
Catelyn had egged the two of you on before realizing that you wanted nothing more than for him to leave you alone. You didn’t want to refuse Cato’s invitations - he was the choice for a Hunger Games tribute in the near future, and that’d piss off more people than your trickiness could outmaneuver.
Perhaps running through a nearby window would be the best way to avoid him?
…And he’s right in front of you.
You glance behind him, only to see Clove's jaw tighten.
Fuck.
~
An invite.
“That's all he wanted?” Catelyn teases as you make your way to the place where Cato always invited you after sparring practice.
It wasn't like the two of you were going to be alone. It was a tradition for the top contenders for this year's Hunger Games to engage in a few… adult activities before the Reaping occurred. This way, the two tributes shipped off could get to enjoy a little bit of adulthood before heading to the Capital.
It wasn't anything too awful, just some cheap booze and a few blunts to pass around. Any people that passed you all by would simply look the other way - who'd want to risk being harassed by a group of teenagers?
You didn't usually partake beyond a few sips from some cheap bottle of booze - someone needed to carry Catelyn home, after all.
When the two of you slip behind a pair of buildings, a few boys around Cato's age wave you over.
“Let's get this over with.” You grumble, hoping to spend this evening without uncomfortably resting in Cato's arms.
~
You failed.
Horrendously.
When you arrived, Cato threw an arm around you and hasn't let you go since. You're tempted to drink more so you don't remember what he's said or done, but seeing your friend nearly face plant into a campfire has you rethinking that decision.
As if matters couldn't get any worse, Clove arrived just in time to see Cato place a kiss on your cheek. She huffs before glaring at the two of you from a fair distance away.
This time, you notice, her glare isn't directed at you.
She's glaring at him.
~
Catelyn's barely able to stumble forward as you throw an arm around your shoulder. She excitedly points at a lamppost and tries to point at it, but she ends up falling out of your grasp and onto the barren road.
“Catelyn, c’mon,” You try to coax your friend from the ground, but she shakes her head, “We've got to get home before sunrise.”
“Nu-uh!” She slurs, face-down in the pavement.
You sigh, pinching the bridge of your nose until you hear footsteps come from behind you.
“Need some help?”
In all of her brazen glory, your knight-in-shining-armor (a black leather jacket, a plain t-shirt, and blue jeans), Clove, offers to help.
“If you don't mind, I know you might be busy with someone else.” You quietly say as she shakes her head.
“I wanted to take a walk to clear my head, away from everyone else.”  She grabs Catelyn from the ground, who whines like a petulant child, before you hoist one of Catelyn’s arms over your shoulder.
Clove does the same, and the three of you walk in silence until a biting question slips off her tongue.
“Do you like Cato?”
“Absolutely not.” The answer leaves your lips before you can refine the words with a bit more thought. “We're friends, sure, but I don't feel anything for him.”
Relief escapes her lips as she takes a deep breath out, then in. She smiles, as do you in return.
“Good, good. I was worried that you were into him.”
“Why?” You stop, which causes Clove to stop.
“I thought- I thought I liked him, but I saw him kissing you and… I didn't like how it made me feel.” She blushes at her honesty as you bite your lip.
“If you like him, Clove, you can have him. I certainly don't want him.”
She harshly laughs before turning to look at you.
“Don't you get it? All of those times that I saw you two together, I thought I was jealous of you. Today, after seeing him draped over you, I realized that I'm jealous of him.”
Her confession leaves you breathless as you pause to consider her words.
She… likes me.
“Clove, I…” It's your turn to get nervous as you try to meet Clove’s unwavering gaze. “I really, really like you too.”
Catelyn, in a moment of drunken clarity, lifts her head up to look at the both of you before loudly sighing.
“Just kiss already, you idiots!” She lets go of the both of you to (not-so) gracefully fall on the ground as your arm finds its way around her.
You lean in to kiss her, before pausing.
“Is this okay?” You mumble, centimeters away from her lips.
A mischievous smile slips onto her face as she answers by kissing you back.
You wouldn't have many nights like this again, but this night would always be special to you.

Our Time - Finnick x GN!Reader
Tumblr media
Summary: You're the Capitol's little sibling - caring, kind, and sunny. He's the Capitol darling - beautiful, charming, and cherished. Your time has always overlapped with his - he was your mentor, after all. When his nickname for you helps you win your Hunger Games, you thought that you had put the games behind you. After the announcement of the 75th Hunger Games, you're back in the arena, but with Finnick at your side. With choices to make and alliances to form, you're forced to show your loyalty to the one you love most of all: Finnick. What you don't expect, however, is for him to kiss you... in front of all of his adoring Capitol fans and the twelve districts. As you both navigate your feelings and the games (and what comes after), you're forced to choose between who you were, as Sunny, and who you want to be, yourself. Luckily, Finnick likes you just the way you are.

At dusk, the nightmares and monsters start to play
A/N: two fics (barely) in a month??? haven't done this since September (god it's been a long three months, thank you all for bearing with me through the end of the year). hope everyone has had a good holiday season and is looking forward to the new year! (there's gonna be more action in the next part, this is the set up dw 🫶)
as a future heads-up, most of the chapters will be smaller in size so I can have the time to complete one a month while I'm working on school work. I'm aiming for 1.5-2k words a chapter, but there may be more depending on what I have due at that time.
TW: medical trauma, trauma in general, sad vibes, reader has a knee injury
Pairing: Finnick x GN! Reader (romantic)
Summary: You pay Katniss a visit in the infirmary, only to find that she's more remorseful than revenge-filled, which is a good sign for your other knee. Afterwards, you seek your room and find a comforting memory there, along with Finnick.
(<- Previous Part | Next Part -> | Series Masterlist)

Nightmares.
That was something you had grown to live with, as a victor of the Hunger Games. Your mentors had your back when it came to the nightmares, at first - all you saw when you went to sleep were the dead tributes that you had killed or seen killed. Why were you the one to live, out of all of them?
You were hesitate to approach Katniss after she had a bad nightmare and ran off - she was probably one of the last people that wanted to see you. The last time she saw you, she put an arrow into your knee that gave you the cane and limp that you’re known for in District 13.
Although you tried to tell Haymitch it wasn’t a good idea, he insisted.
“What harm could it cause you to see her?” Haymitch asks before his eyes land on your cane. “…that doesn’t count, Sunny.”
“You’re lucky I still like both of you after that happened.” You vaguely gesture to your knee before grabbing your cane and standing up. “I’ll go find her when she needs me.”
You were sure that Katniss didn’t trust you, but you were positive that she trusted the nurses around you even less. You couldn’t blame her - you were the exact same way. President Snow had insisted that his victors were in the best shape possible, so you had to go to routine doctor’s visits. The prodding and poking was enough to drive anyone nuts, but the vague memory of needles and surgeries sends a shudder down your back as you quicken your pace.
It’s better if she kills me than some poor nurse or doctor.
~
Once you approach the hospital ward, you slowly make your way to Katniss’s room. You peak inside her room to see her sitting up in bed with a younger girl brushing her hair.
You lightly knock, as to not startle the two girls, before making your way into the room.
“Sorry about your knee.” Katniss grumbles as you collapse into a nearby chair and let out an exhausted sigh.
“It’s okay. I probably would’ve done a lot worse in your scenario.” You shrug before leaning your cane against the hospital bed.
“It’s not okay-“ She tries to argue, but you aren’t having any of it.
“What’s done is done, and I have to live with the consequences. You should save your care for a much more worthy cause.” You see her fidgeting with the pearl that Peeta gave her. “We’ll get him back, I promise.”
“They won’t want to.”
“Does it matter what they want? You have more power than you think, Katniss.” The girl behind Katniss starts to look familiar as your eyes glance between the two girls. “You’re Primrose Everdeen, right?”
The girl doesn’t say anything until Katniss lightly bumps her shoulder.
“I am.” She quietly answers while continuing to brush Katniss’s hair.
The three of you linger in the room with contemplative silence before a man comes to bring Katniss to President Coin and Plutarch.
Primrose sets the hairbrush aside as you fetch your cane from the side of the bed.
“Those are nurse scrubs, right?” You ask as you grab the bed’s railing in order to get onto your feet.
“I’m trying to help out, as much as I can.” She answers before starting to make the hospital bed.
“If you’re anything like your sister, you’ll be a great nurse.” You offer her a warm smile that she quickly replicates.
Perhaps the future isn’t as messed up as I thought it was.
~
You return to the living quarters side of District 13, only to be bombarded by a few small children. The younger kids always ran up to you when they hear the click click click of your cane hitting the floor, as you often had squirreled away treats or extra bits of food from meals. You were willing to share, so you offered them a few small candies that you had snatched from the front desk of the hospital ward.
“Don’t give yourselves a stomach ache,” You warn them with a wagging finger, “otherwise, you’ll end up back there.”
The kids promise to be careful before running off, and you continue your journey back to your room. You had been discharged from the hospital ward, after your strong insistence that you were fine, which you were, but you had to have daily check-ups to make sure that your knee was alright.
You had the appointments in the morning - it wasn’t like you were getting any sleep, anyways - but your progress continued to be positive. You weren’t going to be in fighting shape for a long time, and you might limp for the rest of your life, but the cane may get to be retired in another week or two.
Your bed can’t be found soon enough, and when you do find it, you set your cane on the ground before laying down on the bed.
You had given so much effort into your capital duties - being a “model citizen”, doing exactly as President Snow asked - but you had never been as tired as you were now. The simple act of movement left you exhausted, the injury be damned, and all you wanted to do was curl up in bed and sleep.
You couldn’t. Although you weren’t physically strong, your determination to keep going kept you mentally well. You had to be strong, you had to be sunny, for the District 12 children, for Katniss, and for Finnick.
Finnick had a rough adjustment to life in District 13, due to the absence of Mags and Annie as well as your injury. Despite being drugged up, once he heard that you were going under for surgery, he knocked out two guards and nearly stabbed a third with a pair of scissors before Haymitch pulled him off of the guard. Finnick had stayed by your side for days after he had been discharged and you were recovering.
He didn’t leave your side after you were discharged from the hospital wing. He was the one who helped you back onto your feet and he encouraged you to keep going, even when you felt like giving up.
Finnick was quiet when you weren’t around, however. He would lock himself in his room for hours, only coming out to talk with Haymitch or to get the next meal. He was never like that with you - his smile was never so bright as he carefully embraced you. The two of you would talk for hours about anything and everything - it reminded you of your days back in the Victor’s Village in District 4.
Cooking for four was a learned habit of yours - you didn’t want Mags to have to cook or eat alone, Annie struggled to take care of herself, and Finnick was so busy that he didn’t often have the time to have good meals.
You quickly distributed the food into four different containers. Two went straight into your refrigerator - Finnick would be home late on a flight from the Capitol, so you wanted to have dinner with him. You sealed up the other two meals, placed them into a small satchel, and began your trip to Mags’ house.
She warmly welcomed you in before putting a kettle on. You handed her the meal, which she took with a gracious smile. Mags grabbed two forks out of her silverware drawer, and you took one of them before joining her in the dining room.
You couldn’t stay long, as you had another meal to deliver, but you did enjoy a nice glass of tea and a few bites of food. With Mags waving you off, you ventured across the way to Annie’s home.
You softly knock on the door, as to not startle her, before the door slams open. Annie appears while rapidly wiping the tears off of her face. She tries to speak, but you shake her head before handing her the food.
“Don’t worry about getting the container back, I have plenty.” You gently reassure her as she nods before shakily closing the door.
With a soft breath, you go back to your own house to enjoy a bit of well-earned peace and quiet. A couple hours go by before someone knocks on your door.
You open the door, only to see Finnick standing there, all dressed up in Capital wear. Despite everything he’s wearing, he still is your charming, very attractive mentor.
“Are you in the mood for company?” He asks with an irresistible smile.
“You’re lucky I made extras, pretty boy.” You tease before letting him in.
“Sunny?”
You sit up at the sound of his voice, albeit slowly so you don’t injury yourself.
“Finnick!” You break out of your thoughts to greet him as you gesture for him to sit next to you on your bed.
“Are you alright?” His eyebrows scrunch as he inspects you for injuries before gently sitting next to you.
His hand finds yours, and your fingers intertwine as you softly kiss his cheek.
“I’m good, I promise. Haymitch wanted me to see Katniss in the hospital ward.”
“She didn’t have a bow and arrow this time, right?” A teasing smile rests on his face as you lightly shove him away.
“Very funny, Finnick.” You roll your eyes before looking over at him. “How are you doing?”
“Better now that I’m with you, honey.” He leans in to kiss you, and you indulge him in one kiss before locking eyes with him.
He lies to you about how he feels at times. You know it’s because he doesn’t want you to worry, but you end up worrying more because of it. This time, you only see merriment and a twinkle of mischief in his eyes as he looks at you.
That’s Finnick being Finnick.
“Isn’t it almost meal time?” You ask before grabbing your cane.
“It’s getting close, but we should get going if we want to make it there on time.”
“Hey, what’s that supposed to mean?” You poke Finnick with the bottom of your cane as he happily laughs.
You rest your head on his shoulder as you enjoy this moment of tranquility and happiness. You don’t know what tomorrow’s going to look like, but you can only hope that it’ll be just as good, if not better, than today.

Hi I was wondering if you have any wip or reqs as of right now?
thank you dearly for this ask, anon, I realized that I haven't updated my WIP in a few months 0_0 ...it was a long semester, but I apologize for the wait.
Updated WIP for any curious parties, but I'll outline the information here.
I'm going to continue to work on the Finnick series (that will have a masterlist posted soon, I promise). That will be my main goal for my monthly posts. I did also receive my first request, so I will also work on that as soon as I can. It's a Clove fic that I'm excited to start working on!
also I may potentially have another chapter of the finnick x reader out today if I can get the formatting and taglist done and up to date!

The time between dusk and dawn
A/N: sorry for being gone a little longer than a month, I've been trying to finish the semester as well as I can. this is meant to be a small in-between chapter, something to get me back into the flow of the story before I rewatch Mockingjay Part 1. I hope you all enjoy this!
TW: reader sustains an knee injury, mentions of kidnapping, implied medical trauma
Pairing: Finnick x GN! Reader (romantic)
Summary: After arriving at District 13, you're in for a rough transition as you get used to a new environment and a new injury. Luckily, you've got someone special by your side to help you through everything.
(<- Previous Part | Next Part -> | Series Masterlist)

Not another word was exchanged between the two of you as you tried to fight off sleep. You were mentally weary from the Hunger Games - were your friends okay? - and physically tired from the fighting and running.
What about your friends, your family, back in District 4?
You try to speak, but your words are far from your tongue as you finally let sleep overtake you. Finnick squeezes your arms and places a small kiss on your forehead as everything fades to black.
The steady pattern of beeping medical equipment rustles you from your slumber. You can’t move your knee as a blinding light comes across your vision. Out of natural habit, you thrash around before a pair of strong arms bound you to the table.
~
“Watch out for them… they bite.” A gruff voice says as a needle slides into your arm.
You try to continue to fight them off, but an unusual bout of sleepiness takes over you. In a few seconds, you’re back into the darkness once again.
~
Once the sedative wears off, you’re back awake, but the medical equipment is much softer in the background. With no bright light in front of you, you can focus more on your surroundings. You’re not in with the stronger man and surgical weapons - a surgery room, you reason. Out of all of the unfamiliarity, there is something familiar.
“Finnick.” You breathlessly say as his head turns to you.
“You’re awake.” His hand meets yours on the bed as he leans forward and brushes some hair out of your face.
“My knee…” You take your other hand and try to feel down your leg, but Finnick catches your hand and tosses it to the side.
“The doctors took care of it. How are you, honey?”
“Scared about everything… any news about-“
“It’s not good,” His head hangs low for a minute, “they’re in the Capitol.”
“All of them?”
“The ones who are still alive.”
“Finnick.” You squeeze his hand as his eyes snap up to meet yours. “I knew this would happen, but…”
“But?” His voice got soft, as if he knows what you’re going to say next.
“I thought it was going to be me. I volunteered for Annie and Mags. It’s supposed to be me suffering, not them.”
“Don’t say that. I’m glad you’re here with me.” His hand ghosts your knee before returning to his side. “I’d have been torn apart if you had been taken.”
His eyes grow distant, but you’re quick to pull him back with a tug on his arm.
“I’m here, I promise. I’m gonna need you, darling. Who else am I gonna lean on when I need you to support me?”
~
“Finnick, stop laughing!”
Despite your scolding, your smile matches his as you attempt to take a step forward with your bandaged knee. You lean against the support rail as you stop to take a breath.
Finnick raises an eyebrow as he stands a few feet away.
“Are you sure you don’t need help, sweetheart?” His words are teasing, but you can see the genuineness in his eyes.
“I have to get used to this new knee one way or another.” You try to take another step forward, but your leg is unwilling to move.
You look back to the beginning of the hallway, which is six feet away from you.
It’s a foot farther from yesterday, and that’s enough progress for me.
“I changed my mind. I do need help.” You reach out to Finnick with one hand as you use the railing as a crutch.
He immediately comes to your rescue by throwing your free arm around his shoulder.
“You don’t have to go this alone. I’m always here to help you.” Finnick softly says as you both slowly make your way back to the hospital room. He pauses for a moment to press a soft kiss to your forehead, which makes you smile to yourself.
“I know.” You mumble to yourself.
But I can’t help but feel useless. What good is sunshine if every day is a cloudy day?
~
“The cane’s a nice touch.” Haymitch jokes as you sit in-between Finnick and him.
“I’m not in fighting shape, so this will have to do.” You shrug before Finnick grabs your hand under the table. “How’s Katniss?”
“Not good.” Haymitch says before taking a large drink of water. “You’d probably do better if you talked to her. She’s not exactly… pleased with my decision to take her instead of Peeta.”
“If you’re indirectly asking me to speak with Katniss, I’ll do it.” You set your cane aside as you look at Finnick. “Are you alright?”
You had seen his smile slip for a moment, but it reappears once you show some concern.
“I’m alright, Sunny.”
Your voice drops to a whisper as you say, “You don’t have to stay strong for me. I know you miss Annie and Mags too.”
You squeeze his hand, not expecting a response, but after a moment, he squeezes your hand back as if to say I know.
And, for a moment, you believe that everything’s going to be okay. Even if it’s a lie you tell yourself to sleep better at night.

The Chip Off Her Shoulder
A/N: A small drabble to hold everyone off as I attempt to finish some major writing assignments (that I should be writing now, whoops) towards the end of the semester. I won't be putting out anything longer until after the first couple weeks of December due to exams and papers a plenty. Hope everyone is well, though. (Also RV comebacks send my brain into inspiration mode so more drabbles may be on the way.)
TW: Missing person, magical mischief, a mention of punishment (?)
Pairing: Yeri x Gender-Neutral Reader (implied romantic on reader's end)
Summary: The princess feels lost without you, but Yeri has no clue that you've been by her side the whole time.
Tumblr media
“We should be looking over every village, scouring every forest-“
“Princess, it’s not possible-“ The head of the royal guard tries to calm the frantic princess, but Yeri will hear none of it.
“What about them, huh?” In a fit of frustration, she throws a stack of carefully-placed parchment on the floor. “They could be scared, lonely, hurt-“
“You won’t get anywhere like this, not now.” The solider grabs her shoulder, and she stops her movement to glare at him.
“They’d tell me to leave you alone, but I’d really like you to step away before I deck you.”
“Yes, Princess.” The guard quickly lets go of her before bowing and escorting the rest of the guard away from the princess’ study.
Yeri exasperatedly leans against her desk, head hanging low, until a small blue butterfly approaches a nearby window.
When her eyes flicker up expectantly, hoping to see you, the butterfly catches her attention instead. She, in child-like admiration, opens the window and gazes as the butterfly flies into the room.
Bugs would terrify most of the royal staff, but Yeri found enjoyment in the small creatures of the natural world. They were small yet mighty, a blip in the history of time but a crucial part of the ecosystem.
This blue butterfly was no stranger to her - it had been coming to her for about a week now, providing her with a small amount of comfort when there was no one who truly understood her emotions but you.
You were her everything, her guiding North Star in a sea of uncertainty. To find you was to find her way, but where were you?
~
This form was unusually to you, as flight was not something you were usually comfortable with. You, for the most part, preferred to keep both of your feet firmly planted on the ground, lest something bad happened in the sky.
Being the princess’s confidante and closest ally had its up and downs, the downs mostly being her absolute obliviousness to your affection to her. Everyone could see the lovesick look on your eyes when you would bring her freshly picked roses from the castle gardens, or how you’d offer to dance with her so she could avoid suitors for only a few more minutes. You’d do anything, die on a blade or less extreme versions of self-sacrifice, to keep her smiling and happy.
Perhaps it was less of a curse to be her source of happiness while she searched for you. Irony would be your word of choice, but as long as her affection was on you, would you really care?
You’d never had a chip on your shoulder about the way she treated you, that’s just how it was. She’d grow up and marry someone from a faraway land who would sweep her off her feet, and you’d be nothing more than a forgotten memory. Being her good fortune in a trying time was all you ever wanted.
Butterflies were a beautiful creature, so your punishment for protecting the princess wasn’t as bad as you’d thought it would be.

Hallow’s Eve
A/N: I'm early for once, so I may be able to post again this month?? Who knows, I just wanted to write a little something for my favorite otome boy.
TW: Animal abuse (a literal hanging spider), ambiguous time and setting, and I'm down very bad for this man.
Summary: A small, quite frightening Halloween direction sends Solomon's latest ploy to fool the residents of the Devlidom into motion. Unfortunately, you're caught in the crossfire, but he's more than happy to make up for his mistake.
Tumblr media
“Is that… a hanging spider?”
As you set aside the armful of Devildom Halloween decorations, you can’t help but admire (and stare in slight disgust) at the large, very real spider that is dangling from the front entrance. When one of its legs twitches to show signs of life, you jump before quickly backing away towards the living room.
“Boo.”
You scream at the top of your lungs before throwing one of the stuffed plushies that you set aside earlier in the direction of the voice.
Solomon, from behind you, catches it with one hand before tossing it behind him. He leans against the doorframe with a shit-eating smirk on his face.
You sigh before trying to calm your heart as he quietly approaches you.
“Did I scare you? I didn’t mean to-“
“Uh-huh.” You roll your eyes as he picks up one of the decorations and sets it on a table. “Did you put that up there?”
“I don’t seem to remember that…” Solomon smiles as you stare daggers into his back. “Not a fan of live decorations?”
“I feel bad for the poor creature,” Your eyes flick up to the spider who has ceased all movement for now, “don’t you?”
“A bit, but in all fairness, you weren’t the one I was planning to scare.”
You take a small ghost, one that you hand-painted with Luke, and set it beside the plush black cat that Solomon had taken earlier. He stands next to you, a playful cheshire cat-like smile on his face, as you turn towards him.
“And what human world tradition were you trying to convince them of now?” You fold your eyes as he leans in closer.
“Doesn’t the spider remind you of something?” His eyes land on your lips as his face stops inches from yours.
You look away for a moment, just to recover a bit of dignity and to not cave in immediately, before you coyly respond.
“You’re the reason mistletoe is banned in the House of Lamentation-“
“-that was because Mammon hung them everywhere, and Satan nearly destroyed the house after finding you and Lucifer underneath one-“
“-but I’ll play your game, Solomon.” You cut off his words before taking his hand and leading him to the front entrance.
Once you stop, one of his hands finds your waist as the other is placed on the doorframe, trapping you in his embrace. You place one hand on his chest before placing the other behind his neck.
You’re not sure who makes the first move, but the feeling of his lips on yours is one that always makes your heart beat out of control.
Once Solomon backs away from you, you pause for a breath as he sheepishly looks to the side. Your phone dings, and you nervously bite your lip when you see who’s texting you.
Asmodeus: OMD, is it really true that kissing someone underneath a hanging spider is good luck?
“You couldn’t wait?”
You show Solomon your phone, and he laughs before shrugging.
“Of course not. How could I resist a plan to irritate everyone else while gaining more of your affection?”

Moonlight Sunrise
A/N: I'm trying to aim for a fic a month for the months that I am in school, and I know I am cutting it close to the deadline, but I made it! I hope you enjoy this third part - it doesn't flow as smoothly as other parts since it was written in three disjointed writing sessions, but I like the final product. See you all in October or whenever I can write next. :)
TW: Canon-typical violence, small bit of bodily gore and blood, brief torture mention, reader throws knives
Pairing: Finnick x GN! Reader (romantic)
Summary: The next day of the 75th Hunger Games brings new allies, new feeling, new foes, new adventure, and new tragedy in your life. Contemplation is not an option - one must act with haste and caution if they want to keep their home safe.
(<- Previous Part | Next Part -> | Series Masterlist)
Tumblr media
You and Finnick both watch Katniss and Peeta say a final goodbye to the female morphling who has died. The cannon is a bleak reminder of all that you’ve lost, and Finnick gives a quick look back to ensure that the mutts have not followed you on to the beach.
The trident finds its way into Finnick’s grasp as he scouts the perimeter. You walk a step closer to Katniss and Peeta as an airship comes from the sky to retrieve the body.
“She sacrificed herself for me and I don’t even know her name.” Peeta looks down, and you can’t help but feel bad.
You take a few steps back to let them talk for a moment as the sunrise distracts you from what’s going on.
It’s a beautiful day, and it’ll be even more beautiful when I’m out of here. The sunrise always looked beautiful from the beaches in District Four.
Finnick finds himself fishing, a comfort for the both of you, and his trident lands a catch. You weren’t sure if District 12 kids were used to having fish for breakfast, but they would make do.
You all would because that’s the only choice you have.
Adapt or die.
~
Katniss devours the fish in front of her as you and Finnick take small bites of the fish. You finish yours, and Finnick adds another piece of meat to your hands before you can object.
Peeta opens a clam with his knife, and he takes the pearl of the clam to give to Katniss. You nudge Finnick, who rolls his eyes at the gesture, with your elbow. You bite down on your lip to suppress your laugh as Katniss observes the pearl in her hand.
A scream from a forest pulls everyone’s attention to the other side of the arena. You all quickly stand up as you watch the wave crash into one sector of the Cornucopia, and as it crashes over the center, it spreads to the other parts of the Cornucopia in smaller waves. The water comes crashing close to all of you, and your legs are soaked by the waves. It’s refreshing to you, but the dull reminder of a cannon and an airship brings you back to reality.
It all could be gone, just like that.
“Someone’s here.” Katniss grabs an arrow as Peeta ducks. Finnick’s stray hand covers your abdomen as his hand tightly grips his trident.
Make it more obvious, Finnick.
Finnick peeks from the bushes for a moment as you hide behind them
“Johanna.” He softly says before moving towards the water again.
Your eyes widen as you immediately follow behind Finnick.
“Johanna!” Finnick waves his hand as you look back and gesture for Peeta and Katniss to follow.
“They’re friends,” You say as you navigate the rocky beach, “and I’m friends with Johanna too. You’ll be fine with us.”
They both, reluctantly, follow behind you as you approach the three people in the distance.
~
“We were all the way deep in the jungle, where I thought it was safe,” Johanna, covered in blood, holds her axe to the side, “I thought it was water. Turned out to be blood. Hot, thick blood that was coming down-“
“Tick-tok, tick-tok.” Wiress approaches Johanna, who pushes her away immediately.
“-and it was choking us. We were stumbling around, gagging on it, blind. That’s when Blight hit the forcefield.” Johanna takes a quick moment to compose herself. “He wasn’t much, but he was from home.”
“Tick-tok, tick-tok.” Wiress grabs Johanna’s shoulder, and Johanna shoots you and Finnick a knowing glare.
“What’s wrong with her?” Katniss asks as Wiress continues repeating the same phrase over and over.
“She’s in shock,” Beetee explains as he finishes washing the rest of the blood off of him, “Dehydration isn’t helping. You have fresh water?”
You watch Wiress continue to hang onto Johanna, and you step past Finnick to intervene before Johanna does something she’ll regret.
“We can get some-“
“Tick-tok, tick-tok-“
Wiress clings to Johanna, but you place a hand on Wiress’s shoulder. She immediately places her hands on your shoulders as she continues to talk.
“I know, I know-“ You nod at Wiress, but Johanna’s reached her limit.
“Just- just shut up!” She screams at Wiress, and you lightly push Wiress behind you as Johanna charges at her.
“Hey, lay off her!” Katniss yells before intervening herself.
This can’t possibly end well.
Katniss charges at Johanna and tries to get her hands on her, but Johanna pushes her back. Finnick is quick to push himself between the two of them. You want to help, but Johanna’s stronger than you are, pissed-off or not, and you’re not wanting to test her as is. Finnick pulls Johanna further into the water as Peeta holds Katniss back.
“I got them out for you,” Johanna yells at Katniss before directing her anger to Finnick, “let me go!”
Johanna continues to struggle against Finnick’s grip, but the situation is diffused, for now, so your attention turns back to Wiress.
“I’m sorry, Wiress.” You look at the blood on your hands from Wiress along with the blood on Wiress herself. “C’mon, let’s get you cleaned up.”
You gently lead Wiress into the water as she continues to tell you ‘tick-tok’.
What are you trying to tell me?
You’re too tired and stressed about every little thing to try and figure it out, but you notice that Wiress is focused on Katniss. Katniss’ eyes meet yours, and you happily wave her over to help you clean her off.
It’ll help keep Katniss focused on something besides trying to hurt Johanna.
“I got this.” Katniss says as you gently pour some water onto Wiress’ clothes.
The murderous intent has left Katniss’ eyes, so you switch spots with her before heading over to Johanna and Finnick.
“Finnick, you’re lucky I didn’t kill her-“
You giggle under your breath after splashing a moderate amount of water onto Johanna and Finnick.
“-Perhaps you could save the murder for after lunch?”
Finnick heartily laughs as Johanna sends you a deadly glare.
“You look like shit. Did you tumble down a mountainside?”
“I did, actually,” A light smirk plays on your face as the next comment flies out of your mouth, “but I think you looked better with blood than without it-“
You choke on the large splash of water that Johanna sends your way. You wipe the water out of your face as you stand there, aghast. Finnick throws his head back and laughs as Johanna manages to crack a smile.
“I missed you too, Johanna,” You roll your eyes before washing the blood off of your hands, “and I wouldn’t laugh, Finnick.”
You lightly flick some water onto Finnick, and his warm smile sends butterflies into your stomach as Johanna carefully observes the both of you.
The playfulness in his eyes sends you retreating back to the shore, but he manages to grab your arm and pull you under water.
You quickly remerge from the water as Finnick pulls you towards him. You both laugh as you place your hands on his chest.
Finnick takes one of your hands and pulls you towards the shore as you try to shake off any previous shyness or embarrassment. You look back at Johanna, who quirks an eyebrow at you.
Don’t mess that up, she mouths to you as you wink at her.
I wasn’t planning on it.
~
The cool water feels refreshing against your skin. District 4 had taught you to find comfort in water, and your first round of the Hunger Games taught you how much of a luxury water truly was.
Dehydration was a major player in your Hunger Games as the main careers were the only ones with access to water with their strong set of sponsor. You were, in all senses, a fish out of water. Dead bodies by berry bushes taught you how to forge, but you would have been dead without a few sponsors of your own. The first canister of water came from your mentors, and you showed your gratefulness through a warm smile and a small ‘thank you’.
That moment was played over and over across Panem. Hubris flowed and weaved through most of the tributes, but not you, apparently. Finnick would laugh and tell you that you learned that from your favorite mentor. You wanted to tease him back, to say that you didn’t learn anything from him, but you did learn how humble and kind he truly was.
Instead, you told him that Mags was your favorite mentor, and he didn’t talk to you for three whole hours.
Your eyes fall to Finnick’s form next to you. He was attractive, with plenty of golden boy looks and charms to spare. You’d never live it down if you told him that, but you weren’t sure if you’d live at this moment, so maybe another moment to see his smile would be worth the temporary embarrassment.
“Are you watching me?” A sly smile rests on his face as he stands next to you on the shoreline.
“In your dreams, pretty boy.”
His trident sinks into the sand as his head leans toward you.
“I like when you call me those names, sweetheart.”
His hot breath on your neck sends a wave of shivers down your spine, and you raise an eyebrow at him before turning to face him. His lips are inches away from yours, but you want to tease him before he gets what he wants.
“Oh, and what else would you like me to call you? Handsome, perhaps?” A coy smile, matched with wide eyes, causes Finnick to laugh for a moment before responding.
“Anything would be good, as long as it came from your lips.”
“Finnick!” You lightly push him away before nervously looking around you.
“You’re nervous about one of them seeing you after you kissed me in front of the whole Capitol?”
“That was different,” You slightly whine as Finnick looks at you with amusement, “I wanted to make sure that you knew how I felt in case something happened to me.”
His mood darkens for a moment.
“No one’s going to hurt you, not on my watch,” His eyes light up again, “but it’s sweet to know that you think of me from time to time.”
“Of course I do,” Mischief finds a way to lace itself back into your voice, “you’re my dearest mentor.”
“Not your favorite?” His puppy dog eyes don’t convince you one bit.
“Still Mags,” You laugh after he sighs in defeat, “but you’re my favorite person, if that’s any consolation prize.”
“I still want to be your favorite mentor.” He grumbles as you continue to merrily laugh.
I wish we could spend every day like this on the coastline at home. Life has a different plan, it always does.
~
“This entire arena seems to be laid out like a clock,” Katniss explains as your group walks toward the Cornucopia, “with a new threat every hour, but they stay only within their wedge. It all starts with the lightning, then the blood rain, fog, monkeys… that’s the first four hours. At ten, that big wave hits over there.”
You admire her deducing skills as she points out each sector. You do your best to memorize them - it could help save your life.
“Wiress, you’re a genius.” Finnick softly compliments her as you approach the weapon rack.
You grab as many throwing knives as possible along with a small satchel to store them in. Being defenseless wasn’t really your style, and you had to prove yourself in some way.
The group discusses the lightning occurrence, and the chatter doesn’t catch your ear as you focus on your surroundings. You’re out in the open, vulnerable on most sides, and someone would get killed if they strayed-
“Relax, you’re tensing up.” Finnick places his hand on your back for a moment before retrieving another small knife from the group.
“I’m just worried,” You say as Finnick offers you the knife, “but thanks-“
He pulls the knife back for a moment with a wicked smile as you dramatically roll your eyes and sigh.
“What do you want me to do, say please?”
“I was going for a kiss, but please will work for me.” He tosses the knife in the air, and you snatch it before he can grab onto it.
“Perhaps you’ll get what you want when there’s less people around,” You tease before you hear the group gathering nearby. “and when there’s less people trying to murder us.”
Wiress sings a childhood lullaby on a rock near the water as Peeta draws a circle on the ground. Finnick moves his hand from your back to his side, but you’re quick grab his hand with yours.
“From twelve to one, there’s lightning, and from one to two, there’s blood,” Peeta divides the circle into even parts as he deciphers the arena, “then fog, then monkeys.”
“Ten to eleven, the wave. What about everything else? Did you guys see anything?”
I think I would remember seeing something bad from this hellhole.
You shake your head as Johanna answers.
“Nothing but blood.”
“It doesn’t matter, as long as you stay clear of whichever sectors active, you’ll be safe.” Peeta counters.
“Yeah, relatively speaking-“ Finnick pauses, as do the rest of you, when you hear a soft gasp from the same spot that Wiress was sitting at.
With a knife in her back from Gloss, Wiress was lifeless in his arms. Your survival instincts kick in as you pull a knife to throw, but Katniss beats you to it with an arrow to his chest. The cannon booms twice in a row as your suspicions are proven right: you’re a target, right where the hunters want you.
Your eyes spot a blob of blonde moving in the distance, so you push Johanna towards it as you look for the other two careers. She can handle herself, along with Katniss. You’re worried about Beetee and Peeta because Finnick cannot protect both of them with an attack on all fronts. You let go of his hand as you prepare yourself to fight like hell for yourself, Finnick, and your friends.
A canon booms as Brutus throws something sharp at the four of you. You duck and pull Beetee down with you as the rest avoid the projectile with ease. You immediately get back up as Brutus charges at Finnick while Enobaria approaches from behind. With a knife in hand, you throw it her way to pull her attention from Finnick. The knife scraps her cheek and leaves a small, bleeding cut where it had once touched her skin.
Enobaria looks at you for a moment, a small bit of fear in her eyes, before baring her teeth at you. With a small glance to Brutus and her fallen allies, she runs to take cover along with Brutus.
Finnick pushes a charging Peeta back as Katniss and Johanna chase after them. You barely have time to think before the center of the Cornucopia starts to spin rapidly. You fall to your knees but are able to grab onto a rock before you fall into the water. Peeta grabs onto one near you, but you can’t tell if any of the others have fallen in to the spinning death trap or if you all are hanging on by a mere thread.
Your eyes catch the sight of the shiny weapons above you that rattle rapidly with the movement of the Cornucopia. You curse under your breath as they start to fall off, but you’re able to navigate your body around them with little to no issue. Peeta struggles a bit more, but your focus lands on his hands. He won’t be able to hold on much longer since he’s not used to the waves constantly crashing into his body.
The last of the weapons and crates fly past you as the Cornucopia slows down and eventually stills. You crawl up to level ground before taking a deep breath.
That was… an experience.
Peeta quickly gets off the ground as you hear Katniss coughing in the distance. Johanna and Peeta run to aid her as you simple bask in the warm glow of the sun. The water was cold and unfamiliar against your skin - a feeling that you hated with every iota of your body.
You pull yourself up before Finnick and Beetee approach you.
“You okay?” Finnick asks as Beetee tries to wipe off his glasses.
How did he manage to keep those things on?
“I’ll survive.” You shake off his concern with a light smile.
Concern still rests in Finnick’s irises, but he lets the question rest for now.
“Let’s just get what we need and get off the bloody island.” Johanna convincingly says, and you nod in agreeance.
I knew this wouldn’t be a good idea, and here we are. Another person who is a needless causality.
~
You stare out at the ocean, reflecting on the events that have just occurred. This activity used to bring you comfort, a moment of relief from the ever-chaotic life of a Victor, but waves of sadness crashed against your heart just as the waves of water splashed your feet.
A couple of tears fall from your eyes as you replay the fight at the Cornucopia again and again. If you had been with Wiress, you could’ve saved her. If you had been more aware and less of a romantic idiot, then one less person’s blood would be on your hands.
You couldn’t listen to the five of them discuss who was alive, and the next plan. Not so soon after Wiress’ death, after someone you cared about was ripped from your life without any hesitation.
You wipe the tears from your eyes as you imagine the Capitol citizens cheering at your display of affection. You had always had a soft heart for the tributes you trained and your fellow victors, so a moment like this was not uncommon.
You remember how you bawled after the first set of tributes from District 4 died under your mentorship and guidance. You had locked yourself in your room, and Mags was the first one to come knocking on the door.
“Mags, I can’t do this!” You cry out from under the sheets.
She gently knocks, twice, against the door.
“They were counting on me…” You mumble under your breath as another wave of tears fell from your eyes.
She stayed out there all night until you came out for breakfast the next day. You had never felt such strong affection from someone until that moment, when she hugged you as she wiped your tears. Mags always knew what to do.
What would she do now?
She’d smile and stroke your face with a loving look in her eyes before nodding in front of you. With a small hug, she would send you back in to face whatever had been bothering you.
Mags was your favorite mentor because she understood you like no one else would. She knew who you were under the sunshine, and she still accepted you for it. That, however, didn’t stop Finnick from creeping into your heart.
Maybe Finnick wasn’t your favorite mentor, but rather, your favorite person. You’d have to tell him that sometime, if you got the chance.
Unfortunately, your introspective thoughts had to be put aside as someone stood up from behind you.
“Prim!” Katniss screams before running into the forest.
Your eyes widen as you realize what’s pulling her to the forest.
Mockingjays.
~
Mockingjays were your least favorite flying creatures by far. Many other tributes would regard them as an annoyance, but you had watched one tear your District 4 tribute, the one from your first set of Hunger Games, away from you. The birds sung praises of loved ones, and promises of safety and familial love. You knew better, but they didn’t.
That damned bird was harnessed by the career pack, and they murdered your district partner in cold blood as you watched from the shadows. After they left, you made a small bouquet of flowers and laid it on your ally’s chest. Soon after, you received a parachute from your second sponsor - a set of knives to bring harm to those who had taken your last piece of home away from you.
Here you were, again, watching as your mentor sat silently in the field after being trapped with the mockingjays for an hour. Katniss had Peeta to tell her that everything was okay, but what could you say to Finnick that he didn’t already know? Annie and Mags were safe, for now, and you were here beside him. You were physically here, but your mind kept replaying the image of your fellow tribute bleeding to death on the ground.
The man in front of you started to resemble the kid who was slain in the games, and as soon as a grotesque image of Finnick’s lifeless body entered your mind, you quickly stood up and brushed past a ranting Johanna.
“What are they-“
“Don’t, just don’t.” Johanna quickly defends you from any questioning as you make your way back to the beach, to your safe place.
You sit on the sand, waiting for some answer to rise out of the water. The waves had always calmed your mind, but between Wiress’ death and the Mockingjays, you couldn’t find anything relaxing about the water. Everything felt suffocating, like you were drowning in a tide pool of your thoughts and emotions.
You sit down on the sand and let everything crash over you. There are no more tears, no more sadness… just an empty, horrible feeling at the bottom of your stomach.
“Mind if I join you?” Finnick’s voice floats to your ears, but you can’t find the energy to respond to him.
You’re drained, tired, and ready to go back to District 4, but there was no going back from what was already planned out.
Finnick chooses to take your silence as an answer as he slowly sits next to you. You think about how odd you look, tribute and mentor, side-by-side. You’re not a teenager any more - neither is he - but you feel childish, refusing to talk to him after he went through something as horrible as those Mockingjays.
“I’m sorry.” You bluntly say while cutting out any mental excuses that your brain is making up.
Finnick doesn’t respond, and you don’t have the courage to look at him. You, subconsciously, place your hand to the side in an attempt to ground yourself in the moment. You needed to be here, now, in the moment-
His hand, ever-so-gently, is placed on top of yours.
Everything has felt so fucked-up as of late.
But this? Being close to Finnick - getting all of his touch, his teasing,  his kindness, his everything - it was everything to you.
For the first time since you entered the arena, you felt at home.
~
A familiar tune plays as your group stops to look at those who have been killed today. Familiar faces appear in the sky, both ones you love and hate, but there is no time for any regret to be spared. There is a plan - one that is highly dangerous and highly unlikely to work - but you have no time. The clock ticks in your head, in your heart, in your body, until midnight.
You’ll be dead, a slave to the Capitol, or on your way to an uncertain future.
What great options.
You approach the tree right behind everyone else as Beetee begins to work. You back away and let him do the rest as midnight ticks closer with every waking breath.
~
Beetee hands Katniss the rest of the electrical wire, and instructs you, Katniss, and Johanna on what to do and where to meet. Like any decision made so far, someone has to disagree with the plan that was crafted beyond their awareness.
“I’ll go with them as a guard.” Peeta says, but Beete quickly disagrees.
“No, no, you’re staying here to protect me… and the tree.”
The suspicions quickly clouds around Katniss and Peeta as you exhale deeply.
Why does every decision have to start and end with an argument?
“No, I need to go with her.” Peeta harshly says.
“There are two careers out there, and I need two guards.” Beetee matches Peeta’s intensity as you glance over at Finnick.
Do something, you mouth at him before he turns back towards everyone else.
“Finnick and Johanna can protect you just fine.” Peeta tries to reason with him, and Katniss, as always, jumps in with her own opinion on the matter.
“Yeah, why can’t Finnick and Johanna stay with you while Peeta, Sunny, and I take the coil?”
Your ears perk at the second mention of your name as you turn to look at Katniss, but she’s staring holes into Beetee.
“You all agreed to keep me alive until midnight, correct?” Beetee approaches Katniss, who stays silent.
“It’s his plan,” Johanna chimes in, “we all agreed to it.”
“Is there a problem?” Finnick, finally, decides to speak up as you cross your arms.
“Excellent question. Is there a problem?” Beetee matches Katniss’ glare, and you watch her back down.
“No, there’s no problem.”
You would’ve stepped in, but the hostility that Katniss has displayed in the current moments has made you question that action. You’d like to walk out of here with as few arrows in your body as possible.
Peeta and Katniss share a parting kiss as you glance over at Finnick again.
Be careful, he mouths to you as you prepare to take your leave.
I always am, you silently say back before you depart with Katniss and Johanna towards the water.
~
Your mind is in a state of complete disarray as you make your way towards the beach. Katniss makes a point to hand you her bow instead of Johanna, but she’s quick to snatch it back as soon as she can.
I don’t blame her for being on edge. I am too.
Regret is the ugly feeling consuming you - regret for not telling Finnick something in that last moment, the last moment you might ever see him again.
Don’t say that, don’t think that. You will find your way back to home, you always do.
Thoughts of home kept you safe, calm, and sane in your first Hunger Game. Home, then, was your family home with all of your loved ones inside. Home was the beach where you and your school friends would play after lessons were through. Home was the smell of freshly cooked fish in the air that mingled with the sea salt smell of the water. Home was everything that District Four was.
Thinking about home, now, lead you back to the same person again and again. His golden locks that you spent far too long admiring, his sugary smile that melted your heart at the mere mention of it, and his sweet gestures and sly words that had you both toeing the line between fellow mentors and something more.
You wondered if you would get another chance to kiss him, to tell him every emotion that he inspired in you. If you didn’t, wherever you ended up, you would tell them about Finnick: the man he was, is, and always will be.
“C’mon, I want to put as much distance between us and this beach as possible,” Johanna sternly tells Katniss as she brings the wire behind the three of you, “frying is not the way I want to go.”
“There’s something…” Katniss trails off as she tugs on the wire behind her.
A few more tugs from Katniss, and the wire comes free. The knife naturally comes to the front of your hand as Brutus approaches from the distance.
A quick look from Johanna causes you to throw said knife at him. He dodges it before stopping, but the sickening smile on his face sends shivers down your spine. You hear Johanna hit Katniss on the back of the head as you grab another knife.
So it begins.
You throw another knife at Brutus, and his dodging skills worsen as the knife cuts open part of his uniform and stomach. The cut isn’t too deep, not enough to kill, but it gives enough of a distraction for Johanna to cut the tracker out of Katniss’ arm.
Enobaria appears next to him, and your eyes widen as Johanna tells Katniss to stay down. You ready another knife, but Johanna shoves you to her right.
“Go,” She say before preparing to strike with her axe, “and don’t look back. Haymitch isn’t the only person I made a promise to.”
Finnick-
You nod in solemn agreement before taking off back towards the tree.
After a minute of running, you hide among the bushes for the moment as you hear footsteps approach.
“Johanna, Sunny, where are you?” Finnick calls out before stopping not too far from you.
Every cell inside you is reaching out to say something, to call out to him, but you can’t.
You tear off a small part of your tribute outfit before preparing to plunge your knife into your left arm.
The tracker has to go out one way or another.
Katniss was ready to go, and with a clean knife cut, yours was out too. The pain was immeasurable, but you quickly stop the bleeding with your makeshift bandaid. You throw the tracker towards the beach as you hear Finnick walk away from Katniss and yourself.
You can hear Katniss struggling to stand, so you quietly approach her while cutting off another part of your shirt. Once you emerge from the bushes, an arrow is pointed at your chest, but Katniss doesn’t put her bow down.
“You have to trust me, just for a while longer.” You toss her the strip of clothing, and she puts her bow down to tie up her arm before heading back to the tree.
You quietly trail behind her, nerves on edge, as you hold your knife in anticipation for an attacker. Katniss holds the wire in her hand as she looks at the tree curiously.
Sparks by the left side of the tree send Beetee flying as you quickly pass Katniss to check on Beetee.
He’s twitching and non-response, but breathing.
“Beetee-“
You pause as Katniss spots a makeshift spear nearby. Your eyes widen as you look at the tree in front of you - a ticking death machine as far as you were concerned.
You pull Beetee as far away from the tree as you can manage before another cannon fires.
“Peeta!” Katniss screams as her anger flares towards you.
The arrow is lined straight at your heart - if she releases it, you’re dead.
But you don’t fear death, not for a moment. If your death saves her and everyone else, then it would be a worthy sacrifice.
A tear falls, but not of fear or sadness, but pity. Pity for the poor girl in front of you who only knows how to solve violence with more violence.
You could only hope that Peeta was alive out there, and that Brutus or Enobaria were the one dead.
Rummaging through the nearby bushes causes her to misfire, as the arrow makes it mark into your knee. You crumble to the ground in horrendous pain as you only hope that this all will work out. You wonder if you will be able to walk again - your mentors had warned that injuries to the lower-half of your body would wound you for life if it didn’t cause your death in the arena.
You can only be a spectator as Katniss prepares another arrow, one to fire at the person who’s headed this way.
“Katniss, where are you?” Finnick cries out as Katniss prepares to fire her arrow at her.
You can only writhe in pain and be a spectator as Finnick notices Katniss. Pain constricts your throat, so you can’t tell him that you’re out of the way, that you’re safe, but he’s not.
You can’t watch someone else, someone from your home, die right in front of your. You were a helpless kid then as you watched someone die, but now, you were an adult.
Hell will have frozen over if you don’t do something about it.
You try to move your injured leg after a little pain subsides, but a shooting pain in your knee keeps you from moving your legs anymore than you have to.
“Katniss, remember who the real enemy is.” Finnick warns her as she continues to stay on-guard with her arrow pointed at his chest.
You look over at Beetee as guilt washes over you. You won’t let anyone else you care about die, not even the girl who shot you in the damn knee. With one hand in front of the other, you pull yourself out of the shadows and towards the two of them. Pain shoots through your body, but the adrenaline pumping through your veins counteracts it.
You try to stay as far away from the tree as possible as Katniss decides what to do next. She lowers her bow for a moment as thunder starts to collect around the tree of you. A bush blocks your view for a moment as you continue to crawl, but you hear Finnick warn Katniss to stay away from the tree. The last thing you remember was Finnick charging forward and Katniss releasing an arrow towards the lightning strikes before sparks clouded your vision until it faded completely black.
~
White.
The only color you see around you is white. Your arms are restricted by some sort of holding device behind you. You struggle against them, but your effortless are completely and utterly useless.
“We had a deal, Sunny.”
Shivers run up your spine as a clean set of black boots approach you. You know that voice, you’ve heard it all over speakers and right in front of you, and you hate its smugness. Its owner, however, is objectively the worst part.
Your eyes glance up to meet his as Snow cruelly smiles at you.
“And here I was, thinking that you would be something so much greater than yourself,” He chides you before pulling something out from behind his back, “what a fool I was.”
“I think, Sunny,” He continues as the weapon in his land comes to life with electric sparks, “that you and I need to become reacquainted with one another. Who, truly, is the real Sunny?”
Your screams aren’t heard from the soundproof rooms, and he doesn’t stop after you feel yourself fade away to nothingness.
~
The gently rocking of a carrier ship disturbs your unpeaceful rest. An oxygen mask helps you calm your breath as you open your eyes. The lights blind your vision, and for a moment, you’re scared that your nightmare was about to come true.
“Well, that went about as well as possible.” Haymitch mumbles before setting Katniss down next to you. Your eyes dart to the other side, where Beetee gently rests next to you.
“She needs time to adjust,” Another man, one that you don’t quite recognize, says before his eyes meet yours, “but they look less violent.”
Haymitch turns to you as he lets out a deep sigh.
“Sorry about your knee, and sorry about the shit job I did wrapping it up. Finnick re-wrapped it, by the way-“
You immediately sit up as Haymitch gently grabs your shoulder.
“Yes, yes, your lover boy is okay, calm down. You’re not going anywhere fast for a long time.” You look at your knee with Haymitch as you see the wound bleeding through the bandaging. It’s carefully wrapped, not too tight, just like Finnick did whenever you got cuts on your hands from the rocks back at home.
“Sunny?”
You push Haymitch away with the strength of a toddler as Finnick approaches this part of the plane.
“Okay, I got it, you two need some alone time.” Haymitch stands up before heading to the front of the plane. “Plutarch-“
“You did good, protecting the Mockingjay. If you feel like fighting again, we could always use someone like you.” Plutarch says before following Haymitch to the front of the carrier ship.
Finnick quickly passes both of them as the door closes behind him. Once he reaches your side, he pulls the oxygen mask off your face and lightly caresses your cheek with the pad of his thumb. You, in response, raise a hand towards the bruises on his face.
“Your cheek-“ You croak out as Finnick shakes his head.
“Don’t worry about me, I’m fine. How’s your knee?”
“Hurts.” You mumble softly.
His eyes never leave yours, and the adoration in his eyes melts your core. You two stay in a comfortable silence as you place your hand on his chest.
“I won’t let anything else hurt you, I promise. We’ll be safe in District 13, I-“
You cut him off with a sweet kiss to the lips.
“I love you,” You lovingly whisper after your lips leave his, “now and forever.”
“Even with everything we’ve been through?” He quietly says as you reassure him.
“Especially considering everything we’ve been through.”
This time, his lips meet yours as you melt into Finnick’s chest, and, for now, this feels enough like home.

Sugarcoat
A/N: I wanted to write something in the spirit of back-to-school season since I will be heading back next week. :( If you've already started or if you're starting soon, best of luck with your semester!
TW: Reader is gossiped about
Pairing: Dami x Reader (platonic to implied romantic)
Summary: Your life in college has been nothing but empty rumors and failed promises. The introduction of a new seat mate changes how you view the people around you, and how they view you in return.
Tumblr media
Sugarcoat, I cast off
Whatever you say about me
Being reserved made you mysterious, and mystery caused rumors to cloud around your everyday movement and activities. Your dating life tended to be the worst of them all as classmates and co-workers alike would often pin you to be a player or completely uninterested in everything. You simply wished to sit next to someone and not see them lean over to talk to someone else.
So, you kept in your shell and kept to yourself. People didn’t need to know anything more about you then you would tell-
“Can I sit here?”
A warm, deep voice snaps you out of your thoughts.
“Sure.”
You gently observe the brown-haired woman who sits next to you. Intro to Philosophy, a social studies credit for your major, would prove to be more interesting than you thought. You notice that she pulls out a laptop that is well-endowed with stickers on the back.
“I like the stickers on your laptop.” You quietly say as your professor enters the classroom.
“Thanks. They’re just from different shows and musicians that I like.” She pauses for a moment as you continue to observe the different logos and characters on them. “Would you be interested in a tour?”
A light smile appears on your face - a rarity in class, especially by another person.
“I’d like that.”
Just move, as I want
Dancing for myself
“You take dance classes?” You ask you spot her daily schedule as the background on the computer. “Sorry, that was invasive and weird-“
“It’s just once a week with a close group of friends.” Dami explains before opening a browser to prepare materials for today’s class. “What about you? Any remarkable interests?”
“Nothing that you haven’t heard from others before, I’m sure-“
“I’d much rather make my observations in-person rather than by rumors.”
“I-“ You pause as a slight bout of embarrassment crosses your features. “I think that’s the first time someone’s spoken to me instead of about me.”
“It’s a shame, really,” Dami glances at you before the professor starts class, “they’re missing out on a great person.”
Another first happens within two weeks - someone manages to make your heartbeat quicken.
Don’t sugarcoat me, baby
Complex is over-rated
You like to simplify the world around you - it makes your life so much simpler. The grass is green, the sky is blue, and you most definitely have feelings for the mysterious yet kind girl who goes out of her way to always sit next to you or save you a seat whenever you have class.
You think that she’s caught on to your feelings as her hand lingers on yours when she’s looking at your computer or how her eyes catch yours when the professor goes off-topic every class period.
“You’re strange,” You comment as your professor talks about their dog again, “but I don’t mind.”
“Me?” Dami chuckles softly. “I think that’s the first time someone’s said that to my face.”
A light smile plays on your features as you notice your classmates aren’t paying you any mind - it’s so relaxing  to know that you’re not under the microscope of your peers.
“I like that you’re strange, you’re like me,” You pause to still your beating heart, “but I was wondering if you’d like to get lunch sometime?”
“With you?” A warm, inviting smile stays on her face. “Absolutely.”
The transparent moonlight
Pours out, more freely

Goodnight, Moonlight
A/N: Y’know, I’m actually super proud of this fic. I was unsure of myself and the direction that I wanted to go, but I ended with something that I really like. Please let me know if you want another part, I’d love to continue the story and see where our lovebirds end up next. ;)
TW: Cannon-typical levels of violence and gore, aquatic fighting, mentions of drowning, reader is described to be physically strong and have typical traits and skills that a victor from District 4 would have (dw I can’t swim but I can be delulu), reader maintains their obliviousness, slightly OOC! Peeta and Katniss (I've never written for them before so please excuse any flaws), poison fogs, reader and Co. sustains multiple injuries, death (no main character death yet)
Pairing: Finnick x GN! Reader (”one-sided” romantic to shared romantic)
Summary: As you’re thrust into the arena, you’re forced to focus on keeping yourself alive, keeping your mentor and Katniss from harming one another, and keeping ahead of the endless perils that are thrown your way. Mixed signals from Finnick eventually even out, and a moment of clarity brings you two closer together than you’ve ever been before.
(<- Previous Part | Next Part -> | Series Masterlist)
Tumblr media
Finnick can’t die or get captured by the Capitol. It has to be me.
That’s your first coherent thought as the pedestal stabilizes in the arena. You find yourself growing oddly… familiar with this environment, these few seconds where nothing yet everything matters.
You can’t see Finnick or Katniss, but you recognize Johanna’s fiery red hair. You also spot Wiress and Beetee close together, and you let yourself relax for a moment before the canon fires.
Water.
You dive into the water without a second thought. Swimming is as natural as breathing, given your home district, and you easily outrace your competitors to the rocks that lead to the Cornucopia. You climb on the rocks with ease, and you’re running towards the center of the arena until you spot blonde hair struggling to swim in the water.
Peeta.
You don’t hesitate to switch course and dive in after him. Helping Peeta would not only get you further into Katniss’s good graces, but it would be right on target with your image in the Capitol.
That’s exactly the kind of thinking that Finnick encouraged.
You push your mentor out of your mind as you quickly peek above water and spot another male heading towards Peeta. His eyes are dripping venom, but you’re not scared to shoot a murderous look back.
Sunny was a sweet mentor, a respectful celebrity, and a dangerous tribute. You could manage to be all three - as long as you did so with a smile on your face.
“Don’t be afraid to smile,” President Snow chides as you nervously stare at the carnations as his desk, “you know that’s what the people want to see, right?”
The image of Snow’s head on a large spike is enough to motivate you to swim faster than your competition.
You push Peeta out of the way before landing a punch to the face of the other man. From a quick assessment, you weren’t as strong as this man, but he couldn’t fight in water like you could.
You dodge an uncoordinated swing to your left side before landing another hit - this time you punch his chest. He takes a bigger breath as his eyes meet yours.
You offer a warm smile before he tries - and fails - to land another hit. You look over for just a second, just to make sure that Peeta’s still in your peripheral vision, before the other tribute tackles you under the surface of the water.
You immediately thrash around as he tries to keep you under - a lucky breath saves you from drowning as you manage to free yourself from his grasp.
He’ll drown if he tries to drown me.
You emerge from the water, and the warm air that enters your lungs causes you to cough violently. You grab onto a nearby pedestal as you try to locate Peeta in-between coughing fits.
You spot Peeta as he throws a punch at the man, and your head snaps to the Cornucopia as your breaths even out. From a distance, you see a man with a trident looking for someone, and you take a bet on who that might be as you wave a hand in the air.
Finnick immediately rushes around the Cornucopia after he spots you, and returns with a black-haired girl who you could recognize from a mile away.
You swim towards the rocks before finally making your way out of the water. The warm air on all of your skin feels like relief in its sweetest form - one that is most welcome as you realize how drained you are from one simple encounter.
It has to be the water because I cannot be a weakness right now.
You point out Peeta in the water once Finnick and Katniss get closer, and Finnick doesn’t hesitate to dive in as Peeta continues to struggle in the water.
For the first time in a long time, you fear for his safety. Peeta’s a teenager, just like you were, but he’s already back in the arena.
This isn’t fair.
Words die on the tip of your tongue - comforting people was your speciality, but Katniss didn’t appear to need comforting as she raises her bow and prepares to fire an arrow.
When Peeta and the other tribute are submerged underwater before Finnick gets to them, Katniss reluctantly puts down her bow as she stares expectantly into the water.
You jump when the canon fires, and the hope in her eyes turns to fear as a still body emerges from the water. You’re scared to look because if it’s Peeta-
Thankfully, Peeta emerges from the water as Finnick reaches him, and they both swim back safely as you and Katniss share a relieved expression.
Katniss watches the Cornucopia as the careers gather there and stare her down, and you grab Finnick’s trident from the rocks.
It doesn’t feel right in my hands - it’s like this weapon was meant to be with Finnick.
You hand Finnick his trident after he gathers himself, and you watch Katniss take Peeta’s hand and help him out of the water.
“You alright?” Finnick places a hand on your shoulder, and the weight of your earlier realization crashes down on you as you nod.
You can’t let Finnick get hurt, but you can’t let him know that you feel this way about him because you know how he feels about-
“I’m good, thanks,” You gently place your hand on his, “but you really couldn’t grab me a weapon?”
The serious expression melts off his face as he chuckles slightly, and you feel a bit self-conscious as Katniss and Peeta stare at you like wild deer.
“I didn’t have time, and I know you’re better with your fists, sweetheart.” Finnick replies to your teasing with a smile as he lets go of your shoulder.
You find yourself missing his touch - don’t think about Finnick like that - when Peeta steps towards you.
“Thank you fo-“
“You can thank me when we’re out of here, okay?” You interrupt him before another cannon sounds. “I don’t feel like becoming prey for the predators.”
Katniss glances back at the Cornucopia one last time as the four of you make your way towards the beach and into the thick forestry that awaits you.
~
Your quartet runs into the forest as Peeta leads with Katniss right behind him. Finnick allows you to go in front of him with a handsome smile and welcoming arm gesture (you’d have to tease him about that later).
Your mind wanders as your feet effortlessly navigate the forest floor - playing tag on rock beaches and having some experience in rock climbing did have its uses, after all.
Does Finnick mean what he says when he calls me sweetheart, or is it apart of the Capitol facade? I suppose I’m not much better - does Finnick know who I truly am behind the sunshine?
The distinction had become unclear for yourself - you were kind, but that wasn’t all that you were. You liked to tease your mentor and be a thorn in his side, but you also wanted to help the children in your district understand that there is life outside of the games. Couldn’t both sides of you coexist at the same time?
“Okay, hold up, hold up!”
Finnick’s voice causes you to pause as your breathing catches up with the rest of your body - you’d run a long distance without being phased in the slightest. You need to take breaks so you could be energized for a possible encounter, but a quick look back assures you that the Cornucopia is out of sight and, for now, out of mind.
Peeta’s the first to sit, and you’re quick to follow as you watch Katniss scan the environment for any possible danger. Finnick catches up and sits next to you. Katniss reluctantly kneels as you start to fan yourself - you’re in a jungle, not a forest, and it’s fucking hot.
“God, it’s hot,” You wipe the sweat from your forehead as Peeta speaks, “we got to find fresh water.”
You glance over at Finnick, who offers you a reassuring nod. You notice that Katniss is watching the two of you, but you choose not to say anything. She’s paranoid and overprotective, and who wouldn’t be?
A booming cannon pushes everyone’s attention to the sky, which is quickly followed by a second and third cannon.
With his bright smile and a small laugh, Finnick tries to lighten the mood with a simple joke.
“I guess we’re not holding hands anymore.”
You briefly smile and chuckle under your breath before Katniss chimes in.
“You think that’s funny?”
Your eyes widen as you glance over at Finnick to see how he handles her aggression.
“Every time that cannon goes off, it’s music to my ears. I don’t care about any of them.”
“Good to hear.” Katniss draws a machete from her back as you place a hand on Finnick’s arm.
You’d always be there for him, and you’d fight off Katniss if that’s what it took, but you needed her alive, along with Peeta. Although you had know her for such little time, you saw your younger spirit in her - the feisty, brash child that fought with her heart in her hand.
“Wanna face the career pack alone?” Finnick pauses for a beat before asking her another question. “What would Haymitch say?”
“Sunny, you have to know that Katniss doesn’t play nice with others.”
“But she was nice to me, Haymitch-“
“You’re odd, just like she is. Maybe you can find some common ground and convince her to not shoot Finnick the moment he opens his mouth.”
“…Thanks.”
He’d probably tell you, at this very moment, to grab a drink and enjoy the show, but you had to keep the peace.
For his sake, for Peeta’s sake, and for my sake.
“Haymitch isn’t here.” Katniss coldly answers while slightly lowering her machete.
“We should get going.” You glance over at Peeta, who nods in acknowledgment.
“Yeah, let’s keep moving.”
You pull yourself off the ground, and Peeta does the same while Katniss stares daggers into Finnick.
“Play nice,” You mumble under your breath to Finnick before walking over to Katniss, “and I’m sorry that his ego can get in the way sometimes. He’s a nice guy, I promise.”
You offer Katniss a hand up off the ground as a truce, and a small smile appears and then quickly disappears off her face as she takes your hand.
~
“For the record,” Finnick mumbles as you walk with him behind Katniss and Peeta, “I was playing nice. She’s just a bit… rough around the edges.”
“Sounds like someone else I know.” You roll your eyes as Finnick bumps your shoulder.
“First you say I have an ego, and now this,” He sighs before playfully pushing you ahead, “I’m starting to think you don’t like me, Sunny.”
You feel your face start to heat up as you begin to fidget with a part of your clothing.
If only he knew how much I really liked him-
“Of course I do, Finnick.” You bite your lip while hoping that he doesn’t notice the effect his words and lingering touches have on you.
Don’t think about this right now-
“I’m glad someone here does.”
His comment earns his a golden stare down from Katniss, and you lightly smack his shoulder before continuing on in silence.
Peeta cuts through the vines ahead as creatures of the jungles - ones that you hope aren’t here to eat you - make various noises that only set your nerves over the edge. Katniss falls behind you and Finnick, and you can only hope that you’ve set her mind off of killing Finnick, even if it’s just for a moment.
You continue to walk on, but you pause once you hear Katniss’ footsteps stop. Finnick doesn’t take notice of the situation, but you can tell that she’s seen something worthy of alarm.
Peeta continues to swing the machete when you see a small reflection of light on a bush in front of him. Your eyes widen in alarm as you take a small step back.
The forcefield-!
“Peeta, no!” Katniss screams at Peeta strikes the forcefield.
Sparks fly as you instinctually cover your eyes with one arm, and you use the other arm to shield Katniss as much as possible. Peeta is blown back by the impact, and you’re knocked to the ground along with Finnick and Katniss.
Katniss is quick to crawl to her knees as you follow suit.
“Peeta?”
Your heart aches as the weakness in her voice laces around every syllable of his name.
She cares for the boy, more than she lets on.
She gently caresses Peeta’s face as you watch from a small distance behind her - she needs to check over him herself, to make sure he’s okay-
“He’s not breathing! He’s not breathing!”
You push Finnick towards the two of them, and Finnick harshly pushes Katniss out of the way so he can attempt to save Peeta. It’s a standard medical procedure that all District 4 families know by heart, but you place a reassuring hand on Katniss’ shoulder after she tries to pull an arrow on Finnick.
You know that words won’t do anything to comfort Katniss, and she rushes to Peeta’s side as you’re forced to be an uncomfortable spectator.
“Peeta, Peeta-“
You place a hand over your mouth as tears start to form in your eyes.
Come on, Peeta…
“Come on, come on!”
Finnick matches your worries as he continues compressions on Peeta.
“Please wake up.”
Katniss’ voice cracks which cracks the dam in your eyes as you begin to cry.
Katniss loves Peeta like I love-
You do your best to wipe the tears from your eyes as you imagine how the Capitol is enjoying the show. They’re watching three fierce competitors do their best to bring back another victor - a first in the history of the Hunger Games, you’re sure. You’re not even doing much but displaying your heart on your sleeve, and that’s enough for you to do. People stay attached and are sympathetic, and you can only hope that it’ll continue after you commit the worst crime, betraying the Capitol, after you get Katniss and Peeta out of here.
Peeta takes a deep breath, and you deeply sigh in relief as Finnick backs off to let Katniss and Peeta have a moment.
Once Finnick stands up, you pull him into a comforting hug, but you’re not sure if the hug is more for you or for him.
“I can’t-“
“I know.” He places a gentle hand on your back as you watch Katniss and Peeta interact.
“Do you wanna stand up?”
“Yeah.”
Once Peeta stands up, Katniss pulls Peeta into a hug as you let go of Finnick. You notice that Finnick’s hand doesn’t move as your heart pounds - this isn’t the moment nor is it your moment - as his eyes never leave Katniss and Peeta.
He knows, and I know.
~
Katniss throws a rock at the forcefield as a small group of sparks come from the collision. Peeta follows behind Katniss, and you follow behind Peeta as Finnick brings up the rear.
The next rock she throws reproduces similar results, but you notice that Finnick places a protective hand on your shoulder. You make your way through the jungle floor as Katniss throws another rock at the forcefield.
“Hold on.” She says before moving further ahead of the group. She climbs the largest tree she can find, and the three of you wait in silence before she comes back down.
“The forcefield is a dome,” Katniss reports after coming back down, “so we’re at the edge of the arena. I couldn’t find any signs of fresh water.”
Your throat dries up further at the mention of water. None of you will last long in this heat without any sort of hydration.
“It’s gonna get dark soon, we’ll be safe with our backs protected. We should set up camp - take turns sleeping.” Finnick sits next to you while looking directly at Katniss. “I’ll take first watch.”
Katniss scoffs before replying.
“Not a chance.”
Finnick gives her a disapproving look before grabbing his trident and standing up.
“Honey, that thing I did back there for Peeta? That was called saving his life. If I wanted to kill either of you, I would’ve done it by now.”
Finnick sticks his trident in the ground as Katniss continues to have a glare-off with him. Eventually, Finnick takes his trident and offers you a hand up. You quietly take it before shooting Peeta and Katniss an apologetic look - not your first, but certainly not your last.
“Why don’t you get some rest? I’ll take first watch.” Katniss instructs Peeta mores then telling him, but he reluctantly stands up.
“Just for a little bit.”
She nods as he moves to sit farther away from you and Finnick, but closer to Katniss.
He doesn’t trust us because she doesn’t.
You squeeze Finnick’s hand as you sit a few feet from the forcefield.
“Let me talk to her tonight. I have a way of charming people.”
“She’s tough to crack-“
“I did it before, in the practice room,” You say with determination while looking at him, “and I know I can do it again.”
He doesn’t answer, but he squeezes your hand in reassurance.
That’s good enough for me.
~
Peeta lays peacefully asleep as you sit on a nearby rock by Katniss and Finnick.
“How’s Peeta?” He softly asks.
“Is he well?” You add on while trying to break the palpable tension between you three.
Not three, but if they’re going to argue, then all of us will suffer.
“He’s okay, I think, just…” She trails off for a moment, “dehydrated, like the rest of us.”
Familiar music draws your attention to the skies as today’s victors-turned-victims display on the forcefield. There’s familiar faces, ones that you had come to befriend and love… it’s enough to drive you to tears. As the display continues, Finnick places a hand on your shoulder for comfort.
It’s not enough, but it’ll do.
Peeta awakens too, and the four of you sit in contemplative silence as the display finally comes to a close.
“Eight.” Katniss says as you wave off tears.
“I’m fine, Finnick,” You gently brush his hand off your shoulder as you look up to the sky again, “but look at the sky!”
A small canister attached to a parachute floats down and lands a few feet from Katniss, and she’s quick to gather the canister. She opens the canister with easy, which contains a note plus something else you can’t quite see.
“Drink up?”
“What is it?” Finnick asks as you approach Katniss behind him.
“It’s from Haymitch,” Katniss picks the item out of the canister, “I think it’s a spiel.”
Katniss rushes past Finnick to pound the spiel into a nearby tree with a rock. Peeta rushes to Katniss’ side as the four of you watch and eventually see the spiel product water.
Haymitch did his part, which means that I have to do mine.
~
“I counted twelve.” Katniss notes as you look up to the sky.
“It’s midnight-” Finnick tries to add.
“-Or the number of districts.” Katniss challenges as you shake your head.
They can never agree on the simple things, huh?
A series of lightning strikes on a large tree in the distance draws your attention.
“Well, if you two aren’t going to sleep,” Finnick says as you nod in confirmation, “then I will.”
“Alright.” Katniss says as Finnick gets up from his post.
“Goodnight, Finnick.”
“Goodnight, Sunny,” Finnick looks back and offers you a warm smile, “make sure to get some rest.”
“I will.”
He silently walks away as you turn your attention to Katniss.
“I’m sorry about Finnick, he can be-“
“Why did you try to save Peeta earlier? You don’t know him.” Katniss bluntly asks.
“Peeta is important to you, and I wanted to spare you the pain that so many others face.” You truthfully answer as Katniss studies your face with scrutiny.
“You don’t know me either-“
“-Katniss, if I knew every person I’ve ever helped, I wouldn’t be Sunny,” You tell her, “and I don’t know who I would be if I wasn’t that person. I used to think Sunny was a persona, but it’s become who I truly am.”
“Were you someone different before the games?”
“I think we all were, if that’s not obvious enough,” You glance at Peeta before returning your attention to Katniss, “but I think the Hunger Games showed me who I truly was. Wouldn’t wish this shit on anyone else, though.”
“I-“
“I think you’ll discover that we’re not so different after all, Katniss,” You say before standing up, “but I wish you a good night. I hope the night is uneventful for you.”
You walk a small distance before turning back.
“Oh, and don’t be too hard on Finnick. He’s been through a lot more than he lets on.”
“Tell him to back off first.”
You chuckle as you lay down close to Finnick, but far enough that your beating heart doesn’t threaten to blow out your eardrums.
~
“Run, run! The fog is poison!”
Katniss’ words send you from slumber to alert as you’re the first on your feet. You move down the side of the hill as Finnick and Peeta catch up to you. You let Katniss pass you as Finnick pushes you in front so he takes up the rear.
You continue to run through the forestry without a second thought as the thick fog chases you. The fog suddenly approaches from the right, and Peeta is quickly to avoid it, along with the rest of you.
As you round a corner, the fog then approaches from the left. You dodge the fog like you dodged arrows in your original Hunger Games. It was too easy, but you were concerned for Finnick since the fog was nearly kissing you.
When the four of you make it to a clearing, the fog makes a semicircle around you, and Peeta’s forced to lead the group in another direction as you aimlessly follow in the hopes that you’ll survive this.
The fog seems to increase in speed, and you scream in agony once it touches your skin. You barely avoid Katniss, who tripped in front of you, and Peeta goes back to save her. He’s burned by the fog too, and Katniss pulls him up before they follow behind you.
You continue in front of the group this time, and you hear Finnick’s shrieks from a distance, but you can’t go back for him.
As long as he’s yelling, he’s alive.
It tears your heart into shreds to hear him, to hear those kids behind you, in so much pain. You immediately turn around when you hear a body fall to the ground.
“Peeta!” Katniss sticks next to him like a loyal dog as you watch from a safe distance. Finnick approaches the two of them, and he doesn’t hesitate to help Katniss by wrapping one of Peeta’s arms around his shoulder. As Katniss wraps the other arm around his shoulder, Finnick motions you to continue forward.
You run forward, safe from most harm, as the other members of your group continue to bear most of the brunt from the fog. A sharp hill awaits you, but you quickly navigate it as Katniss, Finnick, and Peeta fall, quite literally, behind you.
You cry in pain as you touch the back of your neck. You spot a nearby pool of water as the trio behind you makes a rough landing.
You watch in horror as the fog approaches, but it’s stopped by an invisible wall that barely prevents any injury to the rest of you. Your attention snaps back to the water - your neck really fucking hurts - as you approach the water. When you submerge yourself in the water, you sigh in relief as the stinging pain caused by the water rids you of your injury.
Once you’ve cleaned yourself up, you pull Katniss, the only person who seems to be awake, towards the water. With her determination and your strength, you get her to the edge of the water. You gently place one of her hands in the water, and she screams before the poison is released from her hand.
“The water- the water helped-“ Her strangled cry is heard by Peeta, who starts to pull himself towards the water as well.
You immediately move to Finnick’s side as you deliberately and slowly start to move him towards the water. Once Katniss and Peeta are mostly finished, they help you push Finnick fully into the water. He screams in agony as the three of you pour water over his body.
“Finnick-“
Emotions threaten to pour from your eyes and your mouth, but the sometimes-stoic Katniss composes herself before you can truly express how scared you are to lose Finnick.
“We need our weapons.”
Peeta and Katniss move to gather the weapons as you stay, dedicated, by Finnick’s side.
“C’mon, you need to get up. Who else is going to argue with Katniss over the simplest things?”
Finnick grumbles for a second before softly laughing.
At least I’ve made this shitty situation better for someone.
~
As Peeta gathers water from a nearby tree, you sit and pour water all over yourself in order to keep cool and clean any remaining toxins off of your skin. Finnick and Katniss do the same, but you give them space to talk things out with their words… instead of their fists.
They both mutter apologies to one another before Finnick pauses to stare blankly ahead. Your eyes catch sight of what he’s looking so intently at.
Mutts.
A gentle nod to Katniss alerts her of the situation as well, and she stands along with Finnick. You slowly try to back away before noticing that some are approaching from behind. You immediately backpedal next to Finnick and Katniss as they’re the only ones with proper weapons.
Where’s Peeta?
“Peeta.”
“Yeah?” Peeta looks up from the spiel towards Katniss.
“Back away from the tree, slowly.”
A growling mutt a few inches from his face causes Peeta to slowly back up towards the three of you. Once you’re all in the water, the mutts growl and slowly close in as your heart pounds.
What am I supposed to do with no weapon?
“Get to the beach.” Katniss tries to move towards the newly sighted Cornucopia, but two mutts block your last escape route.
Katniss pulls her bow back as the mutts continue to advance on you. A mutt makes the first leap towards you and Katniss, but Peeta quickly strikes it down with his machete. They all growl angrily before one lunges towards Katniss from the opposite side. She quickly shoots it down with an arrow before killing another when it’s barely tried to leap at her.
Peeta swipes at a mutt that approaches you before gently pushing you behind him.
“I owe you one for earlier.” Peeta recalls the fight at the Cornucopia, and you nod before centering yourself between Katniss, Peeta, and Finnick.
Finnick strikes a mutt down with his trident before smacking another back. Peeta continues to aimlessly swipe at a few mutts to keep them away, and you duck as Katniss shoots one over his shoulder. A mutt then jumps on Peeta and tries to sink its teeth into him, but he guts it with a blade through the stomach.
Katniss and Finnick work in harmony to push the mutts back before she successfully hits three mutts with her arrows and stabs the fourth with her bow. Peeta pulls his knife from the mutt before you help him up. The onslaught continues for a few moments which spreads seconds into eternal moments. You feel useless, but keeping yourself out of harm’s way is the best way you can help everyone.
A mutt tackles Katniss into the water, but Peeta quickly kills it and helps Katniss up.
“Come on, we got to get to the beach!”
Peeta leads the way as you follow behind Katniss. You turn back to assure that Finnick is still there - you’re worrying about him when he has a weapon, he’ll be fine, Sunny - as you try to navigate your way to the beach.
A mutt jumps on Katniss and Peeta which knocks them further away. A separate mutt eyes you before jumping, and you attempt to send a punch its way. It takes a bite on your outstretched arm as you cry out in pain. You manage to wrestle your arm out of its grasp before Finnick spears it with his trident.
“How bad is-“
A few small incisions line your dominant arm, and they sting like hell, but you can’t focus on that now.
“I’ll live.”
Finnick grabs your non-damaged hand as he spears another mutt that dares to approach him. He then lets go of your hand to kill a mutt that jumps on Katniss, but once she’s back on her feet, his hand finds yours again.
You gasp as you notice someone in camouflage with large bite marks covering their neck.
“Who is it?”
“It’s a Morphling,” Peeta explains to Katniss, “C’mon, help me get her.”
They grab the dying Morphling before dragging her to the beach. More mutts approach as Finnick lets go of your hand and pushes you ahead.
“I’ve got this - just watch them.”
You nod before turning to follow Katniss and Peeta. Despite your painful arm injury, you run through the forest just as you did before. Pain was an adrenaline booster for you, and it was a scratch compared to the injuries you got from messing around on rock cliffs and beaches back in District 4.
You make it to the beach as Katniss and Peeta bring the girl into the water. Finnick tumbles in behind you before quickly recovering and pushing the remaining mutts back. Once he realizes that the mutts aren’t going to follow him, his eyes meet yours.
“You arm-“
“Look,” You point at the sky as another canister falls from the sky towards you, “I told you I’d live. I might not be the capitol darling, but they can’t let go of their little sister that easily.”
Finnick reaches the canister before you do, and he opens it to quickly to dig out the gauze and skin-applicable pain medicine.
“I suppose they wouldn’t mind seeing the Capitol darling tend to their little sister, then?” Finnick’s lips quirk into a teasing smile as you sit on the beach and admire the sky.
“Well, I wouldn’t mind.”
“Then that’s the only opinion that matters.” He sits next to you, and you present your arm to him. “You’re tougher than you act, honey.”
“I thought you knew that already,” You look away for a moment to hide your embarrassment, “after all, I did learn from an amazing mentor.”
The medicine feels cold once it touches your skin, and you sigh in relief as the pain starts to fade away.
“Did anyone leave a note?” You ask as Finnick looks away for a moment. “Oh, so I’m the one who has an admirer, and you get-“
You yelp when Finnick starts to harshly apply the medicine.
“-Jealous much?” You roll your eyes as Finnick laughs.
“Is it bad that I want your eyes on me and me alone?”
You’re left speechless as you bite your lip nervously. The invisible tension, the string that draws you two together, is finally pulled to its breaking point as you realize how close Finnick truly is.
“It-“ You pause for a moment as your sunshine threatens to slip and reveal some deeper emotion in your heart, the one that you named before this fresh hell started. “It depends on what you’re going to do about it.”
Finnick sets down the medicine to grab the gauze, and once Finnick returns close to you, you push yourself on top of him to give him a kiss to release the emotions buried deep in your heart.
The sunshine clouds over as a storm brews, but you’re not scared of the damage that this thunderstorm will cause your mind. You’d accept once the outcome that you weren’t the one for him, that the signs were wrong and all in your head, and that-
Finnick kisses you back.
Oh shit.
Finnick kisses you. In the 75th Hunger Games. On TV. In front of thousands of his admirers.
Oh shit!
You pull away and place a hand over your mouth as you contemplate the absolute shitstorm you’ve just released on the both of you.
“You’re not a bad kisser, if that’s what you’re embarrassed about-“
“Finnick!” You squeak before smacking his arm.
“There’s only room for two people who can’t admit that they love each,” He nods at Katniss and Peeta in the distance, “and that image doesn’t quite fit either of us.”
“What are we, then?”
“Whatever you want to be.”

Bet On Me
A/N: This fic is definitely early, but I would like to work on that Finnick sequel fic and have it done before the fall semester starts, so this fic will be coming out now. Can't wait to listen to the Itzy album - there's already a lot of bops on that album, I know it. 😌 I also saw this picture and knew exactly what kind of fic I wanted to write.
TW: Ryujin is implied to be a street fighter or boxer, heavy descriptions of blood and injuries, descriptions of first aid and stitches, alcohol is consumed by both parties, plenty of cursing, and hurt and comfort in the literal sense.
Pairing: Ryujin x GN! Reader (romantic)
Summary: Ryujin has a unique habit of showing up your door in need of stitches and medical attention that you can barely provide. This time, however, a bottle of whiskey, the moonlight, and a sprained ankle help you move into the next phase of your relationship.
Tumblr media
The moonlight shines gently on you, casting your body in a gentle glow that captivates Ryujin when she stumbles through your front door.
"Ryujin..." You trail off as you quickly stand up and approach the doorframe in preparation to catch Ryujin if she succumbs to her injuries.
"You look heavenly." She shifts her weight onto one foot, and you notice that her left foot is lifted slightly into the air.
"You look like you're about to see heaven." Your eyebrows furrow with worry as you gently take her arm and wrap it around your shoulder. "Is your ankle broken?"
"Sprained," She corrects you before leaning on you, "and it's sweet to see you so worried about me."
You bite your lip before shaking your head.
"Please tell me that the other boxer looks worse." You sigh as you try to navigate yourself and Ryujin towards the bathroom.
"Yujin couldn't even walk out of the ring." Her triumphant smile cause your worry to fade for a moment before she curses in pain.
You pause to shift the majority of Ryujin's weight onto yourself, and you hear her sigh in relief as she relaxes against your body.
"Don't pass out on me now." You mutter under your breath before taking the final steps towards the bathroom.
~
You set Ryujin on the counter before grabbing the plastic boot and a pile of bandages from your bathroom closest.
"Can you manage-"
"I'll be fine, Doc." She offers you a weak smile as you hand her the materials.
She takes off her black boot, and you nearly gag at the sight of the purple and black bruises around her ankle. She weakly laughs at your reaction before coughing into her arm.
"No blood?" You ask as she checks her arm.
"No blood."
"Thank goodness." You mutter as she laughs again.
You reach towards the bathroom cabinet and pull out your first aid kit along with a gallon-sized bag of bandages.
"I hate how prepared you are." She says as she wraps her ankle.
"I hate how easily you manage to injury yourself." You shoot back.
"Touche."
You close the toilet seat before setting the medical equipment on the toilet lid. You slip past Ryujin, and the skin contact of her hand on yours sends your mind spiraling into a romantic wonderland of endless possibilities.
Don't think about that until she's thinking clearly - her brain is still in adrenaline mode from the fight, and she's going to say something that she doesn't mean.
That's, at least, what you tell yourself every time Ryujin comes crashing into your apartment in the middle of the night.
An insomniac made by inconsistent night shifts, late night worries, and one too many cups of caffeine, you were always up at late hours. You knew your neighbor was one too, as you often would hear her leave in the evening and return in the earliest hours of the morning, but you were shocked to see her crashed against the outside of your door one night.
You had no medical training or first aid kits, but she was breathing, and when you tried to call an ambulance, she gently grabbed your arm and insisted on trying to get back to her place. You, of course, refused, and with the help of YouTube and Ryujin's guidance, you managed to patch her back up.
You steadily improved in your skills as Ryujin's injuries became worse. Your hand still shaked when you did stitches, but that was because of Ryujin's words and actions. She'd take your other hand and squeeze it or flirt with you until you dug the needle too far in her skin.
"Why don't you say these sweet things to me when you're not bleeding excessively, huh?" You said as you cleaned her wounds with a disinfectant.
"This is the only time I ever see you. Come swing around my place, and I'll happily tell you everything you want to hear and so much more." She coyly says before locking eyes with you.
~
You return to the bathroom with a bottle of cheap whiskey and two plastic glasses.
"You ran out of disinfectant?" Ryujin asks as she latches up the last velcro strap on her boot.
"I wonder why." You mumble before quickly taking the cap off the whiskey and pouring two glasses.
You offer her one before taking the other glass.
"Thanks," She says as you gently press your glas against hers, "but I prefer the more expensive stuff."
She takes a small swig as you down the glass that you filled.
"Rough night?"
"Yeah, I had someone I care about show up at my door with very substantial injuries." You brush past her again to grab the first aid kit, a few bandages, and a wash cloth that's hanging off of a nearby towel rack.
You discard your empty cup before dabbing the washcloth with alcohol. You set the bottle on the ground after putting the cap back on.
Ryujin's eyes never leave you as you stand back up.
"Can you, uh..." You vaguely gesture to her shirt.
"Take off my shirt?"
"No, I just need you to lift it up." You shyly look away as she lifts it up a few inches from her waist.
While trying not to stare in admiration, you work on disinfecting her wounds.
"Fuck," She mumbles before taking a sip of whiskey, "I'm sorry about this."
"Huh?"
You step away for a moment to grab three bandages.
"The only time I ever see you is when I'm hurt," She bites her lip as you swiftly apply the bandages, "and I feel like I'm bothering you."
The softness in her eyes and the genuineness of her words causes you to pause.
"You're not... a bother, Ryujin," You study her body for a moment before deciding to work on her arms next, "and I actually look forward to seeing you if that doesn't sound fucked-up."
"Not in the slightest."
You grab her arm as a comfortable silence surrounds you two. You feel a sense of domestic comfort, like you two were always met to meet like this.
Her eyes don't leave you for a moment, but you don't feel scrutinized or uncomfortable under her gaze.
When you make your way to her face, you pause as your eyes connect. The unspoken tension between you two comes unbelievable visible, and you're suddenly aware of your close proximity to Ryujin's face.
"You know, I'd kiss you if you didn't have a cut on your lip." You tease as you line up a small bandage on her lip.
"Damn, I would've kissed you anyway."
You don't hesitate to toss the bandage on the floor before placing a hand on her cheek. She pulls you close, and her lips melt against yours.
When you taste a familiar metallic sting on your lips, you quickly pull away before wiping off her lip and yours with a towelette from the first aid kit.
"That hurt," She touches her lip with her finger while stating at the blood, "but it was so fucking worth it."
You laugh before grabbing the bandaid from the floor.
"Ready to finish up?"
"Y'know," She finishes off her whiskey before tossing the cup in the bin, "I think another kiss would help me through the pain."
You indulge her, of course, again and again until you're both satisfied.

The Man In The Mirror
A/N: Yo, two fics in a month on this blog. 😌 I'm on a roll so far. 😉 Also, this is meant to be a less serious reaction compared to the fics I've posted in the past and I'm dipping my toes into a new fandom, so I'm kind of nervous :) This is based on a real-life experience - mirror mazes are lots of fun, and I recommend trying one once in your life. 🫶 (Banner is not mine, I reblogged where I got it from earlier.)
TW: Reader gets lost in a mirror maze
Pairing: Obey Me Bros + Dateables + Luke x GN! MC/Reader (Platonic or Romantic, depending on preference [Luke is strictly platonic])
Summary: The Obey Me Brothers + Dateables + Luke's reaction to being in a mirror maze with Reader/MC
Tumblr media Tumblr media
gets both of you lost on accident but refuses to acknowledge that he's wrong. He will continue to walk around in circles until the end of time or until you decide to intervene.
Mammon, Luke
gets both of you lost on purpose because it's a very good excuse to spend more time with you. Also, seeing you cling to him like a scared puppy is too adorable since you don't want to separate from him.
Satan, Simeon, Solomon
wanders off and gets himself lost, and runs into a mirror at least twice. You'll have to play hero in about 15 minutes when he is less than thrilled about being stuck in the maze for this long.
Diavolo, Beelzebub
knows exactly where he's going, and leads you both out of there in record time. Does not give you any room to argue or explore - you're coming with him and getting out of here ASAP.
Lucifer, Barbatos, Levi
isn't going in the mirror maze. He'd much rather watch the chaos unfold from the outside. You can sit, watch, and laugh with him or be laughed at by him - it's all your choice.
Belphegor
a maze? Oh no, babes, this is a paradise filled with mirrors of him and him alone. Good luck trying to get him to want to go out with you - you're on your own for this one.

For the hell of it. I decided to make these to share anyway. Some little Obey Me! themed dividers for your posts. Originally made in hopes to add in the end of posts to help them show in tags because of the glitch/issue going on right now. But it didn't work...But these can still be used either way.
Like/Reblog if you use or save please. Thank you! 💜

Morning, Sunshine
A/N: Apologies for disappearing for two and a half months - life has been pretty chaotic and I’ve just been along for the ride as of late. I’m done writing for the Hunger Games for a bit - I have a small reaction idea for Obey Me plus I’m going to be ambitious and try to write something for Ryujin before the Itzy comeback, but we’ll see how far that ambition gets me. If you’re interested in a part two, however, send an ask or let me know in a reblog and I’ll happily move it up on my priority list.
TW: Ends on a cliffhanger, reader’s got some literal nerves and a serious case of obliviousness, canon-typical politics
Pairing: Finnick Odair x Reader (platonic but eventually grows to be romantic and slightly one-sided... for now :] )
Summary: A loving nickname given by your mentor when you were a tribute causes a butterfly effect that leads you back into the 75th Hunger Games as a much wiser person. This time, you realize that your affections for Finnick are more than platonic, but is it too late?
(<- Previous Part | Next Part -> | Series Masterlist)
Tumblr media
A simple nickname - that’s all it was supposed to be.
Your fellow District 4 tribute, as you were soon to learn, wasn’t a morning person. The morning after you arrived in The Capitol, you were greeted with the sound of the tribute loudly cursing out your mentor, Finnick.
What a lovely way to start your day.
You sleepily sigh before rolling over in the all-too-comfortable silk sheets provided by the Capitol. When you heard a knock on your door, you mumble an incoherent “Come in,” before sitting up in bed.
“Morning, Sunshine,” Finnick’s saccharine voice floated to your eardrums, “Did you sleep well?”
“Better than they did.” You vaguely gesture to your fellow tribute, who you can see rubbing their eyes before nearly bumping into a wall.
He chuckles softly with his blonde waves of hair bouncing in the air.
“C’mon, we’ve got a busy day ahead of us.”
Finnick taps the doorframe and offers you a warm smile before departing to round up the other tribute.
You manage to pull yourself out of bed and get ready for the day - the Hunger Games aren’t going to fight themselves, after all.
~
You weren’t sure when you grew close to Finnick, but it happened very suddenly. Despite his young age, he was a victor of the Hunger Games, and as charismatic as sin. The smiles spread wider, the stories became longer, and you became a strong competitor out of the pool of tributes.
Something Finnick had coached the District 4 tributes on, besides survival skills and fighting, was presentation and image.
“Be yourself, and if that’s not the image that the Capitol wants,” Finnick offers a not-so-secretive glance to your fellow tribute, which causes you to snicker under your breath, “perhaps being someone else for a few days isn’t a terrible idea.”
~
Interviews made you nervous - especially when it could be the last time that your loved ones saw you in your best clothes before they had to bury you a few weeks later. Caesar Flickerman did his best to make all of the tributes feel comfortable, but as your turn approached, you couldn’t help calm the nausea in your stomach.
When your name is called, you calmly walk onto the dazzling stage where Capitol citizen gawk at you like you are an animal on display. You nervously blink and approach Caesar, who offers you a smile.
You find yourself stumbling over your words and blinking a lot, but the crowd seems to enjoy the display that you’re putting on. You can’t tell if they’re mocking you or not, but they’re eating every word up.
You start to tell stories of your youth, your experiences in District 4, and finally, with the story of how you woke up a few mornings ago.
“I quite like the name Sunny, it suits you.” Caesar says as you smile. “Don’t you agree?”
When he gestures to the crowd, they go wild as a brighter smile rests on your face.
“Thank you, Caesar, it’s been a pleasure.” You shake his hand before waving to the crowd.
“No, Sunny, the pleasure is all mine.”
~
Finnick genuinely smiles at you with proudness shining in his eyes as Mags hugs you.
“All you’ve got to do now is keep up that ‘good kid’ image for the entire Hunger Games - think you can do that, sweetheart?”
Your stomach does a flip, but the nerves from your interview earlier in the evening are still making your head buzz and your stomach queasy, so you can’t tell why you react that way.
“I think I can manage.”
~
The Capitol’s Darling Little Sibling.
Sunny.
Those names had completely erased the one you had used before entering - and later, winning - the Hunger Games. Luckily, your involvements with the Capitol were limited to charity events and special galas, so you didn’t come home with the sour look that Finnick had on his face after he visited the Capitol.
You and Snow had an agreement - if you continued this charade for the rest of your life, you’d be free to live as a Victor and enjoy life post-Hunger Games.
After the announcement of the 75th Hunger Games happened, you nearly came storming into the Capitol to tell President Snow a piece of your mind.
~
Annie Cresta’s screams from a house over still haunt your memory, even though Finnick was there to comfort her. You didn’t want to bother them, so you found yourself in the company of Mags with a wine glass in your hand.
“I can’t-,” You pause before shaking your head, “I can’t let Annie go through that again. She won’t be able to come back to us.”
Mags takes your hand and points at herself with the other. Tears glisten in your eyes as you set aside your wine glass and take both of her hands in yours.
“I can’t let you go in either, Mags. It has to be me.”
You press your head against Mags’, and she combs through your hair with one hand as you look into your eyes. The same thought lingers in your brain as she pulls away from you.
“This stays between you and I, okay?”
Mags imitates closing her mouth with a lock before throwing away a key, and you laugh.
“You get me, Mags - I hope I have more moments to spend with you in the future.”
~
“Annie Cresta.”
You watch Annie nearly crumble to the ground with a hand over her mouth, so you take Mags’ hand with your left and raise the other hand in the air.
“I volunteer as tribute!”
The crowds screams and whoops as you let go of Mags’ hand and glance towards Annie. The relief is unspoken between you two, so you simply nod before approaching Finnick.
“Please tell me you’re not mad.” You mumble under your breath as you take his hand in yours.
His hands are warm, soft, and, more importantly, what you shouldn’t be focusing on in this very dire moment.
“I had a feeling it would be you,” He softly answers before raising your hand in the air along with his, “but hopefully you won’t have to kick my ass in the arena.”
You stifle a laugh as the crowd roars and chants your names together.
~
“The Girl on Fire is pretty hot to the touch, huh?” You tease Finnick as he climbs back into the carriage with you. “Not everyone is susceptible to your charms, after all.”
He nudges your shoulder before offering you a sugar cube.
“Does that include you?”
You bite your lip before smacking his bare shoulder.
“Don’t get any ideas, pretty boy,” You jokingly say, “you need to focus on the Hunger Games, first and foremost.”
“So you’re going to charm Katniss Everdeen?” Finnick chuckles as you chew on the sugar cube that he hands you. “Good luck, then.”
“I think you’ll find that I can charm anyone and everyone, including you, Finnick.”
~
In the training room, you keep to yourself, your fish hooks, and your thoughts as you tie a knot to secure the hook to your makeshift bobber.
You were let in on a revolutionary and, if you were being frank, one-in-a-million chance of escaping the hell that you’re currently trapped in. It involved one mission - getting Katniss Everdeen out of the games in one piece.
That, unfortunately, would be impossible unless someone could manage to gain her trust and-
“It’s beautiful.”
Katniss’ voice breaks you from your thoughts, and you shyly move so she can see what you’re working on.
“I saw you volunteer for that girl - it was really brave.” She continues as you feel her gaze study your every movement.
“We put ourselves through the worst torture for the ones that we care about.” You wistfully say before offering Katniss a welcoming smile.
“But Prim was my sister-“ She pauses, noticing the way your eyes soften, before continuing, “Can you… can you teach me how to make a fish hook like that, and I’ll teach you how to hunt?”
You bow your head in shame for a moment.
So she saw me struggle with hunting in my own games…
You look up before nodding.
“The devil’s in the details,” You move aside once again so she can get a better look, “so you need to pay close attention, alright?”
~
“She trusts you,” Haymitch says in between drinks of whiskey, “so the only problem you have to deal with is keeping her arrows from making their way into Finnick’s chest.”
“She can’t be that bad, right?”
Haymitch chuckles under his breath.
“Just keep an eye on her, and I’ll do what I can.”
~
“Sunny?”
“Finnick.” You sleepily mumble before gently moving to make room on the couch.
“You should be sleeping.”
“Too much to think about.”
You hear him sigh before settling into the cushion next to you.
“Are you worried about-“
“Is it that obvious?” You look over at Finnick as he teasingly smiles at you.
“You never could hide anything from me, sweetheart.”
Your stomach fills with nerves, but you’ve been on edge from the idea of going back into the arena, so you brush off the notion that you may be in love with-
“Just promise me that you’ll be safe.” You slide your hand next to his, and without any hesitation, he takes your hand and gives it a slight squeeze.
“For you?” He chuckles softly before looking away, “Always.”
~
You pull your stylist into a warm hug as they tearfully wish you the best. They’ve been styling you since you first arrived in the Capitol years ago, and a part of you will miss the people who helped you be Sunny while working for the Capitol.
I can’t think about that right now.
You pull your head back into the games as you step on the pedestal that’ll put you into the arena.
You’re nervous for Peeta and Katniss - you can’t imagine how scared literal teenagers are about facing off against seasoned adults - but a part of you worries for Finnick as well. He’s a vulnerable person underneath the charisma, charms, and flirting, and if the Capitol gets ahold of him, you’d-
You wouldn’t let that happen. You’d happily put yourself in harm’s way if it meant that Finnick would be safe.
In that moment, you remember why they call you Sunny: you’re warm and protective, especially towards the ones that you love.
Love.
You do love him.
And then the pedestal shoots you into the arena.
