Weddingdress of Princess Mabel van Oranje-Nassau, 2004
Silk satin duchesse, cr锚pe georgette
Royal Collections, The Netherlands
In 2004, Mabel Wisse Smit (*1968) married Prince Friso van Oranje-Nassau (1968-2013), the second son of then Queen Beatrix of the Netherlands. Mabel commissioned Viktor&Rolf to design her wedding dress because she wanted it to be extravagant and unconventional. The result was this spectacular satin dress, which took more than 600 hours to make and is decorated with 264 silk bows. Bows are particularly appropriate for a wedding dress, as the knot traditionally represents enduring love. Viktor&Rolf use ribbons and bows in many of their collections. In their Flower-bomb collection (2005), the designers created several dresses that looked like elaborately wrapped gifts with rather exaggerated bows.
