K-pop: In Honor Of My Mom
Hey guys!
Wow can you believe its been 6 weeks since I posted my first blog, time went by fast. Speaking of time going by fast, today makes a year of my mother’s passing and in memory of her I wanted to make this blog about the music that really brought us together and what we would bond over. What type of music is that you ask?...and if you didn’t ask that’s ok, I’ll tell you anyways. It was K-pop. Yes, Korean Pop Music was our shared hobby and many of the memories I have of my mom are over how we would watch and listen to K-pop.
So with that being said, my blog today is going to be a little bit different. Instead of talking about our top 5 Korean boybands or top 5 Korean songs, I’m going to combine the two and talk about how the song or the group reminds me of my mom specifically.
So as always, get comfortable, relax, and enjoy the blog!
If you’re a K-pop fan or at least know something about it, then I’m sure all of you would know something about the boy group BTS. This group was actually the first group that started it all for me, and the first group I showed my mom. (Of course this was way before they were mainstream popular)
Tumblr media
I remembered that it was in the car when I played for her the songs I Need You, Not Today, Blood Sweat & Tear, and many other songs from them. She was actually surprised because she told me that she didn’t think that Koreans, or any other country for that matter, would make songs or sing. I don’t blame her for her way of thinking because my mother, a Hispanic women leaving her country in search for a better life, grew up only knowing about working and take care of her family, so the fact that she didn’t think about something else that wasn’t that, wasn’t a shock to me, but I really admired her open mind and willingness to learn more about other cultures after that day.
Tumblr media
This song right here, Boy In Luv, was the one she would try and sing. I would catch her humming it or saying a few lyrics while we would go out shopping or clean the house together. How cute was she =)!!
But the songs that she really liked the most were from the group BTOB, or as she would call them, “The Elegant Group”.
Tumblr media
This group is really goofy and funny, but each member is extremely talented with their vocals and song writing skills!
In this band my mom actually learned all of the names to each member, and was even able to tell some of them apart by their voice. She would even give some of their songs different names. For example, Pray I’ll Be You’re Man she would say “No hay para que” and the song Insane, she would say “Eso que ni que”, and she got those names based off of how she would hear the lyrics say. Again...how cute was she!!
Here’s a list of BTOB songs that were our top favorites and how some of them remind me of her.
Irresistible Lips
Pray I’ll Be Your Man
Insane
Missing You    (Her favorite look for them)
Only One For Me  (Was excited when the album came in)
Beep Beep   (We would do the little chorus dance move together)
Blowin’ up   (Liked repeating the chorus and adding her own lyrics to it)
Someday   (Her favorite song! She would stop whatever she was doing to go stand in front of the television to watch the music video, and would even tell me that she could see them singing it whenever she was just hearing the song without watching the video)
Tumblr media
I really wish this group was more recognized and popular so that they could get the recognition they deserve. That...plus I would love to see them one day in concert, but the way things are right now who knows when that’s going to happen, plus they have never done a concert here in America.
Another group that we would bond over was GOT7, and as you guys can guess, she would also change the lyrics to some of their songs. In this case it was Hard Carry and Never Ever.
Tumblr media
(Speaking of GOT7...their new album came out this week on Monday! Go Check It Out!!)
In the group there’s a member named Im Jaebum, or JB for short, and we would talk about how his vocals were high and clear. Especially in his song Sunrise from the album Lullaby. Speaking of Lullaby, the group made 4 different versions of this song, Korean, Chinese, English, and Spanish. Since we’re Hispanic, obviously we would listen to the Spanish version…and…being fans of JB, we would admire his vocals in that song too!
Tumblr media
I’ll never forget how happy and supportive she was of me buying a ticket and going to their concert in 2018. She was my #1 supporter, gosh I love her and miss her!
There’s another Korean singer that would also grab our attention because of his high notes. His name is Lee Hong Gi. He’s also a member in the Korean rock band F.T.Island, but we would love his solo work more.
Tumblr media
The song and music video that we would love watching was Monologue, and his vocals in this song would just leave us amazed. To this this day, I still can’t listen to this song without getting emotional, but the memories of us listening to it will always be there.
Tumblr media
Another underappreciated artist. Both his solo songs and group songs are great. Plus his voice are just incredible. I suggest listening to Yellow, Wind, Pray, and Paradise.
Obviously, there are way more songs and artists that remind me of my mom, like WINNER, BIGBANG, Eric Nam, the song O Sole Mio by SF9, and many more but this blog is getting long.
Since her passing, there’s been a lot of new songs from the artists that we both loved, and I know that she would have loved their new music.
I’ll never forget how my mom would encourage me to buy merchandise for us. That is why we ended up having so many posters, rings, pillows, shirts and many other stuff from all these K-pop groups we liked. I will also never forget how excited she would get whenever my new albums would come in, and she would go in my room with the package and ask “What did we get…” knowing that it was K-pop related. Her personality was so cute and adorable, and I know that she probably did all of that because she knew I liked them, and just wanted to make me happy. For that I will always have her in my memories, love her, cherish her, and appreciate her as an amazing mother should be appreciated.
Well guys this is the end of my blog. I would also like to thank you guys for taking the time to read my blogs, and remember that you can also reach me on my other social media accounts.

Jackson Wang: 5 Facts
Tumblr media
Hey guys!
What a long and stressful week its been. So much work to do and so little time. But despite all that, it has also been a blissful week, hope you guys have been surviving this quarantine because I don’t even know what day it is anymore. I’m not going to lie, but I didn’t know what to make this week’s blog about, and it was hard finding a topic. However,…I’ve decided to blog about an artist that release a new song a few weeks ago and whom I haven’t heard in awhile. Who is that you ask, well its none other than Jackson Wang. If you don’t know who he is don’t worry, I’m about to gave you 5 interesting facts about him. So as you guys know, get comfortable, relax, and enjoy the blog!
Tumblr media
#5. Multi Languages
Born and raised in Hong Kong, Jackson actually attended an American international school where he learned English, but English is not the only language this singer knows. He is also fluent in Mandarin, Cantonese, Shanghainese, Japanese, and Korean. Wow! Where did he find the time to learn 6 different languages, as well as, write songs, learn choreography, practice fencing, attend school, and workout? I can barely do homework and find time to sleep. What an inspiration.
Tumblr media
#4. Collaboration w/ Gucci Mane
One of the interesting things about Jackson is that he collaborates with many different artists, whether it was for a clothing brand or a new music video. One of the collaborations he did was for his song Different Game, where he asked Gucci Mane if he wanted to come out in his music video. To his surprise, Gucci Mane agreed and soon they were going to Hawaii to record the new video. Gucci Mane also hyped up Jackson in his album Evil Genius, where one of the verses of his song says, “Balling like Lamar/ Jackson a dual threat” and “You just a freshman you still ain’t in the leagues yet”, addressing those who are not at the level that Jackson is.
Tumblr media
#3. Fendi
Jackson isn’t shy to show his admiration for Fendi, he even released a song called Fendiman as the brand’s ambassador in China. Not just that, but he also was able to collaborate with the brand and make his own collection. His collection consists of ready-to-wear pieces that have a black monochromatic FF logo and velvet construction. Accessories include a Baguette bag with the luxury house released for men, a clutch, baseball hat, as well as limited edition sneakers and slide sandals.
Tumblr media
(what a beautiful GIF, I had to include it haha!)
#2. Got7
If you guys know me then you know that GOT7 is one of my top favorite K-Pop groups out there. Really have to thank my friend Denise for showing me this group, she sent me into a blackhole that was GOT7 but it was all for the best.
GOT7 debuted in January of 2014 under JYP Entertainment. In the group Jackson is one of the rappers and dancers that makes the group whole. During their tour, on their American stop, they appeared on the Today Show, where as you can guess it, Jackson was one of the members that was able to translate for the group and was the comedian on television.
I recommend watching their American interview videos if you guys want to have a good laugh, and it will be something to do to entertain yourself with in this quarantine. Just saying.
Tumblr media
#1. Solo Career
Thanks to the help of the company JYP, Jackson was able to form his own agency and start is own solo career, also known as Team Wang. As a soloist we have already learned about his collaborations with artists and brands, but we haven’t talked about his solo songs. On 2017 his first solo song came out called Papillion. To be honest with you guys I didn’t like it at first but it actually grows on you after you hear it a few times. His other song OKAY, however, was an instant like for me. To say that it is my national anthem would be correct, not only that, but my mom used to tell me to play that song for her, so my guess is that she used to like it too. Since then he has released more hit songs. His latest song 100 Ways has gotten 17M views on YouTube, not to mention that the choreography to the song has gotten popular on TikTok. So if you haven’t heard any of his solo songs I’ll list them down below, and for all of you that say “I dOn’T LiKE sOngs WhEre I CaN’t UndErsTanD tHe LyrIcs, Or dOn’T KnOw wHaT TheY’Re sAyiNg” don’t worry that most of Jackson’s songs are in English.
Well guys this has been my blog for this week. Its shorter than my past blogs but hopefully you enjoyed reading it, and learned new things about Jackson or who he is. I really do recommend you guys listening to his songs because they are catchy and he’s such a visual!
Here’s the list of his songs I recommend:
OKAY….(this one is my favorite)
Dawn of us
Fendiman
TITANIC (feat. Rich Brian)
Papillion
100 Ways
Oxygen
Different Game (feat Gucci Mane)
Bullet to the Heart
Made It
As always feel free to reach out to me and let me know what song was your favorite!

Learn To Play Happy Birthday On The Guitar: Easy 25 Notes
Hey guys!!
How’s everyone on this lovely day? It’s Friday! Yay, but I guess that doesn’t mean anything now since everything is closed, and we have to stay indoors. However, that doesn’t mean that you have to miss this opportunity to do something that you’ve always wanted to do, such as read a book, draw, paint, make the new recipes you saw on Pinterest, or learn to play an instrument.
Speaking of which, do you guys want to learn how to play Happy Birthday on the guitar? Since we are in quarantine and you might know someone that is having a birthday coming up, maybe you might want to play them a song on the guitar to show them that even though you couldn’t get together to celebrate, you’re still thinking about them on their special day.
You guys might not know how to play the guitar and that is fine, I will explain it in a clear simple way for everyone to understand and follow.
If you guys are ready then as always, get comfortable, relax, and enjoy the blog!
Tumblr media
If you have never played the guitar in your life or it has been awhile, then let me start out by explaining the parts we are going to use to play Happy Birthday.
We are going to use:
The first three frets
The first three strings
And that’s it, its that easy!
If you don’t know what a fret is, it is usually a metal strips that separates the neck of the guitar into small segments. As shown on the picture below
Tumblr media
To play Happy Birthday, we are only using the first top three.
First fret you will play it with your index finger.
Second fret with your middle finger.
Third fret with your ring finger.
On the guitar, the strings are numbered starting from the bottom. This will mean that the thinnest string is number 1 and the last string which is the thickest is number 6. Each string has its name, if we start with the top one going down (in other words, staring from 6 going to 1) the stings will be: E, A, D, G, B, E.
Tumblr media
But to make it easier, I will only say the string number.
The good thing is that we will only be using the first three strings, so I’ll be saying “1st string, 2nd string, 3rd string” instead of E, B, G!
I have also made it easier for you guys to see what strings your fingers are supposed to go on and what string to strum (or play).
(Strum: sweeping the thumb up or down across the strings)
The open light blue circles mean that you only have to strum the string. Don’t put your finger on it.
The closed circle (or the one that is shaded in) means that you have to put your finger on it while strumming the string.
Ok!! I think we are ready to start!
Note 1:  2nd fret, 3rd string open
Tumblr media
Note 2: 2nd fret, 3rd string open
Tumblr media
Note 3: 2nd fret, 3rd string closed

Note 4: 2nd fret, 3rd string open

By now you have just finished playing a song on the guitar!! So it should sound something like this...(click the link below)!

Just keep practicing and within a day you’ll be able to play Happy Birthday to your family and friends.
Hope you guys enjoyed this blog and as always, stay safe, stay indoors, wash your hands, and do things you enjoy doing!

Top 5 Songs: For When You’re Feeling Down
Tumblr media
Hey guys!
How’s everyone doing? Personally for me, this week hasn’t been the best and my mood has been down lately. I had a different idea for a blog I wanted to do for you guys, but because of my low spirits, I decided to do a blog on the songs I been listening to this week. I don’t know about you guys, but whenever I’m feeling down I like to listen to music that is sad or just sounds sad. If you guys have been following up on my previous blogs then you can tell that my music is quite diverse, so don’t be surprised that I listen to sad music. It’s actually one of my favorite genres because I feel that sad music just has more emotions to it and are more relatable than any other music out there.
Well since you guys are busy people, and I’ve been doing Top 5’s for my last two blogs, I’m going to continue that and make this a short blog with my Top 5 songs for this week.
So, you guys know the drill…get comfortable, relax, and enjoy the blog!
Tumblr media
#5. The Gift by Seether
This song, in my opinion, can relate to anyone. If you have heard about Seether and know about the singer, then you would know that he has had an addiction problem. Now, I’m not saying I have an addiction problem, or that you need to have an addiction problem to relate with this song, (the song doesn’t even mention anything about one having an addiction), but it is one of those songs that is freely open to interpretation, which is what I like about it. This is what makes the song feel so relatable with so many people going through different situations.

Tumblr media
#4. Vision of Gideon by Surjan Stevens
This song right here hits me right in my feelings every single time I hear it. Not only did it set the correct mood for the ending of Call Me By Your Name, but the lyrics just give it the right representation of what the whole movie was about in a much deeper meaning. For those of you that have watched the movie and know what song I’m talking about, hopefully you can agree with what I am saying. If you haven’t seen the movie, but have experience a heartbreak where you thought you were going to be with someone for a long time, but in the end it turns out that all you have now are the memories of them, then this is the song you should listen to.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NJLs-4J5ZYk
Tumblr media
#3. Outside by Staind
Let me start out by saying that Staind was going to come here to Houston with Disturbed on August 27, but now, thanks to the rona, I don’t think I’ll be seeing them…
They are one of my favorite bands, and the song Outside is one of my top favorites from them. I don’t know what it is but songs that have lyrics with such a deeper meaning to them, grab my attention. Not just that, but the singer, Aaron, just sings with so much emotions that even though I wasn’t in a relationship when I first heard this song, I could still feel the pain he was going through. If you guys ever feel like you’re in a relationship where your partner has changed or on the inside they're not as nice as their outside then you guys will relate to this song guaranteed.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mVQpfoqsY8Q
Tumblr media
#2. Snuff by Slipknot
I’m really hitting my middle school days with this one. Personally, I think that this song can have many different meanings to it. For me, I think that this song is about someone that loved their partner so much, but was hurt and abandoned by them which has now made them depressed and feeling dead inside with no hope. Other people would say that it is about someone that is just too dark inside to let love in, so they will just push the other person away. Let me know what you guys think about it if you hear it or have heard it before.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Yi0YbsT0TJ0
Tumblr media
#1. Bother by Stone Sour
This song has been on repeat for me this week which is why its my #1. In addition to having deep lyrics, the music video is also very thought provoking in my opinion. This song poetically explains the depression that the singer, Corey Taylor, might had been going through. Explaining that misunderstandings and disappointments are what’s to blame for his life being so hard.
Fun Fact: If you guys didn’t know, Corey Taylor is also the singer of Slipknot. What a talented man to be able to have two great bands that are currently still touring.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Q-pXD0FXLQ8
Well guys, hopefully this week hasn’t been terrible for you as it was for me. Let’s see how it goes next week. As always, stay safe, stay indoors, wash your hands, and watch the Tiger King if you haven’t because why not right.
Here’s a list of other sad songs I recommend listening to:
By the Way – Theory of a Dead Man
Dark Paradise – Lana Del Rey
Broken - Seether
Lonely day – System of a Down
Dreamer – Ozzy Osbourne
Epiphany – Staind
Everything Changes – Staind
The Feel Again (Stay) – Blue October
How To Dance In Time – Blue October
California – Lana Del Rey
The Sound Of Silence - Disturbed
Feel free to reach out to me through my other social media accounts and don’t forget to follow! Hope everyone has a nice day!

My Top 5 Synthwave Songs
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Hey guys!
How’s everyone holding up with this social distancing and quarantine we are going through? I know that I’m for sure missing going out and eating Korean food at Bellaire. Hopefully you guys are doing well and just know that together we will get through this!!
This week I wanted to make a blog about songs that give me a spacey type 80’s feeling to them. The inspiration behind that was The Weeknd’s new album, After Hours, but I’ll talk about that later. For now, you guys can distract yourselves for a few minutes by reading my Top 5 Synthwave Songs list, so just like last week, get comfortable, relax, and enjoy the blog!
#5. Odd Look by Kavinshy
Tumblr media
If you guys are a fan of The Weeknd and his music, then you might have heard this song before. He did a remix of it on July 24, 2013, where he added his unique clear high notes to it, however, the original song by Kavinshy came out on June that same year. Kavinshy’s style was more synthwave electronic music, and although I personally think that the original songs are always the best ones, this time I feel like the singing that was in Kavinshy’s version was not the best and could have been done better. However, the key focus was the beat of the music in my opinion, which in that case he did an extremely well job delivering.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qT0iQRjHbW4
#4. Tech Noir by Gunship
Tumblr media
Gunship, for those of you that haven’t heard of them, is a British synthwave band that was formed in 2014. Just like Odd Look, this song had a remix done by Carpenter Brut, a synthwave artist from France, but unlike Odd Look, I will say that the original song was better (as it tends to always be, just saying...). The music video is also entertaining to watch because its like we are watching a mini 80’s movie that was done entirely out of clay! How cool!
Also, here’s a random fun fact! Tech Noir was the name of the nightclub in the first Terminator movie! Ha, the more you know!
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-nC5TBv3sfU
#3.Shot at The Night by The Killers
Tumblr media
I…love The Killers. They have so many good songs out there, such as, When You Were Young, Mr. Brightside, and Somebody Told Me. Although, the band is classified as being a rock band formed in 2001, the songs from this group feel more like pop rock and indie to me. The song, Shot at The Night is different though, because the style is more like synthpop which makes it very unique in my opinion. The uplifting beat and the singer’s vocals really make the song catchy and puts you in a really good mood. Check it out if you haven’t heard it already!
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=X4YK-DEkvcw
#2. Holding on For Life by Broken Bells
Tumblr media
By now, some of you guys might be think “Lou, how the heck do you know all of these bands with weird names, and that I have never heard of before?”…. Honestly, I don’t know what to tell you except…”how do you not know these bands?”…. I think that’s the real question here.
This song, Holding on For Life, actually reminds me of high school when I was in 11th grade, wow, that was a long time ago, 2013 to be more exact. Since then, this song has been a top favorite of mine with its 80’s feel and synthpop. The music video actually shows some form of spacesuits, rocket ships, some aesthetic-ness, and psychedelic-ness (I’m making up words now), very space trippy music if you ask me. I don’t know how else to explain it better, but seriously, put this song on your playlist because it’s a very well composed song.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uhBewKu80Mg
#1. Blinding Lights by The Weeknd
Tumblr media
How can I not include a song that inspired this blog?! If you guys haven’t heard The Weeknd’s new album, I suggest going and listening to it after reading this blog. The Album in its entirety gives a very calm and relaxing vibe, while at the same time making you want to dance.
The song Blinding Lights actually came out before the album, but if you haven’t heard the song yet, don’t worry the link is right below. As you guys might have guessed it already, this song has a very synthpop beat to it, making it feel like its an 80’s song, and making you feel nostalgic. If this song doesn’t make you feel happy, then I don’t know what will.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4NRXx6U8ABQ
Since I know you guys are busy people and might want to start listening to these five songs I talked about, I’ll end my blog here.
Once again, I would like to thank everyone that took the time to read what I had to say, and please feel free to leave a comment telling me what song you guys liked or recommend me listening to next.
If for some reason you’re unable to leave me a comment here, feel free to reach out to me through my other social media accounts…and follow!
I hope everyone has a nice day!

Serj Tankian: A Virtuoso Man
Tumblr media
Hi guys!
I hope everyone is safe and are finding ways to distract yourself from the pandemic that’s going on outside. Since I know most of us are in quarantine right now and are probably getting bored of staying indoors, I wanted to create this blog and talk about the musician Serj Tankian.
I am aware that many people will not know who he is or have not even heard of the band System of a Down. If you’re one of them, that’s fine. I’m going to share 5 facts about Serj that I thought were interesting and good-to-know if this is your first-time hearing about him. So, get comfortable, relax, and enjoy the blog!
#5. Tankian Receives Metal by the Prime Minister
Tumblr media
While Serj Tankian was in Armenia for a concert, he received an award from the Prime Minister, Tigran Sargsyan, for his contribution of recognizing the Armenian Genocide. The Prime Minister pointed out Serj’s support for developing rock music in the Republic of Armenia, since the music was uniting other Armenian rock bands in the country.
Now, I don’t know many artists that are awarded a medal for their rock music by the Prime Minister, but I personally thought that was really cool.
#4. He’s One of the Greatest Vocalists in Metal History
Tumblr media
In Hit Parader magazine, Serj was ranked number 26 on the top 100 Heavy Vocalists list. Which I agree with because his vocals are very unique and distinctive. If you guys haven’t heard any of his songs I will recommend some at the end of this blog!
#3. Activism for Human Rights
Tumblr media
Some of the things that Serj has been passionate about have been human rights, social justice, and recognizing genocides. If you have been a long time listener like I have, you can say that his passions are what have influenced his style of lyrics, and what have inspired him to cover many important issues in his songs.
For example, he address issues on war on terror, genocide, overpopulation, the American prison system, and other environmental issues. His passions have also motivated him to organize and participate in protests along with American musician, Tom Morello.
#2. Solo Career
Tumblr media
As a solo artist, Serj released five solo albums between 2007- 2013. Here is where Serj gets unique and creative with his albums, because he decided to mix up this style of music as a solo artist, and focus on other genres instead of just rock. In his album Orca Symphony No.1, it took the form of a classical symphony and he added orchestras in his music, saying “I want the orchestra to be the electric guitar. I want to make an orchestra do what it has never done before….”He also included jazz and some electronic music to his work, making these albums more instrumental and less vocal.
#1. System of a Down
Tumblr media
Lastly... System of a Down. One of my favorite bands of all time. You can say they’re part of my childhood since I started listening to them at the age of 6.
Now, where to begin...?
Back in the day, in 1994 to be more exact, Serj along with Daron Malakian, Shavo Odadjian, and John Dolmayan, formed the band most of us know today, as System of a Down. The name actually came from a poem that Malakian had written called, “Victims of a Down”, but since they wanted to appeal to a much greater audience, they decided to change victims into system, pretty smart if you ask me.
The band had a successful start to their career and accomplished to release five studio albums. Three of those albums debuted at number one on the US Billboard 200, and the band was also nominated for four Grammy Awards, with their song “B.Y.O.B.” winning the Grammy Award for Best Hard Rock Performance in 2006.
However, that same year the band went on hiatus, giving Serj time to work on some solo projects. The band hasn’t officially broken up, since in 2010-2015 they reunited to do some live performances but let’s hope we get some new material in the near future.
With that being said, lets also hope they make a North American Tour and come to…oh, I don’t know…maybe a city called Houston located in Texas, so that we (meaning I) can see this great band perform live.
So if you guys know how to make that happen… lets make it happen then!
Well, since by now you might be a little bit more curious to hear some System of a Down songs, and might be looking for something to do after reading this blog,  I’m going to recommend my top 10 favorite songs by them.
Aerials
Toxicity
Chop Suey!
Spiders
Question!
B.Y.O.B
Forest
Prison Song
Psycho
Lost In Hollywood
If you guys made it to the end, I would like to say...Thank You...for reading my first ever blog! And if you guys get a chance to listen to the songs I listed above, I would love hear which ones you guys liked best.
Thank you!
Lou
