When my two favorite worlds collide you can bet I’m a happy camper. 🎩👒🐺I had the absolute honor to create this #gentlemanjack illustration for @jenn.zieska! This tattoo taught me a lot. It taught me patience and how to work with delicate skin and it taught me to take risks that ultimately paid off. “I understand why you can’t commit to me. It’s impossible, I know. How could anyone? What am I? Everyday, everyday I rise above it, the things people say. I walk into a room or down the street, and see the way people look at me, and the things they say and I rise above it, because I’ve trained myself to, not to see it and hear it, until it’s become second nature to me, and I forget, just how impossible it is for someone else to accept that.....but, you came so close.” I think we were all a little bit wrecked and heartbroken after Episode 6 of #gentlemanjack last week. Anyone who presents themselves as different or queer can relate to these words and feelings. Over the past week I’ve put every spare minute I’ve had into this piece. It’s not my usual but the scenes so affected me that I felt compelled to make this. Hundreds of layers, 14 hours of pencil time recorded and that’s not including the time I spent staring at it nit picking and struggling with all sorts of things. I’m so happy this show resonates with so many women and I hope to have done it some justice. What started as what was supposed to be a simple sketchy drawing morphed into something I could be a little more happy with. I’ve become very intrigued by this historical figure #annelister (as played by #SuranneJones in #GentlemanJack) who made no apologies for being a lesbian in the 1800s. I may or may not be completely infatuated with #gentlemanjack on #HBO. The period drama follows the diaries of #AnneLister was an English landowner, diarist, mountaineer, and traveller from Yorkshire. Throughout her life, she kept diaries that chronicled the details of her daily life, including her lesbian relationships, her financial concerns, her industrial activities, and her work improving Shibden Hall in West Yorkshire. Her diaries contain more than 4 million words and about a sixth of them — those concerning the intimate details of her romantic and sexual relationships — were written in code. The code, derived from a combination of algebra and Ancient Greek, was deciphered in the 1930s. Lister is often called "the first modern lesbian" for her clear self-knowledge and openly lesbian lifestyle. I had 10 minutes to kill before I wanted to leave work and so I thought oh I’ll try and draw @suranne_jones from memory! That’ll be fun. For every little girl who looked for themselves on-screen growing up looking for a woman who represented them. Who wasn’t a princess but a role model of strength, courage and individuality. A wicked smart clever girl who went out and got what she wanted out of life. I know she isn’t perfect, she’s human but what she accomplished is truly inspiring.

I feel like this is that thing for me, we finally got our grandiose romantic ending and so I drew our triumphant lovers returning to each other in a “Disney-esque” style. I hope you like it.
