I personally think vultures are pretty awesome! This is a White-backed Vulture, an Old World Vulture. They are the most common large vulture in Africa. Although they are the most common species, they are currently listed as Critically Endangered and their numbers are decreasing. Poisoning is the biggest threat to all the vultures in Africa 😞 "Seven of Africa’s eleven vulture species now find themselves on the edge of extinction, and their decline has been alarmingly rapid over the last 50 years: numbers have fallen by 80-97 per cent depending on the species. There are eight vulture species in Kenya. Four of these, namely the White-backed Vulture, Rüppell’s Vulture, White-headed Vulture and Hooded Vulture, are considered Critically Endangered on the IUCN Red List of threatened species." Happy World Rhino Day! 🦏 When we first arrived at Lake Nakuru National Park, we were lucky enough to spot both White and Black Rhinos within minutes. I couldn't believe it! Here are a couple shots of the Black Rhino. They are not that great since they were far away, but I'm still happy I was able to get a shot of these beautiful creatures! 🦏 Lake Nakuru is currently home to the largest number of rhinos in Kenya, with 80% being white rhinos and 20% being black rhinos. "The number of black rhinos in Kenya plummeted from about 20,000 in 1970 to fewer than 280 individuals in the 1980s because of indiscriminate poaching. The remaining populations of rhinos were at risk of survival because they were too few and spread out to breed successfully." - @savetherhinointernational The rhino sanctuary was established in 1984 when the first two rhinos were introduced to the lake Nakuru National Park grounds. "Lake Nakuru National Park was chosen as the first Rhino sanctuary because it was already a bird sanctuary and it had the needed land for the rhinos to be relocated at the time. Also because rhinos need water every day, the presence of the lake made it advantageous for rhinos to make their life in the park; the vegetation in the park is also suitable for both the white and black rhinos, so Lake Nakuru National Park was and still is the perfect place for the rhino sanctuary. Mother nature can be disturbing at times, although the circle of life must continue. We saw this lion after he had already finished his hunt. He was carrying the wildebeest away to a safe spot to eat. While doing this, he would often get tired and would stop for a minute to rest. At one point he stopped just in next to the cars that were watching him. It is truly an amazing moment when you see flamingos in the wild 🦩 I have always loved seeing them in nature documentaries, but didn't think I would get the chance to see them in person! We saw thousands of them at Amboseli National Park and Lake Nakuru! We saw two different types of flamingos, the Greater Flamingo and the Lesser Flamingo. The one pictured is the Lesser Flamingo. Both types share the same habitat and live in flocks of between ten individuals to over ten thousand. Flamingos mate for life and the majority of them breed in Lake Natron, a remote soda lake in Tanzania. Look at this amazing bird we found in the Maasai Mara! It is called a African Paradise-Flycatcher.
