Mizu, femininity, and fallen sparrows

In my last post about Mizu and Akemi, I feel like I came across as overly critical of Mizu given that Mizu is a woman who - in her own words - has to live as a man in order to go down the path of revenge.

If she is ever discovered to be female by the wrong person, she will not only be unable to complete her quest, but there's a good chance that she'll be arrested or killed.

So it makes complete sense for Mizu to distance herself as much as possible from any behavior that she feels like would make someone question her sex.

I felt so indignant toward Mizu on my first couple watchthroughs for this moment. Why couldn't Mizu bribe the woman and her child's way into the city too? If Mizu is presenting as a man, couldn't she claim to be the woman's escort?

However, this moment makes things pretty clear. Mizu knows all too well the plight of women in her society. She knows it so well that she cannot risk ever finding herself back in their position again. She helps in what little way she can - without drawing attention to herself.

Mizu is not a hero and she is not one to make of herself a martyr - she will not set herself on fire to keep others warm. There's room to argue that Mizu shouldn't prioritize her quest over people's lives, but given the collateral damage Mizu can live with in almost every episode of season 1, Mizu is simply not operating under that kind of morality at this point. ("You don't know what I've done to reach you," Mizu tells Fowler.)

And while I still feel like Mizu has an obvious and established blind spot when it comes to Akemi because of their differences in station, such that Mizu's judgment of Akemi and actions in episode 5 are the result of prejudice rather than the result of Mizu's caution, I also want to establish that Mizu is just as caged as Akemi is, despite her technically having more freedom while living as a man.

Mizu can hide her mixed race identity some of the time, and she can hide her sex almost all of the time, but being able to operate outside of her society's strict rules for women does not mean she cannot see their plight.

It does not mean she doesn't hurt for them.

Back to Mizu and collateral damage, remember that sparrow?

While Mizu is breaking into Boss Hamata's manse, she gets startled by a bird and kills it on reflex. She then cradles it in her hands - much more tenderly than we've seen Mizu treat almost anything up to this point in the season:

She then puts it in its nest, with its unhatched eggs. Almost like she's trying to make the death look natural. Or like an accident.

You see where I'm going with this.

When Mizu kills Kinuyo, Mizu lingers in the moment, holding the body tenderly:

And btw a lot of stuff about this show hit me hard, but this remains the biggest gut punch of them all for me, Mizu holding that poor girl's body close, GOD

When Mizu arranges the "scene of the crime," Kinuyo's body is delicate, birdlike. And Mizu is so shaken afterward that she gets sloppy. She's horrified at this kill to the point that she can't bring herself to take another innocent life - the boy who rats her out.

MIZU'S ONE MOMENT OF SOFTNESS AND MERCY, COMING ON THE HEELS OF HER NEEDING TO KILL A GIRL TO SPARE HER THE WORST FATE THAT THIS RIGID SOCIETY HAS TO OFFER WOMEN, AND TO SPARE A BROTHEL FULL OF INNOCENT WOMEN WHO ARE THE CASTOFFS OF SOCIETY, NEARLY RESULTS IN ALL OF THEIR DEATHS

No wonder Mizu is as stoic and cold as she is.

And no wonder Mizu has no patience for Akemi whatsoever right before the terrible reveal and the fight breaks out:

Speaking of Akemi - guess who else is compared to a bird!

The plumage is more colorful, a bit flashier. But a bird is a bird.

And, uh

Yeah.

I like to think that Mizu killing the sparrow is not only foreshadowing for what she must do to Kinuyo, but is also a representation of the choice she makes on Akemi's behalf. She decides to cage the bird because she believes the bird is "better off." Better off caged than... dead.

But because Mizu doesn't know Akemi or her situation, she of course doesn't realize that the bird is fated to die if it is caged and sent back home.

Mizu is clearly not happy, or pleased, or satisfied by allowing Akemi to be dragged back to her father:

But softness and mercy haven't gotten Mizu anywhere good, recently.

There is so much tragedy layered into Mizu's character, and it includes the things she has to witness and the choices she makes - or believes she has to make - involving women, when she herself can skirt around a lot of what her society throws at women. Although, I do believe that it comes at the cost of a part of Mizu's soul.

After all, I'm gonna be haunted for the rest of this show by Mizu's very first prayer in episode 1:

"LET" her die. Because as Ringo points out, she doesn't "know how" to die.

Fanfiction: The Wedding Ring

I am an absolute sucker for second-chance romance and if you are too, then this is the Jily Fic for you. I read this in about two afternoons because it was just so good and I could not put it down. The quintessential Jily factors are there in which they both like each other but neither of them know it yet. This is also a fake-dating fic! Another one of the reasons why it’s so good. It’s a muggle AU where Lily asks James to be her fake date for her sister’s wedding and the story spirals from there. There’s jealous!James and jealous!Lily and a whole lot of pining. I just wish there were more interactions between Lily and the rest of the marauders.

Wolfstar Fic Recs Part 1:

Fanfiction: A Store of Happiness

As my very first Wolfstar centered fanfiction that I have read, I can, without a doubt, say that this piece of literature was absolutely amazing! This takes place over the summer before Harry’s fourth year and it’s an AU where he adjusts to living with Remus and Sirius as Sirius’s name was cleared after the arrest of Pete Pettigrew. This fic is very much heart-healing. I choose to believe that this story is canon. I believe it to be a quintessential fic of the Wolfstar fandom.

Rate: 9.7/10 I just wish it was a teeny tiny tad bit longer.

It is available on fanfiction (1st part) and on ao3 (2 parts). I think it is one of the best stories I have read including TLAT , Turning Tables etc. TLE is fully canon story

Me Reviewing Lily and James Fanfiction Part 23:

Fanfiction: Blind Dating

Author: mppmaraudergirl

Muggle AU that’s a quick read of only about 16,000 words. The story goes is that Sirius and Marlene set up James and Lily on a blind date, and in order to get back at their friends for their meddlesome behavior, the pair decides to fake-date for a while and then have a spectacularly messy break-up. Only instead of having their staged break-up, these two admit their feelings for one another and start dating for real. I really liked this fic, I thought it was a joy to read and it was toothrottingly fluffy, I only wish that it had more angst in the sense that I think that James and Lily should have done their messy break-up but then gotten together afterwards.

Thank you for asking me a question, I really appreciate it!! For me, Peeta is actually one of the most underrated characters in the whole series. I love all of his little one-liners that he uses to shock the media during his interviews. Who could forget the iconic lines of, "She came here with me," and "If it weren't for the baby"?

However, my all-time favorite Peeta moment is towards the end of Mockingjay (the movie) where Katniss is in District 12 after everything has happened and she sees Peeta gardening. He comes up to her, he gives her a flower, and he says they're primroses. I thought that was just the sweetest thing and the epitome of coming home.

My Hunger Games Fic Recs Part 4:

1. Two Birthdays (4496 words) by soafterr

A two-shot fanfiction of Katniss and Peeta growing back together post-mockingjay which centers around the idea of each other’s birthdays and their lives moving forward.

2. We Two, How Long We Were Fool’d (6695 words) by forthegenuine

Katniss and Peeta post-mockingjay, each dealing with their respective feelings towards each other and growing back together after their shared trauma. Note: There’s smut at the end!

3. Then Peeta Smiled (6210 words) by ice23hot

Detailing the journey of Katniss and Peeta throughout having children and their life after the rebellion. This fanfiction contains both cute fluffy scenes and sad scenes with angst. Katniss has to deal with her emotional trauma while still being there for her family. “Grandpa Haymitch” praticularly dotes on them.

4. The Victors’ Guide To Love and Marriage (11, 722 words) by SolasVioletta

This is literally just everlark smut, like that’s literally it, there’s some of Johanna’s humor and some angst and some fluff thrown in there but it’s literally just 98% smut, go wild!

5. Milk and Cookies (1,320 words) by PurpleGummiBear3

The essential and obligatory Peeta teaches Katniss how to bake fic, including Katniss waking up with Peeta’s shirt on and of course the Mellark family amusedly pretending that they don’t know about Everlark’s relationship. Shenanigans ensue.

Me Reviewing Lily and James Fanfiction Part 22:

Fanfiction: Heart Shaped Box

Author: FrustratedPoet1979

Okay this is the first AU that I’ve ever reviewed in terms of Jily Fanfictions but I absolutely loved it. In this story, its a Muggle AU in which Lily and James are both high school teachers competing for the same job promotion. They have an intense rivalry going on and because of that everybody knows that there is always some tension between Professor Evans and Professor Potter, everybody including the staff, the faculty, and the students know how much they “dislike” each other. What everybody doesn’t know is that Professor Potter and Professor Evans are secretly married and have a kid together! This fic has a little bit of everything, some fluff- some angst. It was an amazing read, I just wish that the author used Harry’s character more, I feel like there was definitely some untapped potential in the character interactions between Harry and his parents, especially in a school setting, but overall it was great!

Me Reviewing Lily and James Fanfiction Part 21:

Fanfiction:  The Bet

When I first started reading this, I was a bit apprehensive at the beginning because it takes place over the span of the month while most Jily fics I read usually go over the length of the whole school year. However, once I started to get into it, I immediately vibed with the story.

There’s this Hogwarts Newspaper in the fic, which I loved, I think it’s an absolutely adorable idea. And while I am sad to say that Sirius is not a quidditch player in this fic, James definitely thinks he should be so I can overlook that. This fanfiction has terrific insight to its characters and it explains their thoughts on why they do what they do. It also contains real-life wizarding issues and how teenagers, such as the Marauders, deal with them. There are two original characters here that I absolutely fell in love with, one of them is Bernie Bourgeois and the other is Erik Carmichael. At first, Erik Carmichael is a bit of a jerk, but if he was a real-life person, I would totally date him. Bernie Bourgeois is a character foil for James and I love how well Bernie was written. Another thing is that Peter also gets some proper representation here too.

In terms of James and Lily’s story, I did not like how James thought that he was entitled to Lily’s secrets just because he was her boyfriend. This is especially prevalent towards the end of the fanfiction though. While James had some good characterization throughout the story, I felt that the writing towards the last several chapters were rushed and it reflected really badly on James’s character. This fanfiction is a long one so while I felt that it dragged in certain parts, especially towards the end, it also had some good parts.

Rate: 7.3/10

Most memorable scene: James hosts an auction where the female student body bids on the male student body for a lunch date and all the proceeds of that cause go to funds for witches who have survived sexual assault.
