About this blog / UPDATE

So I decided, again, that in the end I think I will try to stop posting on this blog. There are many reasons, but I think the main one is just my bad impulse control. It's fun to mess around and interacte with intersting things and I appreciated the likes and stuff, but its just to easy for me to waste my time and mind on some weird social media spiral, refreshing likes and tags and shit lol. Ofcourse, I tried to "abstaine" before, be it a month, a week, a couple days, hours, minutes - but in the spirit of these manga that we all still love even if we shit on them, gotta try again, not give up, nomatter how much it takes. So yeah, thanks for all, and sorry if this sounds dramatic or worrying, it just is what it is. I will try to only log in to post new chapters, promo art, iceberg videos and etc on the other blog, leaving this as an archive (cause I hate when people delete their stuff lol) Also not sure about the screencap blog, will try to quee up something once a week but I will see how tempting it will be to just go back into full freak obssessive addict mode lol.

(like I hope that making it so official and dramatic will for once shame me to not go back on my commintments and promises, man I'm really starting to relate to Spirit lol)

Yeah those promo covers wre legendary and dont let anybody tell you otherwise

The Soul Eater manga has an awful start with the fan services, inconsistent art style, and a meh moon arc overall but the characters are the best part of the manga.. okay well not all I didn't care much about Noah and his lackeys but the book Eibon arc was fun so I don't hate it that much

also, the art did get better over time and the extra art plashes are cool to see (I wish they somehow added that Gorillaz/early 2000s art vibe in the show.)

Level 99 media literacy is understanding that Chichiro knew that her parents werent among the pigs at the end, not because some memorisation or trick or whatever, but because her charachter development from whinny brat into self confident hardworking brat made her realise her parents were never "pigs" (in the prejorative sense)

You must live on a strange planet. Your tags aren't funny at all. And Mifune doesn't appeal to girls as a "pretty boy to ship with other pretty boys." That's not why girls like Stein or Spirit either. I'm sending this because your generalization is extremely offensive.

As a girl I can't speak for why Mifune would appeal to boys. But I can speak for the girls.

The reason ALL of these characters appeal is due to their complexity as characters! I'm going to talk anime perspective first here because it's more brief.

Mifune: a warrior who has taken time to hone and perfect his craft. Didn't seem to have a purpose in life, just taking jobs where he could. Until Angela. Then he makes a 180-degree turn and shifts his entire life's focus to protecting her. He has a great compassion for children, for those who can't defend themselves. He'll fight not to kill most of the time, giving those second, third, fourth chances. We see it in his repeated compassion to Black Star, and also to Sid. But then the moral conundrum! He's chosen to protect the defenseless, but he doesn't mind if that means choosing to fight for the "evil" side. How does he truly feel about this? Is his morality truly that grey?

Stein: presented as a villain in his introduction so powerfully that you don't believe for sure he's on the side of good for practically the entire series. You keep waiting for the betrayal, the slip-up. Is he going to target a student or someone else for his dissection experiments? Is he going to go mad at random? Is he going to join Medusa willingly and fight for her "new order?" Or is he just the victim of madness? He claims to want to fight for "good" but then the madness takes him to the witch. We are never certain with Stein, right up until the very end! We can't be certain of him really until after Marie saves him from the madness. What a combination! The unknowns about what he's truly thinking, his inherent battle with "mental illness" (madness), and then the tension of what's going to happen to him in the end: will he fall entirely, or be saved? Which does he truly want?

Spirit: presented as a disloyal womanizer, a boozer, and...Death's weapon!? Already a conundrum. Are we supposed to hate this guy or think he's cool? From his very first appearance, just like Stein and Mifune, we are not given a box or stereotype to fit him into. Then we soon discover he was violated in his youth, experimented on, betrayed by his long-time partner in the anime all about trust with one's partner. We get to see him fight competently and powerfully, we get to see him make thoughtful and wise decisions. We get to see him having various breakdowns and various responses to the fear of losing the ability to be with his daughter. We see him lonely and desperate. And we see him at the bar, his only friends the girls who serve him drinks. And we see that he adores his daughter to the point of staying awake three days and nights just to send her "good vibes" for her test, and buying her a gift that he never bothers to check to see if she likes! Because he didn't buy it to build himself up in her eyes, but just as a gift of celebration. (Sad that backfired on him.)

All three of these characters have a complex morality that doesn't fit into any stereotype or any box. Stereotypes are presented for each of them in their own ways, but they break them at every turn.

It's neat how that aligns with the overall question of the show, regarding where moral power comes from and is there any true morality. Each character plays into the question fantastically simply by each of their natures.

And, this is true for the manga as well. Each character's story simply goes farther and ends differently, but these moral questions? Remain at the end. No conclusion is reached for any of them. Mifune doesn't get a chance to reach a conclusion, but he is true to his presentation until the very end; Stein blatantly states the morality will always be a question for him; and Spirit's life is flipped upside down, but he's still the same person.

So, no, as previously stated, your generalization that girls like these characters to ship them with other pretty boys is wrong and offensive. We like the characters because they are interesting characters!

Also, a boy doesn't have to fall into a "pretty" stereotype to be interesting OR to be shipped. Examples from other animation off the top of my head are Senshi from Delicious in Dungeon, Vox from Hazbin Hotel, and Greg from Steven Universe. Three characters with deeply interesting stories!! The stories! We don't like or ship them because they're pretty. It's the stories!

I can't even vote in your poll since your premise is so wrong.

I mean this is a good and interesting answer, yet still its hard to walk on eggshells and make jokes that everyone finds funny (especially when I joke about myself often so I hope it makes it clear that its tongue in cheek atleast partly)

Still I think its dishonest to imply that many anime fans dont just ship charachters cause they get off to it - Like when we look at what boys ship, its often the two hottest female charachters, like I found out that even in kids cartoons like Kim Possible instead of the basically confirmed relationship, people rather say "Oh the teenaged girl is hot and the henchman lady is hot so I like them together!"

Ofcourse some may genuinely say "No actually I dont care about that aspect, its-"

But to say that not a significant amount does is just in my oppinion ridicolous, and maybe its impolite to say but thats just my blog, if people dont like it, it is what it is🤷‍♂️

The Mifune meme made me realise "wait, people dont really talk about him that often, dont they?"

Think about it, isnt it strange? He appeals both to boys as the stoic badass samurai ("Omg he doesnt need a demon weapon, his soul is worth 99!") and to girls as a pretty boy to ship with the other pretty boys (as they do with Spirit and Stein, but maybe Im being too dismisive and thats cause those two have shared backstory)

But no matter how controversial it is to say that what I just implied, it's no question that Mifune had all the atributes to be made into a fanfavorite - "Oh he's so cool and serious but he also protects the innocent look how friendly he is with kids!" "Wow is he a bad guy or good guy??! What intrigue" "wow look how epic his battles with BS are!" and (manga spoilers) "Wow what a dignified death, how tragic and sad, yet how beautiful!"

The joke is, this might sound as if I was some fanboy crying about people not appreciating a charachter - but the thing is I dont really care about him myself lol.

Like on an "intelectuall" level I get that I should but somehow he was allways just ok, had cool scenes and is more likeable than not, but somehow he never really "connnected" or "resonated" with me (what zero demon weapons does to a mf?)

Interesstinf point, yeah I had heard and thought about the whole weird subtext of the weapns kinda being supposed to be subservient (even remember that in one moment while being a bitch Maka said something like "Your my weapon and I am the mesiter so shut up and listen!")

I think SE Not for all its many many many problems kinda went more into the direction with weapons being seen as suspicious till they learn to control their powers but even that is kinda ignored after the first pages or so lol.

But yeah its interesting to think that weapons are a creation of witches and just that alone could be seen as reason enough for "humans" to discriminate against them out of suspicion.

Maybe the whole subservient language is there as a consequence of Lord Death having to compromise with wider society to protect the weapons by saying "Look they are under literal control of a master (meister just means master in german) so its all groovy dont worry..."

But yeah I agree its something that could have been explored more, especially with Tsubakis bro becoming evil partly because he was insecure in his identity as a weapon do to lacking abilitys and his actions were kinda the reversal (a weapon taking over, weilding the master, not being weilded himself etc)

Also the mangas theme at the end with overcoming the hatred could have been stronger if the weapons were like a mediator - someone who were experimented by witches, rejected by society, yet found a way forward - the "no more death scythes" thing could be seen as a gesture of "Yeah you made us suffer but we are willing to forgive and move on, are you?" Instead of just all witches and humans forgetting a conflict do to one common enemy thats basically gone now.

But yeah enough of my rambling. Glad you shared your view, and dont worry about not being a native speaker - doesnt stop me from rambling without auto correct all day long😂

i'll take your ask as an opportunity to dwell on something i think most soul eater fans rarely (or never) think about: the mentality surrounding weapons in the world of soul rater. to me, it's obvious that there's a whole racial superiority thing going on. the fact that weapons are supposed to just give up their lives for their meisters without second thought?? it might look and sound very beautiful, with the whole "soul sacrificing his life countless times for maka" thing (that never sat right with me btw), but when you look deep into it, it's actually very sad.

now, i don't think this is a problem in itself, just the way ohkubo handled it. he presented a type of oppression and instead of making the characters (especially the weapon ones) actively fight against this oppression, he normalized it and made it look very romantic and emotional (again, the soul and maka situation).

if he wanted to keep this oppresion to give his world-building more depth, he could've at least added a resistance, weapons that fight against this mentality. it would open many doors for him to develop on the dynamics between weapons and meisters, create more internal conflicts between them, and so on. so much wasted potential, urgh..
