April 22, 1863 - Union Colonel Benjamin Grierson's cavalry troops cut telegraph wires near Macon, Mississippi. Col. Grierson was an unlikely cavalry officer, who feared horses. One had kicked him as a child at age 8, temporarily blinding him and scarring his face for life. In 1851, he became a music teacher and band leader in Jacksonville, Illinois. When he volunteered for service in 1861, they put him in the cavalry. He requested a transfer to infantry, but General Halleck refused because Grierson looked “wiry enough to make a good cavalryman.” His full beard disguised the scar the horse left on his face, but any other duty suited Grierson much better than riding. He loved music and had taught himself how to play seven instruments.

"In your hand, my fellow countrymen, and not in mine, is the momentous issue of civil war. The government will not assail you. You can have no conflict without being yourselves the aggressors. …Though passion may have strained, it must not break our bonds of affection. The mystic chords of memory, stretching from every battlefield and patriot grave, to every living heart and hearthstone, all over this broad land, will yet swell the chorus of the Union, when again touched, as surely they will be, by the better angels of our nature." Lincoln March 4, 1861

"In the 1950s, an estimated three million to four million Americans were infected with the measles virus each year, resulting in 400 to 500 deaths and 48,000 hospitalizations annually. But since the first #measles #vaccine was developed in 1963, case numbers fell dramatically…But now, in the first quarter of 2024, the number of measles cases recorded in the U.S. was significantly higher than in recent years, according to a new report from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC)." April 15, 1865, Washington had never known this type of horror. People shuddered. Rumors said the entire Cabinet had been wiped out, and Vice-president Johnson was dead. Grant had been murdered on the train. Men wept, cursed, and seized guns. The long roll beat in at the barracks, and startled troops turned out. Guards assumed posts at the homes of government officials. Rain soaked the waiting crowds. At 7:22 a.m. President #Lincoln died from the gunshot wound he suffered the night before.

This seems so perverse and unbelievable that I checked it out before reposting. The story appeared one day ago in multiple sources.

"The second song on Cowboy Carter [by Beyonce] is “Blackbiird” (the ‘ii’ stylization nods to the album being “Act II” of the trilogy), a cover of McCartney’s original. Though “Blackbird” may not be the first song to come to mind when one thinks of country music, Beyoncé’s cover alludes to the genre through harmonic flourishes that feature four Black contemporary country artists: Tanner Adell, Brittney Spencer, Tiera Kennedy and Reyna Roberts."
