“Don't look back and don't run. You must never run from anything immortal. It attracts their attention.”
- The Last Unicorn by Peter S. Beagle
@answeringmysister You won my latest Win A Commission contest, so here is yours! I chose the part where the unicorn has freed her fellow beasts and is walking away with Schmendrick because I like that quote and feel that you would probably like the blood and liberty of that scene :). She’s smacking his face with her tail so he doesn’t look back lol.
Answeringmysister was kind enough to ask for another picture from this book, which I partially adapted! Check out the first part of The Last Unicorn with my illustrations. They do not have alt text yet. I’ve been slowly reuploading some of my work that I accidentally deleted a while backs Adding alt text will be my next step once I recover my old work.

Win A Commission! Be the first to guess the book that was adapted by Don Bluth for a film, and win some art! This picture was supposed to be small on a page, and is not exactly representative of my skill.
First Day • Second Day
Tomorrow I will post the answer, so get sleuthing!
EDIT: Answeringmysister guessed it (Mrs. Friday and the Rats of Nimh), but please check again on 10 May for the next contest!

At the end of @iowriteswords’s book, Shards of Glass, Gerda takes a picture of all her Fairy friends as proof of her time spent there. I decided to draw it!
Left to right is The Newspaper Princess, Cecelia, The Prince, Kai* and Gerda.

I doubt I’ll ever have enough shells for this or have the painting skills I want for this, so I’m posting the idea in case someone who does have those gets inspired:
You have a canvas. It’s painted like a beach, with shells glued on. The shells can open up. Inside* are different worlds. Just tiny peak throughs to other worlds.
*this could be just the top of a shell that hinges open and you’ve painted on the canvas, or a clamshell with both sides still attached, and you’ve painted the inside.

Another portrait! I meant to post this earlier - now I just feel lucky that I remembered to take a picture earlier. A very cute dog decided to chew it.
Basically I just wanted to draw an old man, while observing in a classroom. I'm trying to learn to draw older and/ or fatter people. Unfortunately I was supposed to be paying attention, so I didn't have a lot of references. Still, I think he turned out well!
I don't quite remember what I was going for initially, but I've decided this guy is an Mexican-American mechanic. He has a screw in his ear because my Dad did that for a while.
And of course he has a nice bandana, both for me to practice drawing cloth and to hold his hair back.
Oh shit I just remembered who I was trying to draw. There's a dude who comes into tutoring (I'm a math tutor)
- he always has a face mask on. And also he's always having the worst day.
It's both frustrating and comical at this point. In any case, I was imagining him older and happier. I don't think he has a mustached and he isn't balding yet, but otherwise this could totally be him at like 60.
Tumblr media
Anyway the first picture was edited to imitate an old photo, the second picture is barely edited, and the following was a canine interpretation of how it should be presented.
Tumblr media
Here is the canine himself, he is my brother’s girlfriend’s dog (don’t worry I like them both.) His internet name shall be Hikaru
Tumblr media
He’s a year old. Funny puppy man. You can’t see it in that picture but you know those stains that coffee mugs leave on tables? Ring stains? He has light brown ones around his eyes.
All of this was pencil, except his eyelashes. I did those in pen.
@answeringmysister I feel like you would find this amusing :)

I tried to post this so many times lol. Have a portrait of what I think one of my peers will look like in 50 years. Just pen and pencil
I’ve never seen the lower half of this guys face because he always has a mask on and I admire that but I’m also curious.

I think if I had dark watercolors I would’ve just used those but I done. So gel pens, normal pens and markers (mostly sharpies) with a little digital editing to finish it up!
I initially wanted to make this in a different stylistic fashion but i haven’t slept so this is what came out ^_^
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Also here’s his original look, I made his hair longer (I figured he wouldn’t be able to grow it out for his prison picture sadly) but I think for his ears right. (The weird lighting is because the image was AI generated before it became public knowledge that AI art makers use stolen source material). I probably made my rendition have too long of a face, but all my drawings end up looking like me a little. Especially when I have to use my own face for a pose reference! I’m not posting that though.

I haven't seen any posts about this yet but l've seen some fan art that makes me feel this needs to be said:
Don't forget Leah Sava Jeffries has darker skin when making Annabeth Chase fan art!
Tumblr media
She is much closer to Lupita Nyong'o than Zoe Kravitz when it comes to shading, reflection, and complementary color usage :).
Lighting for dark skin is different on light skin. Light skin gets changed by lighting, and dark skin reflects the lighting. Below is a lovely shot of Nyong'o's character from Wakanda Forever in mourning. The filmmakers emphasize the umber qualities of her skin in contrast to the funereal white and (arguably harsh) light across her shoulder below.
Tumblr media
Try to pick spots that aren't directly in or near the light, and try mixing 3 or more! You can put it into a color mixer online, or even color pick, lower the opacity, and lay the shades over each other until you find one that fits. And of course, the more 'realistic' you want to go with shading and lighting, the more shades you're going to want to be able to explore vivaciously :D.
Let's take a look at the same 3 beautiful actresses I mentioned at the beginning, with a bad color picked area and a better-ish color picked area. (Please keep in mind, these are not perfect comparisons, as I was not able to find pictures of all 3 actresses under the same kind of lighting.)
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Kravitz's has a clear difference between the two, but they aren't too far apart, in comparison to Nyong’o’s and Jeffries’s. Note the dullness in the poorly picked shades as opposed to the better ones. Also keep in mind that while Kravitz has a rosy undertone (at least in that picture - it’s from The Batman, which has stylized coloring) Nyong’o has a slight cool undertone (I can’t pin down quite what, but the picture is definitely not stylized like Kravitz’s).
Jeffries runs more ochre or russet, but neither of those are pink. They are more red than terracotta or umber, but to call Jeffries’s face rosy would be wrong. Err more towards the golden when drawing her.
Tumblr media
^^saved an image from a writing tutorial long ago, but can’t seem to find it. If someone recognizes it, I’ll link it. EDIT: it’s from this post. Thanks @autumnrowancollector ! <3
And also, the darker skin gets, the less likely warm undertones are going to appear. Don't be afraid to use blue or purple or even green on occasion!
Additionally, cool lighting on dark skin is always a win imo.
Tumblr media
(I was going to use that picture of Jeffries as Annabeth by the lightning bolt, but then I realized the lighting on her face doesn’t quite match up with where it should hit from that angle, and I realized they kind of just turned everything bluer, so screenshot time!)
(Also if you want another really great live action example, check out anything Aldis Hodge is in, like Leverage and Black Adam)(and of course there’s Spiderverse <3 but I want to post pictures of Hodge)
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Now, to here’s a list of more experienced people’s advice:
Black facial features & hair
Shading digitally for a (somewhat) monotone Black character
Stylistic choices and places to start looking for inspiration (besides a search engine).
Coloring Black people’s lips
A better coloration tutorial
Also a nice tutorial for Indigenous skin tones, just in case yall want to draw Piper or use this information for other dark skinned characters :).
EDIT: Some actresses who are closer in skintone to use for Annabeth, provided by the lovely @blackfemmecharacterdependency ! If you can’t find a reference for Jeffries in a specific lighting, maybe check out these ladies’ pictures! It’s a reblog, so scroll down.
TLDR: Don’t make Annabeth pink and pale, make her dark and golden.

Part Four
I'm very proud of these dolls, and I'm also leaving them at my parents' house, so I did a little photoshoot with some books as background so I can have nice pictures of them. This set of pictures is exclusively dolls that I painted, so I’m very pleased to show them off.
This is the fourth and final post, so check out the first for more info!
Tumblr media
First up is Sisu, with The Last Unicorn by Peter S. Beagle. I swear that I did not rip the cover. I think that copy is like 50 years old, and I swear I had the ripped of part until recently. I’m very sad about losing it. But in any case, I feel like Sisu would relate heavily with being the only one of her species left for a long while, about how human vice affected her status as an endling, about spending time in a body that isn’t really hers to survive, and the whole quest really. Hell, in the book, Schmendrick and Molly end up together, and we all know that’s going to happen to Raya and Namari eventually lol.
Tumblr media
Second is Mirabel with In the Tike of the Butterflies, by Julia Alvarez. I feel like Mirabel would be the most invested in her family in keeping up with the outside, in magical world, as both a breather from all her family’s guilt and drama, and as a future head of the household later on. In her life. I also know that the Latin world paid a lot of attention to the struggle and loss of the Mirabal sisters (The Butterflies) and what with the book being told by Dede (the non-revolutionary sister, the only survivor) and being about a 4 sisters, Mirabel would empathize with this a lot. She’s one out of 3 sisters + a close girl cousin, and is the only one who’s not involved with what made her family famous. Encanto takes place in about the 1950s, maybe 60s, so Mirabel would definitely be interested in this book, because she would have definitely been interested in the real life events that occurred when she was young (the events of the book and the real life murders of the Mirabal sisters occurred form the 40s to 1960, but this book was published in the 90s)
Tumblr media
Third is Dolores with Pride and Prejudice, by Jane Austen. I feel like she is a more overlooked member of the Madrigals, and she probably is a BIG Romantic at heart, though I bet she keeps it secret. as such, I gave her one of the most Romantic books I have as a background.
Tumblr media
Fourth is Isabela with The Giver, by Lois Lowry. I think she would find the themes of huge responsibility and the focus on perfection by society to be quite pertinent to her lot in life at the beginning of Encanto.
Tumblr media
Fifth is Luisa with Jacob I have Loved, by Katherine Paterson. The title is a reference to the Bible saying, “Jacob I have loved, but Esau I have hated.”. I DID think about giving this one to Mirabel, but ultimately chose Luisa because I feel like Mirabel never felt she had a chance to live up to Isabela, while Luisa probably felt like she had a chance to under all that *pressure* (lol), like Sarah Louise (the Esau) with her twin sister Caroline (the Jacob). I think the themes of small town life (SL in the book moves from a small coastal island to a mountain town, and the Madrigals live in the mountains) would also speak to Luisa.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
I couldn’t decide for Shuri and also wanted to show her off more, so she gets two books! The first is my copy of the collected Infinity War comics, because she appears in it, and the second is The Deep by Rivers Solomon. Shuri gets The Deep because it’s about a mermaid whose people were the magically-transformed fetuses of pregnant African people who were thrown overboard while being transported to the Americas for enslavement. As Shuri’s movie is both about a strong African nation and about a people pushed underwater by colonialism and racism, I just felt that it was fitting. If you look in her hands, one has a heart shaped herb and the other has the bracelet from Namor.
Tumblr media
As a romantic and a girl obsessed with the surface, I believe Ariel would love The Princess Bride, full stop. I also think the framing premise would tickle her.
Tumblr media
Last but not least, Asha! Her movie ofc hints at her becoming the fairy godmother and crossing over with fairy/Disney tales, so I gave her The Sisters Grimm!
Part 1
Part 2
Part 3

Have Mercy On the Minotaur
A Parody of Elton John and Bernie Taupin’s song, Have Mercy on the Criminal by ME
The video is probably VERY visually distracting, but I’ve never figured out how to upload just straight audio to tumblr and I really only had energy for a one take wonder. I didn’t have the tune down pat, so I relied on the music app to guide me.
Anyway there’s a lot of sympathy for the Minotaur meta going around and I love it. Which lead me to think of Elton John’s song, and since I knew I wanted to sing it first here we are! Below the cut are the edited lyrics I used, with parentheses around the words I accidentally said.
[Verse 1]
Have you heard the groans at night
Somewhere down the hall?
Chasing some poor criminal
And I guess he’s out to kill
Oh, there must be shackles on his feet
And mother in his eyes
Stumbling through the devil-dark
With (a) broken heart in full cry
[Chorus]
Have mercy on the Minotaur
Who is hidden from the gods
Are you blind to the winds of change?
Don't you hear him any more?
Praying, "Gods, you gotta help me
I am never gonna sin again
Just take these chains from around my legs
Theseus, I'll be your friend"
[Verse 2]
Now have you ever seen the white teeth gleam
While you lie on a cold damp ground?
You're taking in the face of a bull head but
While his sad words holds you down
And he’s never seen a friend in years
Oh, it turns your heart to stone
You crack the walls and the boy runs free
And the grave's gonna be your home
[Chorus]
Have mercy on the Minotaur
Who is hidden(/running) from the gods
Are you blind to the winds of change?
Don't you hear him any more?
Praying, "Gods, you gotta help me
I am never gonna sin again
Just take these chains from around my legs
(Sweet) Theseus, I'll be your friend"
[Guitar Solo]
[Chorus that I didn’t do to keep the video file size down]
