I feel like a mistake a lot of newer writers make is not extending in story deception to the audience.
Anytime you have one character deceiving another, NEVER show the full hand until you need to reveal it to proceed. Yes, even the protagonist.
If the reader knows the full plan, it kinda sucks. If a character is being deceived or outwitted, then the reader should be kept in the dark as well. Keep your suspense alive.
And if the whole plan is laid out, then either have the plan go wrong, or have a final surprise element that ties to the rest revealed when it seems like it’s all going to shit
Doesn’t apply to all cases of course, like a character we follow lying doesn’t have to fool the audience as we may see that shit wasn’t true based on prior knowledge
If your protag notices they’re being followed, don’t follow their thoughts and actions as they hide, cut to the followers’s pov as they round a corner and can’t find them, then open their phone and say some shit like “lost em boss” then cut to the protag hiding nearby having heard the conversation.
Keep your suspense alive!

Really mad at the people who debunk the “plot hole” of why they didn’t fly the one ring into Mordor for their boring ass explanations when the canon fucks this hard
