when richie is 12 years old, he buys two ring pops from the candy store. he keeps one for himself, and gives the other to his best friend, eddie. but when he gives it to eddie, he slides the candy onto his friend’s ring finger and laughs as he announces, “that means we’re married now!” eddie blushes and quickly tells him, “you’re an idiot. the rings have to be real for people to get married, not made out of candy.” richie shrugs- he thinks he’d prefer a candy ring to a regular boring metal ring.

it becomes sort of a tradition for richie to ‘jokingly’ propose to eddie with a ring pop. when they’re 16, richie gets down on one knee and presents eddie with the candy, belting out a long speech of vows and asking eddie to marry him.

when they’re 18, richie asks eddie to prom with a ring pop- and eddie happily accepts.

when they’re 19, richie presents eddie with a ring pop as he nervously asks eddie out on a real date, and richie starts to say how he knows it’s supposed to be a real ring but he’s a little broke at the moment, but he doesn’t get the chance to finish before eddie is gently pressing his lips against richie’s, and richie can taste the artificial strawberry on eddie’s tongue.

when they’re 22, they’re at a college party and drunk and can barely walk straight- but they somehow make it to a 24-hour convenience store and richie buys 10 ring pops and proposes to his boyfriend in the middle of the store.

when they’re 27, on the night of their eight-year anniversary, they’re walking along their favourite beach and richie says that he has a surprise. eddie’s heart begins to beat rapidly when richie gets down on one knee, but it quickly subsides when he pulls out a ring pop. eddie smiles, telling richie that he’s gonna end up with tooth decay from the amount of ring pops he’s eaten throughout his life, until he realizes that the ring pop in richie’s hand… isn’t a ring pop. it’s a box, designed to look like the candy- and when richie opens up the box, inside is a real, shiny silver ring. and then eddie sees the tears forming in richie’s eyes and he realizes that this isn’t like all the times before- this is real.

richie can barely finish asking the question before eddie in tackling him against the sand, his arms tight around richie as he says yes over and over again, peppering richie’s face with kisses. richie slides the ring onto eddie’s finger, and richie finally feels like his heart is complete. “oh, i have one more thing for you,” he says, reaching into his pocket, and when he pulls his hand out…

it’s a ring pop.
