working on compiling an Iron man reading list right now! I asked twitter abt their fav Iron Man writers + I looked at all the major storylines!! I'll publish the list once I finish creating it, but then I'm going to start reviewing all the issues as I go through them :)

Reviewing: Iron man (1968) #267-268
he's so miserable aw
this panel is such a classic lol
Oh wow! I wasn't expecting a ret-con for the origin story. Although, it does make sense, the original issue is a touch racist.
Another ret-con is that the Mandarin is actually behind Wong-Chu, which is interesting.
this art is so good! I love the way it portrays the disorientation and helplessness of Tony in this situation.
Now, on to #268... I'm curious as to how he maintains his secret identity..??
awww my little guy :(
very cool art in this issue too!
Also Tony's line "Your thumbnail dictatorship" is so funny haha
This issue ends on a somber note... I kind of like it, it's apt for the tragedy that is Tony Stark's life.
Overall I give the re-telling of Iron man's origin story a 6/10.
They managed to clean up some of the more questionable aspects of Tales of suspense #39 while maintaining the integrity and heart of the story. Although I think that the secret-identity aspect was entirely too convenient. The sick and captive Tony managed to sneak off and disappear into thin air?
I also think it was particularly impactful that the origin story was splashed with some modern-day Iron man who is having an inverted dilemma.
What was once a blessing and saviour, is now a curse and burden. It feels like Tony continues to see-saw back and forth between those consistently haha

Review: Iron man (1968) #144
Solid story preempting the flashback. I love the anti-big oil and corporation vibes here.
Honestly, very solid first instinct. Rhodey is so ‘shoot first, ask questions later’.
Wouldn’t be an Iron man comic if Tony didn’t crawl his way to a power source at some point.
*record scratch* freeze frame. I meaaaaaaaaaan let’s get serious about this RhodeyTony agenda bc it’s clear Mr.’s Michelinie and Layton have been holding it down since the 70s.
Rhodey is so fun and sassy, how did the mcu do him so dirty 🫠
Love these two <3
Overall a 10/10 for me. Liked the close out on the previous story arc and absolutely loved the retelling of Rhodey + Tony’s first meeting. I love the dynamic there, they seemed to instantly be comfortable w each other which is cute.
It also makes me feel like the mcu (and related fandom) committed a crime with the characterization of this relationship? It’s literally the inverse of what they portray????
Hello??? Jim Rhodes is not a babysitter for a frivolous billionaire????

Review: Tales of suspense #45
Love his little rollerblades, but I can’t help but feel that he is horrible at having a secret identity
Happy!! & also only Tony Stark is going to see someone trying to save his life (and already 1/2 way there) and tell them to just stop 😭
Another issue, another panel to add to my ‘Tony Stark crawling to a wall outlet’ collection
Honestly.. this being their debut issue is HILARIOUS
Dr. Shapanka is a so-so villain for sure, but I love that they show that Tony’s an empathetic scientist first and foremost.
As much as I like the charm of older comics… the over-explaining and literal paragraphs is so exhausting
Like I said.. terrible w secret identities
The resolution was pretty simplistic, which is the case for most of these tales of suspense issues. I’m excited to get into Volume 1 of Iron man, because I think they’ll be more effort put into the stories and characters.
Although I do love that the reinforced message was that Happy is an idiot lol
Overall it was a 6/10 for me. It was a little wordy and boring and the highlight was the introduction of Pepper and Happy (although I think they interchanged Pepper and ‘Kitty’ a few times).
I did find it interesting that this whole comic sort of paralleled the mcu movie ‘Iron man 3’ in that Happy was injured and the villain was a scorned scientist who felt their work was stunted bc of Tony’s lack of intervention. Probably nothing, but interesting nonetheless
