L was expecting to be next, but instead he hears a sharp pained gasp behind him. He turns and find's Light clutching at his chest, looking absolutely dumbfounded and horrified and confused and-

He falls.

And L's the one to catch him; leaps from his chair to do it. He's the one who holds Light as his heart stops, as he's dying. Light's hands claw at and into L's shirt, desperately trying to hold on, to cling to something, anything, to prevent the inevitable.

His face and eyes are the most open and honest L has ever seen them, and the hurt in them, the fear, is real. L can see very clearly that this was not what Light had planned, that Light had not even anticipated this to be a possibility. He can see just how terrified Light Yagami is of dying, reduced, in the span of only a few seconds, from the world's most powerful and notorious killer to the young teenager, just barely an adult, he truly was.

And as that presence behind those eyes drifts away, that spark of life, that indescribable yet undeniable something inside us all, that light, dims to nothing, L does not feel like he dodged a bullet. He does not feel lucky to be alive. He does not feel grateful for it to have not been him.

This is not a victory. He does not consider this a win. Perhaps, technically, it is, perhaps, technically, he's succeeded in eliminating Kira. Perhaps, technically, this is a "good ending."

These things do not matter to L. It still feels like a loss. And a very personal one, though he's is never quite able to figure out why it feels like that.

This should be a triumph. So why does it feel like ash and glass in his throat whenever he thinks about it? Why does it feel like he somehow failed?
