I was talking a bit about this but I think part of the reason iterators are designed as these small little doll-like puppets is both to humanize and dehumanize them by the Ancients. The puppet, at is core, is a means for communication with a great biological machine- to give it a face and features and ground it as you ask its advice or it's progress. This massive, world-altering creation simplified down to this little thing that had all the features of a person. But its also small, cute, Ancient-like but clearly not an Ancient itself. They're colorful and simple, like a toy for children. And I think thats largely how Ancients saw them- often not as a person with desires and opinions but as an extension of the Ancient's work, a personalized character that represented their cities and people, whos citizens could like them and were comprehensible to their children, but was not them- and would not reap the reward of being them when a solution was found. Each one pretty and unique to make them individuals, but not seen- truly- as individuals by many- just as parts of their cities, something under the Ancients. Like if every town had its own personal My Little Pony they could ask advice on where the next community center should be built.

#theres this implication the ancients did not have particularly careful views on how they interacted with things not them #they shaped their world and its creatures freely #bent the environment to their whims so throughly it still exists #in ghosts long long long after they pass #i dont think it was like malicious but theres a certain lack of tact in it from an ecologist pov #and i sort of wonder how that colored their relationship with their iterators #given they are their creation- a sort of magnum opus #but a creation none the less #Like iterators are both revered as godlike figures personally made complete by the ancient's work #but as an almost novelty god. A cool toy. A neat trick. A new machine that will answer all your problems. everyones problems #Everyone gets one. each ones unique. but theres no need to be /too/ attached

okay i meant to make this post forever ago but my personal opinion on why so many people were so dissatisfied with lightfalll (disclaimer: i am not one of these people, i love lightfall SO much), is that lightfall was kind of subjected to a really aggressive marketing campaign.

like, stick with me here, i feel like almost all the lightfall release content (the trailers especially) were so focused on battling the witness, how this battle has been centuries in the making and this is the Second Collapse Finally Finding Us, only for there to be,,, no real resolution. the end was left on such a severe cliffhanger, but not only that, there was NO battle with the witness. the witness didn't even seem to be having a hard time at all with what we WERE throwing at it.

and for narrative reasons *i* am obsessed with this ending; in terms of storytelling i adore practically every creative decision that was made in lightfall, but i think the reason that so many people were so upset about it is because lightfall had such intense marketing and was rooted in the implication that this was the End of Days, only for us to get almost no closure, and instead so many more questions.

(there's also something to be said, i think, about the fact that the people who ARE most upset about this are like, the youtube gamer dudebros who's content is very very often rooted in the aggressive, violence-and-warfare, pvp-centric, no-interest-in-lore approach to destiny, and that the people i've seen primarily ENJOYING the narrative decisions (or at least being understanding about it) are the artists and writers and loremasters of the fandom, but i'm not quite sure,,, how to expand on that point.)

i think a lot of bad takes re: Aubrey's character arise from the common belief that she fully committed herself to making Basil's life hell for three years, when her in-game behavior really suggests that she just wanted to keep the photo album safe and get her old friends out of her life, and she didn't care if she had to hurt Basil in the process. and sure, that drove her to being mean and selfish at times, but it's still important to make that distinction and recognize that there's soooooo much going on in Aubrey's head besides just "hahaha I'm gonna be mean now"
