I think I cracked the reason I'm such a whore for Midnight Sun. Reading romances in the POV of the guy vs the girl is extraordinarily enticing to me. I don't think I would have thought this prior to MS, because I was just so used to the opposite. It seems like romances in the male pov are kind of rare, but oh my gawd they're so GOOD. Something about reading the thoughts of a man absolutely worshiping and lusting after a girl is so fucking delicious. Like it's so wholesome and sweet and romantic to hear Edward talk about how he thinks Bella has the beauty of a Nymph or whatever the fuck, because otherwise (and with the majority of romance books) we're only getting Bella's self deprecating POV and it makes Edward's fascination with her sort of puzzling. Idk, I just think it's really refreshing to read about a man who feels the same longing and romanticism that we girlies do. It makes my little heart flutter like hell. I love it.

the fact that shakespeare was a playwright is sometimes so funny to me. just the concept of the "greatest writer of the English language" being a random 450-year-old entertainer, a 16th cent pop cultural sensation (thanks in large part to puns & dirty jokes & verbiage & a long-running appeal to commoners). and his work was made to be watched not read, but in the classroom teachers just hand us his scripts and say "that's literature"

just...imagine it's 2450 A.D. and English Lit students are regularly going into 100k debt writing postdoc theses on The Simpsons screenplays. the original animation hasn't even been preserved, it's literally just scripts and the occasional SDH subtitles.txt. they've been republished more times than the Bible

Because sometimes when you read something great your head goes "fuck this is so much better than my stuff I should make that more like THIS instead!" Look at me. That's the devil talking and you should close the document NOW.

#you will make superficial edits that do not gell well with the rest of your work #and won't actually capture what you thought was so good about that story #close the doc. sit down. think about it for a while. inspiration is fine. getting a 'eureka' moment from another story is fine #but if you find yourself comparing your work one to one with someone else's and taking any differences to be flaws on your part then STOP #you will never write good stuff by trying to make it look less like you wrote it #writing #writing advice #guess who just had to go into her google doc history and undo a bunch of panic-induced edits #because she read a fic about the same characters she's writing for? #meeee. they aged badly within just a few hours of hindsight. learn from my mistakes #self-hatred is not a good motivation for creation #fic writing
