Five All Time Mod Recs

To start off this blog, we decided to submit ourselves to the mortifying ordeal of being known and show y’all our TMA top fic recs!

These are fics of very different premises and categories that stayed with us and soothed our souls. Feel free to ask for more recs (or more specific stuff) because we’re definitely not done. Enjoy!

Forty-some years after the apocalypse abruptly ends, the final acts of Jonathan Sims and Martin Blackwood come to light.

Mod note: This fic... goddamit this fic. I read it halfway through s5 and I genuinely think this is one of the best endings the show could have had. It hit all the points Jonny made and then some. This fic is pain, yes, but the best kind.

Jon isn’t really Martin Blackwood’s biggest fan. And he knows it’s a him problem, because it’s not like Blackwood is a terrible person or like he loses on purposes just to ruin Jon’s life, but he can’t help it. In his defense, if you were on a hot streak and the same person kept coming in and ruining it for you every single time, you'd harbor a bit of resentment towards them, too.

Mod note: I’m so obsessed with this AU that I broke my vow of not making fanart for TMA and made fanart of it. Yeah. Sue me. It’s the perfect levels of pining, ridiculousness and it brought me (an argentinian whose only baseball reference is the HSM musical number) tremendous joy. As the us-statians would say: home fucking run. ALSO, MARTIN BLACKWOOD IS LATINOOOOO.

Martin forgets slowly at first, and then all at once. One moment he's grasping at memories, desperate without knowing why to retain even a single image of an angry, scarred stranger saying incomprehensible things about eyes, and the next, nothing. He can't even remember what had him so anxious just now. A car alarm, probably, or a dog barking in the distance. He's always startled easily.

Mod note: I still quote it to myself from time to time. ‘’Martin, you ate the megalodon’’ makes me giggle and also terribly sad. This is an excellent way of exploring entities lore, as well as grief and hope.

Whatever he had predicted might happen, Jon wasn't expecting to survive upon demolishing the Panopticon. He certainly wasn't expecting to be rescued.

Instead, he wakes up in an alternative universe where he's never been the Archivist, and Martin Blackwood doesn't exist.

Martin Blackwood wakes up somewhere else entirely.

Mod note: I’m argentinian and the major element in this story is a Borgues book. OF COURSE IT’S HERE. This fic is an absolute ride and so so so beautiful - multiple universes and Jon and Martin doing the same thing over and over and over again, with hope of finding each other.

It’s Basira who catches onto it.

The collective shift that seems to come over them when heading in or out of the Institute. Not just the oppressive sensation of being observed, their every move catalogued for the voyeuristic cravings of some unseen Eye(s). That feeling remained with them even when they left the Institute these days, but it was always stronger inside its walls. That wasn’t the change. Nor was it the point.

The point was: making life worse for Jonathan Sims.

Mod note: Do you want to hit the Eye? Do you want all the Entities’s plans to be twarted by the power of found family? Do you want everyone who blamed Jon for everything in S4 to sit down and apologise? This is your fic.

Mod note: I am absolutely weak towards any fic that gives the Entities some form of sentience, no matter what canon said. Especially when these interactions are so surprisingly soft.

Jon remembers a statement he read years ago given by a Jesuit priest, who said that the shortest prayer he knew was, just, fuck it, as in fuck it; it's in God's hands. He takes Daisy's hand and trails on after her.

Mod note: Everytime I read this fic, I end up at least a little teary eyed. It’s not exactly happy, more bittersweet, considering, but I still love it.

Come Love This World (Come Hate It, Too) by cedarbranch. 3.3k words. Character Study, fluff and angst, spans s1-5. Canon Compliant.

Jon never liked poetry, until Martin.

Mod note: Yes I am picking fics that personally came for my heart one way or another, not much else to say, besides that “it feels like loving you” haunts me still to this day, in a good way.

Martin was thinking of a poem. It’s name sat on the tip of his tongue, aching to get out. It was a lovely one, too: something about how life felt easy now, at peace; how the small things felt like everything, a poem about… the importance of the little moments. These last few days had been like that, he thought. He couldn’t stop smiling to himself recently, and even Jon teased him about it sometimes, though he was hardly less giddy. He thought of the immense joy the little things brought him now, the mugs of tea they made for each other, how he would lay in their bed late at night staring at the ceiling, his love nestled against his chest, overflowing with so much contentment and fondness he did not know what to make of himself.

Mod note: Short and sweet, it was the first time I read that particular poem, and now it’s forever intertwined in my head with little scenes of jon and martin in the scottish safehouse before 160 happens.

Mod note: I would’ve liked to tag this more, but it would probably spoil the twist it has. Reading back on it, the narration reminds me of the statement from 196, which I find fitting and a funny coincidence, considering.

For faithfulness reasons, I’ll forgo rewatching in English even though I’m Jared 19 and never learned how to read

I will say the original English dub had a BANGER of a theme song and I do miss that

Sakura’s roller blades give me visceral memories of my barbie skates

Lmao is Yuki’s ability to throw a piece of candy at a child from a moving bicycle backwards foreshadowing his superhero abilities

Okay having checked this scene in both English versions and Japanese, my opinion no one asked for: the Aminax version is bad voices on all counts, Japanese has a better voice for Toya and original English dub has a better voice for Sakura and Yukito (who they called Julian lmao) I am not accepting constructive criticism

Tomoyo and Sakura sound so similar I could not even tell that Tomoyo was speaking omg

“There isn’t anything cuter or more interesting than you Sakura-chan” Tomoyo is really honest with her feelings I guess ten-year-olds be like that sometimes

I was expecting more secrecy but it is very funny to see Tomoyo try to convince her friend to be a superhero

I mean if I walked into my school and there was a mountain of haphazard desks waiting there I too would be threatened

Sakura is the only one in this group who has a reasonable understanding of what ten-year-olds should be allowed to do

LMAO @ Tomoyo’s team of bodyguards dropping her off to break into the school ONLY TO DRIVE AWAY

Tomoyo and Kero’s friendship is killing me the SHENANIGANS

I’m not sure I accept this light logic bc you need light to cast a shadow

I mean it’s nice that Sakura wants to save the penguin but why did it take that for her to get upset it was going to drown a whole adult woman

Say what you will about the ominous influence of the other card, I think Wood is being fairly polite since it’s contorting around her house instead of destroying it lmao

“I was planning to film ‘Sakura Dances in the Jungle’ in the park today” I love Tomoyo

Every little girl in this show sounds so similar lmao this is not good for my distracted watching style

Wow Ms Maki is really unloading on these two fourth grade girls

Since Tomoyo clearly interacts with even the more spirit-like Clow Cards I really have to wonder why no one else in this town is seeing these giant ghost monsters loom around the city

Well I guess this episode is a direct response to my previous comment

“I can’t stand scary stories” says the girl who spends her nights going into isolated areas and fighting magical ghosts

Seeing Sakura activate her Fly card really gives me overwhelming nostalgia for the days I wanted nothing more than to be a Cardcaptor I used to wave around a toy broom like that magic key ahhhhhhhh

In the absence of the first English voice and with the added gentle Japanese intonation for his speaking, I am constantly forgetting that Yukito’s character is a 16-year-old boy

Toya is really casually bomb-dropping the fact that he used to see ghosts and Yuki’s just like ‘dope are there ghosts around now’

Omg Kero’s sad face as he dropped the flower in Sakura’s lap 😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭

“I want to see if she wants to tell me something” like maybe ‘don’t run around town at night chasing ghosts ur 10!!!’

Yukito Tsukishiro: Chronic Aid-er and Abet-er of Pre-teen Mischief

Also if I’m right his name means something like “Ice White Moon?” Very heavy-handed foreshadowing lmao

“After we left, I went to the museum again and borrowed one” TOMOYO U CASED THE JOINT KJDHFKJHF

WHY IS EVERY ELEMENTARY SCHOOL KID IN THIS TOWN ABLE TO BREAK INTO THIS MUSEUM SO EASILY

Tomoyo is eerily well-prepared for this mission it’s like she has been planning to burgle a museum all her life

They really made an executive choice to have both a Yuuki and a Yuki that was a decision that someone made

Oh hey it’s the other pre-teen supehero!!! That guy!!

The more I think about it, the stranger the height difference between Sakura and her brother becomes bc compared to him she’s really like 2.5 feet tall they did not pick a proportion scale

U see this what I mean by gentle intonation, Syaoran somehow sounds older than Yuki simple by roughness of voice

YEAHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH TOYA U DEFEND UR SISTER

It’s not fair of Li to compare what is probably years of magical training from his family to ‘trial by fire for eight weeks with a plush toy who doesn’t explain anything important until critical moments’

I’m really not sure what’s happening with Rika and the teacher but I DON’T LIKE IT

“I just want to be with you as long as possible” [cut to floral pattern] Tomoyo is aiming to supersede Yuki as Gentle Shojo Protagonist Sakura Fixates On looool

It continues to be funny how Sakura and Li have 0% tension re: Clow Cards, 99% tension re: Yukito who is already in a committed Something or the Other with Sakura’s brother

There’s no rhyme or reason to these card types huh some are like “I will destroy an entire zoo for fun” and other ones are like “mood lighting :)”

Sakura really isn’t out here to teach us any lessons lol it’s really a ‘get others to do your homework if you can get away with it’ episode

Rounding out the triad of superpowered pre-teens with Meilin I suppose

“Syaoran is my fiance” I have had it up to HERE with this anime cousinfuckery I don’t CARE if it’s cool in Japan or Hong Kong or whatever STOP BEING WEIRD WITH YOUR COUSINS

Poor Syaoran he was doing so well with getting along with Sakura until Meilin got here

"It was done by a girl again?” Oh my god is Meilin beating up grown men in parks for street cred

“It seems our relationship chart has gotten rather complicated” Tomoyo probably means astrology chart but here’s my understanding so far:

Speaking of complex relationships I wonder how Meilin will react to Syaoran’s crush on Yuki

This rivalry between Sakura and Meilin could not be more one-sided

I really was wondering for a second if the card was going to split in half

I love the vibe of Sakura and Toya teaming up to help their creepy dad but even MORE SO I love that Yukito is In This Household

“The contents are already up here” This episode really doesn’t hit the same way now that cloud storage exists and also what were all those floppy disks for if not to save your work Mr. Kinomoto

I love that Tomoyo always pulls her weight in her superhero sidekick role like she is here to support and help whenever needed

Sakura using her powers to impress her crush with a ghost duet lmao these priorities

“Sakura’s Little Adventure” I see what u did there

Kero’s little shoulder pat with his paw to let Sakura know he’s there aw

Omg this Clow Card is so cute “Is it your fault I’m so small now?” [nods pleasantly]

It is very bold of Sakura to be doing magic so casually when her brother and Yuki are right downstairs

I like that this show recognizes the inherent intimacy of allowing someone to cut your hair

“Information about you has gotten around to the cards” well this is an ominous start to this funky tarot reading

Well the experience of seeing his little sister try to murder him has got to be traumatizing for Toya I hope he doesn’t remember this

UMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMM DID TOYA JUST FALL OFF OF A CLIFF

“Can you give me a break... and stop looking like Sakura” EXCUSE ME

I kind of appreciate the slow build of this show like it took them 25 episodes to introduce meaningful stakes

“But it might be tougher than the earth going ‘boom!’ Depending on who you are...” Well hello threatening figure in sunglasses standing outside Sakura’s house what’s up

“I’ll look the other way” Ms Mizuki is literally this meme:

I can only assume that if Toya knows Ms. Mizuki then she must be a ghost

Personally if Mizuki gives Syaoran the heebie jeebies I trust his instincts

“Um... do you like Yukito too?” Oh my goooood they’re sincerely discussing being Not Straight in middle school in this 90s anime that I watched when I was 7 I cannot believe

“And it’s been a year since you told me you loved me here” WHY DOES EVERYONE IN THIS FAMILY WANT TO DATE SOMEONE TOO OLD FOR THEM WHAT THE FUCK WERE YOU DOING DATING SOMEONE TOYA’S AGE MIZUKI

Also I have to rethink every thought I had about Toya being gay. I mean bi is great too but my thoughts..... racing...........

“Because the next time I see you, you’ll have someone else that you’ll be in love with” Yukito BF confirmed but oh my GOD this relationship chart IS complicated good lord

If there’s anything the episode “Sakura and Her Shrine of Memories” has taught me it’s that everyone in this show is bisexual and all teachers in their neighbourhood should be in jail

I understand that Meilin is a kid but poor Syaoran he is constantly being harassed

I love Yuki’s bottomless stomach lmao

Syaoran and Sakura have such a genuinely supportive relationship but it is very funny how they try simultaneously to get Yuki’s attention with the exact same words

“I’ve been thinking for a while that Mr. Terada is a lot like my dad” oh thank you Rika for someone finally being normal in this show

“Well it’s a harmless one” You see this is what I mean the dichotomy of Clow Cards is like... “I’m going trap you in a maze until you perish” or “I’m gonna give you a sugar rush :]”

I like that Sakura and Syaoran are starting to partner up as a duo on purpose like yessss I love a 1-2 finish and friendship development

Ahhh poor Syaoran he’s realizing that Yukito’s #1 in his life is the Kinomoto fam

We’re all familiar with the eternal struggle of whether using ur superpowers for school sports is cheating

AWWW SYAORAN USING HIS POWERS FOR MAGICAL PEP TALKS AFTER HE HELPED TURN REI’S PET FOX INTO A POKEMON CARD THAT’S MY BOOOOY

“I will stomp on him” it’s been 31 episodes let Sakura stomp on her brother

Oh my GOOOD does this Big card mean that Sakura WILL FINALLY STOMP ON TOYA LMAO

Ur telling me that no one else in this ENTIRE TOWN notices this altercation of a giant preteen vs a dragon

Why does the logic for how voices travel based on size apply for the Little card (when Toya was speaking) and not for the Big card (when Sakura is speaking)

Sgskdhgkhkgjh honestly body switching as a trope will never not be funny

Syaoran blushing and running away from Sakura oh how the turn tables

Every domestic scene that Yuki and Toya have adds ten years to my life we love some gay/bi teens about to be gay/bi adults

Ffskhhfkj I absolutely cannot relate to this Southern Hemisphere nonsense of finding ten degrees celsius arctic cold like BRO that is a normal spring day here

“We’re not frozen because we have magical powers” I know that cutaway was to confirm Mizuki’s magical powers again but this would’ve been a hilarious time to reveal that like Yamazaki the Compulsively Lying Classmate had powers

Awwww he likes her now that’s cute

“I got work that day” I will bet someone ten dollars that Toya is working at that quiz rally

I’ve been thinking this for a while but this show makes it seem like Japan has a much more fun approach to athletics than my school experiences

Why is TWDG Series important to you ?

(For the december contest by @stop-breaking-my-heart-telltale)

As far as I remember, I really started to follow TWDG when A New Frontier came out, back in 2016. It was my ‘Telltale period’, I used to love watching differents playthroughs by differents Lets Players, to see which was the good choices, the choices Lets Players made (*sigh* Pewds...Why did you have to hate Gabe?) and how much the relationships could change based on choices.

I don’t have the same attachment for Clementine as other does, since I never watched S1 and S2 until recently, so I didn’t have the nostalgia of seeing her ‘again’ like you certainly did. And when she made bad things (sorry to hurt you but Clem isn’t a saint sorry--) well, as much as I liked her I was critizicing of her acts, but I helped her anyway. I still liked Clem, I liked Javi, Gabe…(And I grew to love those dorks even more as time passed XD)

It convinced me to buy the game, and I don’t regret it (well, except the glitches and other optimizations problems…)

BUT definitely the installment that made me LOVE this series, and entering its fandom, is the Final Season. Like S3, I first watched it on Youtube, stressing with other thousands of viewers on the livestreams (DomTheBomb, for example, or ugh GuzzLive) about what was going to happen to Clem, AJ, and the other kids...AJ headshooting Marlon shocked me deeply (like when Mariana met the same fate in S3), I rarely felt it for others games, but TWDG made me feel those again (Marlon killing Brody) and again (Louis losing his tongue if you didn’t save him) and again (James backstabbed by Lily)…

Between S3 and S4, I became a big ‘shipper’, and when I saw Louis and Violet, I squeaked like a fangirl over them, and the fact that you could choose whoever Clem would romance. I always shipped Clem with Louis, but I don’t hate Violet, like, at all. If anything, I was more shocked by the ABSOLUTE MAJORITY of Lets Players picking Violet, just because their first impression of Louis, or even worse their impression of him after Marlon’s death (you know, his BEST FRIEND a stranger just headshot in cold blood ? People were seriously expecting Louis to take it well ?) was bad, they saw a clown, a not-so-funny coward, kicking out coldlessly Clem and AJ...

I don’t hate Violet, I like her as much as I like Louis, but for different reasons. She’s not a ‘people person’, she’s keeping her emotions for herself, having her ways to communicate them differently than the others kids. As a boy with ASD (Autism Spectrum Disorder) I recognised myself in her, I had a special attachment with her. And, in plus, I have a far-right family (by it, understand homophobiac, racist, antisemitic, islamophobic…) so having family issues, I’m used to it.

Both Violet and Louis are great romance options for Clem, in their own ways. I like them both.

But the biggest thing I accomplished this year, is joining the fandom, like, actively. I went on to only reading fanfics, watching streams, Lets Plays, to actually create characters (Geoffrey, Shaun, Esther...) headcanons, theories, ships out of nowhere (SophLou XD)...and writing my own drabbles, thanks to the community, to my online friends that encouraged me to write and post my drabbles (The last ‘story’ I posted until I published my drabbles was back in April, I had to cancel it down because of my baccalaureate…), when I didn’t have faith in myself. I loved the Final Season and I went to share my love for it here, on Tumblr, and on AO3...I probably wouldn’t have done it if I hadn’t played, watched The Final Season…

TWDG Series is important to me. As a fan, as a reader and as a newbie writer.

Really, really don't understand something. Hawley and Bruner are responsible for a majority of these problems correct? Announcing newer titles when there are older titles they have yet to get back to (TWAU2, BM3, GOT2, GOTG2). Hiring new employees up to last week when TG knew couldn't be paid. Bruner suing the company despite the situation he knew they were in. Why didn't they get TFS done earlier and we could have avoided all this? Want to hope we still get the season finished before TG is gone

I’m spilling all the tea I currently have, but not sure how reliable all of it is until Telltale decides to give us an official statement

I’ve heard a few things that I think could explain it:

Bruner (former CEO) according to this article (https://www.theverge.com/2018/3/20/17130056/telltale-games-developer-layoffs-toxic-video-game-industry) created a very toxic environment at Telltale. Creatively, his decision to greenlight a ton of other series and have them all be produced at the same time (basically quantity > quality) not only harmed the staff psychologically but hurt Telltale’s reputation. His role in all this is pretty straightforward and he is a massive dick. No other comment from me here.

Hawley only became CEO a year or so ago and has been trying to save Telltale by focusing on only 1 game at a time and trying to work out a deal with Netflix over Stranger Things. He’s also mentioned in the article above as more hands-off but again, we have devs who were working on TWDG s4/TWAU s2/Stranger Things say that they worked hella long hours, often overtime without any pay, and that the toxic work environment at Telltale continued even under Hawley but probably to a lesser extent than under Bruner.

From my understanding, I heard rumors about Telltale struggling to stay afloat throughout Spring 2018. Telltale hoped that their contract with Netflix for Stranger Things would carry them through the end of TWDG s4 and keep them afloat during TWAU s2. But I heard from a gaming journalist that Telltale recently missed an important deadline for their contract with Netflix that led Netflix to cancel their Stranger Things contract, which basically got rid of their major lifeline and prompted Hawley to abruptly close ship at Telltale on Friday and layoff over 90% of their workforce. And then there’s the huge fact that Telltale Games have not proven profitable AT ALL since TWDG s1. I saw someone posted a graph of the sales for all of their games since Sam & Max and the sales were literally rock bottom for GOTG, Minecraft s2, and TWDG s4. Not even the PR guy at Telltale seemed fully aware of just how dire the financial situation was at Telltale.

Honestly, I’m a little upset towards Hawley for even greenlighting TWDG s4 and TWAU s2 when Telltale was in such a dire financial situation and could only rely on its possible connection to Netflix as a lifeline. TWAU fans waited FOR YEARS for a season 2, had a brief glimpse of hope, and now that will for sure never happen. TWDG fans and devs are even worse in the sense that only half of the season will be completed (worst case scenario) and the other half is just unknown because writers can’t just legally release the scripts and assets for eps 3 and 4. Most importantly, I am pissed off at Bruner and at Hawley for how they treated their staff. To just sit down over 250 people one day and tell them that they’re all (except for 25 people) fired and have to find a way to survive in the most expensive metropolitan area in the country without a job and without health care is disgusting. The poor management at Telltale over the years has been leading up to all of this, but some recent event (which I hypothesize is the broken contract between Netflix and Telltale over Stranger Things) must have triggered the end of Telltale Games much sooner than Hawley and the other Telltale staff could have expected.

Reign’s threats toward Lena were meant to be creepy but mostly felt like a predictable villain monologue that I didn’t really care about. I also kept getting distracted by her too-perfect eyeshadow.

I cannot believe they wasted Chris Wood on tiresome, morally dubious “romance” for an entire year when he is clearly much more suited to comedy.

Family Ties

I’m kinda waiting on Alex’s season-long arc to play out before I comment upon it too much, BUT OH MY GOD, I HAVE NEVER FELT MORE ACCURATELY REPRESENTED BY A TELEVISION SHOW IN MY LIFE. Poor Alex is so worried about messing up that she’s overcompensating by trying too hard, and I absolutely love that she asked J’onn for advice and made all my Space Family dreams come true. The emotional connection between Ruby and M’yrnn was also really sweet and I love how they’ve been developing that dementia storyline so that it links up with all the other themes about family and faith.

The Cult

This continues to be the most meta storyline of all time, up to and including the fact that crybaby cult girl SHOT JAMES IN THE FUCKING FACE WITHOUT REMORSE, which — if the Twitter and Tumblr tags are anything to go by — accurately captures the attitude of many a fan at any Supergirl convention featuring Katie McGrath. See also: the cult switching its loyalties from Supergirl to Reign, hilariously reminiscent of the way a select portion of fandom decided to start shipping Reign with people before the character was even introduced because they got irrationally angry about actors making a tasteless joke.

In case it has escaped anyone’s notice, Olivia is also representative of the demographic of “fans most likely to harass actors and employees on this show,” aka she’s a baby-faced, early-20s white girl who is willing to do a whole lot of shitty and inappropriate things in the name of her “community,” out of the mistaken belief that she should hinge her identity and self-worth on attention from a bunch of strangers.

In a broader context, Olivia, Tanya, and the rest of Coville’s cult are used to explore the fine line between “fan” and “fanatic.” Why did all of them get involved here in the first place? They were troubled people looking for meaning.

Race & Ethnic Identity

There was a lot happening in this episode, and I love that it built smoothly upon things that happened throughout S2 and S3. Kara & James’s conflict was front and center, and boy have these two come a long way since S1 in terms of resolving their ideological disagreements. No silent treatment, no yelling, just two good friends respecting each other’s decisions while agreeing to disagree. (But, uh, James? Kara was not honest with you about her identity. Clark outed her to you before you even met her and then didn’t even give her a heads up.)

We also had a more subtle racial discourse playing out through the casting choices of the cult members. Note that Tanya was only kept around because she had a special skill the others wanted to use, and the vast majority of the other cult members were white. Also, the moment she was done translating the Kryptonian text, the guard dudes pulled knives on her and were totally ready to kill her. What a community, amirite?

In addition to that, there’s the ongoing issue of the cult and their appropriation of Kara’s religion, which they have now entirely ruined and turned into something destructive and awful. (How very meta.)

While I’ve already brought up the issue of Kara keeping her identity from people for their safety, I wasn’t wild about the explanation as it was presented here. It was definitely a simplification for the sake of time, and glossed over the fact that Kara had other, very good reasons not to say anything when she and Lena first became friends.

And then we have the meat of James’s storyline. Ah, America … where a white girl can shoot up a major news organization while her generic white boy accomplice fires a fucking bazooka down a public street and they get to walk away unquestioned, but the armored black dude who was clearly defending a bystander gets held at gunpoint by the cops, despite them having known for two years that Guardian exists. This was a nice pickup of the dilemma James felt last season re: his alter-ego and the way he’s perceived by the community at large, but from a very different angle that had much clearer stakes. And it’s a nice counterpoint to the discussions about vigilantism you see from any of the other CW shows, where the main hero is the same race as the majority of the public he’s protecting.

The end of the episode did a really great job of tying both James and Kara’s identity struggles together -- James’s narrative about feeling free to be recognized for what he does vs. what he is when he has a mask on is a direct counterpoint to Kara and her choice to maintain two identities.
