11. "I almost lost you" kiss

The empty car park had seemed like a good idea to skate in at the time. Skating after dark often attracted unwanted attention and as far as Kojiro and Kaoru knew, no one came to the car park after it had closed. However, luck was not on their side today. Kojiro’s board had barely touched the ground after landing another kickflip when a bright torch shone in their direction, followed by a loud “Hey!”.

Kaoru was already rolling his eyes as the security guard wielding the torch started jogging towards them. He could never understand why so-called “authority figures” got so worked up just by seeing a couple of teenagers skating and minding their own business. The only ones they were hurting were themselves— bailing was unavoidable and both of them sported an impressive amount of bruises and scrapes. Kojiro was worse off though, Kaoru would be quick to point out. While Kaoru focused more on precision and technique, Kojiro’s favourite technique was brute force, which naturally came with its own set of risks.

Looking slightly amused, Kojiro turned to look at Kaoru. “We should probably make a run for it.”

With a single nod of his head, Kaoru stepped on his board and started speeding towards the exit, with Kojiro trailing closely behind him.

“Oi!” The security guard called after them. “Stop right there!”

Neither of them had been taking the man very seriously, so when Kaoru glanced over his shoulder, he was surprised to see that the man had almost closed the distance between them. It was a nuisance more than anything; there wouldn’t be any real consequences if they did get caught. But Kaoru could do without the hassle.

“We need to split up,” Kaoru said. “Meet me at the drive in.”

“Okay.”

They split off in opposite directions and the security guard hesitated for a moment before deciding to follow after Kaoru.

“Seriously?” Kaoru muttered under his breath. “I doubt you’re getting paid enough for this.”

He picked up speed, turning off into a side street and eventually leaving the security guard far behind. Kaoru carried on skating through the empty streets until he made it to the old drive-in— his and Kojiro’s favourite spot.

Upon hearing his arrival, Kojiro turned around and flashed him a grin, shining brightly even in the darkness of the night.

“There you are, Kaoru!”

Kojiro bounded up to him and wound his arms around Kaoru’s waist, pulling him in for a kiss. Although Kaoru was used to Kojiro’s affectionate nature, it still caught him off-guard at times and he gasped softly against Kojiro’s lips, taken aback by the sudden intensity. As Kaoru’s lips parted, Kojiro deepened their kiss, slipping his tongue into Kaoru’s mouth and humming appreciatively.

When Kojiro finally pulled away, he was still sporting that thousand-watt smile of his and Kaoru felt entranced by it, unable to look away even if he wanted to.

“What was that for?” Kaoru asked, still panting softly as he caught his breath.

“I almost lost you.”

“We were apart for ten minutes, Kojiro.”

“Yeah, and what if that guy had caught you? You could be locked up in a cell right now.” Kojiro sighed dramatically. “I don’t think you could survive in prison. You’re too high maintenance.”

“Idiot,” Kaoru tutted, but he couldn’t help laughing at Kojiro’s ridiculousness.

“Only for you, Kaoru.”

Something breaks loose in Kojiro’s chest at the sight of Adam smashing his skate on Kaoru’s face. He breaks with reality and imagines a softer world where that obnoxious AI he typically hates because Kaoru lets it closer than him, relies on it more than him, beams with pride at it and then insults him, and so forth, Carla, chimes out in time, “Collision imminent. We’ll execute evasive maneuver in 0.05 seconds, Master,” and the board swerves while Kaoru crouches and rides to victory, while Adam falls flat on his face, carried by momentum, smacking his own nose on his board and spilling his own blood, coating his precious matador costume in road dust so he looks for all the world to see like the dirty competitor he is.

Kojiro rushes to the finish line and lifts Kaoru in his arms without a thought of repercussions, hoisting him above his head, creating a seat for the true God of S Lord Cherry Blossom out of his arms--only partially to enjoy feeling Kaoru’s toned ass-- and joyfully declaring, “You won!”

Adam limps his way over, touching fingers gingerly to his broken nose and then licking the blood off the tips absently like the freak he is, interrupting Kojiro and Kaoru, as the green haired, deliriously in love man shifts his hold and lowers his champion, arms now tight around Kaoru’s waist and pressing their bodies together, refusing to let him squirm away as Kojiro kisses away his protests and arguments against public displays of affection and being manhandled, not caring a bit he got a mouthful of black fabric before he remembered to push down Kaoru’s mask.

“Please, if you can’t get a room yourself, let me buy one for you and save the spectators,” Adam scoffs, haughty even in defeat, before admitting to Kaoru directly, “It was fun, being caught off guard like that, and I think I’d sign-up to be beat by you again, darling Cherry Blossom, if you think you could manage not to bore me, even if it meant delaying getting to skate with the brilliant Snow.”

It’s a little off, and they have a long way to go to sort things out, but it’s the beginning of something hopeful...or it would be if only it wasn’t just a dream in Kojiro’s head like an alternate life flashing before his eyes, and Kaoru wasn’t lying broken on the ground.

I’m sorry it took me so long. I saw this message, went to answer something on discord, got caught up in a few conversations, and then came back to tumblr with empty head and no notification to remind me.

  Okay, so though I’ve never seen Mr. and Mrs. Smith, we all know the basic concept of the married assassins who don’t know each other are “in the business” and who are then assigned to kill each other, right?

So that’s matchablossom

Kaoru is an expert marksman, all about the clean shot, the perfect shot, built from carefully calculating all factors. Not just the obvious like distance, angle, and wind where applicable, but assigning numerical values to things like his mental and emotional state and his feelings about the mark. You are supposed to be removed from everything going on in your outside life when on a job, and a mark is just supposed to be a name on an assignment briefing, but it’s naive to ever think you’ll fully succeed at either 100% of the time.

Kojiro is all about charming his target, identifying what a person wants or needs in the first moments of knowing them and adapting, assuming a new identity that makes him into that missing piece. He gets close and then he strikes, and his hits are always set up to look like an accident

Kaoru’s cover job could be the same as canon, calligrapher with regular out of town events, some real and some not. Kojiro needs excuses to go away a lot, so we either keep the skateboarding for him, but make it more of a competitive sports gig than a hobby (at least in what he says) or we give him a “sick out of town relative” he has to visit regularly.

Kaoru and Kojiro met while both were in Paris for a job that went sideways, causing them to need to lay low for awhile. You know the story. Whirlwind romance and quick marriage. 

Where does Ainosuke come in? He’s Kaoru’s partner/co-worker. He meets the clients, and actually arranges the contracts and assembles dossiers for Kaoru. He’s also the “eyes and ears” when Kaoru needs them, and acts as back-up when that’s needed. He and Kaoru have worked together for years. They’ve been together since before Kaoru met Kojiro. Both will disagree, not just with each other, but with themselves, changing the narrative whenever and however it suits them whether they were ever romantically involved or if they joked around a bit but just made/make a good (work) team. The truth lies somewhere in between. Being an assassin is a high stress job, you have to relieve tension somehow, and, if you have a partner, you have to (literally) trust them with your life.

Even though Ainosuke would deny the relationship much of the time, he was and continues to be heartbroken and betrayed at Kaoru coming back from a trip married.

But what about Lovematcha? Well, much like Mr. and Mrs. Smith (I did watch it, and memories are starting to trickle back), Kojiro and Kaoru are stuck in a rut in their daily, civilian lives and starting to fall out of love a bit (they think) and in swoops Ainosuke, magnetic and charming even when playing the role of average citizen. Tempting Kojiro into an affair is combination revenge for Kaoru taking up with Kojiro in the first place and sizing up what Kaoru left him for. At first at least. Really, Ainosuke should be more professional than to fall for any sort of mark.

So, we get the plot where Kaoru and Kojiro run into each other on a job, botch it, and then are sent after each other with bonus Ainosuke not knowing who to root for and sometimes helping, sometimes sabotaging Kaoru since he can 

Matchablossom call a ceasefire/reconcile and go on the run, and Ainosuke is pulled to “front lines” and sent after them both. 

It’s just a job, sweethearts….except it isn’t and we get a lovematchablossom ending somehow 

Give me 2 or more characters + an au and I’ll give some headcanons/plot or maybe write a small extract
