I just realized that Carlos never mentioned the word love onscreen until Season 3 Episode 8 whereas TK has talked about love (and loss) multiple times since Season 1. We all know Carlos love language is acts of service, but would love your take on why Carlos never mentioned the word love in the context of Tarlos’ relationship until Season 3. Even in 2x12 he had difficulty saying ‘I love you’ to TK even though that could be his final words to TK.
OOOH, nonny, this is one of my faves.
One, this is a TV show. Carlos uses the language that the writers afford him and even more dangerous, there's a whole raft of deleted scenes out there with who knows what on them from what episode. I think they waited of that means that the writers/directors/producers wanted to use his I Love You for severe emotional payoff and let's be like, entirely honest, 3x08 was a major payoff. And they could wait for the ILU to be a major pay off because we, the audience, never once doubted that Carlos was in love with TK. We all knew what Rafa owned to, Carlos picked TK out in 1x01 and was never going anywhere. He doesn't need to say it out loud the same way because we already knew.
Two, you hit on a key point. Carlos leads with touch, acts of service and gifts as his love language. Words of affirmation are IN THERE but they're not the lead. Considering the information we get from Carlos and who Carlos has shown us to be as a person, the words don't come easy to him when they're about feelings, and they don't seem to be something his parents use that often.
Let's take 2x04, which is one of my favorite scenes. In the middle of this argument around Carlos's parents and how Carlos introduced TK, when TK says "Someone who loves you who you supposedly loves back" suggests that Carlos has said the elusive L word to TK we just haven't seen it. But in this moment, Carlos flounders, because TK is doubting Carlos's love. And Carlos, as we know, is a constant and the fact that his nightmares of coming across his parents and it being weird and awkward and causing things to crack in his relationship is coming true before his very eyes is well, horrifying, and Carlos freezes here. If he'd said "I do love you" and TK had pressed, well, we wouldn't have gotten TK storming off to his parents and then coming back and Carlos's sad eyes asking if they'd broken up.
But what he reveals that he came out to his parents and they never talked about it. He says "I know they were surprised but they told me they loved me" and then never talked about it again. And I think there's a...such a mixed message in how Carlos read that moment (not how Andrea and Gabriel my beloveds meant it) which was that they told him they loved him and then proceded to ignore this huge part of himself that he'd struggled to tell them. The words weren't backed up with the action he was looking for.
We can go through most of his interactions with his family and while they're physically affectionate, they're not verbally affectionate. Usually Gabriel and Andrea are using words like proud, and Carlos is seeking out his father's approval in 2x08. Andrea uses the world love in reference to TK and Carlos, Carlos being the love of TK's life. When Carlos expresses his reasons for why he didn't tell his parents about the break up with Tk, again he's talking about them being disappointed and Andrea comes back with a line about how proud of Carlos she and Gabriel have always been.
Much like Carlos, Andrea and Gabriel lead with touch and acts of service as evidenced by Andrea showing up in the middle of an ice storm because her son called to tell her that the love of his life was in the ICU.
So, let's go back to 2x12. A lot of people thought it was strange that Carlos couldn't get the words "I love you" out in the middle of the fire. But, as I have long (since I joined the fandom in January) and famously (according to @maxbegone) insisted, Carlos Reyes wasn't gearing up to say anything as simple as "I love you" in that fire. Carlos Reyes was gearing up to say his wedding vows.
And now I have sweet Rafa backing me up by saying Carlos has wanted to marry TK on some level since that first moment when he watched him from across the bar and then approached him. Carlos thought they were both going to die that night. He knew back in 1x10 he was in love with TK but had NO idea what TK felt so went with "Big feelings, strong feelings, that I don't know what to do with."
So by 2x12, when Carlos thinks they're not going to live, he's not going to settle for a simple "I love you." He's working up to tell TK how much he's loved. He wasn't about to die without telling TK exactly how he felt, how much TK had been loved since the beginning and how much Carlos wanted a future with TK. If Carlos was going to die, he was going to go out swinging where TK is concerned. But, TK cuts him off with that delightfully firm shake and "Hey, I love you." because TK has no intention of dying in that fire. He still thinks they can get out.
Why save it for 3x08? Narratively, TK needed to hear it then. One might argue for the Ice Storm arc, but Carlos made it very clear with things like "Then why did he break my heart" and such that he was still madly in love with TK. What we needed in 3x04 was TK's grand gesture, which was literally pulling himself back from the brink of death to open his eyes, call Carlos baby and hold up his hand (again, medical accuracy, I don't know her) and it was beautiful. We see lovely acts of service from Carlos in 3x04 when he MOVES TK IN and that "Welcome home, TK" is infused with so much love...
But in 3x08, the person who has been TK's lifeline up until Carlos, is gone. The person who has loved him the best, the longest, the hardest through everything is dead. And 3x08 is the moment the Gwyn baton passes fully into Carlos. When Ronen's been talking in interviews about how Carlos is the only person besides Gwyn who has earned the right to call TK Tyler. When Rafa has pointed out in his (slightly misguided IMO TK thinks he's been stood up at the alter dream - Carlos disappointing people by not showing up to a party that he planned, chances are zero) plans for Carlos whump, Carlos is TK's lifeline.
And so with TK in the depths of how broken everything is, Carlos using those words specifically, a quiet "I love you" when TK is deep in the spiral, it's a connection that TK needs, has a HUGE emotional impact to the audience and is a call back to 2x12 when TK says "I love you" to Carlos while he's trapped in his own spiral.
It just works on so many levels!

Doing a rewatch of 911: Lone Star & I'm on episode 13 of Season 2. The scene where Tommy tries to convince the man to say goodbye to his son, in a coma, & to leave the hospital peacefully. It got me thinking. Owen was in that scene and next season, just a few episodes later, he would be faced with the reality of TK, his own son, dying.
Tumblr media
The scene this shot is from ⬆️ was, unfortunately, cut from 3x04. So, we have no idea what Owen did or said in this scene. The scene that I mentioned above, from 2x13, gave me an idea. What if the doctors told Owen to prepare for TK's passing (which they kind of did as we find out when he talks to Carlos & the rest of the 126) & that he should say his goodbyes. If any 911: LS fanfiction writers are looking for a prompt, here it is. What if Owen talked to TK while he was in a coma during the ice storm? He lets TK know that he's here, apologize for not being in Austin, etc...but also his goodbyes. If anyone writes this, PLEASE TAG ME!

thank you for the tags @carlos-in-glasses @lemonlyman-dotcom @bonheur-cafe @sznofthesticks and the friday tag from @paperstorm <33 here are some sentences from a 3x04 fic aka the next in my 100 ways series
Nancy hugs him, and he doesn’t understand. She rambles on, saying words he tries to focus on, but he doesn’t understand. A stranger, a mother of a patient, a young boy, in the hospital, comes over. She starts speaking, and he doesn’t understand, but she continues, she leaves, and his whole world comes tumbling down.
He almost wishes he didn’t understand again.
He stands outside the glass doors, staring through fingerprints and dust at the man he thought was the love of his life. And he is, Carlos guesses. TK is the love of his life, even if Carlos isn’t the love of his. But right now, only machines are keeping him alive. They beep, loud even through the glass doors, and Carlos understands as much as he doesn’t.
open tag and a few below the cut!

our love's a protective poison
Yet another cross post from ao3 that I have needed on this blog for months now. Can't believe it took me this long to move this one here! Anyways, hope you enjoy reading it as much as I did writing it <3
Gwyneth Morgan loves her son; that is an uncontested fact.
Tyler Kennedy Stand is his father’s son; that is also, an uncontested fact.
Gwyn loves her son, even though he has a tendency to act just like his father. Gwyn loves her son, even when he has a tendency to act just like his father.
Owen Strand had always been a pusher, always found a way to push things down.
When he and Gwyn were married, he would start the day with 50 push-ups. He would stretch the limits of their trash can, pushing down the grime until no more space could be filled. He pushed down trauma, suppressed it. Owen Strand is still a pusher, but for a moment Owen Strand beams more of a fighter.
He fought fires, he fought demons. He fought, and fought, and fought, and fought.
Eventually, he started fighting with her.
Gwyneth Morgan had always been a pusher; always found a way to push through things.
When her job announced a company wide lay-off, she pushed through the bad days until the days were good again. When she realized that she and Owen might not make it, she pushed until she couldn’t push anymore.
When she found TK, strung out and barely lucid in that drug-den; she pushed the confides of her love as far as she could. Then she pushed herself even more.
TK was a little bit different.
TK Strand had always been a runner, always found a way to run.
He played little league, at the request of himself, but maybe also Owen too.
Gwyn remembers the first time he hit a home-run. Owen and Gwyn watched him run around the bases. He slid into first, though he didn’t really need to. Gwyn knew it was going to be a nightmare getting those dirt stains out; but when TK smiled up at her, she decided that it was worth it.
TK was in winter choir; always vying for a solo. Gwyn would hear him practice his runs, day in and day out. Gwyn won’t deny that listening to him singing all day every day became a bit grating. But, when TK got the solo and saw her sitting there in the audience, video camera pulled up. Well, the smile he smiled was worth it. Even if it was a little dimmed due to the empty seat next to her.
TK was a runner. He ran, and ran, and ran, and ran.
Until eventually, he ran from her.
Maybe Gwyn should of seen it coming. With both her and Owen being pushers, maybe it makes sense that he was more of a runner. He saw what pushing did to the both of them, straining them, even if it was in the best way.
Maybe running had always made more sense.
One day, Owen calls her, tells her that TK is in a coma. Again.
He tells her that it’s going to be okay.
Gwyn laughs in disbelief, the sound jagged. “How can you be so sure?”
“He’s pushed through before, and he’ll push through again.” Owen answers, simply. “You know, he gets it from you.”
Gwyn considers it, maybe TK is a pusher after all.
Gwyn watches on as Jonah, TK and Owen display family is never just blood. She watches, knowing that there’s a special type of love she felt for each of them at some point in her life. Gwyn watches TK; his eyes mirroring his father’s.
Carlos is standing next to her; the silence they’re both sitting in comfortable but leaving Gwyn wanting more.
“He gets it from his dad, you know?” Gwyn mutters to Carlos, taking a sip of her lemonade. “Pushing things away before they push him away.”
“Gwyn,” Carlos feels like his breath has been robbed from him. “You have to know, I would never,”
“No,” Gwyn reaches out, places her warm hand against Carlos’ arm to steady him. “I know. I just need you to know. He loves you, no matter how much he might try to push you away, he loves you and he knows that he does.”
Carlos watches TK. “How can you be so sure?”
Gwyn smiles, “He is his father’s child.” Gwyn shrugs, “And maybe his mother’s too.”
Gwyn continues to watch TK and Owen, “I don’t know, I just think sometimes he has so much love inside, he thinks he needs to push it down. Don’t worry, you’ll always be the one he’ll want to run back to.”
Carlos knows Gwyn is telling him this for TK’s sake; but maybe she knows Carlos needs to hear it too. “Thank you, Gwyn.” “Anytime, just,” Gwyn takes another sip of her lemonade. “Call me if you ever need anything? Okay?”
Carlos hears the unspoken offer. “Okay.”
Carlos is sitting in the dark, watching over TK as his chest moves up and down. How do you comfort someone who’s mother has just died.
Carlos softly walks into the living room, continuing to sit in the dark. He has his phone in his hand. He doesn’t know what to do or what to say, or how to help. He doesn’t know what to do during a time like this.
He unlocks his phone and calls the only person he can think of.
Carlos listens to the phone ring on the other line; knowing no one will pick up. Eventually, he’s greeted by the voicemail.
“Gwyn,” He releases her name with a shaky breath. “You said I could call you if I ever need anything and right now I need you more than ever.” He listens to the whine of the phone call; the silence uncomfortable. “I don’t know what to do.”
He knows he’ll never get an answer back; but maybe just saying the words out loud is what he needed. He doesn’t know what to do but he doesn’t need to feel weighed down by the unsaid truth of it all anymore. He hangs up the call.
He gently paces around the living room before he finds himself staring at a photo. He looks at Owen, Gwyn, TK, Jonah and himself.
“No it’s fine.” Carlos had argued when Owen asked him to jump in. “It’s a family photo.”
“Exactly.” Gwyn agreed. “So get in here.”
Carlos picks up the photo and smiles to himself. He remembers what Gwyn once told him, about how TK can be overflowing with love because Gwyn was always overflowing with love. Love for Owen, love for Jonah, and love for TK.
Maybe the best thing Carlos can do, is to keep that love flowing.

something about carlos facing potentially-mortal danger at the hands of unstable women who think they know what love is, when he has the most unconditional, uncomplicated, destined love out there. something about carlos staying straight-faced and stoic and trying to use his police brain with both sadie and trudy but the moment tk is mentioned, all logic flies out the window. something about him subtly agreeing with sadie that what he and tk have is destiny; something about him realizing he might never get to talk about it again so he cracks his heart right open to trudy. something about carlos being drugged and injured and almost near-death and always reaching for tk and tk being his only concern. something about them being on the same wavelength and knowing when they’re in danger, and tk being the one to crash in and bring carlos back to him. something about only having so many moments and a love that’s inescapable and being so intertwined you share a heart and a life and everything else in between.
