I am stuck on the “breathe, breathe”. I’ve been stuck on it and I just cannot stop thinking about it. how can anyone? no, because listen. tk just woke up from a honest to god coma. he doesn’t know anything. he’s probably tremendously confused, scared and in his fair share of pain. and yet his eyes fixate on carlos in 0.2 seconds. and what does he do right after? he notices he is not breathing, so paralyzed by fear and self-doubt that nothing of him is moving and tk sees it, because he's so aware of him it’s more reflex than conscious thought. carlos doesn’t have to utter word for him to understand what he’s thinking, where his mind is going, and how to fix it and pull him back. they are so unbelievably seen by one another, so attuned to each other’s presence. they love each other so much, and tk knows it before he knows anything else. he just regained conciousness, merely a brush away from death, and -- and. his hand is for him to touch, to take. his head is his to kiss, if he only were to come closer. and his first words are for him, ready and willing and almost desperate in offering the reassurance he so fiercely needs. the world just came back into focus and carlos is already at the center of it.

Doing a rewatch of 911: Lone Star & I'm on episode 13 of Season 2. The scene where Tommy tries to convince the man to say goodbye to his son, in a coma, & to leave the hospital peacefully. It got me thinking. Owen was in that scene and next season, just a few episodes later, he would be faced with the reality of TK, his own son, dying.
Tumblr media
The scene this shot is from ⬆️ was, unfortunately, cut from 3x04. So, we have no idea what Owen did or said in this scene. The scene that I mentioned above, from 2x13, gave me an idea. What if the doctors told Owen to prepare for TK's passing (which they kind of did as we find out when he talks to Carlos & the rest of the 126) & that he should say his goodbyes. If any 911: LS fanfiction writers are looking for a prompt, here it is. What if Owen talked to TK while he was in a coma during the ice storm? He lets TK know that he's here, apologize for not being in Austin, etc...but also his goodbyes. If anyone writes this, PLEASE TAG ME!

You are my Home
The day after TK woke up from what the doctors thought would be his final rest, he receives visitors along with a whole lot of clarity of where everything went wrong three months ago, now it is time to find his way home.

I am a sane, successful, well educated adult who is currently crying bc Carlos Reyes said "If he loves me so much then why did he break my heart?" in the most gut wrenching, heart breaking, world shattering way.

Brian I have a nice ask day ask if you wish to answer it 💜 can you pick your top 5 Rafa on screen scenes and rank them? impossible question I know. but I believe in you!
Okay the thing is I did want to answer this immediately but it absolutely crippled me with doubt 😂 so I'm just gonna do it quick like ripping off a bandaid so that I can't overthink it anymore. Also not going to rank them because I'll spiral, so you're just getting 5 great ones:
The first interrogation room scene in 2x08 (but also all Carlos and Gabriel scenes this episode). The constant shifts in Carlos as he puts things together and realizes why Gabriel's there, the heartbreak of him thinking he was doing what his father always wanted, only to disappoint him again... at the time, this was the strongest scene LS had it its arsenal (WE STAN AND MISS TONYA KONG FOREVER AND ALWAYS) and it remains one of the best ones. It's so compelling and amazing to get to see the Carlos and Gabriel dynamic on display for the first time. This episode was a game-changer and I'll never shut up about it.
It's probably cheating to say all of his work in 4x18, so if I had to pick a scene from that I would say his talk with Owen where they toast Gabriel. My only problem with it is that it's so short, but Rafa packs every fucking thing he can in there, beat for beat, and it's beautiful. His delivery on "and forget about it?" but also all the lines leading up to that. The man is fucking hollow and crushed and lost and MY GOD RAFAEL. He's so skilled at what he does, knows exactly what he's doing every time. It's sublime.
Fine, another 4x18. Carlos's vows. I'm not gonna explain that one, the man is fucking beautiful and his heart is beautiful and he puts in on display publicly for what was probably the first time in his adult life, and it's stunning.
I love the scene in 3x13 where Carlos meets Cooper. Rafa is such a brilliant comedic actor, he uses every tool at his disposal, he understands his craft so well, how to use his body and face and voice to delivery great work, he's such a standout. I adore him. I could watch that scene for hours. Also, he is really fucking distracting in those clothes.
I'm gonna pick the fire in 2x12. And I'm gonna pick it because honestly the intensity of that scene, the life-or-death stakes, the absolute devastation and destruction of it, they are fully delivered by Rafa's performance. Like, Carlos's fear is what drives the scene, and Rafa's work sells it. And I'm also going to pick it because he's shirtless and so fucking hot. I'm gay, it's true. Have fully never recovered from it. And I'm also going to cheat and say the scene continues into him crying and TK holding him. So, like, obviously a top 5.
I'm sorry I have to include it I know I already picked 5 and I refuse to cut any of them but the 3x04 scene deserves to be in here and I'm mostly talking about the montage scene where TK wakes up and Carlos is forced out of the room and then his mom is there but then he fucking gasps the breath of a dying man who has been saved LIKE HE BASICALLY SAYS NO WORDS BUT MY FUCKING GOD, THE PERFORMANCE so I'm listing it and you can't fucking stop me Lola YOU CAN'T
anyway I just really love an actor who has honed their skills and studied their craft and dedicated themselves to approaching each scene in a fresh and honest way and I'm just really fucking happy to get to watch Rafa do it so thanks for letting me rave about him Lola you're a real one ❤️

We need to see that anger, because anger is not just ignorance or fear, it's the love that was there. That was completely denied. Because whether we want to accept it or not, the fact that Carlos put that boy's name down as he bought the loft, that was Carlos saying, ‘Will you marry me? I see myself with you.’ So, having TK just like [deny that] it broke Carlos' heart. So we need to see the anger.”

Fic Rec Friday
This week's theme: Rec a 'gateway' fic - a fic that you read and it was so good it lead you to read multiple works by the same writer. The rules: Tag a fic and explain why it was a gateway fic / what you liked about it. Then tag some people to see what everyone else is reading. Spread the love! I'll do the round-up on Sunday again, so if you're still recc-ing on Saturday, no pressure. Please tag @welcometololaland or #fic rec friday so that Lola can compile the masterlist!
tagged by @wandering-night19 , @reyesstrand and @carlos-in-glasses !!! Thanks to all of you!! 💕💕💕 It's A Date by @not-a-party-trick Gosh, I know I recced this before but the amount of times I've read it??? It's funny, it's sexy, it's angsty and hilarious, and just sosososo lovely!! Can't even count how many times I've read this one and then came the other LS fics... the style is so unique and amazing!!
Out of the Woods by @liminalmemories21 Whew, boy, this series 💖💖💖 I have all 3 of them downloaded, so whenever the mood strikes I just have to open my files and get right to it! Missing scenes type of fics always fascinated me and so it was such a nice surprise to see it in someone's bookmarks I think? And oh, did I have your profile open for a few weeks to get to your every other LS fics!!
The Ring-In by ifyoustay, @welcometololaland I still remember the hype I felt when I saw this fic's chapter 1 in the AO3 feed!! That someone actually started the wave of honeymoon fics!!! And oh, I'm so glad I did click on it! Definitely spent my Sundays waiting for the new chapter drop! 😂 and then immediately came the loveliest 3x04 coda and the rest is history! 💕💕

He definitely knows that this season premiere got the lowest ratings ever and makes me wonder how the rest of the season will go
(This answer isn't about Ronen. Bear with me.) You know, Tim isn't a fantastic show runner by any means, but it's amazing how one episode is...undoing our previous perceptions of him. Tim isn't supposed to be the show runner who develops shit off screen and expects the audience to follow along, yet here we are processing a secret marriage that was never even hinted at. Tim isn't supposed to be the show runner who lets plots drag out for longer than necessary (ie the lawsuit arc starting at the end of 3x04 and wrapping up in 3x06, which is much less time than the fandom would have you thinking based on how often it's discussed), yet the new LS season is starting with the secret marriage so that the Tarlos wedding can be (allegedly) delayed until sometime in 4B. These changes, wherever they came from, are (possibly) going to affect viewership going forward because LS fans - the fandom specifically - prided itself on "not being like OG". I just. I don't get it. (Has he maxed out his potential already?)

I saw someone commenting under LS account that they wish the carlos hurt scene would have happened during a disaster/rescue/first responding (instead of you know crime watch ish serial killer)
I know no point wishing for that now since it’s clear we are getting hurt carlos with serial killer but yeah hopefully we get one like this in the future? him being injured during a rescue would have been much more related to the show tone and more related to first responding that we see him being hurt on the job (instead of getting bonked on the head after not calling for back up 😭)
And I just miss the “first responders saving people” plot thing from lone star, I know we have a few silly incidents and we will eventually get it but so far season 4 just feels quite different to me, like the first responders-rescuing-people thing became a sub plot and the tone became crimes/investigations.
I love the beginning of season 3 because all the rescues/first responding/incidents feel so well tied into a disaster
So yeah I hope we do get back to the actual “tone” of the show soon (meanwhile I will enjoy whump carlos and the upcoming tarlos angst/reunion)
First off, ooof you braved the comment section on social media? you’ve got more guts than me. I could never.
Tumblr media
The rest of this I’m going to put under a cut cause it got LONG & it’s also kinda negative so sparing the timeline lol.
"like the first responders-rescuing-people thing became a sub plot and the tone became crimes/investigations." "I love the beginning of season 3 because all the rescues/first responding/incidents feel so well tied into a disaster"
^^ this part right here. just really highlights why I think I'm not loving the first few episodes this season.
To me it seems as though this season they were trying to replicate what they did in 3x01-3x04 in that they have a plot/theme running through all first four episodes in order to give a ~feature film~ feel to the start of the season. However, I think they did it much better in season three for a couple of reasons: #1 for the most part, the major plots involved in season three were rescue related and #2 it affected everyone.
Everyone was involved in the first four episodes of season 3 in some major way that all tied back to the same theme affecting the other characters. Even when some plots only carried over some of the four episodes (i.e. Paul getting trapped), their part in the story still felt cohesive with the other episodes. With this season, the first episode did a pretty decent job of at least showing everyone and then setting the stage for certain plots, but after that… the screen time/plots have not been balanced well at all IMO. Which, I will clarify: I don't think is necessarily bad to do for an episode or two. There's a cast of 10, so naturally there are going to be episodes that focus on Carlos, for instance, without Tommy being there and then the next episode will have Tommy as a major player and Carlos might not be in it much. I think that's fine and is even necessary to a degree with a cast this large… but to do that with FOUR episodes all in a row…. it just makes it harder to swallow the lack of screen time and actual plot for some other characters like Marjan, Paul, Mateo, Judd, Grace, etc. (if one of these stories wasn’t related to tarlos and TK & Carlos were getting the screen time of say Paul & Marjan for four episodes in a row like this, the fandom would be in an uproar right now, let be real)
Then when you add in that the two major plots happening parallel to each other now are BOTH unrelated to firehouse emergencies and instead related to crime/investigations (one by someone not qualified to do investigations and the other by someone who shouldn’t have been doing any investigating because they’re too close to it)… just really shifts the tone of the show. With only one story being that investigative angle, I could still hang with it for the most part and kind of ignore that bit. Which is why I was still firmly in a grin-and-bear it stage up until this last episode when both plots turned into this.
But anyway, I'll bring it all back around to the another point you made which is: "I know no point wishing for that now" ... cause, yeah, it's kinda just that? At this point, it is what it is. At least one of these plots is going to wrap up after this next episode and hopefully the balance of character time will even out as we continue on into the rest of the regular season. And I'm sure there are people who absolutely love what's happening right now, and this kind of show's target demographic outside of internet fandom is the type who typically would enjoy a regular crime procedural so maybe they'll gain new audience from that to carry into the rest of it.
I still love this dumbass firefighter show and if I have to skip an episode here or there, it's not going to kill my love of the show, and it's not the end of the world. 🤷‍♀️

I know the LS timeline is a very complicated matter but maybe you have some ideas of how much time has passed since the show started and especially since the end of S2.
We know that TK was 1 year sober in 2x08 so that would mean a year has passed between the beginning of 1x01 and 2x08. Then in the end of S2 Charles dies, and recently with the twins birthday party we have Tommy saying it is their first birthday without their dad. So Charles death is less than a year ago at that point.
How much time do you think passes between the end of S2 and the beginning of S3?
Now in 3x15 we have Charlie walking already. She must be walking pretty early since there's never been a birthday party or even the mention of a birthday so it's safe to assume she's not one year old yet. Which may put her at around 10-11 months old i suppose, which would be the amount of time that has passed since 3x04 when she was born. But that just seems completely incorrect if Charles has also been dead for less than a year according to the fact that its the twins first birthday without him.
Any ideas of what the timeline SHOULD be like if it wasn't so jumbled? Lol
You know, Nonny, I have been saving your ask for awhile, because I really wanted to do this ask justice, with like thought, and care, and a long meta, and then on Monday, Tommy sits in front of Charles's grave and the date of his passing is April 27, 2021 and she tells him it's been a YEAR.
And I...nonny...I know they went from like May to January in the first minutes of 3x01, so I take that to be the general timespan between Owen punching Billy and where we wake up... maybe a week tops from the opening scene of 3x01.
BUT THIS MONDAY NIGHT NONSENSE...you mean to tell me it's only been FOUR MONTHS since the ICE STORM.
No, nope sorry. No I don't buy it.
Charlie Ryder is holding her head up, has teeth and is walking. WALKING. That takes 10 months to a year to start first steps...and that's on the early side.
Beyond that, the idea that TK went from falling into the ice to his mom dying to having Sadie attack him in a span of four months...I...HOW DOES HE FUNCTION AS A HUMAN BEING? HOW... HES A GODDAMN MIRACLE
If we were being sensable people it's been a year since the ice storm... and it's January again. But the episode is titled Spring Cleaning...so...
Time doesn't actually exist in Lone Star verse. It's like being the Doctor, okay, or living in Schitt's Creek where it's always summer unless it's Christmas. Some show runners and writers rooms cannot math and it really fucking shows.
The timeline is whatever y'all want it to be. I will never read a fic in this fandom (or Schitt's Creek, or Doctor Who) and think "that timeline doesn't make sense" because I promise you every fic writer in this fandom as put more thought into the timeline than the writers room ever has. Which is not me shitting on the writer's room, it's just acknowledging that not everybody carefully marks out time like we obsessive people do.
