Broncos Regular Season Week 2

Hawk Valley

Quick Review

The Broncos lost to the Titans 16-14 Monday night with only family and friends in attendance, about 500 folks. While the game was in doubt, the Bronco’s game ball belonged to the Titan’s field goal kicker. He missed two field goals, an extra point and had one field goal blocked.

A longer review

The game looked like a preseason game, but the Broncos offense preformed just like last year. They scored first and then snoozed for most of the game. At the end of the first quarter, the score was 7-0 and it looked like Noah Fant was going to have a great game. The Broncos scoring drive was helped by a Titans player throwing a punch and then being ejected from the game. The Bronco offense attacked his replacement and moved down the field.

The game started to fall apart for the Broncos in the second quarter. Bronco running back Melvin Gordon fumbled. The Bronco’s defense rallied for a bit, but an offsides call gave the Titans a first down, which was quickly followed by a Titan’s touchdown with 9:21 left in the quarter. During this time ESPN ran a graphic that was odd, confusing and out of place. I guess the person was supposed to be John Elway but the announcers thought that it was Arnold Schwarzenegger. Back on offense, Lock fumbled, but was he was lucky and recovered the ball. The offense then marched into the red zone, all the way down to the one yard line. The offense stalled and they were unable to capitalize on fourth down. The Titans took over and marched down the field. Their drive was aided by an incomplete pass call that was reversed upon review with 53 seconds left. The Broncos defense sacked their quarterback with 16 seconds left. The Tiatans then kicked a field goal but missed with 8 seconds left.

The Broncos got the ball to start the third quarter but this drive only lasted 49 seconds. The Broncos defense responded and picked off the Titan’s quarterback with 12 minutes left in the quarter. A personal foul by the Broncos defense negated the interception. With 7:28 left in the quarter, the Titans missed another field goal. The next Broncos drive lasted only 82 seconds. The next Titan drive was aided by another penalty on the Broncos defense. A Bronco defender ripped the helmet off a Titan's player giving the Titans another first down.

With 13:49 left in the fourth the Titans scored their final touchdown of the game, but their kicker missed the extra point. Melvin Gordon scored on the next Bronco drive with 9:08 remaining in the game. At this point in the game, the game turns into a punting party, which lasted until the final two minutes. The Titans were driving again and had just earned a first down, but the Broncos challenged the spot of the ball with 1:54 left. The Broncos win the challenge and get four seconds added back to the game clock, but the Titans still had a first down to play with. The defense then commits pass interference, moving the ball to about the 35. The Titans run the clock down till there are 20 seconds left in the game. On fourth and one, with 17 seconds left on the clock, the Titans kicker finally makes a field goal. The Broncos get the ball back, but their hail marry pass falls incomplete and the game ends.

During the week

All week long the press complained about time management, as if that would have made a difference in the game. They got the coach to admit he’s always thinking about the defense. The coach also struck back at those people saying he’s on the hot seat after one game. They have only played one game, but this year’s offense is below last year’s average of 17 ppg. If you have the coach on the hot seat, you’re not wrong.
