If you can only read 1 non-fiction and 1 fiction book for the rest of your life, what would it be? Why do you pick these books?
Do you have book or author recs to read?
Thank you :)
@curiousnonny
OOOHHH this is HARD. As usual, but I'll give it a shot.
So, for the non fiction book: probabbly one of my Bonsai books. Bonsai is a secret love of mine that I do not share on this blog (go to @growingstoriesandgardens if you want the very occasonal mention from me about that stuff, as well as some orignal writing). But there are some really amazing informatonal, non-fiction books around bonsai that go into tree biology, bonsai desigin and even ceramics. That would give me a lot of different things in one book, plus I love all of it. So yea, non fiction I would pick a bonsai book!
For the FICTION book...I feel like that would be so tricky. But off the top of my head? A childrens book called Poppy and Rye. It was one of the book I grew up on as a child but only appresiated till I was MUCH older and still have a soft stop for it. It has a lot of the themes, tropes and generally the kind of story I like. I think I could settle for reading that again and again, despite it being a childrens book.

Regarding your post about solar eclipses on other planets - I know other planets get solar eclipses, too, but do any other planets besides earth get total solar eclipses?
Yep! I mean, that's why I worded that post specifically that way, and included links to the wikipedia articles about solar eclipses on the gas giant planets in our solar system.
So, a total solar eclipse happens on earth because the angular size of the moon as seen from the surface of the earth is (usually) larger than the angular size of the sun, right? (We see an annular eclipse when the moon's angular size is a little smaller than the sun's, depending on the relative distances of each since orbits are elliptical and those aren't constant.)
Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus and Neptune are all quite a bit farther from the sun, so the angular size of the sun is much smaller, and have fairly large moons. All of Jupiter's galilean moons are large enough and close enough to the planet that they're large enough to fully occult (cover) the sun and therefore produce total eclipses.
Similarly on Saturn:
Seven of Saturn's satellites – Janus, Mimas, Enceladus, Tethys, Rhea, Dione and Titan – are large enough and near enough to eclipse or occult the Sun, or in other words to cast an umbra on Saturn. At this distance, the sun covers only about 3 arcminutes in the sky of Saturn. In comparison, the seven major moons of Saturn have angular diameters of 5–10' (Mimas), 5–9' (Enceladus), 10–15' (Tethys), 10–12' (Dione), 8–11' (Rhea), 14–15' (Titan), and 1–2' (Iapetus). Iapetus is Saturn's third largest moon, but is too far away to completely eclipse the Sun. Janus, a very close moon to Saturn, has an angular diameter of about 7', meaning that it can fully cover the Sun.
and Uranus:
Twelve satellites of Uranus—Cressida, Desdemona, Juliet, Portia, Rosalind, Belinda, Puck, Miranda, Ariel, Umbriel, Titania and Oberon—are large enough and near enough to eclipse the Sun.
and Neptune:
All of Neptune's inner moons and Triton can eclipse the Sun as seen from Neptune. All other satellites of Neptune are too small and/or too distant to produce an umbra. From this distance, the Sun's angular diameter is reduced to one and a quarter arcminutes across. Here are the angular diameters of the moons that are large enough to fully eclipse the Sun: Naiad, 7–13'; Thalassa, 8–14'; Despina, 14–22'; Galatea, 13–18'; Larissa, 10–14'; Proteus, 13–16'; Triton, 26–28'.
and also Pluto, really:
Charon has an angular diameter of 4 degrees of arc as seen from the surface of Pluto; the Sun appears much smaller, only 39 to 65 arcseconds. By comparison, the Moon as viewed from Earth has an angular diameter of only 31 minutes of arc, or just over half a degree of arc. Therefore, Charon would appear to have eight times the diameter, or 25 times the area of the Moon; this is due to Charon's proximity to Pluto rather than size, as despite having just over one-third of a Lunar radius, Earth's Moon is 20 times more distant from Earth's surface as Charon is from Pluto's. This proximity further ensures that a large proportion of Pluto's surface can experience an eclipse. Because Pluto always presents the same face towards Charon due to tidal locking, only the Charon-facing hemisphere experiences solar eclipses by Charon.
So all of these planets (modulo the lack of surfaces/living beings, but like, that's also pretty special to Earth completely separately from eclipses) experience the nighttime-like darkness caused by the umbra (shadow) of the eclipse (occultation).
Now, as a few people have pointed out in the notes, the ring of fire deal IS pretty special, which happens because the angular size of the moon and sun are often SO similar. (Maybe Iapetus is similar enough with the solar angular size sometimes depending where Saturn is in its orbit, but at a few arcminutes instead of half a degree you can imagine the effect being somewhat less amazing. Then again, I bet solar occultations by Saturn's rings are pretty amazing, so I'm not going to hold that against the planet.)
In no way do I think this makes total solar eclipses less awesome, or think that the excitement is misplaced. It's a pretty amazing special event! It's also one that won't even exist for the earth forever, since the moon moves a few centimeters away from us each year. But as an astronomer I think it's cool that there are eclipses (and occultations and transits of the sun by moons with smaller angular sizes!) on other planets too! Though, the post I made was mostly a kneejerk eyeroll complaint about a silly factual error that might just be because the OP of the post I was annoyed by was thinking about some other facet of our solar eclipses as being unique than how it was worded. Since we can't go to any other planet to watch eclipses (that would add a whole extra layer to astrotourism), our eclipses on earth are pretty special. If you ever have the opportunity to see one, I wholly recommend going! It's really amazing.
In conclusion: here's an Io solar eclipse on Jupiter taken by the Hubble Space telescope:
Tumblr media
[Image in black and white shows Jupiter's volcanic moon Io passing above the turbulent clouds of the giant planet, on July 24, 1996. There's a large black spot on Jupiter which is Io's shadow. The smallest details visible on Io and Jupiter are about 100 miles across (about 160 kilometres). Bright patches visible on Io are regions of sulfur dioxide frost. Io is roughly the size of Earth's moon, but 2000 times farther away.]
And here's the April 8th eclipse of the sun by the moon on Earth as seen by the GOES satellite:
Tumblr media
[A gif of the earth showing the GOES EAST view of North and South America on April 8th over the course of the total solar eclipse. A shadow of the moon passes from the left to the upper right side of the view of the earth.]

Was AJ justified or not?
not justified. understandable, but not justified
the situation was a bad one. marlon Was trying to kill clem. aj was ready to do whatever he needed to to protect her. but hes a young child. either through fighting or talking marlon will stand down. the threat has been dealt with but aj doesnt realize that. marlon drops the gun and aj takes it because he still feels threatened and is ready to do what he thinks he has to to protect clem (whos life WAS on the line twice that night). he doesnt know the difference because hes never been taught the difference. all he knows is danger and survival. hes unsocialized and doesnt know what its like to be a part of a larger group. he was already biting and hitting anyone who would come up behind him reflexively because hes a traumatized little kid who doesnt know anything besides protecting himself first and asking questions later
he messed up. he thought he was helping. he wanted to protect clem. he was scared. it was a horrible mistake, but its not like marlon was completely innocent. marlon Was a threat, he just wasnt anymore when aj finally got his gun back. aj just couldnt recognize that because hes 5 years old and doesnt know any better. louis yells at clem asking her what the hell she taught him, but its more about what he Wasnt taught. he only knows survival and to eliminate threats. no room for nuance because its just been him and clem and a fight for survival for years. ericson is the kind of environment aj desperately needs, where he can be Safe, where survival isnt the only thing he needs to focus on. he needs socialization and support and patience, otherwise he will only get worse. clem knows this. its partially why shes so desperate to find a home for them. she sees what the world is doing to this little boy and so desperately does not want that for him, even if it keeps him safe
i do not like a justified aj. for me teaching him to be repentant and to know the difference between a threat like marlon and a threat like lilly is important. marlon wasnt a monster, he was a scared kid just like aj is, and they both make mistakes that cost people their lives. but lilly IS a monster, in the sense that she is a legitimate threat that cannot be reasoned with. so teaching aj that him killing marlon was wrong, but still telling him to shoot lilly, i have confidence in him that he Can tell the difference, it just needs reinforcing in the cave for him to Get It. to steer him away from that anger. hes learning when to make the hard calls. and because of that i believed him when he gave his little speech in the cave. i Did trust him. but seeing other routes and other cave speeches i can def understand why some people didnt trust him. raising aj into a person you can trust feels like the whole point to me. people will teach aj that he was justified and then hate him for his actions like YOU TAUGHT HIM THAT

1) what's been your favorite breakaway challenge gimmick from past all stars? 2) what's the best snack you ever had at a ballpark? and/or at a hockey rink? 3) what do you think nick cicek's goal song should be if the cuda ever supported fun and enjoyment at hockey games?
oh these are juicy! sorry to nick cicek for how much i'm about roast him
i don't think i ever really recovered from maggie and becs showing me the jakub voráček breakaway challenge feat. johnny hockey in the middle of the pandemic. like. what do i even do with that. voráček is just slinging that little man around like a rag doll. "he did for the bit" he did it bc every man in the nhl has at one point or another found johnny hockey the perfect size for hugging and that was voráček's chance for to hug im.
gosh i have only been to five ballparks ever in my life and three of those were in the bay area...i like that the cubs give you your mid-game sundae in a little helmet. that's fun. i mean you're never going to get better than the grandpa selling churros at the san jose giants ballpark, like that's always going to be my favorite, but i do find the wrigley field helmet sundae delightful and have on more than one occasion put the helmet on my dog.
i haven't trusted nick cicek's taste in music ever since he said his pregame hype music was 50 cent's "in da club." girl were you even alive when that song came out my god. oh no i just checked he was three whole years old. oh no help. i really don't trust him NOT to choose "like a g6" by far east movement, so i'm choosing for him based on vibes. since his vibe this year seems to be eldest daughter slash grandpa and he's staring down the barrel of the gun of the end of his entry level contract, i'm choosing two wartime favorites: "jumpin jive" by cab calloway or "sing, sing, sing" by benny goodman. we will never hear them. on pride night, he changes it to the andrews sisters' "beat me daddy, eight to the bar" to be funny and predictably scores his one whole goal of the season, an ot gwg. i would laugh so hard i start crying and would have to go stand in the hallway to calm down. the world (me, raptured with joy to another plane of existence, and henry thrun, psychosexually paralyzed with anxiety) would never be the same

stop saying i'm jealous. i'm not- i just. i don't like having to share. / @ aj
there's a moment where she gives him a look of absolute and total disbelief as she hears him say that. they'd been in the common room of their dorm with a group of their friends, having a tamer party where music was played along with video games. celeste had tugged april into a dance, plucking her right out of cody's lap. april laughed as she was twirled around, soon being dipped by her best friend. she'd caught the look on his face and soon pulled away from celeste to tug cody out of his seat. discreetly, she tugged him away from everyone else to figure out what was wrong. she knew by the look on his face back there.
he'd denied it vehemently, but april knew the truth. she could see it in the way he wouldn't make eye contact with her and how his jaw clenched. lips parted with a sigh and she stepped a little closer, placing her hand on his bicep and giving him a serious look. "i'm sorry, baby," her voice is a soft murmur, giving him a pout. she knew cody didn't like to share, but neither did celeste and she did her absolute best to give the two most important people in her life the attention they deserved. "c'mere, please?"

Q - A ship you’ve abandoned and why
Ohh. Okay so.
In THG I would def say Haymitch and Effie comes close. Though I wouldn't say I abandoned it. Just never got up the motivation to write fic/post about them.
But in the GoT fandom I've abandoned several. I shipped Jon and Dany in GoT BEFORE the big Jon reveal happened and dropped that so fast after that. There are others but that is my most noteable example of just straight up abandoning a ship entirely.

whats ur headcanon on the caravan after the final episode? obv its not big enough to be a community or anything so do you think its just maybe 2-5 random survivors? perhaps someone familiar is there?
i really liked ur post so i was thinking about writing on it! just need some ideas.
well i plan on writing my own idea as a short comic eventually so 👀 one of my many ideas on my many back burners. my idea with the caravan is very self indulgent and mostly serves as a way to set up ericson for success. because like.. what i Actually believe the intended purpose of the caravan was just supposed to be a way for ericson to begin to cautiously open up to the idea of fostering a wider community. making connections establishing trade that kinda stuff but still being protective of their community. so like, as i see it trade would happen in a indistinct location to still keep ericson relatively safe ("we'll come to you") but theyre getting comfortable with the idea of creating wider connections with other good people in need
so all of that ties into my (self indulgent) idea that jesus is a part of this caravan, and the caravan itself is on a journey to re-establish trade routes after the war severed communications between communities. when word makes it back to ericson about the names of the people in the group, clem goes out there personally to greet someone she thought she would never see again. jesus is pleasantly surprised to see her, and she recognizes him before he recognizes her. jesus meets aj. and then jesus tells clem hes already been in communication with the garcias, that richmond made it, and that he'll send word back to them and help to establish a trade route between the two. help ericson to stand on its feet. some solar panels, a generator or two, canned food and seeds for the greenhouse. javi personally makes the journey to deliver the supplies to them, and they all get to have a nice reunion :)

... the party that won is mafia that feeds on fear. Any type of fear. Fear of immigrants, of LGBTQ+, of corona, of Russian Aggression (that won't be there if we make ourselves allies, because WWII taught us nothing, apparently), of anything that makes people easy to manipulate. And HLAS (3rd most voted) is something that broke off of SMER when people got angry.
Like, do your research?
And don't give me " why did people vote for them when ..." because why did USAmericans vote Trump in when so many USAmericans are queer? Unfortunately, most of eligible voters are old, conservative, and possibly have Alzheimer's (and Matelko fucking suckedTM).
A teraz mi ty povedz, čo sa ti nepáči na programe Progresívneho Slovenska. A poprosím maj na pamäti, čo je na Slovensku v tomto momente legálne, a teda to nemusia mať v programe. Ja si počkám, idem spať, bohužiaľ zajtra musím do práce.

Crush was a cute movie, even if it was obvious who King Pun was almost immediately! Anyways the movie may be predictable, but it was cool to get this light sweet romcom with an all queer triangle. I mean, sexuality didn't even come into play here, it was basically just the same kinda movie you'd have with straight leads, only here they were lesbian/bi. One part I liked was where Paige flashes back to that time with Gabby that second time and realized AJ was into her back then.
Heh, right, the first time Paige said it wasn't her and Dillon was like, oh, then you have to date them, it was obvioussss. And then AJ kept on being like, so, why track, aren't you into ~art~? We knew!
But right, exactly, what's the problem with it being predictable and following known beats? Was it the best movie in the world? No, honestly, I could name a bunch of things that could have been improved on, but I enjoyed it and what else am I gonna ask of a high school romcom?
A bunch of these used to come out for hets every year and some would be remembered as classics, sure, but a lot were just enjoyed in the moment. There's just so much pressure on queer movies to make up for all the decades of deprivation and the tiny number we get even now, to be everything to everyone, to be significant queer rep for people of every background and in every situation and from every generation and they just can't be. Especially this genre. Sometimes it's fine to just be enjoyed in the moment.
And you know, I was turning over your comment about sexuality not coming into play here and thinking to myself, well, that's not exactly true, the little differences are brought up, coming out, even if fairly painless, specifically looking for queer out girls as potential love interests, that kind of thing.
But I think the real same treatment you're referring to, the lack of homophobia people have mentioned as well, it only hit me when I was rewatching scenes from the first party to get a clip, and you remember when AJ and Paige are interrogating everyone? And at one point they ask the horse girl, who's making out with another girl on the sofa? I think that was the first time it hit me how there wasn't a part of me that was constantly bracing for something the whole movie, that despite their own comfort with their sexuality they'd still be found out and be treated poorly for it or have boys sexualizing them.
In SO much f/f media out there, at least one person is closeted, so there's the constant fear of discovery and consequences, but even in the rare media where both people are out and comfortable, there's still the chance that, for example, the wrong person sees them, some gross man at a bar, a homophobic boss, a stranger on the street, literally anyone capable of danger, and I just never realized how heavy it weighed until I realized its absence. It's wild that it's just woven into the background fabric of almost every story, sometimes a main plot device, sometimes to be mocked and overcome, but just...always there. And this didn't have that. So for that alone, I'm going to think very kind thoughts toward it.
Oh, I loved that montage when Paige went through all their previous significant moments and realized that actually AJ was falling for her the whole time. Honestly, there were a TON of cute and romantic tropes sprinkled throughout the movie. I think if you're the kind of person who appreciates a more laid back slice of life kind of approach, this movie works especially well.
