Bad idea: Age gap discourse but in a fantasy land where there's multiple races who have vastly different lifespans and life styles.

Is it wrong for a 27 year old human to date a 140 year old stone elf, considering most stone elves don't get out of diapers till their 30s?

Is it wrong for a 80 year old dwarf to date a two year old fire wisp, when fire wisps only live up to 5 years (between the eruptions) and have memories of their past lives, so in a way they're "born" at age 400,000+? That octogenarian dwarf is way younger than the fire wisp that's only physically younger than some of the socks the dwarf has!

Is it wrong for a chronomancer who was never born to date, well, anyone? They are zero years old and infinity years old and negative one hundred and seventeen years old all at once. They look like an old human, sure, with the long white beard and the wrinkly skin, but as far as anyone can tell, they've always looked like that. We've seen the cave paintings.

Is it wrong for a 30 year old lizardman (that's old in lizardman years) to date a human who is 60 years old in biological years (because of aging spells), 26 years old in lived-experience years, but only 13 years old in calendar years? (ie, they were born 13 years ago, but spent some of that time in sideways timelines, so they've lived more years than have passed in their home timeline?)

Is it wrong for a 12,000 year old dragon date a pile of 400 kobolds when kobolds only live like 10 years on average, but reach full maturity in one year? And if you disagree, can you do anything about it? You do know what happened to the last policeman who tried to arrest a dragon, right? Their city is still smoldering, 50 years later.

Is it wrong for anyone to date the time worm? It's the same age, every year. So the age gap can only intensify. If you start dating the time worm when you're both the same age, when do you break it off because you've become too much older than them?

And most confusing of all... What about the fairies? They could be anything between a thousand and a day old, they would lie about their age either way, and they can look like whatever they want. There's fairies we know for a fact have been around since the founding of The City of Towers, who met the silent mother herself, and also look like they're at most ten years old. Is it wrong to date them, or just really uncomfortable for everyone who sees it? And on the other side there's fairies who are "born" (hatched? They come from plants, I'm not sure what the verb even would be. Seeded? Sprouted, maybe) this week who are already appearing like middle-aged men and dancing with widows in what looks like a scheme to run off with her fortune but they never take the money, because what would a fairy want with worthless metal discs? Maybe fairies have a hive mind or genetic memory or reincarnation with full memories, they'd never tell you or give you a straight (or consistent) answer anyway.

Stonefolk are really the only inter-race dating situation anyone can agree on. They're unthinking & unmoving solid rock during the day, so those hours don't count. Thus their "real age" is a nice even half of their true age. So if you meet a stonefolk who was dug out 30 years ago, watch out: that's a 15 year old, and if you're a 25 year human, that's too young for you, even though their dig-date is five years before your birth-date.

Is there anything you dislike about the pokemon anime?

OH BOY, ANON. Short answer: yes. Long answer, sort of no? Or, rather, nothing that I dislike outside of a petty, mildly annoyed sense OR nothing I care quite enough about to share my discourse take on. I don't have any genuine criticisms, because ultimately any I would have, I kind of signed up for by being a pokeani fan. Like, I know I'm not here for intricate plotlines or incredible character arcs. I'm mostly here for shitposting about the same four characters from 2007. I was the harley's ass blog for a while, after all. But for a more in-depth answer (mostly AG focused since I have to fact-check myself on it the least, though I'm sure I could bring stuff up for each gen)...

...Something that DOES bug me about pokeani is the concept of lost potential, or plots and ideas that lead nowhere. Like, in early early AG, May seems to be avoiding her dad and Petalburg city and then absolutely nothing is done with it. (Projection loss: character does not, in fact, have canon father issues for me to pay attention to instead of my own. Sad.) Another example? Drew being from a movie-only location, only for us to NOT SEE HIM IN THE ACTUAL MOVIE. SURE. But I've made like four posts about that by now, and I'll make another if someone asks me to. Another example??? Solidad as, like, an entire character. That deserves its own post. ily Solidad (Also Chloe- someone in the RBs, feel free to take that and go off about it!!!). Another? The People of the Water apparently being SUPER IMPORTANT TO MAY AND MAX'S HERITAGE, AND IT COMES WITH SOME DEEP INTERNAL CONNECTION TO MANAPHY/THE TEMPLE OF THE SEA but oops nope they only exist in that one movie, dw about it ever again. Brock's issues growing up with too much responsibility? You might get one or two mentions of it per generation but don't count on it actually being important to his character.

I would call this the GS Ball Problem, but at least we got some form of explanation for that one. Sigh. Good news is, here in optimist land, we can take all of this as fic/au opportunities and explore the foundation canon haphazardly laid!!! So, I wouldn't call this something I dislike about the anime per se as much as just something I don't GET, but hey, people take those gaps and do incredibly fun, interesting things with them, so I can't complain too much. Lapses in canon and a barebones foundation set the scene for fandom creativity and interpretation, which I honestly value more than anything canon would have thrown at us anyways.

And again, it's the pokemon anime. I KNOW I signed up for this, so I'm not writing a long post because I'm big mad about it, I'm writing a long post because I can't shut up and I like run-on sentences lmao.

So I used my time machine (which is canon to my blog but which can only be used for shitposting; there are reasons, don't worry about it) and I went ahead in time three years to see what was up with the Goncharov "remake," aka Goncharov (2025), aka the Meme that Became a Real Movie. 

Well, things started out promising even though Martin Scorsese simply would not bend to pressure and direct the Meme Movie, but when the Safdie Brothers DID sign on, it was with Scorsese's blessing. The script appeared to bounce around through most of 2023, there were three different writers attached in the span of five months, including Ronald Bronstein, Steven Zaillian, and most exciting at one point, Gillian Flynn. Most industry people really expected it to eventually fall to Zaillian, and that all of the hot potato was simply premature reporting. Put a pin in that.

This was around the time (July 2023) that Tumblr launched the ill-fated (to put it mildly) crowdfunding campaign so that user @tuvuofa, maintainer of the Goncharov fan wiki, could drop out of college to finish their screenplay, and move to Hollywood just to pitch it. @tuvuofa stole $21,000 of donations before deactivating their blog, deleting the wiki, and disappearing. A few blogs have since claimed to be the vanished scammer, offering hivliving-ian tall tales to explain the events. None have truly passed the sniff test. 

September 2023, the film was officially announced to have its stars, and this is where the trouble started. Robert Pattinson as Goncharov made sense, was a Safdie mainstay, and most were excited about this casting. There were exceptions. Case in point: 

So we had Pattinson as Goncharov, Florence Pugh as Katya - fine (the age gap discourse was heavy but brief), Avan Jogia as Andrei (we'll get back to that one), Jake Gyllenhaal as Ice Pick Joe, Nina Dobrev as Sofia, and Taylor Zakhar Perez as Sascha. 

Altogether, not bad. The cast was, for the most part, young, and a lot of them had proven acting chops. Even before principal filming started Goncharov (2025) was being hailed as the next "it" movie. 

Then, the trouble began. Robert Pattinson elected to drop out, the provided reason being Batman filming obligations even though the new Batman was already in the can by February 2024. This was bad sign number one. We all wondered "who's gonna play Goncharov now??" and at the same time we all were thinking "please not Harry Styles" 

Well, the monkey’s paw being what it is, it wasn't Harry Styles, but it WAS Timothee Chalamet. 

Then, the script drama. After Chalamet joined the film, we started to hear about rewrites. Nothing really added up, but we went along with it. Two weeks into principal shooting, the story breaks that the script still isn't even COMPLETE, and that studio meddling has been turning the movie into less of a tense, emotional crime drama with fleshed out characters and implied complex relationships, and more into a CW-esque melodramatic romance that just so happens to be set in the world of organized crime. In Naples. 

So as soon as this story drops, Robert Pattinson metaphorically jumps the fence of his enclosure and admits he was 100% lying about leaving due to Batman obligations, trashes the script as it was when he last saw it, and blows the whistle on the biggest bombshell to date: the Safdies aren't even attached anymore. 

Look, I'll make a long story short since the Time Cops are probably going to come in here blasting at any moment. Here’s the future of Goncharov (2025): the movie debuts to what can best be described as critical bemusement. Returns are paltry given the hype. Avan Jogia delivers the performance of his life, and his career enters its own Pattinson Arc of Respectable Unhinged Roles. Still, everyone agrees that he seems to be acting in a Completely Different, better film. The way he punches the wall during the Train Scene becomes a meme unto itself, as everyone is convinced he was channeling real anger in that moment at how wooden Chalamet's performance was. 

Time machine didn't have the juice to pop over to 2026, but last I heard a major campaign is underway, similar to #ReleasetheSnyderCut, to fund the Safdie helmed, Zaillian written, Pattinson starring version of Goncharov. 

Discourse is split between the camp that's pissed off because the IP is now owned by Legendary Pictures, so it won't "really" be Goncharov, and the camp that's thinking "finally the characters can be Neapolitan and things will make sense" because they didn't even read the synopsis of the movie. It's about the Russian mafia IN Naples, idiot.

- I don’t mind if you want to pair Wiggle and Gramble together. No one should mind. Please draw what you want. They’re both consenting adults. My opinion literally doesn’t matter! Do what makes you happy. Don’t attack people for shipping Gramble and Wiggle, don’t attack people for not shipping Gramble and Wiggle!!!! Think about this! Don’t even leave a passive aggressive comment or reblog it with judging tags. Leave folks alone. Block the pairing tag if you need to. No ones in the wrong here unless they started targeted harassment for really petty reasons!

- Floofty is, in canon, trans (non-binary) and deserves to be called by their proper pronouns. I’ve never made a post about Floofty with the intent of making fun of their pronouns. I am trans and non-binary leaning, and I made a lot of the goof posts on Floofty because we all like to get frustrated towards gender critical people. That’s where these comic ideas originated from, those are their intent. I will never draw Floofty experiencing actual transphobia because none of the muppet characters on that island are transphobic in canon. Floofty just uses they/them because it’s an actual pronoun and it’s normal.

- Wiggle’s character having a black voice actor does not make the fictional character Wiggle Wigglebottom immune to criticism for her actions that aren’t even SLIGHTLY race related. Because the actual grumpus characters are not racially charged. We can’t get into racism discourse about a game without racially charged characters that aren’t even human. Wiggles actions being based on a “drug addiction metaphor” doesn’t make them immune to criticism either! People are allowed to say: hey that was shitty of wiggle to do.

That’s not “demonizing wiggle” or “making wiggle out to be a villain” that’s just saying what happened in the game. It’s just the facts.

- Country accents are not AAVE. I would never make fun of AAVE, even in a shitpost comic. Gramble is just REALLY really southern in the game.

- Gramble being written as having trauma related episodes is not “babyfying” him. People being concerned about an age gap dynamic Gramble is in, due to their own trauma, is not infantilizing. If you draw Gramble acting only innocent and in a clear childlike way, that’s when infantilizing becomes a thing. That’s when the label fits. That’s when things get weird. People being concerned when I was in an age gap issue in real life was not them belittling me. It was just them being concerned. A lot of my comics are based on actual experiences I’ve gone through, and I see it all in Gramble. But that’s my take and it in no way has to effect yours. Don’t let it effect yours.

- THAT BEING SAID people who don’t want to see Gramble as being in a scary situation, for any reason, are completely fine too. They’re allowed to draw art where everything is okay in that relationship. If you try to make my opinion law I’ll find you and get you. Especially if you’ve been harassing people.

i know this is a shitpost but uh realtalk i hate this purity politics-née-discourse trend of ‘gonna bully X out of fandom’

it’s never about the actual negative shit like creeper dudes posting rape hentai in every female character’s or the racist sexists on nma/reddit but treats some teenager writing her self insert/charon fic as the greatest evil, or acts like women over 20 are predators for writing nsfw fic or shipping an age gap greater than 6 months or w/e the age discourse is atm

i have zero interest in m/f and want a het 10 miles exclusion zone around me at all times, but frankly after the bullying that gay content makers have received in this fandom and how horrible it was (and if you weren’t, go read the last posts in the kmeme for a stark example of the homophobia and transphobia simmering under the surface of this septic tank of a fandom), it’d be the height of hypocrisy to turn around and make that a personal praxis.
