Honestly, there’s nothing like “Heartbreaker,” just--

The entire musical has a strong presence of the ensemble. They’re always there, singing and dancing in the background, influencing the outcome of the story. An affirmation that Alice and gang aren’t entirely alone in the grand scheme of things. 

However, there are a total of three songs that don’t have any of the ensemble present; “She’s Gone,” “I Had a Vision,” and “Heartbreaker.” The only common theme between these songs is loss and mourning. Billy and Daddy Cane mourning Billy’s mother, Alice and Jimmy Ray mourning their lost opportunities, and Jimmy Ray mourning his son. And yet, Billy has his father and Alice has Jimmy Ray. In “Heartbreaker,” Jimmy Ray is the only one on stage for almost the entire song, no other characters, no ensemble. Even the onstage band is hidden for this number. 

This emphasizes just how alone Jimmy Ray feels. His resolve not to tell Alice what happened both literally and figuratively isolates him. He has to carry this secret alone and it’s the very thing that drives him away from the woman he loves. Steve Martin and Edie Brickell spared no expense when emphasizing Jimmy Ray’s loss.

Not to mention Paul Alexander Nolan’s acting is just phenomenal. The absolute disgust and hatred in “I’ve heard of evil in the world, but you and I are flesh and blood,” that quickly fades into despair at the line, “There goes our chance for happiness.” Paul Alexander Nolan was robbed of a tony nomination and no one can tell me otherwise
