Can we talk about The Giver by Lois Lowry from the perspective of a loveless person?

I'm going to start with a passage that runs through my head all the time when I think about my lovelessness, because it resonates with me in pretty much the exact opposite way that it's supposed to.

"Do you love me?" There was an awkward silence for a moment. Then Father gave a little chuckle. "Jonas. You, of all people. Precision of language, please!" "What do you mean?" Jonas asked. Amusement was not at all what he had anticipated. "Your father means that you used a very generalized word, so meaningless that it's become almost obsolete," his mother explained carefully. Jonas stared at them. Meaningless? He had never before felt anything as meaningful as the memory. "And of course our community can't function smoothly if people don't use precise language. You could ask, 'Do you enjoy me?' The answer is 'Yes,'" his mother said. "Or," his father suggested, "'Do you take pride in my accomplishments?' And the answer is wholeheartedly 'Yes.'" "Do you understand why it's inappropriate to use a word like 'love'?" Mother asked. Jonas nodded. "Yes, thank you, I do," he replied slowly. It was his first lie to his parents

I agree with Jonas' parents here. You aren't supposed to agree with them, because they're expression the views of the average person in this dystopian society where love has been eliminated. You're supposed to think "wow, this is a really fucked up society if parents don't love their children." More importantly, you're supposed to think "wow, this is a really fucked up society if no one feels love at all." But I agree with them. "I enjoy you" is a vastly more correct and useful thing for me to say. I do wish people used more precise language instead of the term that's been diluted to meaninglessness. I would love a world where we say things like "I'm happier when I talk to you" or "it's cool to be able to say I know someone so talented" instead of "I love you." That's exactly what I'd like.

I just... As someone who grew up to be loveless, it scares me how much I loved this book as a kid. I grew up to be the kind of person this book views as missing an essential part of the human experience. Lois Lowry thinks that being like me is dystopic. It's not fun to realize that about a book I read over and over, and then read again in school as the first book I really, properly analyzed for English class. Some fundamental part of me was formed when I wrote my first very angsty fanfiction about it for a school project. And this book looks at me with revulsion.

Lois Lowry is just wrong. I used to feel love and then stopped feeling it (and I need to post about that sometime, because all the loveless people I see talk about never having felt love and so I want to voice my own experience). I don't think I'm missing out. I have no desire to get it back. To be clear, I don't think I'm better off without it, either. It's a neutral thing. Some people feel it, some people don't feel it, and neither group is worse off. I wasn't any happier with it than I am without it.

I don't really have a point, except just that it sucks that the whole origin point of the teen dystopia craze that formed all of YA during my peak YA-reading years sees lovelessness as bad. But you know. Of course it does. So does the rest of the culture.

i also always felt like the fandom depicting reigen's childhood as abusive and neglectful never really quite fit. i know that most of it is probably just projection, and it's something i really understand because i've done it before with other characters.

i feel like there's a difference between giving a character trauma that makes sense when taking their canon self into account and giving a character trauma for other unrelated reasons, like comfort or even for fun, to be able to explore the scenarios that would come with it. both are very valid. let the people do what they want, y'know?

but something i feel like people tend to gloss over sometimes is that parents can fuck up when raising you and still not be outright shitty evil people. they can judge you on your career choices and still love you. your friends can make an off the cuff comment that ends up sticking with you in a bad way without realizing, people can suck at showing they care about you while still caring about you, they can be imperfect just as much as you are. it's their first time on this earth too. and it doesn't excuse the times they may have hurt you or made you feel bad about yourself, but it's up to you if you wanna keep them in your life. everyone can change, but that's also up to them.

it gives reigen an added charm [or should i say humanity?], to know that he is a flawed person and that it stems from the things that happened when he was younger, and the people that were in his life, and to know that things don't need to be catastrophic for them to affect and/or change you, whether good or bad. it's a good thing to remember i think. to know that there's so many greys between the white and black. that he has layers. his experiences are very valid.

Oh my god no don't apologize you're so right. I agree 100% so I'm gonna answer with my own long ramble.

(Discussions of child abuse below, though nothing that's not present in MP100 canon.)

Yes, it almost feels like people want to dismiss all flawed parenting and strained relationships between parent and child as abuse. There's certainly something very wrong with Reigen and his parents' relationship but I'm gonna be honest, I don't understand how people can find redemption in Toichiro who literally beat up his own son but then at the same time demonize Reigen's parents for the crime of disapproving his life as a CONMAN.

Yes, Reigen actually helps his clients and refuses to take money for things he cannot fix, but he's an incredibly special case and his parents are like most people who have no clue that the supernatural is even real. I personally think IRL psychics are full of shit and prey on the naive and emotionally vulnerable. If I had a kid who quit their normal job and spent all their savings to become a psychic I would not be happy with them! I would hope I wouldn't be as cold and that they wouldn't live in fear of my messages to them but I would definitely be encouraging them to stop that shit and get a "real job". To think that his parents should support his choices in life when he's pretending to be a psychic with no additional context is wild to me. (Also, I can't find the translation anymore but Reigen says in the fanbook that his mom thinks he's being tricked into doing his current job.) Again, they could go about this in a much better way but this disapproval does not inherently point to abuse.

(Sorry this rant got very long so everything else is below the cut.)

I think the biggest thing that points to Reigen's parents not being as awful as they are in fan content is that even after Reigen gets publicly exposed for being a con artist, his mom does tell him to learn his lesson from this but she also takes the time to prepare him an apology, tells him that he should come home (instead of telling him he's not welcome home/disowning him) and emphasizes that she's on his side. Maybe you could consider that the bare minimum of a decent parent but this to me just doesn't feel like she's the hateful abusive mother so often depicted. She could be warmer about it but she's obviously super concerned and wants Reigen to know she cares about him regardless of his actions.

(As for his dad, all we know is that he and Reigen don't talk to each other at all and that he thinks Reigen is unemployed. This relationship is definitely worse than Reigen and his mom's but there's little to go off of in terms of if his dad is a terrible parent or not. His mom seems to think he's worried about Reigen and that would definitely not surprise me.)

In terms of how Reigen feels about his parents, in the fanbook he acknowledges that there have been misunderstandings from both sides and that he'd like to talk things out with them and visit them more often. That's such a real thing lots of people can relate to and I'd love to see that get explored! I want to see Reigen patch things up with his parents! Maybe I'll write out my stupid fic idea for it idk.

I also don't want to stereotype but I am from an East Asian family myself and grew up surrounded by others so I feel like it's safe for me to say that Reigen's parents really remind me of your typical older generation of Asian parents. (Reigen was born in 1984 so his parents would definitely be of the boomer ilk, potentially even the Silent Generation if they had him on the older side.) Reigen also says in the fanbook that his parents are very serious people. Oftentimes with that older generation they just don't really show their care the way you'd normally see it. There may never be any "I love yous" but they'll cut you a plate of fruit without you asking or remember the show you liked 10 years ago and assume you're still into it...

Of course, parental norms in a culture don't justify hurtful parenting. (I mean just watch Everything Everywhere All At Once if you want to see the pain of having a disapproving Asian parent despite knowing they love you and just want what they think is best for you.) His mom fussing over his job and his lack of a girlfriend may be a super "Asian parent" thing, but it definitely hurts Reigen's feelings and she should cut that out. So yeah, Reigen's parents could do a lot better in terms of making Reigen feel supported and loved regardless if they approve of his life choices or not, but Reigen wants to patch things up with them for a reason and I'm hopeful that they can all reach a better understanding with each other.

One thing I also wish the anime showed was that Reigen's mom talks to him on the phone after Separation Arc! We see that in this omake:

Reigen definitely didn't tell his parents his phone number or his home address if his mom had to resort to emailing his business address just to talk to him. But I like to think that after Separation Arc he started letting his mom into his life a bit more...

God this was such a long rant, I'm sorry. One final thing before I get to your questions is that if we really need abusive parents to hate, Teru's non-present parents are ripe for the picking... Just saying.

25. What was your first impression of this character? How about now?

Gosh I initially thought he was just a silly goofy character who could be annoying and pathetic at times, but I enjoyed his presence on-screen. Then he got deeper in the Season 1 finale and showed just how much he truly cared about Mob... That part definitely got me shook. He only got better and better from there and now he's one of my favorite characters in the story.

9. Could you be roommates with this character?

Jesus christ uh I definitely don't think he'd be a bad roommate and we'd probably get along just fine but I also think I'd annoy the shit out of him. I'm not the best at keeping my space neat and clean. Also the thought of meeting Reigen in person is actually terrifying... Reigen should never exist outside the world of fiction because his pure chaos would be too much for reality.

22. If you're a fic reader, what's something you like in fics when it comes to ths character? Something you don't like?

Hmm I answered what I don't like last time, but I do like fics that explore his relationship with Mob or Serizawa. I also like seeing him confront more of his personal issues and grow as a person even if he gets a little hurt in the process-

Part of the weirdness about m/f ships feels like this kind of performativity from insecure queer teens? At least I think so based on my own experiences. I've always been a big multishipper who likes f/f m/m m/f and any other kind of ship equally but there was awhile where I felt kinda ashamed if I liked a m/f ship "too much" bc I felt like I wasn't gay enough. Like I wasn't queer enough if I didn't ship gay ships enough. Even now (tho I've gotten better) I still feel this obligation to keep the ratios of ship fics I read "even" so I can prove I'm still a good queer. I think in my case it's probably part of my internalized biphobia (since I feel a similar obligation to make I prove I have attraction to all genders and am really bi "enough" in my actual daily life) and it's a similar feeling of stress at having to constantly police your own identity/attraction/interests.

It's unfortunate that this kind of insecurity in how queer we are seems so common in queer people especialky those of us who are young one w/out much actual dating experience (who make a large part of this fandom. This sort of "who even ships m/f lol gay ships only" I've seen others in this fandom doing feels very much like a way of coping with that insecurity, by proving you're gay enough through your ships. I'm sure there are plenty of people who simply are just not interested in m/f but I'm sure there are also others like me, trying to prove we're queer enough by carefully curating our fandom interests.

My thoughts on m/f ships is that the end of the day, shipping is just shipping. It doesn't actually necessarily say much about your sexuality or what you actually want in a relationship and certainly doesn't mean you're less queer.

(Obviously there are other factors too in the weird attitude ppl in the mcyt fandom have about m/f ships, but this is one that has affected me a lot and I've never seen anyone else talk about it so I wanted to bring it up. Idk I hope I made sense)

Thanks for the ask! It was really nice seeing this as a bi person who heavily mains m/f and sometimes feels bad for it (I also main friendships but I mained m/f reallllly hard pre 2020 aka. before this fandom).

Yeah, I feel like it could also be like "we see so much m/f in real life so we should go hard on the other options to even it out". This fandom specifically there's been problems of irl truthing in comments so I completely understand why people shy from it, but it's 2024, we're quite developed in the character vs cc divide, shipping m/f isn't the end of the world.

I do feel guilt over maining m/f (then liking f/f and m/m, in that order, yes Treebark is the exception and my first m/m that I really got into), like for a looong time I was pretty sure it was just terrible heteronormativity that I needed to kill, but now I feel like it's a mix of heteronormativity (which I fight like daily lmfao) and just. being attracted to men and women both. Because when I write m/f, I can write about being attracted to women and men all in one neat package. And it feels "equal" to me. I do tend to prefer pieces of media with an equal gender ratio, or at least the leads are (eg. Miraculous Ladybug (my ex fandom lmao), Kagerou Project (ex fandom, stares into the distance), Spy x Family, Assassination Classroom) so I can love male and female characters. When reading fics, I like reading about loving a man from a woman's pov and loving a woman from a man's pov. Even in HC with its highly uneven gender ratio, this manifests in the corner I've tucked myself into (False, Ren, Stress, Iskall, etc). Although I do also like media with mostly female characters - Love Live (another ex fandom lol), Precure, Madoka Magica, Nikkiverse - and I do read stuff, I just don't really write for them because I wanna write about girls AND guys. Shippy or not. And this leads me to main m/f a lot. That's my personal taste.

Side note: as a kid, I was frustrated by media aimed at boys which had like a whole cast of boys and one token (cardboard cutout) girl AND media aimed at girls which had a whole cast of girls and almost no boys. 9yo me in co-ed school was like "well this doesn't feel very pro gender equality, I want books with the same amount of boys AND girls :((((( oh wait. I can just write it." And.... it ended up defining what I write now? Even outside of shipping, I like m+f friendships a lot. Because I still get to write about a guy and a girl even if they don't kiss or whatever. Idk. Am I cursed with an extreme case of heteronormativity and / or internalised homophobia or am I bisexual. Maybe both. Idk.

Maybe I do have boring stupid milquetoast hetero taste whatever but I'm having a good time in my fandoms and my ships / dynamics. I like writing about my guys and girls and I'll keep on doing it. And I am queer. I am bisexual. This doesn't change.

Anyways watching HTTYD at a young age changed me. Hiccstrid you will always be my origin story <3

Thanks for the ask again! We don't have to prove our queerness because we are queer. Everyone has different tastes. And m/f does get a bad reputation in queer spaces because oftentimes it's done badly and ofc the enemy.... heteronormativity [evil].

Final note re sibling fanon: if you have to turn friends into siblings just to show you're not shipping, you are coming back to heteronormativity. Why can't a (straight) man and a (straight) woman be friends only. What assumptions are you making?

AkanP: Sure. But, um, since it's almost time for the show, you'll have to understand quickly, okay? I know you might not get the difficult stuff, but I'll explain it properly ♪

Kohaku: I can practically hear HiMERU-han's stress gauge shootin' through the roof...

HiMERU: It's okay. Thanks to Shiina, HiMERU is used to his goodwill going to waste.

HiMERU: If you can't do anything else, won't you at least be an outlet for stress relief?

HiMERU: You're in the middle of work, why do you carry such a thing with you?

AkanP: When you have little kids around, it's inevitable...

I basically only produce girls in ES, but surprisingly, sometimes blunders can be smoothed over with a sweet treat.

HiMERU: Female idols, you say. They don't get recognized at all in ES, which is why useless producers are pushed on to them.

AkanP: Please don't call me useless~... It hurts my feelings.

So, um, it's been a while since I've produced boys, so please forgive me if I make any mistakes.

HiMERU: (Been a while? Does that mean it's not the first time?)

(Well, despite seeming young, only an experienced producer could accumulate so many negative rumors...?)

AkanP: At any rate... I didn't have enough time to work out the details of Matrix, but as I was struggling with that, a very talented girl helped me out.

Her name's Anzu-chan, do you know her?

Hiiro: Of course. It'd be rarer to find someone in ES who doesn't know her.

Aira: ES takes pride in her being a super talented producer, after all!

AkanP: Right, it's amazing for such a young girl... Well, she said she'd help me, so I asked her to think about the details of the competition.

So, I think we're pretty much on track there, right?

HiMERU: Anzu-san must be very busy with her change in position starting in the new fiscal year, and yet she has been burdened with all this unnecessary work...

Niki: Change in position? Really? Where does HiMERU-kun always get that kinda information?

HiMERU: Primarily from the well-informed Deputy Director, but also from HiMERU's own personal research. He's rather adept at that sort of thing and enjoys it.

Rinne: Yup, the Great Detective Crazy:B's proud of ♪

AkanP: Hehe. So, um, what was I saying...? Right, this Matrix is set up as a fateful showdown between Crazy:B and ALKALOID

These two rookie units will compete to see which are the superior idols.

Tatsumi: Although there's nothing fateful about it. Well, I understand the point.

HiMERU: There is a lot of personal history involved, however.

AkanP: Yup. So, um, what did Anzu-chan say again...

Oh, right. Maybe the challenge in this Matrix contest should center on proving one's prowess as an idol.

By pitting idols against each other like this, we'll find out who truly excels at it, right? Um, do you understand what I'm saying?

Tatsumi: Prowess as an idol? Yet another vague statement...?

AkanP: To be specific, see, this time it's supposed to be ten matches. Well, I mean, I made the call on that.

So, in Matrix, I'd like to ask you to compete with the ten elements necessary to be an idol.

Aira: The ten elements necessary to be an idol?

AkanP: Yeah. Um, for example, in the first match, you'll compete in "singing ability." There's also, uh, what else, "acting ability" and "attractiveness"—

Basically, each match will test those ten crucial elements for idols.

After ten matches, the unit with the most wins will be considered the superior idols.

Aira: It's kinda rude to call it surprising, but it does sound surprisingly interesting. Feels like some sort of variety show.

AkanP: Right? Sounds fun, doesn't it? It's amazing, really, how the plan started getting interesting after Anzu-chan chimed in—

She's been a big help! I'll have to buy her dinner or something later.

HiMERU: At this stage, are you really making her help you free of charge...

AkanP: She's the type of girl to decline compensation... She's not assertive at all. Hehehe, she reminds me of my younger days.

HiMERU: Isn't it a rather disturbing future prospect for a talented producer to end up as a landmine producer...?

AkanP says "Shiina" in hiragana instead of kanji, indicating some stiltedness in the way it's said.

The SaMs/LaEs Monty hater in me that skips any and all episodes where it's just Monty+Another character (Like Earth, Lunar, or Moon). I even skip gameplays with him in it. He's only ever nice and decent to Earth, and Lunar by extension. Can't even be nice to other people that Earth cares about. My girl deserves better, I'm sorry, I had to say it. I don't care if he "treats her well", that's the bare minimum. Spoiling her with gifts feels like love-bombing to me or maybe that's just me nitpicking because of what I went through in a previous relationship. But anyway, point is Earth deserves better! He still secretly calls her mommy, like mumbling it and it's ick!

I think Monty stopped calling her Mommy a long time ago. He only called her that during his first meeting with her. And maybe one or two times after that, but... Eh... Shrug.

I do think Monty is an interesting character, but since he's left the main circle cast of TSAMS and got his own show with MAFS, I feel his intelligence has gone down significantly.

They focus more on his rage, and he tends to be more stupid, when in the early days of TSAMS, he was overly cautious when it came to Evil people but he was just stupid with money.

It is interesting to see his character evolve, but I kinda wish we could go back to what he had.

I do like morally grey Characters, and like... Monty is quite an interesting asshole. But I will give him this, he is entertaining for me.

I don't expect my characters in media to behave logically sometimes. And I have a mixed relationship with the direction they're taking Monty right now....

And I'm one of those people who doesn't like him with Earth that much.

At the bare minimum, we know his war crimes were fake, as he admitted in their therapy.

But like...

He has actively threatened Earth's family, (Lunar, Solar... and Ruin if he counts) he has threatened children, and not just FC. In the recent LAES episode, he kinda hinted that he beat up a few children who threw golf balls at him and Earth is just like "haha you're silly." (looking back, she probably thought she was joking)

I mean... they're cute. He treats her nice. But that's the bare minimum.

I feel she can do a whole lot better.

I get that "opposites attract" and everything....

But at some point...

There's a limit.

It almost feels they have nothing in common and are just together cus the vas are dating.

I get that Monty "showed her the world" or whatever and opened her heart to romance. but that could have been anyone....

The episode where Monty faked he was being sick just to cuddle with Earth in MAFS was my least favorite episode and actively triggered me just cause of how closely it resembled abusive relationships I've been in before.

Earth even knowing he's lying but tolerating it cus she likes him to stick around.... FC asking what they love about eachother, and neither of them really have a good answer..... As they both only like eachother for what they can do for eachother. Earth liking that Monty opened her up to new experiences, and Monty liking Earth for what she can do for him. Which to me, feel very surface level.

I've heard people argue: "well, you can't just list on the spot what you like about someone."

Yes I can. I can literally do that with all of my friends and it's a long list and it's not just things that they do for me, it's who they are as a person and more substantial things to little things.

I know Monty and Earth have only been dating for a few months, but I think they would have had more they liked about eachother by now.

So is this me heavily projecting? yeah. Is it wrong if people like Monty and Earth Together? No way! Honestly ship them if you like.

But honestly, for me personally I need something more substantial.

Monty is literally her opposite and they don't have much in common and actively hurts kids and her family when it was something Earth would put her foot down in any other scenario.

Ah I see you've chosen the characters from my main project of the last 12 years. The original brain rot that is Shuriken Souls. In that case, imma have to go with the whole list 🤣 I would've gone in game to take a sims pic but since I wanna make them better I'm just gonna go with their actual artwork and maybe some sim pics sprinkled in.

Neither of them because they're above that. Plus Hikaru owns way too many priceless artifacts and valuables that he's over protective of so...

Hikaru might if his demonic side comes out, but he usually has it under control unless he's plastered.

How often do they argue/disagree?

Very rarely, but when it actually happens, it can be quite big. At the start of Shuriken Souls (not the prequel/Freshman Year), they're taking a break due to a fight.

Who is the first to apologise?

Depends on what the fight was about, but neither of them are going to be first if they believe they're in the right.

Who has the strangest desires?

Probably Toshio because he actually likes getting whipped with Hikaru's chain whip. There's definitely a non sexual desire for punishment for loving Hikaru which is also part of it, but he'd keep that to himself.

Both of them are sadistic, but as above and really just with Hikaru, Toshio can be masochistic.

Specific kinks...uhhh Hikaru likes banging in front of mirrors (if it's convenient enough) so he can show off how good he's making you feel and can get the best views of you. Just a little conceited. Toshio is a professor at Southern Temple Academy in Tamashi Tera. He has classes in most of the sciences, maths, computer science, combat, and is the advisor of the sewing club (the club was forced on him cause no one would take it)

Hikaru is a historian and works with and as a museum curator in many museums across the world. He's also an archeologist, but the reality of that is that he's just "finding" things he's hidden around the world over his centuries of travels and digs them up/finds them again once they're of value depending on the time period. Most of the antiquities he's recovered, stay in his own private collection which he keeps in multiple floors of his building and then he loans the artifacts out. He also gives talks on them and writes history books. At the same time, he attends Southern Temple Academy as a student even though he really doesn't need to, but he does it for Kaori and it has some benefits even if it's dangerous as a demon.

I've been reading Low and Highs (of Adrien Agreste) by Blackcats_Butterflies (though I'm a little behind on the latest chapters). I love fics where the writer puts something of their own experience into it and this fic integrates it so well.

Adrien's been diagnosed with T1D in the fic so it follows him as he adjusts to that and the writer really takes the time to explain the medical side of things (even with diagrams!).

I'm not really sure. I read a lot as a kid and always had an active imagination. I've also always been a chronic daydreamer. Baby Selkie always dreamed of being and Writer/Illustrator when they grew up, and I guess in a way I sort of am 😅

For fanfiction specifically, I think I started back when I was maybe 13-14 and had just really gotten into anime and manga? Yes. Teen me wrote Naruto and Bleach fanfic. They're buried on the internet somewhere. And will stay buried.

I'm sorry in advance because I have this horrible habit where I'll have something I really want to talk about but I'm too ashamed(?) to talk about it to anyone so I'll send it in an anonymous ask to somebody who I don't really even talk to. OK MY BATMAN OC (you don't need to know a lot about batman for this [I don't think] don't worry) he is still in the works but his name is Wilhelm Bjørnson. He came to Gotham when he was 14 as a foreign exchange student from Norway for a schooling project for gifted/exceptional students in the foster care system, which he entered after his parents committed a double "suicide".

He was a big big big history buff, specifically from the 14th -17th century but set that aside to pursue what he was raised to be a "safer and more stable" career than a historian, a doctor. He excelled in his studies but this also re opened his fascination with, to put it bluntly, blood and guts. Over the years this fascination grew into more of an obsession as he'd see how a living body of a lab rat could handle the malpractices used in history, more specifically ones used during the bubonic plague. And this is where I start to get ashamed. In med school, he meets Dr. Jonathan Crane (a.k.a. Scarecrow, a doctor/college professor obsessed with fear who attempts to cure humanity of unnecessary anxieties and phobias via and intense fear hallucinogen. His experiments are shut down due to malpractice so he becomes bitter and uses his drug, or toxin, to terrify Gothamites and make them see all of their greatest fears rather than to help people. Back to Wilhelm.).

Him and Crane become almost a mentor/apprentice relationship as Crane shows him that he can use human subjects to further his research as long as it's "in the name of science", like he does. Wilhelm takes this about as well as you'd imagine and begins to see how a body reacts to things such as leeches being intentionally attached or blood letting on a minor scale and even the occasional vivisection after exposure to a disease. When Wilhelm graduates and becomes a real doctor he's forced to put down his hobby. It's maddening for him. He reverts back to animals he finds in alleys to hold him over, but when he sees on the news that his ex professor and dear friend, Dr. Crane, has been arrested for gassing the narrows and sending them all into hysterics, he's pushed past his breaking point. He pays Crane's apartment a visit and borrows some fear toxin from him, which he uses on some guards to break Crane out of Arkham. After that he begs Crane to, once again, let him be his understudy.

Crane says yes after some convincing and he makes himself a costume consisting of a crow-like plague doctor mask (I know it's inaccurate to the time period, I like to imagine that because of his friendship and loyalty to Crane he uses it anyways because it strikes more fear into victims and also plays off of his crow theme) and an all - black outfit to match that I won't go into detail with. Wilhelm takes up the persona of Night Terror, the dedicated and loving companion to Scarecrow. He assists in Scarecrow's plots for mass hysteria and, when given the chance, enjoys singling out his own victims to purposefully infect and then use extremely outdated medical procedures on. Eventually, he and Scarecrow sort of accidentally adopt a son together that is also an oc of mine if you'd like to hear about him to lol sorry for this long thing

“No, I lent it to Tiergan, sorry but there may be something over on my bookshelf,”

“It's okay I’ll probably just ask Tiergan for it tomorrow, it's actually kinda perfect I've wanted an excuse to stop working for hours, do you want to go get some custard bursts from that stand down in Atlantis?”

“Yes! I've been meaning to try their new orange chocolate ones,” Elwin says while gathering his books and putting them carefully back in their place on his desk.

Elwin gave me my favorite stuffed animal when we were thirteen and I had just broken my leg, elves have mixtures to make bones heal faster than humans I’ve been told but it’s still not exactly a fun experience. Elwin knowing this and being the best kind of friend you can have came into the infirmary with a bright tie-dye elephant with multi-colored eyes and the biggest floppy ears that I'm pretty sure are bigger than its head, I still sleep with that thing and I'm about to graduate from foxfire, since that day they also have made everyone else in our friend group a stuffed animal,

Now I enjoy school mostly if its skill based but breaks and the end of it are definitely the parts I look forward to the most, especially lunch, our friend group is pretty large so most study periods we’re spilt apart but lunch is the one where were all together, its also the place that we as a group get detention the most. The only negative is that Elwin is wildly good at convincing me to eat some of the most disgusting things you can imagine.

I don't know exactly how or why Elwin and I became friends but I do know that I'm incredibly happy we did and can't imagine not having them in my life.

glass analysis time!!! it’s been a while for me!

people comparing it to deadnaming are SO CLOSE but instead of considering the context they project onto the POV character in “real time” and miss the point completely. bc to me it came across as the opposite of deadnaming.

when i first read ch 9, the way you described tommy using wilbur’s name and the way the story was going so far, i actually found it comparable to when someone starts using a the right name/pronouns, bc using new pronouns, even if they’re the right ones, can feel super weird at first bc you’re not used to hearing it and bc of internalized transphobia. but there’s a part of you that thrills at hearing it and the more you hear it the more right it sounds and hearing your name becomes something euphoric rather than dysphoric or apathetic. (obviously i know that this is not a universal trans experience, but i’ve seen other people talk about it so it seems at least somewhat common)

this is where my mind went based on your descriptions, especially when tommy asks wil if any part of him recognizes his name and the “bird in a cage in his chest” perks up

like, wil has literally had his personhood denied and been conditioned to believe it’s right and him and many others believe it is bc of the notion that religion should never be questioned, both by its own people bc it demonstrates a “lack of faith” (is an effective way to control people) and by people not affiliated w the religion bc of “respecting others’ religion”

how many people have experienced something similar in real life??? quite a few it seems. and in my experience, these people tend to not respond well to being told by someone else who they are, even (and especially) if it’s true.

plus, similar to wil coming to terms w the abuse he faced in stars, it can really hard for abuse victims to acknowledge that they’ve been abused, bc if the illusion of control and all that.

(kids will complain about having to explain why the curtains are blue then turn around and not understand a very obvious unreliable narrator in a detailed, intentionally-written piece of MINECRAFT ROLEPLAY FANFICTION. i don’t wanna say “touch grass” but maybe at least pay attention in english class???)

honestly I didn't have that exact experience in mind when I was coming up with the concept of the name thing, but it fits SO well. he's been told for so many years now that he shouldn't have a name. he's dedicated himself fully to that belief in order to cope with his entire situation, that it feels wrong to hear his name! but he stills recognizes it as his. even after all these years, there's a part of him buried deep down that wants to hear it even if he tries to deny it

also yes!! like stars!wilbur, it's gonna be so hard for glass!wilbur to accept the fact that he was abused by a religious institution! the faith he's been forced to accept and dedicate his entire being to has hurt him in unimaginable ways that's not gonna be an easy thing for him to just realize and accept.

omg that ask saying that steve being so far from autistic that it makes a mockery of the diagnosis. have they never heard of masking? i honestly call bs on them working with autistic people for years, because of it being a spectrum there are so many different ways people present and mask. both me and my sister are autistic, diagnosed by a medical professional (not that self diagnosis is less valid, but I could see that anon calling me on it). both of us share traits with steve. when she is masking, my sister is super confident and a really good people person. she can talk to almost everyone, and kind of flourishes in working in retail because she is good at talking to people, but is less good at actually making friends. I'm less good at talking to people in a casual way, but I can be a huge flirt when im focusing on masking, even if the flirting isn't good. and both of us get very attached to the people we care about and get jealous when the relationships feel threatened (very much like steve does over dustin becoming friends with Eddie).

and what does steve being trans masc have anything to do with his masculinity? a lot of trans masc guys are very masculine. what parts they were born with has nothing to do with how masculine someone is. and the feminine cis guy thing? some very masculine guys can be in touch with their feminine side. they like to incorporate little bits of femininity, and it doesn't affect his masculinity. (and I don't buy steve as this ultra hyper masculine guy anyway. because in the show he is pretty much the only guy shown to really put care and pride into his appearance. like his whole attitude with his hair doesn't really scream ultra masculine to me.)

and anyway, what is wrong with projecting onto a character? I'm over 18, so I don't feel comfortable projecting onto the kids, and it feels like we know the least about steve, so he is easy to project these traits onto, compared to some of the other characters.

yeah. they seemed really enraged that autistic people were witnessing their own traits in their favourite character. like, don’t get me wrong, some people do project too hard and strip characters of their entire personalities, but people wanting their favourite characters to be nd aren’t the problem. and yeah! autism is a spectrum, what one experiences, another won’t.

yeah, steve is interesting. because though he is quite a masculine character, he clearly doesn’t have an issue with some degree of femininity. he uses women’s hairspray and has a detailed and highly specific hair routine. like, steve isn’t as feminine as some in the fandom like to make him out to be, but that’s an entirely different issue to people that headcanon him as trans masc.

a big part of fandom is projection onto characters, everyone does it! does it sometimes get a bit annoying when a characters personality can get entirely wiped away, yes. and can some fandom wide headcanons be a bit iffy. sure! but honestly most of the headcanons that anon was annoyed about were some of the tamer ones.

When the Bellflower Blooms: Brothers

AN: Shoutout to @eyecandyeoz and @maelove21 Without your encouragement, I would have never have done this series.

The trio were relaxing themselves in a hotel room. Onora laid on the couch, her head on Maul lap while her feet are on Thrawn's. A bottle of spotchka was being passed around, making them all relax. The topic of their conversations were past experiences.

“So let me get this straight,” Onora said “You got bisected, fell to a garbage planet, stayed there for 15 years and held up a spider like body by sheer force of will?”

“Yes” Maul said with a smug grin, his fingers brushing her hair. “I did.”

Onora blinked at him.

“That's fecking gnarly.”

Maul laughed while Thrawn just gave a grin. There was a moment of silence until Onora spoke up.

“Hey Maul, you had a brother, right? I mean , I saw the bounty on you guys?”

Maul raised an eyebrow, but answered.

“Yes, his name was Savage Opress.”

“Yes, Savage.” she said, letting the name roll off her tongue, “Do you think...”

She looked to the side, embarrassed by her question.

“Would your brother...would he have liked me?”

The question seemed to catch him off guard, but he gave her a soft smile.

“Oh, my sweet.” he purred “He would have adored you.”

He leaned his head back, lost in thought but still brushing his hand through her hair.

“He would have been so glad that someone like you was with me.” He said “Someone to keep me in check and someone I was happy with.”

He then frowned.

“If anything, he would have probably have feelings for you as well. And I don't think I can handle if someone else liked you like that.”

Thrawn suddenly snorted, covering his face as he snicked.

“Oh be quiet.” Maul snapped in annoyance. Thrawn composed himself and continued to listen.

“I also had another brother, named Feral. He was the youngest of us apparently.”

Onora frowned, thinking of all the info she heard, she never heard of another brother. Thrawn also had a contemplative look.

“What happened to him?” she asked.

“When Savage was turned by the nigthsisters, they controlled him to kill him.”

Onora made a small squeak as she let that sink in, her heart going out to all three brothers. She felt a burning rage well up inside of her, cursing the emperor to oblivion for all the lives he deformed.

“I'm so sorry.”

Maul sighed and took a big gulp of his spotchka. He then looked down at his lover.

“And what of your own brothers, dear heart?”

Onora scoffed, crossing her arms.

“I don't give a damn what they think. I had to raise them cause my dad and stepmother couldn't. They all turned into a bunch of ungrateful shits that can barely do anything themselves.”

She huffed again, making her two lovers grin at her puffed out cheeks. Her face then softened.

“Yancy is a good kid though. He is the youngest, I was more of his mother then his own mom was. Hell, I taught him how to walk.”

She gave a small smile.

“I think if anything, he would want me to be happy. But he would want to make sure you two are appropriate for me.”

Maul laughed out loud at that, thinking her brother would probably be horrified by him and Thrawn. Thrawn looked thoughtful at them and smiled softly.

“I had a brother once.”

Maul and Onora swiveled their heads to the chiss, surprise on their faces.

“His name was Mitth'ras'safis, his core name was Thrass.”

He sighed as he remembered his brothers face and the times they spent together.

“The chiss family dynamics are much more complicated then most other species but Thrass was actually a cousin of the Mitth family. But he then declared me as his brother.”

Onora nodded slightly, she was still trying to understand how those dynamics work; the complicated nature of them made her head spin.

“He taught me alot, he especially had a love for the theatre..”

He took a sip of his spotchka, silent for a moment.

“How did he die?” Maul asked.

“He was trying to save a group of survivors from a star-ship crash, but he didn't make it.” Thrawn said. “He was also working with me on a project. His death did not help my reputation but I know deep down that he died a warriors death.”

Onora sat up and took Thrawn hands in her, giving it a comforting squeeze.

“I also had a sister.”

That caught her attention again; he also lost two siblings?

“She was force sensitive. Force sensitive chiss children are taken early to work as navigators for the Asendancy. She was six when she was taken away and I haven't seen her since.”

He then gave Maul a look.

“They are called skywalkers.”

Onora saw a look of surprise on the zabraks face and wonder just what it meant. She decided to ask another time.

“But Thrawn, that's wrong. That's totally wrong.” she said, squeezing his hands harder. It just didn't make sense to take children away to just use them.

“Its no different then the jedi, my darling.” Maul said, looking a little concern that Onora just look so disturbed. Thrawn smiled as he rubbed his thumb on her hand.

“He would have liked you a lot.”

Onora smiled shyly at that.

“He probably wouldn't have agreed about the poly-amorous situation, but if I was happy, he will be happy.”

Onora and Maul laughed at that, but both men couldn't help but wonder what could have been, if their brothers would have lived.

11. Are you partial to a certain character/pairing or are you more equal-opportunity? If you are partial to any character/pairing, why do you think that is?

i tend to go through phases where i write mostly one pairing (gee i wonder what pairing that could be rn... 😵‍💫) but that said, i tend to write more from story ideas that i want to explore, and then picking a pairing/characters that suit the story i want to tell and working from there!!

17. What highly specific AU do you want to read or write even though you might be the only person to appreciate it?

more genuinely, almost everything i write comes from a place of something that's interesting and compelling to me, regardless of how i think it will be received/appreciated/understood by other people skjfbnksfb i'm lucky enough to have many friends and mutuals who are willing to read my silly little things regardless of how niche and bizarre they might be <3 but yeah idk. im headfull spiderman!fig atm sooooo

36. Do you visualize what you read/write?

yes!! consistently!! i can't really imagine trying to write without being able to visualize what i'm writing about- the setting, the surroundings, the expressions and body language of the characters, etc- when i'm particularly blocked, i tend to go back and focus on describing the visual and sensory experiences of the scene i'm stuck on, and that usually helps!! honestly a lot of the time i bemoan my lack of visual artistic ability because i have such vivid imagery for scenes in my head that i can't communicate in any way but through words </3

37. Promote one of your own “deep cut” fics (an underrated one, or one that never got as much traction as you think it deserves!). What do you like about it?

ooooh uh. honestly? my gorgug pov slasher follow up 😵‍💫 i think it's really strong and clean and i think it's a really effective sequel to the original slasher fic <3 also my two bad kids anxiety fics which are wholehearted and unabashed self projection but i think they're really fun <3

Oh, this. I love it, but the practical side of my brain breaks out into a cold sweat when I think about it. The concept as teased out on my innocent blog (ha) is basically three stories in one universe - again - and I know from experience that's a lot to take on at once. There's a reason why I didn't wind up fleshing out a lot of stuff in DYWGU.

Practicalities aside, because we know I'm not as driven by practicality as I could be, this is all to say that, yes, I have been thinking about this AU. A lot of it has been about structure, because structure would dictate a lot - is it three stories all happening in one fic, or three distinct stories happening in one universe? I had a thought about it being one monster of a fic with Bea/Naomi/Roman being POV characters whose stories wove in and out of each others', but it would be such a tremendous effort that it would probably eliminate any chance of me juggling as many fics as I normally do. At the time of YKWniverse, that was my only project.

Uh, more to what I think you were asking, as narrative/character ideas. I spent a good amount of time (buses are good for this) conceptualizing the Kendall/Naomi relationship outside of what we saw, but specifically from Naomi's angle. Historically, Naomi has not had much success in relationships. She's fun at a party and can be affectionate and warm in her own way, but she's very insecure, and has a habit of letting boundaries get pushed through even on accident. Kendall has/had many faults, but he had a deep understanding of where Naomi was coming from, and respected her boundaries. At the time of Kendall's death, Naomi's decided it's do-or-die with Kendall, and was on the verge of suggesting a serious step or running away from the possibility of a real, full relationship in inexperienced terror. Naomi has never been seen the way she's been seen by Kendall, and it's true for Kendall as well. That night in the helicopter was transcendent for both in a way - not love at first sight, but deep connection at first high.

When it comes to Stewy and Kendall's death, it wrecks him in a single blow. He's Stewy, though, so he falls into a deep depression and tortures himself with the past and what might have been had he reached out with more effort, but makes a serious effort to engage with the world around him only for it to become very clear he shouldn't. Roman is the one who finally convinces him, after hearing enough gossip, to step aside for a time and just try to survive the worst of the grief. Stewy can't even bring himself to talk about it, and devotes himself wholly to listening to Roman instead, because he needs it - Stewy certainly doesn't, right? - and god knows Stewy's used to listening to Roys talk. It's a long time before Stewy brings himself to ever mention how deep the relationship and the scarring with regards to Kendall goes.

Bea is the simplest arc here, by sight alone - Kendall's daughter, addict, beloved of her family, and heiress to the throne, trying to put the pieces of the past together. I think this turns into a story of generational trauma, not just of Bea, but how Logan's parenting impacted not only his children but his children's children, including Iverson, Sophie, any kids Roman and Stewy have, and Bea. The parents are still deeply impacted by the events and will push back on anyone trying to dig it back up, but once Bea starts to dig she won't be alone.

God it took forever to write this ask. Lol. I'm so grateful it didn't refresh midway like it did one time I wrote one of these.

I said it yesterday, Seb’s quotes were going to be the inspiration for this Monday Motivation. Mainly because I strongly believe that if we keep talking about Seb as a human, he is never leaving us for real. Yes, I am in denial and it hasn’t sunk in yet. I wanted to make a whole Daniel/Mick/Seb/Nicky Monday Motivation… but now I think I’ll shine a little spotlight on these beautiful quotes.

Yesterday I saw a TikTok that said ‘only six more weeks till 2023’ and normally it would give me the biggest rush of anxiety. “SIX WEEKS? But I haven’t achieved a whole lot and there is so little time…” But this year I am taking a different approach. Instead of just looking at the big things (like working for a company I loved, getting back on track with making myself healthier and of course getting my bachelor diploma last week), I am looking at all the small things that in hindsight made a big difference for my happiness and I want to ask you to do the same. I would love to hear the small things that made your January till November happier! 🧡

Here’s a small list of mine: I got closer with my friends since high school, I met new people and became close with them, I started doing these Monday Motivations and we became closer, I went on small little trips that are now big memories, I put myself out there and started this dating journey, I went to more concerts in a year than I’ve ever done, I started to take more pictures (no… I am not starting a babette.jpg even though I do think I could run a good account), I’ve seen more F1 cars in a year than I’ve ever done and most importantly I chose myself countless of times.

So, am I gonna give you a piece of homework this week? Yeah, I am! Write that list! Sit yourself down and write/record/sketch/whatever else a list of moments. Little moments of happiness and positivity to combat the stress of this year almost coming to an end. And if you feel like sharing, I’m a nosy bitch so… send them my way 🥰

I'm still sick so I missed this post on Monday (also I'm still very much not over Seb having officially retired. I think I'm gonna join Lewis his delusional world and convince myself he's coming back).

Anyways I'll give you my list right here, right now (might forget some things):

Being able to watch Seb drive irl at Spa. Super grateful to my dad that he wanted to share that experience with me. I still think about that day.

I learned how to crochet!!! And I'm loving it so much. I make plushies, I make flowers, I made a tote bag for my friend's birthday.

I finally after years having felt like I had to lose weight for others (like as a kid I had to do it for doctors or my mom etc etc) and fail. I finally can say I'm 100% doing it for myself, doing it my own way and letting no one interfere with it, and I already am having small victories. Which I'm really proud of. I also am going to make a documentary about this for my school project. So wish me luck on that one haha

I realized how much more happier and relaxed I was when I was single. So I decided to choose for myself again.

I think 2022 is the first year where I would say "hey this was a pretty good year" (apart from the whole Seb thing. But not everything is about f1 sksksksk).
