After decades of excavations in Italy, archaeologists have discovered a villa that could have belonged to Augustus, the first emperor of Rome.
Since 2002, researchers from the University of Tokyo have been exploring Somma Vesuviana, an archaeological site north of Mount Vesuvius, the volcano that extinguished the ancient city of Pompeii in 79 C.E. Recently, these excavations revealed a structure destroyed by the same eruption.
Researchers think this site could be Augustus’ lost villa. According to the team, Roman sources say Augustus died in a villa north of the mountain in 14 C.E., but the building’s location has never been verified.
“There is a description that [the villa] was consecrated … but its existence has not been identified to this day,” says Mariko Muramatsu, leader of the university’s Somma Vesuviana excavation project, in a translated statement. “In recent years, our excavations have uncovered parts of buildings that were buried during the eruption of Mount Vesuvius in 79 C.E. This means that for the first time in this area, a building contemporary with the villa of Emperor Augustus has been found with scientific support.”

Okay, I know this is a listicle, and from Bored Panda, but it's kind of a cool listicle, for all that. It's not that it tells you anything new, because it doesn't. It's just cool. Oh, and it's my understanding (as always, please correct me if I'm wrong), but there is some doubt as to the authenticity of the Voynich manuscript. Some feel it could be of a much later date. It's a cool thing anyway. (And it's 'artefacts'. Just sayin'.)

An incredible discovery has been made at Thonis-Heracleion, an ancient sunken city off the coast of Egypt. A carved slab dating from the reign of Pharaoh Nectanebo was found, setting out the list of offerings made to neighboring temples. This discovery is of great importance to the history of ancient Egypt and helps us to better understand the religious practices of the time. It's amazing to think that this slab remained hidden in the depths of the sea for centuries, preserving its history and message until it was finally discovered by archaeologists. This discovery is a true proof of the importance of preserving historical and cultural heritage for future generations.

Excerpt:
According to a statement from Museum West Zealand, researchers recognized the ruler’s visage from the figure’s signature wavy hair and decorative crown of twisted ram horns.
The metal disc was made some 500 years after Alexander’s reign, and researchers speculate that it may be linked to the Roman Empire. According to the museum, Alexander was a “great role model” for Roman leaders—and a particularly influential figure for the emperor Caracalla, who reigned from 198 to 217 C.E.
The disc dates to “around the same time as Caracalla,” Oldenburger tells Live Science. “We know that he was completely obsessed with Alexander the Great and was interested and inspired by him, since he was the greatest conqueror of that time period.”
Caracalla was so consumed with him that he even “dressed with the same style and believed he was Alexander the Great reincarnated,” Oldenburger adds. “Caracalla is also the only emperor of his time to be depicted with a shield containing a portrait of Alexander the Great.”

"Diving into the Abyss: Unraveling the Mysteries of 'Atlantis, the Antediluvian World' by Ignatius Donnelly"
Tumblr media
In his timeless work, "Atlantis, the Antediluvian World," Ignatius Donnelly takes readers on an intellectual voyage through the corridors of history, mythology, and speculative science to explore the enigma of Atlantis. Published in 1882, Donnelly's magnum opus continues to captivate minds, challenging conventional beliefs about ancient civilizations and submerged realms.
The title itself sparks curiosity, suggesting an exploration of a world lost to time. Donnelly, a 19th-century polymath, weaves together a tapestry of evidence, folklore, and imagination, presenting a compelling case for the existence of a once-great civilization that predates recorded history.
The book unfolds like an archaeological adventure, with Donnelly delving into various ancient texts, mythologies, and geological phenomena to build his case for the existence of Atlantis. Drawing on works from Plato to ancient Hindu scriptures, he meticulously constructs a narrative that places Atlantis at the center of a global, advanced society.
Donnelly's bold hypotheses challenge readers to question the limits of human achievement in the ancient world. He proposes a sophisticated society with advanced technology, drawing parallels between the architectural feats of Egypt, Mexico, and the lost city of Atlantis. The author's arguments are not just a product of his imagination; they are backed by extensive research, albeit within the context of the knowledge available during his time.
The allure of "Atlantis, the Antediluvian World" lies in its ability to spark the imagination while grounding its theories in the available evidence of the era. Donnelly's exploration of geological anomalies, linguistic connections, and cultural parallels contributes to the mystique surrounding Atlantis.
However, the book is not without its critics. Skeptics argue that Donnelly's interpretations are speculative and at times overly optimistic. Nevertheless, the enduring appeal of his work lies in the profound impact it had on subsequent generations of scholars, scientists, and fiction writers who continued to explore the possibility of a lost civilization.
In conclusion, Donnelly's "Atlantis, the Antediluvian World" stands as a testament to the enduring fascination with the unknown depths of human history. Whether one approaches it as a work of speculative science or an engaging piece of historical literature, the book continues to beckon readers to contemplate the mysteries that lie beneath the surface of our understanding of ancient civilizations.
"Atlantis, the Antediluvian World," By Ignatius Donnelly is available in Amazon in paperback 21.99$ and hardcover 29.99$ editions.
Number of pages: 477

Rating: 8/10
