Artemisia has fond memories of their childhood. Even though they aren’t the heir, Artemisia was treated as an equal to Evander. The two learned the family business and were prepared for handling whatever was thrown their way gods forbid something happened to their parents. An idealistic childhood and teens would come crashing down the day Lord Voldemort decided an example needed to be made out of the Selwyn family. 

Months spent trying to convince the parents to get one of their children to join the ranks with no success were interrupted by Fenrir Greyback making an appearance. The most Artemisia can remember from the fateful day is their parents screaming their heads off and a searing pain in their neck from being bitten. The family was able to save Artemisia but couldn’t stop the monster that took over their child, leaving the eldest Selwyn with lycanthropy from dragging their feet to make a decision.

The warning was clear as day. Comply or face the consequences, and the Selwyn family faced the consequences with a promise of the Dark Lord doing worse to their heir if they continued to drag their feet. Gone were days of freedom for Artemisia to do as they pleased. The people that were once considered friends had pulled away, and the betrothal to Vincent Crabbe was called off. Artemisia tried to seem unaffected but being treated as lesser than others due to being a werewolf has done a number on them. Try as they may, there are only so many forced smiles to hide behind before the world properly comes crashing down around them.

Alecto Macnair - Everything seems to be going well for Alecto and Artemisia gets sad thinking about it. Alecto has their whole life ahead of them while Artemisia’s life got put on hold, dealing with the repercussions of the Selwyns having dragged their feet in picking a side. Artemisia can’t help but wonder how things would have differed if they had taken a similar approach in life to the one that Alecto uses.

Evander Selwyn - Artemisia’s rock. The two have been inseparable since Evander’s birth. Close as can be, Evander has been the only understanding relative in Artemisia’s life. Artemisia appreciates having someone to rely on instead of being met with disgust.

Vincent Crabbe - Betrothed to since toddlerhood, the couple was set to marry five summers after Vincent graduated from Hogwarts. It was believed that would be enough time to get Vincent’s feet wet at the Ministry before turning around to focus on starting a family. There was a mutual acceptance of their fate, and they got along well enough to hope they wouldn’t be miserable. The Crabbes have all but written the werewolf off at this point, and Artemisia can’t help but miss the inkling of friendship that flourished from Vincent having initially shared a similar fate to their own.

There had been whispers of Imperius that had frozen him in place with fear. What had he done? What had he forgotten? Was it better to know or not know?

He shuddered to think what his wife might tell him when she woke up. So he did not visit.

Aloof: came up empty with this one; feels like for the amount I write about Regulus I should have used the word aloof at least once, but no dice. In compensation, a second tell from Bagman (Ludo willfully helps the Death Eaters WIP)

“Fine, but can we get on with it? I have better things to do with my time.”

Rookwood’s mouth curved into a cold smile. “Do you? As far as I can tell, you’re the only one here without a job or any sort of obligations.”

Past: Me and Rosier Down by the Schoolyard (Regulus is sent to Durmstrang for his final year of Hogwarts after Walburga sees something she shouldn't)

"That isn't true. We've got Black, on the run from his sordid past."

"I am not on the run," Regulus said, fingers curling around the sleeves of his robes reflexively. "I have been banished. There is a difference."

Regulus sighed and stared out the window, chewing on his lower lip. He knew the question was coming; he was honestly surprised it had taken Evan this long to ask. That didn't make it any easier to answer, though.

Alecto wasn’t a planned or wanted child. They were a surprise addition to the heir that the Carrow’s needed. This would have frustrated Alecto more if Amycus hadn’t technically been the older child, and would have always been the heir. In actual fact, the whole situation enabled Alecto to live a rather chaotic, and enjoyable life. Of course, Alecto’s mother tried to tame them, seeing Alecto as a way of marrying into a respectable family and knowing the qualities that would prove successful. But Alecto was untamable. Their mother had practically given up by the time the twins got to Hogwarts. They had quite an unruly and chaotic reputation, and that was not going to change. 

Alecto didn’t immediately look for a job after graduating, managing to manipulate their father into buying an empty storefront in Kncokturn Alley. Alecto may not have been great with magic but they were able to manipulate people into dedicating their time to them. The storefront has been paid off, just waiting for Alecto to decide what to do with it.

The last thing on Alecto’s mind had been finding a spouse. But Walden Macnair was someone that they had just clicked with. As a pair, they have made a lethal combination within the Dark Lord’s' forces. Whilst Alecto had initially taken the mark just for the chaos it would enable them to have, they quickly found themselves falling in place alongside Walden and Bellatrix in pairings to do the Dark Lord biddings. For a person that had been born unwanted, it feels good to be up there on the top.

Walden Macnair - The marriage was a setup that no one in the pureblood community would have expected to balance out. Walden has proven to be a doting spouse and hides an intensity that can match Alecto’s. They make a great pair and have proven to be one of the stronger forces in the Dark Lord’s cause.

Bellatrix Lestrange - Bellatrix has taken Alecto under their wing, determined to mold the younger death eater into their prodigy. The pair is pretty lethal, balancing out each other’s strengths and weaknesses.

Artemisia Selwyn - Despite not being in the same year or house at Hogwarts, Alecto and Artemisia have been best friends since they were little. They were as inseparable as the Carrow twins were. Of course, that has all changed now. Alecto has pulled away a little, not because they truly want to but because it’s expected that they will. The Dark Lord used Artemisia as a warning and Alecto cannot pity them for that reason.

Ever since they can remember, Evander and Artemisia were treated as equals. Certainly, Evander was the heir but their parents hadn’t done much to stress the importance of that past only making a big deal out of things if the other pureblood parents did. It wasn’t entirely ideal since Evander wasn’t a fan of being put in the spotlight, but they knew how to act like they enjoyed the extra attention. Thick as thieves, Evander couldn’t have been happier to join Artemisia at Hogwarts. A four-year age gap did little to dull the relationship they had.

As the war worsened, Evander thought little of it despite knowing the family hadn’t picked a side. They weren’t in much of a rush to do so up until Artemisia was attacked. Being afraid of losing their sibling has left Evander latching onto Artemisia a little more than usual.

In order to take some of the weight of disappointment off Artemisia’s shoulders, Evander has taken the Dark Mark. Artemisia is unaware, and Evander hopes to keep things that way. It’s proving to be a bit of a struggle since Fenrir’s pack has been providing more assistance to the Dark Lord than before.

James Potter - Evander is suspicious of James. Lord Voldemort acquired the newly marked Death Eater in their ranks and Evander believes they can see through whatever mask Potter is hiding behind, knowing the mark wasn’t taken from James seeing the error of their ways.

Marlene McKinnon - There is something about Marlene that always manages to hold Evander’s interest. While the two don’t necessarily get along, Evander can appreciate the witty banter that comes about when they speak to each other.

Alecto Macnair - Evander cannot stand Alecto. A comment was made shortly after Artemisia’s attack and they weren’t able to tell if Alecto was joking or not. Either way, Evander took offense and hasn’t bothered to hide their annoyance toward Alecto.

The Prewetts come from a line of blood traitors, holding a prevalent spot on the Sacred 28 with little to no respect for what they stand for. Fabian has never been bothered by that fact, quite enjoying the freedom that accompanies coming from a family with known views against striving for a pureblood world. Fabian has seen people for who they are, knowing everyone is of worth regardless of blood status. It didn’t make them many friends with the purebloods, but they didn’t mind.

Fabian owes Hogwarts a thank you for allowing them an easy approach to getting to know people. They quickly found shared interests with muggleborns and half-bloods alike, not caring what the other purebloods thought about their relationships with others. Fabian was vocal about injustices during their first year, so it isn’t surprising that they have continued to push back against the beliefs the other purebloods have.

There was a time when Fabian considered giving up their job at Ministry, disheartened by seeing firsthand just how far the Dark Lord’s power spread. People that Fabian enjoyed working with were out of the job, and it didn’t seem fair that Fabian kept their position purely because of their blood.  Things are more corrupt than initially thought, and Fabian has a hope to take things down from the inside, knowing the Order can use the eyes and ears of someone like them.

Laurent Burke - Fabian’s interest in Laurent popped up the moment Arthur brought the shop up over dinner. While they don’t support the shop or much of anything to do with Knockturn Alley, Fabian has been keeping tabs on Laurent due to fearing something may happen to their favorite (and only) inlaw.

Artemisia Selwyn - The Prewetts and Selwyns were never close so it wouldn’t have been surprising if the family pulled away from the Selwyns altogether. They didn’t though, leaving Fabian struggling to prove they can be an ally or trusted friend.

James Potter - Fabian is worried about the younger pureblood. Something changed in how James usually carries themselves. While nothing has been explicitly said, Fabian has picked up on the slight change, leaving them making it clear they will be there to provide support if needed.

Gideon was never brave like Fabian or confident like Molly, and was content with being labeled the quiet one of the siblings. The three were thick as thieves while growing up and nothing will break the bond they still share. Although the Prewetts are purebloods, they grew up on the outskirts of pureblood society. Their status was good enough to get invited to parties yet bad enough that the hosts hoped the family didn’t show. Blood traitors are common along the Prewett line, and many presumed the younger generation would be trouble. Gideon didn’t mind that much growing up since they weren’t overly social with anyone outside their family.

Gideon happily would have stayed home with their parents at age eleven, but that was not an option. Hogwarts was the school the twins were sent to, and Gideon spent the majority of their time there in the Gryffindor common room. Adventuring only ever happened when Fabian or Molly was at their side. Large crowds of students were overwhelming to Gideon, so they preferred sticking to quieter spaces, often going to meals earlier than most for the sake of avoiding loud noises.

When Fabian joined the Order, Gideon was at their side wanting to fight for a better world for everyone. They quickly learned that they couldn’t just keep their head down, struggling with pushing aside the nerves that accompanied being surrounded by people at first. Gideon found their spot in the Order and is grateful for the support the cause has provided so far. Fighting has become all the more important now that people they grew close to have gone missing. Gideon is determined to ensure no one else gets put in a life-or-death situation and is willing to go down fighting for it.

Fabian Prewett - The twins have been best friends since birth, with Gideon as the quiet one and Fabian as the outspoken one. Fabian understands Gideon better than anyone else, sharing a bond that nobody can really understand.

Andromeda Tonks - Having initially believed Andromeda was on the Order’s side, Gideon is thrown off that Andromeda returned to the Blacks without much of a second thought. Andromeda’s change in heart doesn’t sit right with Gideon; they know it’s a matter of time before they accidentally question it.

Evander Selwyn - Despite having little in common, Gideon went out of their way to show support when the rest of the purebloods turned their backs on the family. The attack on Artemisia was horrendous, and Gideon knows they would have appreciated a shoulder to lean on if Fenrir targeted their family instead.

Vincent was raised knowing only to speak when spoken to. It was a rule of their parents that they kept to heart and enabled them to be a fly on the wall. They haven’t really made much effort to get to know their spouse beyond producing an heir and have no desire to. 

Artemisia Selwyn - The sudden decision from their parents that the marriage was off has not stopped the lingering feelings that Vincent has. They have to stay away, but Vincent misses the flourishing friendship that was developing between them and Artemisia. Artemisia’s suddenly being pulled away is something they are still struggling to come to terms despite being married to someone else.
