Checkmate (BASED ON CREED III)
Riri Williams x Black Reader
Summary: It's Riri's last fight before her official retirement and she wanted to end by taking the heavyweight champion title from her rival named Nicki Conlan daughter of your cousin Creed's former rival Ricky Conlan. In the midst of this quest, it seems that she is having trouble finding her opponent's weak spot until now.

Riri was getting her ass beat. She would get a few hits in every once in a while but it wasn't enough to win the rounds. The hits she was making weren't enough down Nicki who has been in this game for years. Riri knocked out plenty of people 16 to be exact but this was nothing like those fights. This was extreme and it was only gonna get harder.
BOOM
"A heavy uppercut from Conlan put Williams on her knees!" The Announcer Shouted. Her ear was ringing from such a force and her lungs were heavy as if they were going to crash. "ONE, TWO, THREE" The referee counted snapping her out the dizziness as she got up. "FOUR!" "Im good." "FIVE" "I SAID I"M GOOD DAMN" Riri shook those punches off as she the referee put her back in.
As soon as the bell rung, Conlan came swinging connecting at least seven hits before the bell rung. The last one was so strong that Riri's eye was bleeding. "Choose the wrong fighter brote(bud)" She glanced at you as you shook a bit from being scared. 'I'm good baby' she mouthed as you swallowed the worries in your throat.
"Cuzzo your eye is bleeding. You keep making loose moves like that and we'll be scooping you up piece by piece. Riri rolled her eyes brushing off her injury. "I'm good bro. Ain't nobody scared of a lil contact here and there" Creed sighed at her stubbornness. "Dodge her left hook and wait for her to throw the right one. She's gonna overthrow and when she does I need you to go in there and smash her." Riri nodded at her coach's instructions.
DING! DING! DING!
"Round 1 was a wake up call for the young fighter Riri Williams. But, after a discussion with Creed, She comes in for more." The announcer speaks once again. BOOM "Hard uppercut from Conlan followed by a left hook" Dodge, HOOK. Riri throws a clean left hook to Nicki's face cutting her cheek a bit. BOOM BOOM BOOM! "Riri and Conlan go toe-to-toe both landing clean hits as they push on to each other." "Go RI YOU GOT IT!" You cheer on. "Double hook Riri!"Creed shouts. Riri managed to hit her twice before the bell rang. The fighters push on to each other talking a huge amount of trash. "You bleed just like me nigga!" Riri spat. "That ain't shit lil girl" The coaches pull the fighter bringing them back to their corners. "That's what I like to see cuzzo" Creed gives Riri some water to wash out her blood in a bucket. "Look you're a threat to her. She's gonna be after everything you have and I need you to be ready okay?" Riri nodded sniffling a bit.
DING! DING! DING!
Round 3 had started and Creed wasn't kidding. Nicki came running throwing hits that would definitely cause bruises later. Every single time Riri would dodge or block one shot Nicki would connect 3 three more. "KEEP YO HANDS UP BAE" You yell trying to help but it didn't affect her at all. Jab, left hook, right hook the punches just kep coming until the round ended. "Things aren't looking so good for Williams after that round" The announcer voice rang through the speaker for the thousandth time today.
Round 11
Both of the fighters were tired and Nicki was ahead in points which means Riri wasn't winning but not far away from it either. At this point, both of the fighters had bad injuries. Conlan had bruises all over her body and cuts while Riri had some cuts and a swollen eye not to mention the one that was cut. Riri connected 3 hooks onto Nicki's body making her stumble. Even though Riri was making these great shots, Nicki wasn't going to let it go just like that and that was really bad for Riri.

Riri was getting hit with all types of combos and she was barely even dodging them. Her body was slowly giving out and that wasn't benefiting her at all. Just when she thought she was making progress, BOOM... "Williams drops to the floor! A clean knockout from Conlan. Tears fall down from your eyes as you feel the wave of emotions overcome you. This couldn't be the end it just couldn't.
2023 CHICAGO 9:45 PM
"Jeez a swift combo from Conlan right out of the gate! Is Conlan looking good or is Williams just looking bad? The announcer entertained the audience as Riri and her rival Nicki Conlan fought. Jab, hook, uppercut. The same three moves, yet every time it was thrown at her she still couldn't dodge it. Riri was getting frustrated and you could see that even from the sidelines.
"If Williams keeps this up her whole career will end with another loss from the same person" 'Jesus Christ do these people ever shut the fuck up' you thought. Once again, Riri was hit with the same three piece that Conlan was delivering. "mm okay same ol' Williams. Ain't nun change" Conlan smirked at the stress she pursued onto Riri. Riri took a jab first only to get blocked. They both started recieving contact until Riri was put in a corner.
Riri managed to land a jab into Nicki's jaw making some room between the two of them but that didn't even seem to faze Nicki at all. Jab, hook, uppercut once again only even harder. Jab, hook, uppercut once more knocking Riri into the ropes. You jumped out of your seat sweating as you bit your nails nervously. The fighters were swinging back and forth though Conlan was causing more damage than Riri did this whole fight. Jab, hook, dodge? Riri escaped the dangerous combo after being hit multiple times. She noticed this very much. So much in fact that she found a weak spot.
DING! DING! DING!
The round was over obviously going to Conlan since she made the most contact in between that amount of time. "The next round is gonna hurt Williams. Get ready" Riri rolled her eyes walking over to her corner and sitting down with her Coach Adonis Creed. "Ri if you don't get yo head in the game. She beating you worse last time!" She looked over to you and winked as a smirk crept onto her face.
"Oh so you smiling? Am I missing something?" Your Coach asked getting worried. "Yeah bro. Checkmate" You could tell what she said even from where you were. She found it. She found the spot. The same spot that Creed found in his boxing era. You body relaxed just a little still remembering that there is a chance something could go wrong.
"Oh checkmate? You wanna be me so bad it's crazy. Go checkmate yo ass a damn knockout. And please don't get whooped" You chuckled at his antics. "I ain't never been scared of no contact" He put her mouthpiece in her mouth and wiped her down to get ready for the next round. "She looked back over to you giving a thumbs up to you. You smiled lightly returning the thumbs up.
DING! DING! DING!
The next round began as the crowd roared. "Since Williams hasn't been winning rounds the only thing that can save her is a knockout" The announcer starts back up with their commentary making you even more nervous. Dodge, jab, jab Riri connected with Conlan's lower body making her wince a bit. "C'mon nigga" Riri taunted.
"C'mon Nicki, finish the job!" Her father yelled from the sidelines. Jab, hook, uppercut again. She had got Riri again but it was becoming more tolerable. After going back and forth so much it finally clicked. The world was going in slow motion for Riri calming her. It was either she strikes now or never. Dodge, Jab, hook. Conlan stumbles a bit from the combo. "Nah don't run" BOOM BOOM BOOM... "Conlan plummets on the floor what a combo." Nicki squirmed on the ground trying to get up but to no avail.
"THREE, FOUR, FIVE!" Once it got to 5 you were up on your seat biting your knuckle a bit harder each time the number went up.
"TEN! RIRI WILLIAMS IS THE NEW CHAMP!"
You yell in joy running in the ring to hug your girl. "Oh my gosh I knew you could do it!" You kissed her passionately pulling away just to get pulled back in. "Mm- okay Ri your sweaty as hell" "Whatever" You both laugh as the interviewers throw questions at both of you.
"So Riri, how does it feel to be the new Heavyweight Champ?"
"Perfect"

Summary: When the Wurst comes to NYC to get some tech updates with the help of Maddie, worlds come clashing together. It's a bit awkward, a bit weird, and Sofia's not down with this concept of holograms popping into rooms whenever they want to. Which Margaret finds hilarious.

Now while Pete had never even let Sofia meet 53\/3N , it didn’t take much for Sofia to admit technology had managed to evolve past her. That threshold was met when she arrived at Maddie’s place to hang out with her & Pete, and a hologram stared her in the face.
Sofia had just hung up her coat, kicking off her Louboutins and walked into the living room area of Maddie and Pete’s apartment when a full person seemed to appear out of nowhere. So she punched it- or rather- attempted to punch it. When her hand seemed to pass straight through it, she turned to Pete and asked, “why are video game enemies spawning in your livin’ room?!”
Pete, who’d just returned from the kitchen with a fresh pot of tea, began to laugh. “You just tried to punch Maddie’s friend, Margaret.”
She turned back to the figure that had stood up to her fists and watched as the woman crossed her arms and cocked an eyebrow. “Hello Maddie’s friend Margaret. I feel like I should say sorry but you did spawn into a room without warning and I do feel justified in my actions.” She took a step back to inspect the hologram a little more. Margaret seemed to sit in a large office chair, wearing a business suit and holding what seemed to be a mug labelled “daddy”.
Margaret shrugged and sipped from her mug. “I guess that’s fair. Hey Pete, I like your shirt.”
Pete looked down at his chest, finding one of his usual fishnet shirts. “Thanks.” He put down the large teapot he was still holding and gestured to Sofia. “This is my friend Sofie, by the way.”
Bewildered, Sofia moved to the couch. In thirty seconds she’d tried to fight Maddie’s friend, who was then revealed to be a hologram, who seemed utterly dismissive of her? Which felt at the very least a little insulting since Margaret herself was very pretty.
Pete noticed her silence. “Hey, are you okay?” He bumped his knee into hers.
She scratched her head. “I think technology just jumpscared me. Can I have some tea?”
As Pete poured two cups of tea, Margaret leaned forward and put her mug somewhere out of sight. “As much as I’m enjoying watching two buds just hang out in their living room, can either one of you get Maddie for me? I need a favour.”
Behind Margaret’s chair, a red haired woman with a laser eye and a gun hand appeared. “Miss Margaret, Barry’s been asking if- oh, who are your friends?”
Sofia pressed her hands to her eyes. “Hey, Pete? I think I’ve lost it. Whatever the fuck it was.” She lowered her hands and stood up, to see if it’d normalise the event a little bit. Instead, she watched both women eye her for a second before turning their attention to each other. Feeling the blood rush to her face, she took inventory of her outfit. Tight black jeans with ripped knees and a cropped leopard-print sweater that hugged her biceps. At least she had nothing to worry about in those terms.
“Hey Sid, can this wait? I need to have a quick chat with some friends first,” Margaret said as she wrapped an arm around Sid’s waist.
“Of course. You can just tell Riva when you’re done.” With a quick wave of her gun arm, Sid disappeared from sight.
Sofia blinked twice and shook her head. “I’m goin’ to find Maddie before you do somethin’ weirder.”
~~~
The second time Margaret appeared, it was inside Sofia’s apartment during movie night. Esther firebolted the hologram, leaving a scorched hole in the wall through which Ricky’s axe flew. Pete jumped so bad he became a potted plant and Maddie laughed so hard she cried.
“You! What are you fuckin’ doing in my home?!”
Margaret looked bewildered, taking in the chaos she’d created. “Um. Maddie?”
“Yes?”
“I think maybe Sofia’s right and you should put a warning on my hologram.”
“Maybe?!” Sofia repeated. “You caused a hole to appear in my apartment!”
Esther and Ricky exchanged a sheepish look before starting the mending process. It was pure luck that her neighbours hadn’t been home.
Maddie promised Sofia that she’d put a warning on the hologram before retreating to Sof’s bedroom to discuss whatever Margaret had to talk about.
With a quiet poof, Pete returned to human form and groaned. “Why do I feel dry and sandy?”
“‘Cause your girlfriend’s friends with a maniac who loves to jumpscare us.” Sofia pulled Pete up from the couch and into the kitchen to get some water.
Later that night, as Sofia flopped onto her bed, she got a phone call from a weird number. She wasn’t planning on picking up but then the words “PLEASE PICK UP I’M TRYING TO BE NICE” appeared in her room.
Muttering a curse, Sofia picked up her phone. “Haven’t you done enough today? And also can you see me right now? How does this hologram thing work?”
Margaret laughed. “Alright, Sofie. No, I can’t see you right now. Would you like me to?”
Sofia mouthed a curse as she felt the blush rise to her cheeks again.
“As for how it works- long story short; it’s basically like a phone call without having to pick up. I could’ve just holo’d you but I felt that you may attempt to kill me again.”
Sitting up, Sofia replied, “just holo me.”
Within seconds the form of Margaret appeared in her bedroom, this time wearing a tight dark green skirt and a white button up. She sat crooked in her chair with her legs swung over one of the arms as she held a phone between her fingers. “Hi.”
Sofia raised her eyebrows. “To what do I owe this honour?” she deadpanned.
“I wanted to apologise.” She held her hands up in mock surrender. “Maddie and I have been friends for a while so usually I can manage to text her before I holo in. But lately we’ve been talking about some major upgrades to our ship that she could do, so it’s a little time sensitive.”
Sofia decided to leave the whole ship thing for later, she could just ask Maddie about that. “For how long have you been able to just appear in my apartment?”
“Maddie brought the device with her. It’s over there, near your PJs.” Margaret pointed between Sof’s rumpled sheets. “She left it here because I told her I wanted to apologise to you but I guess she forgot to give you a heads up.”
Sofia picked up the small black device, flipping it over in her hands. It had two obvious buttons, a red and a green one. She pressed the red one and Margaret disappeared, laughed, then pressed the green one.
Margaret reappeared looking a little ruffled. “Hey!”
“You deserved that and you fuckin’ know it.” Sofia grinned.
“That’s fair,” she sighed. “Anyway, I just wanted to say I’m sorry for ruining some of your nights. After Sunday I won’t be popping in unannounced anymore, I promise.”
“Sunday?”
“We’re coming in tomorrow for a few days so Maddie can help make those upgrades.”
Sofia leaned forward. “You’re going to be here tomorrow.” A plan was forming in her mind.
“Yes. Do you have any recommendations while we’re in NYC?”
“Just one. If you pop in unannounced in real life you are going to get punched.”
Margaret laughed. “Okay, feisty.” She glanced at something out of Sofia’s view. “I should let you go now, it’s getting late. You can add me to your contacts if you’d like.”
“Uhuh, I’ll call you if I ever need… a ship.” Sofia grabbed the holo remote. “I’m leaving this in my living room since you can pop in unannounced.”
“Why, got a booty call coming over?” She wiggled her eyebrows.
Sofia pulled her hair out of a ponytail and ran her hands through it. “No, the only piece of ass calling me this time of night is you.”
“I don’t hear you complaining about the view.” Margaret leaned forward, grinning.
“Alright babe, I’m leaving you in the living room,” Sofia said- though she couldn’t help watching the way Margaret’s shirt left a nice view. “If you need anything, you should probably call Maddie because I’m no tech guru.” She got up and walked the device to her living room.
“What time do you get up?”
“Don’t make me take out the battery.”
“Alright, fine.” Margaret leaned back. “Sweet dreams.”
“Yeah, yeah I’ll ask Pete. Goodnight.” Sofia pressed the red button and sighed as the room went dark. “I don’t even understand what I’m dealin’ with,” she muttered to herself.
~~~
As promised, the giant hot dog shaped ship docked early the next morning. Because it wasn’t a regular ship and actually a fucking spaceship they decided to land it in the yard of Sofia’s monastery. She had been involved in that decision, mainly because the backup idea was trying to cram it into Gramercy or landing it in central park. And Sofia was not going to let Em suffer like that.
The rest of her order looked mildly distressed as the Wurst landed and a collection of mismatched people came out. Sofia shook her head and returned to her office. She’d have to wait until all the hubbub was over to get her revenge.
When part of the ship’s crew had set out to explore NYC, Sofia left her office again. She’d taken the time to cast Pass Without Trace, and smiled to herself as she easily slipped into the ship. It didn’t take her long to find Margaret’s office, where the woman was sitting in her office chair going over some paperwork.
Sofia pulled the chair back. “Hello.”
Margaret jumped three feet into the air, yelling what Sof could only assume to be intergalactic curses as paper went flying everywhere. Breathing heavy, she turned her chair around and looked at Sofia with wide eyes. “Why the fuck would you do that?”
“Revenge, babe.” She grinned. “It’s what you deserved.”
Rubbing her chest, Margaret said, “I guess that was fair. Can you help me pick up these papers now?”
Together, they reorganised Marge’s hellscape of files and stacked it neatly on her desk.
Margaret eyed Sofia’s workout clothes with zero subtlety. The tight leopard print leggings and sleeveless top did exactly what Sof wanted it to. “You look different today.”
“That should be my line. I have to be honest, I didn’t think you owned sweats.” Sofia reached out and tugged on one of the strings of her hoodie. The basketball shorts were an interesting choice.
“I don’t have any calls today, nor do I have to go outside so why would I dress up?”
“For me.”
“For you?” Margaret sat up in her chair.
“Are you honestly going to try to convince me you didn’t think it’d be a little funny to try and surprise me?”
Margaret toyed with the hair tie around her wrist. “Okay, true. But I wasn’t going to do it in the morning, and I would’ve changed first.”
Sofia smiled. “Well, since you’re already dressed like this I think it’s time for you to be ambushed by my work.”
“What do you do exactly?” Marge looked around the room with concern, as if more Sofias could pop out any moment.
“I’m a monk.” Sofia pulled Margaret out of her chair and pushed her down the halls. “You are going to check out one of my classes.”
“Is it meditation?”
“Fuck, no.”
~~~
Margaret lay on the floor of the dojo, ignoring Sofia’s outstretched hand. “No, I've had enough of this. This is not an intermediate self defence class. This is a Sofia offence class for me.” She pulled up her hoodie to wipe the sweat off her face, too tired to enjoy the way Sofia’s focus slipped.
“I have to be honest, I thought you’d be better at this.” She tugged at the end of her ponytail.
“What part of tech girlie do you not understand? Battles are when I do my online banking.” Marge propped herself up on her elbows.
“Oh most of it, probably. I didn’t think your girl with the gun arm was doing all the lifting for you.”
“Sid?”
Sofia nodded.
“We live on a spaceship. My average movement is generally pretty limited.” She reached out and pulled herself up via Sofia’s arm. “While I appreciate you showing me your work-” she squeezed Sof’s bicep. “I can promise you that if you’d let me watch I would’ve been much more appreciative.”
“Alright, babe.” She rolled her eyes but didn’t pull away. “Let’s take a shower and I’ll make it up to you.”
“In the shower?”
Sofia punched Marge in the arm.
After her shower, Sofia reached into the back of her locker. She always kept one more upscale outfit at the monastery, in case they’d have visitors or investors. Margaret seemed like the kind of woman who’d appreciate her dressing up and as much as annoying her was fun, she’d only be there for a few days and Sofia was not about to let time go to waste. She pulled on the neat black trousers and red sleeveless top, adding her Louboutins as a finishing touch. Dressed for success, she set off towards the spaceship again.
Margaret looked a lot happier in her business casual suit, the workout clearly not sinking into her muscles yet. She was, however, not done complaining about it. “I’m going to need about 10 cups of coffee to bring my energy back up again,” she said as they walked through the streets of NYC.
“Ah, you’re one of those. Well I’ll buy you coffee, I can’t promise you 10 cups.” Sofia shot her a look as they rounded a corner. “Mostly because I think you’ll spontaneously explode.”
Marge followed Sofia into a small corner cafe as she replied, “nah. That’d be too embarrassing of a way to die.”
“How do you take your coffee?” Sof gestured to the blackboard up on the wall, where many different coffee and teas were written out in neat handwriting. On the right side it showed several cookies, cakes, as well as their allergy information.
“Matcha latte, please.”
“You allergic to anything?”
Margaret raised her eyebrows but replied no. “Not unless you have material not from Earth here.”
“I mean, we got you now.” Sofia gestured for her to find them a place to sit while she ordered.
After a moment of looking around, Marge decided on a booth against the back wall, where the walls were decorated with famous authors from the Harlem Renaissance. At least, that’s what the little labels said- Margaret didn’t know much about American history. But the picture of Nella Larssen was wonderful.
“Here you go.” Sofia slid Margaret’s matcha latte across the table, along with one of the cafe’s homemade chocolate chip cookies on a colourful plate. She sat down on the opposite side of the booth and smiled.
“Thanks.” Marge picked up her mug. “Hey, is this a date?”
Sofia opened her mouth then paused, something fluttering in her chest. “Why do you ask?”
“So I know how to behave.”
“Is what I’ve seen from you not date-behaviour?” Sofia laughed.
Margaret laughed, her cheeks turning pink. “I’m less of a butt when I know I have a shot.” She tilted her head and looked at Sofia from under her lashes.
Sofia leaned forward. “Yeah, you do.” She sipped her coffee before saying, “yes. Yes, it is a date, if you’re cool with that.”
“Good. Then let me start by saying that you are so beautiful.” She took Sofia’s free hand, intertwining their fingers.
Sofia coughed and sputtered, setting down her coffee before she could choke. Squeezing Margaret’s hand, she pretended that hadn’t thrown her off balance. “Thanks. I’ve never seen someone look both so professional and so mischievous in a suit.”
“There’s gotta be time for both.”
The two women spent the next couple of hours getting to know each other in a way only two people from completely different worlds could. Hopping from topic to topic, telling stories that no one else could possibly understand. After a while, Marge joined Sofia on her side of the booth, pressing her knee to Sof’s and playing with her black curls.
“So…” Sofia bit her lower lip. “Do you think y’all will come back to Earth sometime?” She tapped her fingers on Margaret’s forearm.
“Yes,” she replied without a second thought. “Yes, if I have anything to say about it.”
“Cool.” She took hold of Margaret’s collar, pulling her closer until she could feel her breath on her lips. “I don’t want to wait around.”
Margaret craned her neck trying to close the distance but Sofia pulled back slightly, grinning. “Now who’s making me wait, hm?” She whispered, her eyes on Sofia’s lips, placing her hands on Sofia’s thigh.
“What can I say, you’re cute when you want something.” She moved her hand to the back of Margaret’s neck and kissed her.
She pulled back for a moment, savouring the feeling of Sofia’s lips on hers. Then, grinning, she pushed Sofia against the back of the booth and kissed her again.
Sofia wasn’t sure how she’d ended up here, making out in the back of a booth with a woman from space, but she didn’t think it mattered. The people who understood her best were always those from similarly weird and wild worlds themself. And for her, that was Margaret. There was a form of simplicity in the connection- one where they could ask any questions they needed to and express any feelings they wanted to. So when Margaret asked her if she wanted to get out of there, she grinned and nodded.
Together, they set off for Sofia’s apartment.
"Thomasine & Bushrod" (1974) is a romance-western film written by Max Julien and directed by Gordon Parks Jr. The movie is a spin on the 1967 classic, "Bonnie & Clyde." Julien and Vonetta McGee team up in an underrated film that ventures into the Wild West, where these two lovers commit a streak of crimes over four years. A year removed from his iconic role as Goldie in the 1973 film, "The Mack," Julien continues to expand his versatility as an actor and writer. However, this was Julien's last role until 1997, when he played Uncle Fred in "How to be A Player."
McGee was in the prime of her career as she had established herself as a well-respected actress. The further I look into her career and roles, the more I am impressed. She was a phenomenal individual and easily one of the best actresses of the 1970s. Her role as Thomasine was authentic. She identified well with her character and delivered on multiple levels throughout the film.
Juanita Moore and Glynn Turman also appear in the movie, adding to a remarkable and dynamic cast. But, unfortunately, like many black films that make films that spin on other major Hollywood productions, their budgets are not comparable. However, this film is a solid adaption, which also took advantage of the booming blaxploitation era of cinema. It's an entertaining movie, so I recommend it to you.
Director: Gordon Parks Jr. Writer: Max Julien Composed by: Coleridge-Taylor Perkinson Title Song: "Thomasine & Bushrod" by Arthur Lee
Starring Max Julien, Vonetta McGee, George Murdock, Glynn Turman, Juanita Moore, Joel Fluellen, Jason Bernard, Jackson D. Kane, Bud Conlan, Kip Allen, Ben Zeller
Storyline While jailed, Thomasine (Vonetta McGee) sees a wanted poster of her boyfriend, Bushrod (Max Julien). She tracks him down, and they rekindle their relationship together. However, after Bushrod kills a notorious murderer, U.S. Marshal Bogardie (George Murdock) steps in and attempts to arrest Bushrod until Thomasine intervenes. Now, fugitives of the law, Thomasine and Bushrod, go on a bank robbing spree while the U.S. Marshall tracks them down.
Princess Grace visits the family
Kelly clan gets together for dinner at Bala
By RUTH SELTZER (The Philadelphia Inquirer - December 20, 1977)
Princess Grace was in Philadelphia for a little more than 24 hours. She arrived here by car from New York on Sunday afternoon and she returned to Manhattan yesterday afternoon.
We stopped off at the Bala Golf Club on Sunday to say hello to Grace. The Kelly family got together for dinner there. Princess Grace arrived at 6:30 p.m., and we chatted with her then.
Princess Grace told us that Prince Albert, now a student at Amherst College, would be flying across the Atlantic with her on Wednesday. "We shall be in Monaco for Christmas" she said.
She said she would be busy getting ready for Princess Caroline's wedding. When we mentioned the rumors that Caroline's engagement to French business leader Philippe Junot was over, Princess Grace said, "The wedding will take place in late June. Those rumors are perfectly ridiculous. They got going because Philippe was seen without Caroline. There's absolutely no basis for the rumors. Caroline didn't go to parties because we have been in mourning. Caroline's grandmother - my husband's mother - died."
Fifteen members of the Kelly family gathered for Sunday night's dinner at the Bala Golf Club. Seated around the table were Princess Grace and her mother Mrs. John B. Kelly, who celebrated her 79th birthday on Dec. 13; Councilman John B. Kelly Jr.; Mrs. Margaret Kelly Conlan; and Mr. and Mrs. Donald Caldwell LeVine (she is Princess Grace's sister, Lizanne). There, too, were eight of Princess Grace's nieces and nephews.
The nieces and nephews at the dinner were Grace and Christopher LeVine; Mary Lee Jones (she is Mrs. Conlan's daughter), and five of Councilman Kelly's six children - Susan, who took the picture that accompanies today's column; Maura; Liz, who is now a student at Harvard University; John B. Kelly 3d, whose nickname is J.B., and Margaret, whose nickname is Buttons. Missing was Ann Kelly, who is working in London.
Before going to dinner, Princess Grace spent some time with her mother in Germantown. Dr. Robert E. Cooke, the new president of the Medical College of Pennsylvania, and the college's Anne (Mrs. Thomas) Insinger talked with Princess Grace there. Princess Grace is a member of the National Board of the medical college.
Princess Grace was driven from New York to Philadelphia by her good friend Maree (Mrs. Joseph S.) Rambo. Mr. Rambo (Bud) was at the wheel when Princess Grace went back to Manhattan yesterday afternoon. With them in the Rambo car were Mrs. Rambo and their daughter Louise Rambo, who is a senior at the Purnell School in New Jersey.
Published: December 11, 2019
NEW YORK CITY (Dec. 11, 2019) — The fighters were all business on the press conference dais. The best triple-header of the 2019 boxing calendar didn't need any pomp and circumstance.
Saturday evening at Madison Square Garden (ESPN, 9 p.m. ET), Terence "Bud" Crawford (35-0, 26 KOs) will defend his WBO welterweight world title against Egidijus "Mean Machine" Kavaliauskas (21-0-1, 17 KOs), while the co-feature will see IBF lightweight world champion Richard Commey (29-2, 26 KOs) hoping to avoid the takeover in Teofimo Lopez (14-0, 11 KOs).
The ESPN opener will see Irish sensation Michael "Mick" Conlan (12-0, 7 KOs) hoping to turn back amateur nemesis Vladimir Nikitin (3-0, 0 KOs) in a 10-rounder at featherweight. Nikitin defeated Conlan twice as an amateur, including in their 2016 Olympic quarterfinal bout, a decision that sparked international controversy.
At Wednesday's final press conference, this is what the fighters had to say.
Terence Crawford
"I'm starting to get used to fighting on these big stages, so it ain't nothing new to me. This week is going to be a great, spectacular show. I am well-prepared for whatever he brings to the table, and I'm sure they know that as well."
"Nothing really changed between me and {trainer Brian McIntyre}. We're a team. Iron sharpens iron. We added some more great fighters to the team. We're pushing each other each and every day in camp. If I'm tired, {Maurice Hooker} will talk to me, 'Come on little guy, you tired?' And that just motivates each and every one of us to go that extra mile. Either we're running, sparring, hitting the bag. Everything is a competition when we're in the camp."
"I'm not focused on no other opponent besides the opponent that's in front of me. My goal is to make sure I get the victory come this weekend, and that's the only person I'm focused on now. Anyone else is talk. It goes in one ear and out the other. He's young, hungry and I'm not taking him lightly."
Bob Arum
"They're all good fights. The Teofimo-Commey fight, bookmakers have made that a 50-50 fight, so that's obviously of great interest. And the other two fights are not walkovers. They're tough, tough matches. Terence is worth the price of admission by himself. He is pound-for-pound the best fighter in the world, and everybody will have an opportunity to watch him fight a very tough Lithuanian in Kavaliauskas, who has fought for us for many years and is a tough, tough Eastern European fighter."
"Mick Conlan gets his chance for revenge. You all know the story. When most people thought he'd won his fight in the Olympics and Nikitin was given the nod, now they have a chance in professional boxing for revenge, a rematch. And that will be of interest to fans all over the world."
On Commey-Lopez
"Some young man who has three of the lightweight titles and is looking to fight for a fourth will be on hand. He's coming in on Friday to watch this match. Vasiliy Lomachenko will be here. A lot at stake in this Lopez fight with Commey. Both great fighters."
Egidijus "Mean Machine" Kavaliauskas
"Crawford was on my mind from the start of training camp in June. So every day was Crawford, Crawford, Crawford. My mindset is good. I'm happy for this fight. When this fight was made officially, I was super happy. I was smiling all day. I want to fight the best, and we're fighting in the Mecca of Boxing."
"We started in June, but we started light. Still, all the tactics, everything was about how Crawford fights, which stance {he'll use}. Sparring, we had lots of different guys, southpaw, orthodox, guys in different stances. And the training camp, [we worked on} speed, power, sparring, technique and tactics, all in this five, six months."
"Going straight ahead to Crawford is not an option because he's too smart and he showed in his last fight that he's smart in the ring. So, yeah, we'll work on my combinations. We don't want to go very wild at him."
Richard Commey
"2019 has been a great year. I've worked so hard coming from Ghana. You know how it is. To get to this stage, man, just an amazing feeling."
"How many boxers have come from Ghana with a chance to fight in {The Garden} in the co-main event...God bless us, and I’m ready to retain my title. There is no way I'm going to lose."
Teofimo Lopez
"It's a blessing. It's a breathtaking moment. It's just something I have to visualize and just know that, 22 years old, I have a great opportunity here to do a lot. I'm excited, man. What better way to finish off the year than fight in the Mecca of Boxing, Madison Square Garden, for my first world title, in New York? This is a moment right here."
On the criticism from his last fight against Masayoshi Nakatani
"I think everybody needs something like that. I needed that. Everything happens for a reason. I take everything they try to throw at me negatively and turn it into a positive. You can't faze me. You can't bring me down. I'm here for a reason. Teofimo is doing what he's doing come Saturday night. We're going to go out there and take over. I have vengeance in me. I'm holding that, holding everything. I want to shut everyone up the best way I can, and that's doing what I do best."
"God didn't bring us this far for nothing. I didn't come out here just to talk my smack and not back it up. We're gonna do what we have to do. Richard Commey is a world champion for a reason. And we know that it's going to be a great and exciting fight."
Michael Conlan
"This is straight business for me. There is no personal or emotional attachment to it. Vladimir, obviously he beat me in 2013 when I moved up to bantamweight. 2016, he got the decision, but he knows deep down he needs to prove something because his career will always be remembered for losing to me in the Olympics. He's gotta prove something Saturday night. I don't believe he will. I've prepared fully, and I've been training for 14 or 13 weeks for this camp. I'm ready for anything Saturday night."
"It's very fitting for me to be boxing here, having this rematch in MSG. This is where I re-started my boxing career after the Olympics, and this is where I'll close the chapter. We'll put everything in the past and we'll stop talking about him because I'm fed up with it. I just want to take care of business and move on."
Vladimir Nikitin
"I don't have to prove anything to anyone. I won two bouts against him in the amateurs and, right now, this is just another big step in my professional career."
"I fought my last fight here at the {Hulu Theater} at Madison Square Garden. I've been in the arena. This is the next step in my professional career. I am preparing for every fight {the same}. It doesn't matter."
"I'm ready for 10 rounds. We'll see what will happen in the ring."
Bob Arum Needs to Test Terence Crawford, Shakur Stevenson
Terence "Bud" Crawford made boxing look pretty easy against challenger Felix Diaz, forcing a stoppage before the start of the 11th round on Saturday night.
When he wasn't toying with Diaz, tapping him on the head and making faces at the former Olympic gold medalist, the WBC and WBO super lightweight champion was jabbing his way to an easy win, splicing in the occasional uppercut until Diaz's eyes had swelled shut and his corner threw in the towel.
"I barely got hit," said Crawford (31-0, 22 KOs), who out-landed Diaz, 193-69, according to CompuBox. "I was in total control. I had no problems."
The business of boxing, on the other hand, looked much more difficult.
Only Madison Square Garden's lower bowl was open on Saturday. And of the 8,026 tickets that were sold, several thousand were purchased by fans of Jonathan Maicelo, the veteran Peruvian lightweight who was seemingly in control of his fight against Ray Beltran before being knocked unconscious in the second round and being taken out on a stretcher.
Another significant contingent of fans came from nearby Newark to see hometown hero Shakur Stevenson, who easily improved to 2-0 by earning a first-round stoppage against Carlos Gaston Suarez.
"It was amazing," the 19-year-old Olympic silver medalist said. "Came out, saw some faces that I already knew. I was in my home town. It was an amazing feeling, seeing all the fans that are supporting me."
And while Crawford certainly drew the majority of the fans on Saturday, he didn't make an impact at the box office that's commensurate with his talent. The reality is that Crawford's presence at 140 pounds would be like LeBron James playing in the Adriatic Basketball Association. (Or LeBron James playing against the Boston Celtics in the Eastern Conference Finals, for that matter)
Even Crawford seemed eager to move up to welterweight, where many of the sport's biggest names make a living.
"[I want Manny] Pacquiao," Crawford said after the win, referring to the WBO welterweight champion. "That's the only fight out there that we are really looking for."
Crawford, however, still has one more errand at 140 pounds: a unification bout with IBF and WBA super lightweight champion Julius Indongo.
"Indongo is here," Crawford said. "He came to my fight. Let's get it on, Indongo, wherever you are at. Keith Thurman? Whoever. I'll fight anybody."
Thurman, the WBC and WBA welterweight champion, just had elbow surgery and is done for the year, so he's not an option.
Pacquiao, who Crawford has been talking about for years, is also promoted by Bob Arum's Top Rank; but that doesn't mean a fight between the two is on the immediate horizon. The Filipino senator is set to defend his WBO title against Australia's Jeff Horn in July.
That likely leaves Crawford with a unification bout against Namibia's Indongo.
"I'm looking to do that this summer," Arum said Saturday. "We're gonna reach out to Indigo, who has the two other belts. Like to do a fight for four belts. Then once he gets all four belts, he's gonna fight Pacquiao."
And if Indongo can't make a deal with Crawford, the alternately jovial and cantankerous Arum will find someone else for Bud to fight before he gets his first true test in the 38-year-old Pacquiao.
"Crawford is gonna fight this summer," Arum said. "If we can get the fight for the unification, that's fine, but he's gonna fight this summer. Don't ask me, 'Did they give him a date?' That's yesterday's news. I'm a fucking promoter, I'm gonna get a fight that people wanna see. I'm gonna put it on on a date that I wanna put it on."
Asked if the 29-year-old Crawford could force a "changing of the guard" by beating the legend at 147 pounds, Arum bristled again.
"No changing of the guard," said Arum, before taking a swipe at president Donald Trump. "It's either a fight that people wanna see and they'll pay for or it's a fight that they won't pay for. Changing of the guard is bullshit fake news."
The thing is, whoever Arum finds to fight Crawford before Pacquiao isn't likely to move the needle with fight fans. Junior welterweight (A.K.A. super lightweight) has failed to truly challenge Crawford, who previously held the WBO lightweight crown.
Former junior welterweight Adrien Broner is back at 147 pounds, and could make a good fight for Crawford, but Arum didn't seem interested in the idea and instead poked fun at the Cincinnati native for a recent incident in which Broner was pulled over in Kentucky while driving an SUV that was covered in bullet holes.
If Crawford's immediate future remains clouded, his desire to face better fighters is abundantly clear.
"It's not up to me," Crawford said about who he fights next. "But everybody wants to know: who's the next guy that Terence Crawford wanna fight? I'll fight anybody."
Pacquiao was not the only one of Arum's fighters to be called out by another on Saturday.
After absorbing a single punch in his knockout victory, Stevenson, a featherweight, did not hesitate to tell reporters on Saturday that his dream is to face WBO super featherweight champion Vasyl Lomachenko.
"I do wanna move fast and I want to win a world title by 21," Stevenson said. "Maybe 22. I want [Vasyl Lomachenko] too.
"I don't think Lomachenko is gonna get any bigger," he continued. "I think he's pushing it to jump out because he wants to fight the best people, and I respect it, but I don't think he's gonna get no bigger. I think we're gonna meet at 130."
And before Lomachenko, who some regard as the world's best boxer, Stevenson could see another of Arum's young prospects, 25-year-old Irish Olympian Michael Conlan.
Of course, Arum isn't in a rush to have his fighters beat one another and hurt their marketability going forward. Even mentioning Lomachenko and Crawford in the same breath, Arum took a second to "Thank God they're not in the same weight class."
Whatever he decides, Arum promised that Crawford and Lomachenko will be busy this year, and Stevenson will fight "every six weeks" or so.
"He's gonna fight somebody," Arum said of Crawford. "He's gonna take two weeks off and then go back in the ring. The idea that you get a talent like Crawford or Lomachenko and you have them fight once or twice a year is a crime."
