Things I've seen tumblr memeing about James Somerton doing à la "How did no one see how bigoted he was!" as if those things haven't been a significant part of tumblr culture for over a decade :

Presenting untrue and bordering on conspiratorial versions of (queer or otherwise marginalised) history without any sources

Completely disregarding and disrespecting any expertise on socio-cultural topics/humanities and distrusting academics and historians (incl. acting as if no academics or historians could be queer or marginalised)

Downplaying the role misogyny played in the historical oppression of queer women and concluding that queer men must have been more oppressed than queer women

Bi women are, at best, not as queer as "real" queer ppl, and at worst, simply equivalent to straight women

Despite nominal trans inclusivity, transmasculine ppl are functionally women when convenient (combined with the above, bi transmascs are functionally straight women)

Despite nominal trans inclusivity (bis), shamelessly attacking, threatening and actively endangering any trans woman who questions them or smth they find important (often by unfairly presenting her as violent or as a threat)

Having absolutely fucking wild and reductive takes about ace ppl, the oppression they face and their place in the queer community

Stating that marriage equality is an assimilationist fight while completely ignoring its direct roots in the horrifying consequences of the AIDS crisis for partners of ppl who died of AIDS

Praising western media creators from the past for queer coding even under censure and in the same breath condemning current non western media creators for being homophobic bc their representation isn't explicit enough

Blaming China for all existing homophobic censoring in western media

Assuming all queer media would be better told by western creators and by western standards

Only out queer ppl get to tell queer stories

Heavily criticising almost all queer media created by women or ppl they see as such (see above points about trans ppl) or involving/starring a significant amount of women for any perceived or real amount of "problematicness", but fawning over and praising and negating criticism of queer media created by and starring mostly or even functionally exclusively men (even when it could be argued that, you know, not involving/seriously sidelining women is a pretty clear example of misogyny which should probably be considered "problematic")

And I'm probably forgetting stuff or there's stuff I have internalised myself and don't recognise as an issue

Like idk but I feel like the takeaway from Hbomberguy and Toddintheshadow's videos should maybe be "be aware of such patterns in your communities bc they definitely exist" and not "this guy is uniquely awful" and I feel like a lot of the discussion I've seen surrounding this has been severely failing at that. Most ppl who've spent any significant amount of time on tumblr prob either have internalised at least one of those thought patterns, have had to de-internalise them, or have had to be extremely vigilant to not internalise them (which is done by, you know, seeking out other sources, which also seemed like an important takeaway from the videos)

#Also I'm saying this as someone who actually watched quite a few of Somerton's videos #And noticed those patterns and stopped watching bc I recognised them from here #and had already learned to unlearn them after being so exposed to them here #And tbh I think anyone who hasn't had the luck or made the conscious choice to seek out ppl who pushed against those narratives #Would absolutely have fallen for this man's bullshit. Like let's not kid ourselves we see takes like this every day on this hellsite #2014 me would have. I'm going to try to be as nice as I can. If you are having full on meltdowns and panic attacks because Chris Evans got married, please seek out for a psychiatrist. And if you consume so much media, if your life revolves around a celebrity to that extent, turn off the computer, lay off the fanfic, stop consuming media with them, stop consuming fanfiction. Just stop it.

Chris didn't sell you any fake image, the fans who were here before marvel, we knew about his frat guy personality, he openly talked about what part of a woman's body he found it attractive, he openly talked about how he's always thinking inappropriate jokes, y'all made a imaginary version of him, and then got upset when he didn't fit that image. People are not a piece of paper, they are multifaced, he can easily be a party frag guy and a family guy. It's not an impossible thing,

I'm not trying to be mean, I'm genuinely worried for some of y'all. I'm going to tag this with every male celebrity with a heavy female audience and fanatics that I can think of, because it's becoming ridiculous and scary.

I was here in the 2010s, when fandom was at one of its peaks, I saw girls leaking each other's address because of fandom wars, I had my number leaked, just because I made fun of One Direction at the time, I saw girls stepping over each other at events just to get a peak of their favorite singer or actor, y'all are acting just the same, but this time is way worse, because a lot of you are full grown ass adults. I saw people threatening to hurt themselves because of this marriage. I heard that Pedro Pascal was stalked a few weeks ago, people are having public meltdowns because of Timothée Chalamet, there's still people stalking Henry's girlfriend. There are still people dissecting every single move that Zawe does. Seek professional help. Stop consuming fanfiction, don't just decrease the quantity, stop consuming it for at least 3 months.

I don't know when y'all will understand they are actors, singers, models, they are here to sell a product so we can consume their product. We can enjoy a little harmless fun sometimes, we can imagine what it would be like to be next to them, or date them, be their friend, we can imagine that, but there's a point where you have to back up, rethink your life choices and see what's missing in your life. Please seek help, immediately

Then he faces Harry and it's a real challenge and he LOSES. How could he lose? he hasn't lost anything since he returned? What is happening?

Here comes Harry, who has known nothing but the curse of Liquid luck his whole life, and faces Voldemort with no fear.

Curse? What curse could it possibly have?

Harry has all of these things, money, fame fortune, power, and yet he is alone. He is always alone. No family, his friends never understand him, everyone leaves him.

maybe an unpopular opinion but i think sirius’ death actually makes sense in ootp. maybe not the way he died but the fact that he did. u can argue it was just more unnecessary trauma on top of an already traumatised child but like,,,

if u assume that the final book and it’s plot was decided, that harry had to sacrifice himself for the war to win, then it makes sense to cut off all his important relationships. he needs to feel atleast some level of disconnect with the world to offer himself up so freely and it’s hard to do that when u have someone as devoted as sirius. sacrifice has to be more appealing than life in that moment. also, if he’s alive, now u have all sorts of logistical nightmares about where to fit him in during all the key events. idk. i hate his death more than anyone else but i do think it played a role, as well as, on a more selfish note, prevented any (further) butchering of his character lol

For everyone getting their panties in a twist over the recent denial, I only have 4 simple things to say.

1. Every time he gets a chance, he says a huge load of bullshit. All he has to say is, “Despite what people think, Harry and I are not in a relationship and never have been.” It’s a simple straight denial. How hard is that? But no. It’s always him going on a tangent over a fucking “chicken Parmesan” which is not even related to the “ship” and him going on a tangent about “iPhone conspiracies” and “google”.

2. If a rumor doesn’t go away after 14 damn years, maybe it’s time antis and locals start thinking that it might not be a rumor.

3. If there is nothing to hide, they wouldn’t hide their “friendship” over stupid rumors cause they’re both 30 year old men who could ignore public. But still, despite numerous mentions of them both saying they’ve been in touch. We only ever see Louis interacting with Liam and Niall and Zayn ffs but not Harry. And we see Harry interacting with Niall. We see Liam interacting with Harry but we never ever see interactions between Harry and Louis. Why?

4. Lastly, if we are claiming an artist to be closeted, you can’t be so dumb to take an “off-the-topic-denial” to be a proof of them being straight.

But yeah, sure! Go on! Twist your damn panties until you tear them apart. You won’t notice one of us give a fuck cause you mistook us for someone naive and easily manipulated.

We had a month's training in Boise, Idaho, a month in Wendover, Utah, and a month in Sioux City, lowa.
