On the Journey!
Tumblr media
"Life is a Pilgrimage"!
Struggling towards Galilee!
"From his fullness, we have all received grace upon grace. ."John 1:16.
-------------------------------
W.H. Auden once said, "For the garden is the only place there is, but you will not find it. Until you have looked for it everywhere and found it nowhere that is not a desert."
Each year I spend a week or two in the Mojave Desert on retreat, where I had the dramatic epiphany of my life after my years on the streets of Los Angeles. I truly understood the words of John when he spoke the words: of Jesus: "From his fullness, we have received grace upon grace,"
The desert is the homeland of my heart, I don't find it barren, it is a perfect embodiment of infinite spaciousness. My spirit and my heart are cultivating a heart as spacious as the desert: wide open in every direction of the compass, Wide open to every creature that walks, flies, or crawls through it, wide open to every change in the weather: darkness and light, sun and rain, aridity and dew, heat, cold, and wind.
In the words of one of my favorite friends, Teresa of Avila the human soul is an "Interior Castle", and I learned this infinite and noble spaciousness from the desert, both the desert of Mojave and the desert of San Francisco. The prophet Isaiah  says it so well in describing the universal heart experience in finding God: "The desert and the dry land will be glad; the wilderness will rejoice and blossom."
My friend Pam, commented yesterday, "You have had a difficult life with the church and the treatment of many people." Difficult? No, through being a minister labeled as "intrinsically evil," to a prostitute, and from there ordination in a queer denomination and then ordination (because I am difficult)ha!  as a bishop, for "difficult priests", in otherwords for decentralizing priests, like me struggling to find a new identity.
In the desert of Mojave, and the desert of San Francisco, I have found the grace of Jesus, in all of its fullness, and through compassionate counseling, simply listening to others, without judgment, and telling them how to live their lives; approaching all like an interfaith chaplain recognizing everyone's beliefs or non-beliefs as valid. There are many paths to God!
My young, friend, fifteen-year-old, Saint Carlo Aciutis, tells us: Sadness is looking toward oneself, happiness is looking toward God!
And so my prayer for all of us today are the words of Cacchi Ricci:
"It takes a very strong individual
to sit with themselves,
calm their storms, and
heal all of their issues without trying
to bring someone else into that chaos.
Your journey into self-love is just that--
and you are doing it."
I am still in the process of "decentralization", but looking towards God, and finding happiness in the people I "hang out" and minister to on the streets and not bringing the chaos of my opinion of what they need to do in their lives! Deo Gratias! Thanks be to God!

Tune my spirit to the music of heaven,
and somehow, make my obedience count for You"

Thanksgiving as a Way of Life
By Jerry Newcome, D.Min. Another Thanksgiving is upon us.  But it’s amazing how ungrateful people can be these days.  One comedian quipped, “My grandfather tried to warn everyone that the Titanic was going to sink.  Besides not believing him, they also expelled him from the movie theater!” Ingratitude runs deep in the human race.  But as Christians we are called to be thankful–even thankful in…

A Fordham GRE Story
My name is John Gonzalez and I am a D.Min graduate from Fordham University in Latino Studies. I entered this field to develop and combine my professional interest in social ministry and Latino theology. I loved the education that I received and the opportunities that emerged as I finished my degree program. I fell on love with the commitments and values that came from a Jesuit education and spirituality of ministry. The quote below is fundamental value for me and my call to social ministry.
Tumblr media
I was struck with Jesuit spirituality that I eventually did the Spiritual Exercises in 2018 and became a Spiritual Director. Currently I live in Brooklyn and serve the diocese here as the Director of Parish and Community Relations for Catholic Charities Brooklyn and Queens. This has been a phenomenal experience and one that I want to share with the Fordham GRE community through this presentation I designed.
The experience I have had with Catholic Charities has allowed me to promote the mission of the Church as Pope Francis has been defining. A church that is like a field hospital after battle, a church that heals wounds and warms the hearts. I invite the current GRE community to consider a life serving the people of God through the efforts that Catholic Charities offer. It is a perfect place for budding social ministers who are being formed in the great Jesuit tradition that Fordham offers. If you are interested, contact me at [email protected].

Rev. Dr. Otis Moss Jr. (born February 26, 1935) is a pastor, theologian, speaker, author, and activist. He is known for his involvement in the Civil Rights Movement and his friendship with both Martin Luther King Jr. and Martin Luther King Sr. He is the father of Otis Moss III, the current pastor of Trinity United Church of Christ in Chicago.
At Morehouse, he was taught and mentored by Benjamin Mays. While at Morehouse he helped lead sit-ins and other activities to protest segregation. He completed further graduate coursework at the ITC. He earned a D.Min from United Theological Seminary, where he was taught by Samuel DeWitt Proctor.
He became the pastor of Mount Olive Baptist Church in LaGrange in 1954, pastoring the church. He served as the senior pastor at both Mount Olive and Providence Baptist Church in Atlanta. He moved to pastor Mount Zion Baptist Church in Lockland, Ohio. While at the church he was regional director of SCLC, leading several campaigns to fight various forms of discrimination and segregation. He participated in the Selma Civil Rights March with King. King married Moss and his wife. He spent one year away from the church to co-pastor Ebenezer Baptist Church in Atlanta with Martin Luther King Sr. After leaving Mount Zion Baptist Church, he left to pastor the Olivet Institutional Baptist Church in Cleveland, which was then the largest African American church in the state. He led the church for 33 years before retiring in 2008. During his time at the church, besides continuing to be a sought-after speaker and influential figure in social justice movements, he was an advisor to President Jimmy Carter and befriended such figures as Bill Clinton, Barack Obama, Oprah Winfrey, and Jesse Jackson. In 1997 he partnered with University Hospitals to create the Otis Moss Jr. Medical Center. He was repeatedly named one of America’s most influential African American preachers by Ebony Magazine. #africanhistory365 #africanexcellence #alphaphialpha

The Good Shepherd!

The Good Shepherd!
" I am the good shepherd." John 10
April 22, 2024
"Good Shepherd Sund"!
In my first parish out of seminary in rural Missouri, one of the members was short on workers that fall during the harvest, and I volunteered to help. He asked me to work with his sixteen-year-old son, Joe, in tending his large herd of sheep he used for eating weeks throughout the year.
Sheep are not easy, they run in opposite directions, and some might bite you as you push them back, in fact herding these sheep taught me why Jesus was the Good Shepherd, for us human beings are not much different.
As Joe and I made no judgment on our sheep, but we loved them, kindly pushed them forward, fed them, and truly cared for them, Jesus does the same with his sheep, with each one of us.
He meets us where we are, without judgment, and seeks to guide us into the right path of caring for others.
Seeing Jesus through the eyes of the Good Shepherd he asks us to look with the same eyes of mercy as he does, his call is for us in the words of Pope Francis to: "go down into the underground, and pass from the hyper-virtual, fleshless word to the suffering flesh of the poor."
Last night as I was listening and feeding people I saw one person after another, many of whom I have known for nearly thirty years, without clothes, and food, sleeping on the street with no bedding, suffering, truly suffering.
We can see the "suffering flesh" looking through the eyes of:
    migrant workers;
    undocumented migrant workers
housekeepers, and those in our society who
work for minimum wage and have little for
    food;
our mentally ill and disabled people drawing
$1000, to $1200 on social security, and our
    disabled drawing much less.
Jesus explains in Matthew 25 that the gaze of mercy is the one great criterion that separates the children of God from those who rush on by regardless. The choice of mercy is at the heart of the salvation drama, evident above all in the challenge of the migration movement, and lack of food and housing.
The practice of true spirituality, of love that Jesus proclaims, as well as Buhha, Mohammed, and others, begins with seeing as he does and getting our hands  "dirty" in service to the Risen Christ!
"I was hungry and you gave me food."
Deo Gratias! Thanks be to God!

Defying Niche Stereotypes: An Open Letter to the Gurus
Dear 'Niche' Gurus,
There's an old saying: 'You can't fit a square peg into a round hole.' I am that peg. The culmination of skills, experiences, and talents I bring to the table aren't just unique; they define a niche in and of themselves. Hypnotherapist? Check. Ordained preacher with a D.Min in counseling? Check. Fluent in sign language with professional painting and drawing capabilities? Check. Machinist with over three decades of experience, a published author, and a second-degree black belt in American Karate? Check, check, and check.
Now, tell me, where's the box you'd like to fit me into? Because while you're busy carving out the minutest of niches, I've been busy crafting a tapestry of experiences that can't be pigeonholed into one specific category. I'm living proof that life isn’t about narrowing down; it’s about expanding out. It's about embracing the vastness of what we can become when we allow ourselves to be both deep AND broad in our pursuits.
So, to all the niche enthusiasts out there, with all due respect: kindly reconsider your advice. Because while niches have their place, so do multi-faceted diamonds like me.

Mesha Stele and the Name "Yahweh"
By: Scott Reynolds, D.Min., Ph.D. | March 24, 2024 One of the most significant artifacts for Jews and Christians is the Mesha Stele or Moabite Stone, as it contains the first-known mention of Yahweh. The history of the artifact’s discovery is no less remarkable than its content. The inscription was first reported by an Alsatian missionary, who had seen it among the ruins of Dhiban, an ancient…
