'"A large, dark forest grouse of inland regions of the western U.S. and Canada. Until recently, this and the Sooty Grouse were considered to make up one species under the name Blue Grouse. Slow-moving and inconspicuous, but often surprisingly tame. Most likely to be noticed (at least by sound) in spring, when males 'sing' incessantly to attract mates, a series of deep hoots."

Sooty Grouse, Dendragapus fuliginosus, and Dusky Grouse, Dendragapus obscurus, were once both called Blue Grouse until DNA testing split them apart.

The differences?

Different places to call home. The Sooty Grouse lives closer to the West Coast. The Dusky Grouse is a more interior bird.

Different colored throat patches. Both males show bare patches on their throats during courtship. The Sooty Grouse has yellow, while the Dusky Grouse is more red.

Despite their differences, both of these grouse can be found at Mount Rainier National Park. They are both chicken-sized birds with gray-brown plumage that blends in like every great camouflage does. (Though the Sooty is a bit darker.) Both Sooty and Dusky Grouse males create deep, booming courtship calls that are very difficult to locate.

2016.05.14 - Attack of the grouse by Jeremy Yoder

Hiked up Hollyburn Peak last weekend. This male blue grouse followed us up the trail for several hundred meters, making dinosaur noises.
