Remember the Doom 3 Sentry Bot?
The cleaner bots in the new games and how VFR even made you use one to pick up a yellow key card?
And the Shooting and Explosive Sentry Bots in D2RPG?
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
I wonder if in a Doom game, the idea of a controllable/pilotable robot/gadget or Doomguy having a small robot buddy could be revisited but in a way that doesn't feel out of place.
Like if the UAC had an RC car:
The way how it works is that the player controls it, as if you’re playing as the small car.
You can drive it around, turn around, do sick ramps, flip it, but most importantly; You can shoot plasma projectiles from its upper turret and unleash some AoE electric field to knock off enemies.
Can also use it to reach tight spaces or be placed above floor switches.
You are probably thinking of the various military games that had this, but there's also games like Ape Escape that had the idea of an RC Car.
Maybe make it more unique by going with the Sentinel theme instead of UAC.
It might make more sense in a game like the "ideal Doom 4" idea i mentioned.
Because as a turret to fight alongside you, i also wrote this unique idea of a "spell" that turns any weapon into a turret.

Doom VFR is legitimately pretty good considering it's a pre-Boneworks attempt at a VR first-person shooter.

I'm not done gushing about Half-Life: Alyx for tonight.
Not to be all "Won't someone think of the multi-billion dollar company, no one ever gives any credit to the AAA studio," but why haven't the mechanics of HL:A just become standard practice for VR already? HL:A is criminally underrated compared to its previous entries and has continued to be a trendsetter for gaming. Yet nobody is continuing with what Valve set in motion. The closest thing I've been able to find in terms of a full VR campaign - not a standing still, VR experience - with similar interactivity to HL:A is Budget Cuts. HL:A just proves you don't need some overly complex VR gameplay system to make things both fun and comfortable. Fucking listen to these people.
Now I get it, VR is still in its infancy and hasn't really met a more reasonable price range for the average consumer (We don't talk about the Rift here, get that Facebook nonsense out of here) but I wish people took chances like this because people like me would eat that shit up! I need more VR campaigns like this. Not some port of a game that wasn't meant to be played in VR in the first place (looking at you DOOM VFR), not some tacked-on, broken-ass VR side mode (looking at you, Hitman 3) - a built from the ground-up, meant to be played in VR from the start campaign.

The finest virtual reality games available right now The Aftermath of Jurassic World VR MMORPGīetween the first and second movie in the rebooted trilogy, the freshly updated Aftermath lets you explore the rubble of the titalur dinosaur amusement park. It shows off an experience that makes the most of its structure without being too opaque for newbies, as well as continuing a well-loved franchise’s tale after years and years of quiet. Although having a less well-known brand and being a lot smaller project, Falcon Age provides a comparable experience for MMOPRG VR players looking for a narrative. Half-Life: Alyx is the newest hot property in MMORPG VR gaming, and it’s one of the most excellent VR games for immersing yourself in a narrative. Eve: Valkyrie lets you pilot a starfighter in an online match, while Keep Talking and Nobody Explodes pairs a player in VR with another player who can’t see the bomb they’re defusing but has all the instructions. Keep Talking, and Nobody Explodes pairs a player in VR with another player who can’t see the bomb they’re defusing but has all the instructions. There are also multiplayer virtual reality games to try. These are based on games developed for traditional controllers, but they’ve been altered so much in mechanics and settings that they’ve effectively become whole new experiences. Batman: Arkham VR and Superhot VR are two games that are a notch below. Beat Saber, Iron Man VR, and Star Trek: Bridge Crew are examples of this. Then there are the top virtual reality games that wouldn’t fit anyplace else. These are suitable for novices who are making their first explorations into VR gaming and franchise enthusiasts who want to experience their favorite game in a new light. These include games like The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim VR and Doom VFR, both based on older titles. Some of the finest virtual reality games are just old games reimagined for the new medium. While categorizing games by genre might be helpful, it’s preferable to rank the top VR games on our list according to how they employ virtual reality. I mean. If what I'm hearing about DOOM VFR being intentionally locked for Oculus Rift owners is true, then that's messed up.
Messed up, and extremely petty.

Perhaps the most underrated weapon in Doom to actually show up more than once.
In VFR it's more of a temporary/one time weapon and doesn't waste anything.

I'm gonna sound gatekeep-y here, and I kind of mean to, but... man, I'm not sure how to feel about this Half-Life: Alyx No VR mod.
On one hand, it's a feat to get this game working from start to finish as your traditional Half-Life game. VR is still VERY expensive to get into and if you're intent on playing this through the means it's developed for, you have to be either very financially irresponsible (me) or be a huge VR enthusiast to drop $1,000+ on a headset (assuming you're wanting to go with the Index to play this (WHICH YOU SHOULD)) and that's not something everyone can do. I applaud this mod for breaking down that barrier and letting people - who, at this point, have been waiting 3-4 years to play - finally experience this absolute masterpiece of a game and wonderful return to Half-Life as a series within their own gaming comforts.
BUT.
This game was never developed to be played as a non-VR game. Simply put, this is where the gatekeep-y-ness will start, it's being played wrong. A traditional Half-Life game will never replicate the same experiences intended for a VR game.
One of the most memorable moments to come out of Half-Life: Alyx for me was taking cover behind a brick wall during the backyard construction section a little bit into Chapter 6: "Arms Race." I was psychically lying on the ground to avoid taking damage from the Combine, frantically catching grenades mid-air to toss back and then scrambling from one section to another - still psychically - to somehow gain a better angle. It leaves you stressed and out of breath as you would in a real-world experience. AND THAT'S WHAT VALVE INTENDED. These were the core experiences scattered throughout the game to make it stand out. You could never replicate that situation with a mouse and keyboard, the physical stress and chaos of that moment.
The moment you're playing this in VR, you've entered an entirely different ruleset for gaming. I mean, just take a look at the Jeff chapter and think about removing the physical action aspects out of it. Covering your mouth to avoid spores, watching your pace and noise level, the elevator scene and the horror it brought when you - YOU - were RIGHT next to him - the VR experience of not watching a screen but BEING right next to him. It can't be experienced the same way. I don't know, I think a lot of this boils down to how worried I am with people playing this No VR mod and then disliking Alyx because it doesn't - and wouldn't - live up to that style of gameplay people are used to. Alyx isn't a traditional Half-Life game, and to steal a note from Tyler McVicker's video, it's not the run, think, shoot type gameplay of the past rather it's a much slower version more suited for VR and that's what you need. You can't just port a game to VR and then just clap your hands together and be like "OK, we're done!"- you have to think about it. DOOM VFR, Borderlands 2 VR, and Hitman 3 VR all did that and it didn't work.
I guess that's all I want to say because I don't know how to close these rants out usually. The end.
